First Impressions – Dimension W

Spike is that you!?

winter15-foshYay my most anticipated anime of the winter season is here and this coming to us from Studio 3HZ who did Sora no Method a while back, but honestly I don’t think anyone really watched that one or did you? Either way I just hope the team behind this series can make it a success or at least make it entertaining, that and Funimation is helping them with this? I assume they are just giving them some money much like a kickstarter situation because Funimation is just a anime distributor not a full blown anime studio.

Energy crisis!

main (1)

Dr. Shido Yurizaki is basically an old Tony Stark.

Right off the bat Dimension W hits us with some hard facts with the info dump of the energy crisis of 2072 with a 400% tax increase in fuel prices?! DAMN that sounds quite rough, but thankfully Mr super cool science bro Dr. Shido Yurizaki he managed to discover an unlimited energy source that comes from the W dimension that exists beyond the X and Y dimensions and this new energy is called “coils” which are basically super batteries with unlimited energy and can power anything! I mean sure stealing from a whole other dimension sounds perfectly safe…surely nothing bad will happen by doing that right? Just as long as there are no freaking giant monsters or evil beings coming from that world to attack our world things will be great! Just kidding of course it’s a terrible idea and if the opening is any indication we might be seeing a whole bunch of crazy looking characters who I can only assume are from the W dimension and want their coil technology back.

Main characters are awesome!

main (3)

Kyouma fights like a certain priest named Kirei Kotomine~

While the main plot of Dimension W seemed to be about our main character Kyouma Mabuchi who appears to be some kind of bounty hunter type who often gets jobs to hunt down people using or stealing illegal coils? I guess those illegal ones are far more dangerous than the regular coils provided by the New Tesla energy corporation? Also Kyouma likes to be paid in both cash and fuel for any completed job because he isn’t really a fan of the new coil technology because I can only assume he had something bad happen to him or someone close to him thanks to the coils? We did see a small flashback and that probably won’t be the last time we see it…so yeah he prefers older tech from past like his gas powered car while everyone else has an electric car? He even uses strange ninja like weapons though out the episode and we gotta mention his unusual choice in clothing which makes him look like some kind of old school ninja.

main (2)

Mira wins my heart for cutest robot girl.

Besides the badass Kyouma we also get introduced to a robot girl named Mira Yurizaki who at first glance looks completely human, but she is revealed to be a robot and the “daughter” of Dr. Shido Yurizaki who went missing at the start of the episode? Yeah I don’t think she is really related to him; however he did say that his family was killed by the new Tesla Energy Corporation for his research on the new energy. So why does Mira call him her father? Part of me wondered if his daughter really died and maybe he managed to save his daughters brain and it’s now inside Mira’s body? I only say that because the crazy mechanic guy near the end who reactivated Mira said something about her having some organic material inside of her body? So it’s certainly possible and we don’t really know how far advanced 2072 is for medical procedures; however Dr. Shido kinda sorta died on us before we got to really know him so we might not ever learn about Mira’s real origin unless her role is to fill in the gaps or did he even die? For all we know he got sucked into that black hole whenever he destroyed that neon green coil and was sent to Dimension W.

Wow that was a really fun first episode! I totally forgot the original creator Iwahara Yuji also worked on Darker Than Black so my original comments on Dimension W feeling like Darker Than Black and he is also the character designer who gave us Hei, but damn if Kyouma doesn’t look and fight like Hei minus the cool electric powers of course; however why does he hate the coil technology? Is he like Will Smith’s character in I robot? Did someone he loved get killed because of the coil and now he hates anything that deals with it? Also what kind of robot is Mira? She can obviously shed tears just like a human so is she a super advanced cyborg? I hope we get some answers soon, but for now I will enjoy the ride as Kyouma and Mira team up to find those illegal coils. I almost forgot to mention! I love the opening for Dimension W which has Kyouma doing some strange dancing? I honesty don’t know why I love openings and endings that feature some kind of dancing and the song is catchy I’m starting to become a fan of stereo dive foundation.

