Mayoiga – 08

From killing ghosts to stopping buses, apparently pitchforks are always the answer

Shocking truth! Masaki wasn’t a ghost after all! Though it’s too bad about her cousin not having a face.

And then they proceeded to ignore all of the signs that they were in a horror movie scenario

Once again, Masaki’s story didn’t quite add up. Surely some part of her Reiji story is true, but at the same time, none of her story explains how she knew secrets about the tunnel. Or why she seems to have changed her mind about the tunnel being an escape. Sure she says that she has a bad feeling about it to the group, but she told Mitsumune that it was how to leave when they were alone. How would she know that or why has that changed? Also, the rest of the group shot down her explanation of how she worked and used her real name in a nearby village all this time (using actual evidence too this time instead of flimsy accusations). Mitsumune was probably right in defending her from the other characters this time since the loudest ones seemed out for blood, but at the same time, once again the inconsistencies in her story weren’t addressed because everyone got distracted.

…Though having the characters kidnapped was a pretty understandable distraction. I’m having a hard time deciding whether to pity the bus driver or not, seeing how he tried to kill them in the first episode. Hayato obviously still has it out for Masaki, but there seems to be some degree of concern for Mitsumune if he’s willing to hang off of a moving bus to follow him. Though that concern seems to be about control over Mitsumune at this point. It would be interesting to see what kind of monster he can see, seeing how his character is now. Though it’s also interesting how Nanko pointed out that Masaki must have the kind of past where she isn’t able to see the monster or whatever and maybe that’s how she escaped. At least someone used logic instead of just throwing around “it’s because she’s a ghost!” again.

If Masaki’s story is true though, the village she arrived at was still pretty empty when she got there (yet miraculously well maintained). Not to mention that there may be more than one village. Everyone in the tour group now seems to have forgotten about asking about why they’re there in favour of smaller issues that have popped up, but this seems like another hint of the larger mystery of Nanakimura. Why would there need to be multiple villages? Who sent the email to Koharun? Why was it so well maintained despite being empty? Or if the rule is that multiple people seeing the same thing means it’s real, there’s still no explanation to the animal print or claw marks they saw earlier. Maybe Masaki and the monster might be something better to focus on right now, but the whole set up seems to be coming together more. Since everyone came looking for paradise in Nanakimura to run away from their old lives, it seems like there would be a pretty high chance that they would see something they were scared of in the monster. Did the rumour that utopia was in Nanakimura exist to draw people like them there? …Though of course, that doesn’t explain why the monster exists in the first place.

On the bright side (?) , Hyouketsu is alive. And he has a bow and arrows for some reason. So maybe Yottsun is miraculously alive too. Why or how Hyouketsu got the arrows is questionable, but the characters might have less to fear if they realize that you can spend an extended period of time in the forest without dying. …Or at least Mikage was fine after his encounter, and now Hyouketsu don’t seem physically harmed after being alone in the forest for so long. Maybe they could have found him sooner if the group hadn’t completely forgotten about him since he disappeared. They still haven’t remembered that Yottsun’s body may possibly be floating around in the river either, so Hyouketsu would have probably been SOL if he hadn’t run into Valkana and Koharun. …Who even knows what Jack is doing these days, but surely he’ll come to Mitsumune in his hour of need since he defended him episodes earlier.

Well, more things are happening. Hopefully Mayoiga starts addressing the bigger questions soon, since there are a lot of them. But for now, it was at least partially satisfying to finally get an explanation to Masaki’s story. As I said earlier, I don’t know if I buy her whole story, since she seems to know more than she explained to the group. But at the same time, some of the details are probably true to a certain extent. It was also interesting to see some characters react to the situation outside of the big group and talking about something else other than who to blame. Maimai’s bit with Nanko and Lion was nice at least.

Hayato is a yanhomo. Too bad he’s such a minor character.

Despite still having no idea which direction the story is going, things begin to get interesting. First Koharun with her anonymous letter and now Masaki with her reveal of setting foot in Nanaki Village before. Each one is suspicious in their own way but it’s hard to determine which more than the other is.

What an unwelcomed development. Of the known characters so far, Hyouketsu was one I didn’t care to see again after being such an asshole. Fortunately, something scared him good out of his wits.

More questions surface than answers that should be coming in equal measure. Aside from Masaki’s story and Hyouketsu somehow getting a bow and arrow, I can’t begin to imagine how the driver got the bus into the village. It was at the bottom of a sheer cliff drop.

Yeah Mayoiga’s biggest problem in a nutshell. Nothing makes sense becuz they never explain anything or tie up loose ends.

      • BlackBriar says:

With any amount of lucky, we should at least get some clarity before the show ends altogether. Surely there are some creatures there apart from manifestations of peoples’ mental hang-ups. It seems that way, though.

I just hope this isn’t going to be a “read the manga to understand more!” thing.

          • BlackBriar says:

Yeah, there’s a problem with that. Mayoiga is pure original material. No manga counterpart to consult.

            • Karakuri says:

There is a manga coming out though that’s supposed to follow the characters before the anime events started or something. It’s through some app though.

    • Karakuri says:

Maybe Hyouketsu will be more bearable after being ditched in the woods? As long as Jack doesn’t show up at least…

I can’t begin to imagine how the driver got the bus into the village

…At this point, I can only assume that he drove the bus there by pure determination.

  3. ProtoSovereign says:

Mayoiga’s cast is divided into to halves. Those that need to be in a mental institution and those that don’t… And a large number of them need to be… Meanwhile Hyouketsu no Jackness has awakened to his true calling as the Tomb Raider and Hayato realises you don’t have to be female too be a genuine yandere 😀

    • BlackBriar says:

Meanwhile Hyouketsu no Jackness has awakened to his true calling as the Tomb Raider

That’s a bad idea. Anyone visibly unstable shouldn’t wield weapons.

      • ProtoSovereign says:

Well as long as the Jackness Monster doesn’t kill Valhalla or Coke-a-rune I’m fine with his Tomb Raider Cosplay XD

    • Karakuri says:

Can we just throw all of them in the mental institution?

I kind of hope they go all the way with Hayato’s character like they have with Lovepon’s. The more ridiculous, the better.

      • ProtoSovereign says:

Yeah, we should have know Hayato had issues when he insisted on tagging along with Mitsumune to some sketchy village where everyone wants to start over afresh. That’s some crazy devotion there… almost like a stalker.

  4. Di Gi Kazune says:

What is the casualty count so far?

    • Karakuri says:

Maybe one? It’s not like they’ve bothered to look for his corpse so he could be alive.

      • BlackBriar says:

It’s as though they’ve completely forgotten about him, anyway. Not once has his name come up since.

        • ProtoSovereign says:

No one cared about Yottsuon lol.

          • BlackBriar says:

            That’s cold.

            • ProtoSovereign says:

You know what else must be freezing cold by now? Yottsuon’s body which everyone conveniently forgot about. :3 Poor Yottsuon too bad he’ll never have a chance to learn from his mistakes…

        • Karakuri says:

Silly BB. They’re obviously too busy yelling at each other and killing ghosts to deal with something like finding a body.

          • ProtoSovereign says:

Yeah, see they have their priorities in order.

            • BlackBriar says:

They’re neglecting one in not continuing the search for Yottsun. His corpse is polluting the river water as it floats downstream. A clear threat to the environment.

            • ProtoSovereign says:

HAHAHHA yeah, BlackBriar you have a point with the river water thing but don’t they have a well to get fresh water from? I can’t remember.

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

Only one supposed MIA? 🙁 This is sad.