First off, we have an official candidate for best OP of the season so far.

And this was one awesome episode, I’m loving all the characters so far, and the plot had me on the edge of my seat when the professor charged that coil. I’m really interested in where this is going to go and I’m glad I picked it up.

Kyouma was awesome and reminded me of a mix between the main character from I, Robot, and an older unmasked Boba Fett.
I liked Mira a lot too, to the point where I barely noticed the fanservice, which is always a good sign.

I wonder what the professor’s plan is, and how Mira plans on carrying out what he started?

I’ve actually never watched Darker than Black or Cowboy Bebop since I could never get into either. I almost didn’t go with this one either, but I took a chance and now it looks like it might be one of my favorites of the season.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah the OP is great and full of energy which is always a great thing! it’s what made stuff like Death Parade’s OP and Kekkai’s ED so much fun.

Yeah the characters so far are quite interesting indeed like Kyouma and his attitude towards coils and liking older stuff is an cool twist, but I just wanna know what happened to make him hate coils and yeah I thought of I, Robot right away and his comments towards Mira gives me the impression he doesn’t like robots either.

Mira on the other hand I just hope she does something! I know the ED showed off her fighting skills so maybe she will be able to fight long side of Kyouma? That and her strength is probably insane given the fact that shes a robot and knocked Kyouma out with just a slap? As far as fan service goes that is just something every series uses so we might as well get used to that.

I highly recommend Darker than Black if you like super powers and Bebop is just a great anime classic that I think you would also like 😀

I hope this series can be successful! So far it has me excited to see more.

      • IreneSharda says:

Kyouma does mention something about the “coils eating you whole” or something like that. Maybe something happened with someone he cared about (the faceless woman in his flashbacks and the OP perhaps?) that was because of the coils. Considering that they come from a different dimension, I’m wondering if there hasn’t been anyone pulled into that dimension by the power of the coils?

As for Mira, I think she’ll definitely be doing something, but she’s going to be pretty inexperienced to be a collector. However, we might see more of the professor’s plan through her.

In terms of fanservice, I’m okay with it (I enjoy femservice myself when done well 😀 ), as long as it doesn’t derail the story or the scene for the sake of itself, a la HO for example. The fact that it works seamlessly here, shows how you can have it in here and make it work well.

        • Foshizzel says:

Yeah when Dr. Yurizaki destroyed the neon green coil it looked like it created a black hole so I’d imagine that happened with one of Kyouma’s friends or family member back in the day? I could see that.

Right I don’t expect Mira to know what shes doing at first until she goes hunting with Kyouma for a while.

If their past series Sora no Method is any hint then Dimension W is probably going to be very tame in terms of fanservice which is fine I’m like you I rather not have the random fanservice from HO in this series.

    • BlackBriar says:

First off, we have an official candidate for best OP of the season so far.

Indeed. It’s the first catchy OP of the season and best of the year so far. Those of other series haven’t been impressive. Anyway, the OP title is “Genesis” by STEREO DIVE FOUNDATION. The same group behind Gangsta’s OP “Renegade”.

    • akagami says:

I’ve actually never watched Darker than Black or Cowboy Bebop since I could never get into either.

Blasphemy! Did you watch a bit and decided you didn’t like it or just skipped them based on the premise? Because those are two pretty good shows.

      • IreneSharda says:

With Darker than Black, I think I started the first few minutes and then it was right about the point where some guy was breaking his own fingers that I decided that it might just be a little too much for me.

Cowboy Bebob, I actually got through one whole episode of but I just wasn’t that interested enough to keep going. It was okay, but I didn’t see what everyone was so excited about. Also, there’s the problem that I’ve seen enough anime shows that I pretty much know the ending already and what happens to many of the characters.

        • akagami says:

That’s fair on DtB, With Cowboy Bebop, I think it’s more the characters and their interactions with each other that make the show fun to watch than the plot per se. I would liken it to Baccano! or Samurai Champloo.

          • IreneSharda says:

Well let’s see, I really like Baccano, but I got bored with Samurai Champloo about half way through. It was just getting too episodic and began to wonder “what’s the point?”

  2. BlackBriar says:

That… was… awesome!!! Purely awesome! One of my most anticipated and it pulled through. I had so much fun watching the run felt incredibly short. Which is always a good sign in my book. One of the proper examples of how you hook people in. This and Boku dake ga Inai Machi’s first episode are the most promising start-offs so far this season.

Always interesting that a futuristic world that seems to have all the answers still have “thorn in the side” problems like energy crisis and fuel prices. But damn! If fuel tax can be increased by 400%, some people must be in deep sh**! But it’s the nature of the world: As soon as something good comes, something equally negative also shows up.

Kyouma is a cool lead and the type I’d label “damaged goods”. Obviously he had a bad run-in to instill his hatred of coils and he’s a badass fighter. Yeah, his choice of weapons scream Kirei Kotomine but pay attention to the wires attached. There’s some Walter C. Dornez mixed in as well.

Mira’s likable in her own way, too. My fears were that she’d be annoying but that’s pretty much dealt with. Just a girl that wants to do good for those that mean something to her. After the mechanic’s analysis, it wouldn’t be a surprise if she indeed has the brain of Yurizaki’s late daughter.

Dimension W is under Funimation’s license and since it looks like a series that will generate popularity with ease, I’d say the odds of getting a dub are good. Off the bat, I can already imagine Christopher Sabat playing Kyouma. Using the deep toned voice he did for FMA’s Armstrong and DBZ’s King Vegeta (Yes, he played Vegeta and his father).

No trial necessary, I’m watching this show to the end. It’s way too relevant to my tastes and looks too fun to ignore.

Next episode’s titled “Loser” and if I remember the PV correctly, it’s the name of a character that will be played by Guren Ichinose Yuuichi Nakamura. I’ll be looking forward to that.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah it was p awesome in my book and I agree it was short and got to the point instead of giving us one whole episode all about Kyouma and then another episode next week that is all about Mira! So thankfully we got the “team” already set up in the first episode.

LOL yeah that 400% tax increase is insane! I almost feel that Dimension W is going to give us some kind of lesson at the end like conserve energy and fuel? either way it makes for a interesting future in the anime of course, but scary in real life…

Yeah Kyouma’s fighting style is a mixture of a lot of anime characters just like Hei from darker than black he uses some kind of wire weapon and uses his electric powers to shock people so I guess the creator who also made Dimension W is a fan of weapons with cords?

Mira is awwesomee I love her already! I just hope she does some badass fighting because like I said to Irene the ED clearly shows her fighting, but at the same time she isn’t exactly a professional fighter so I guess Kyouma has to teach her or she just has brute strength due to being a robot? Agreed I think she is Dr. Yurizaki’s daughter.

Yeah Funimation lately has been dubbing p much all their stuff, but usually it’s after the subbed version has hit like episode 6? I noticed that with some of their past stuff! Yeah Chris Sabat would make a great Kyouma and id bet Luci Christian would get picked for Mira since she voices a lot of main characters.

Right out of all the stuff I’ve seen this series besides Kyoani’s phantom I would say Dimension W looks great and it has plenty of fun factor as well.

Yep! It looks like a cool character and he looks just like a monster from the Persona 4 series…

    • Highway says:

Both you guys should learn more about economics and why you’d put a 400% tax on something. You don’t want people to use that thing. Perhaps in this case, it’s because of CO2 emissions (and what I’m saying is: get ready for similar increases in our world as far as use of carbon-based fuels)

At least in this first episode, the show isn’t saying anything about an energy crisis. In fact, there’s plenty of energy. The issue is paying New Tesla for it. And there are reasons that the criminals don’t want their uses tracked. That’s why they are going for the black market coils.

I don’t really expect much in the way of messaging down that kind of road from this show.

      • Sumairii says:

Damn, you beat me to it… What Highway said, then.

      • Foshizzel says:

Well I never claimed to be an economic major or even think it’s all that important for the real plot of Dimension W as far as I’m concerned it’s going to be all about Kyouma and Mira hunting down the illegal coils, but yeah I get it.

As far as a message I was just making a comment that it comes off as being presented as a hidden message lol…

      • BlackBriar says:

Economics isn’t my forte and off the bat, I never saw it as an important factor that will be focused in this series. Just something to be put out there. Most likely, it will be more character driven, centering on the two leads while elaborating more on Dimension W, New Tesla with its coil technology along with the consequences of drawing power from an external, possibly hostile source and whatever the late Dr. Yurizaki’s research was that his family was killed for it.

      • akagami says:

Except with today’s oil prices (and assuming they stay that way for a while) gasoline prices could drop to something really small. So like 400% tax on nothing is still nothing =P

        • Highway says:

It’s still 5 times more than it would cost without it. And raising the price of anything disincentivizes the use of that thing. Plus, when you have a known tax of 400%, there’s a very clear social signal: This is something that is frowned upon.

          • akagami says:

Wonder how that black market is doing. When you have government regulation trying to force an ideal, you get something like the prohibition. It doesn’t work.

          • akagami says:

I don’t think taxation as a disincentive works. Just look at smoking. High taxes haven’t stopped the new generation of smokers. And hike it too high and the black market explodes wide open.

          • akagami says:

Although I do have to admit unlimited energy through coils probably limits the appeal of gasoline. If the only alternative was solar energy on the other hand…

          • akagami says:

Don’t mind me, having a one person two side conversation here. Carry on~

    • Sumairii says:

Always interesting that a futuristic world that seems to have all the answers still have “thorn in the side” problems like energy crisis and fuel prices.

Use of fuel is frowned upon in their world because they have a cleaner and seemingly infinite alternative. So the high tax basically serves as a sin tax. I wouldn’t exactly call that a “problem” for their society since the only people it can be a problem for are the stubborn ones who refuse to move on. That said, our hero is one of these people. So I am sure the show will disclose something darker to the use of energy from “dimension W” to make us sympathize with his view…

      • Foshizzel says:

Yeah Kyouma hates the coils and were probably going to side with him by the end of the series. I did mention on the post taking the energy from another dimension is probably a terrible idea and hopefully we see some characters cross over from the W dimension and explain how were destroying their world by stealing their energy.

  3. skylion says:

from Studio 3HZ who did Sora no Method a while back, but honestly I don’t think anyone really watched that one or did you?

I think I might have watched some of that?

I like the main character, but the robot girl steals the show. It’s her story we want to follow.

    • IreneSharda says:

In terms of the real definition of a protagonist, yes Mira is actually the real one of the series. We’re following her story and plot for the most part. Kyouma is more so someone who is pulled in to her storyline, and we’ll be seeing his own unfold along the way.

      • Highway says:

Based on what I saw, I think it’s a little early to say that Mira’s ‘the real protagonist’. Based on what I saw so far, that’s like saying Leeloo is the real protagonist of The Fifth Element, not that Korben Dallas guy. Of course she’s not, she’s pretty much a McGuffin who does get some development. But that’s not enough to make her be “the real protagonist.”

        • IreneSharda says:

I know, but I’d say the difference between the two examples is that Leeloo is basically just, as you said a McGuffin that changes the course of Korben’s life. But everything is about his journey.

With this, it seems that we are following Mira’s journey to fullfill her father’s plan with her life happening to collide with Kyouma’s. But perhaps you are right. If we begin to see more a lean from Kyouma’s perspective and us seeing how Mira changes the direction of his life, then yes he would be the protag rather than Mira. It could also be possible that they are duel protagonists, but those are rarely done well.
          Time will tell.

    • Foshizzel says:

At this point IDK who the main is all I know is I just want to learn more about both of them.

  4. HannoX says:

I think Dr. Yurizaki is more Nicola Tesla than Tony Stark. After all, he came up with an energy source that powers the world (think AC current) and the company is named New Tesla Energy Corporation. But much more greedy than Nicola ever was.

Of course taking energy from Dimension W is going to be a very bad idea. It always is in SF, but that’s necessary for drama. As for the beings coming from Dimension W attacking, you can make a strong case that they’re defending themselves and we’re the attackers, however inadvertently. It’ll be interesting to see how the anime plays out in that regard.

Kyouma is a classic loner, anti-new technology hero type common in SF, which I don’t intend as a knock against him. But Mira is the one who has the potential to be something different. At any rate, it should be interesting to see the journey these two take.

    • BlackBriar says:

Of course taking energy from Dimension W is going to be a very bad idea. It always is in SF, but that’s necessary for drama.

In fictional shows that center on humans playing with what they’re not supposed to, it’s always implied “There are places Man was never meant to go”.

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

Nikola Tesla is a Servant with his own Noble Phantasm!

      System_Keraunos

      That makes the world right.

    • Foshizzel says:

Well I only said Tony Stark cause we can clearly see Dr. Yurizaki’s chest with a power source much like Tony’s after he got all that scrap metal in his chest same for Mira who also requires a power source in her chest.

      • skylion says:

…I would argue Tesla myself, but these days it makes more sense to say Tony Stark, as a lot of weird things involving getting power from another dimension via magic(?) is going down in recent issues of Iron Man and Doctor Strange. Awesome Goatee Bros!

  5. HannoX says:

Spammy took my comment to Dimension W!

  6. Overcooled says:

I completely missed the part where fuel prices went up 400% (I think I was eating at the time) so wow, glad I read this!

Anyways, Dimension W is a really fun show. I’m still getting warmed up to Kyouma who seems a little too stoic for me, but he can’t be all bad if he danced in the OP. The dude has moves, I’ll give him that.

    • Foshizzel says:

I know right? Kyouma’s dance moves are great! I can’t wait to learn more about him and who knows maybe Mira can break him out of his shell, but I have a feeling Kyouma is probably going to be a lot like Hei from Darker than black who never said much even though he was always there to help when needed.

  7. JPNIgor says:

Stereo Dive Foundation is back *-* These guys are awesome and the OP animation with the dance is awesome as well. I’ve been in love with them ever since Daisy.

    • akagami says:

I think Stereo Dive Foundation is a one-man show. Nothing on wiki, but last.fm says “STEREO DIVE FOUNDATION is the alias of Japanese musician, guitarist and music producer R・O・N (real name: Iida Ryuta 飯田龍太).”

Last I heard from him was Revenge (Gangsta~). But Daisy from Kyoukai no Kanata was great as well.

      • BlackBriar says:

Last I heard from him was Revenge (Gangsta~)

The title of Gangsta’s OP is “Renegade”.

        • akagami says:

I was close! I got the first two letters and the last right~! Do I get a cookie?

      • IreneSharda says:

Oh, so he’s like T.M. Revolution. He has what sounds like a band name as his own even though it’s pretty much just him.

  8. akagami says:

So what did I just watch? Some ossan who’s secretly a ninja and lives to drive his muscle car. And can dance up a storm as well. That combo just blew my mind.

I have to say that going in I wasn’t very interested at all… I was half expecting to drop this partway through. And yet at every turn, I couldn’t find a reason to drop it. For a first episode, it was done pretty well.

I do see some similarities with Darker than Black, with the Syndicate (Recovery Agency), and the relationship between Hei (Kyouma), the lone wolf, and Yin (Mirai), the catalyst for changing Hei.

Interesting comment about Nicola Tesla. I didn’t know about him (my history is a bit weak). I just assumed New Tesla was related to Tesla Motors.

    • Highway says:

      *sigh* Kids these days…

Nikola Tesla was probably not as awesome as I like to think he was, but he was pretty darn awesome. And kooky as hell.

      • skylion says:

…no historical figure is ever “as awesome”, or as kooky really…

      • akagami says:

In terms of inventors, I know of DaVinci… then skip a few centuries to Bell, who created the phone. Then maybe Steve Jobs (did he actually invent anything himself)?

My knowledge of inventors is pretty slim, I have to admit.
