MetaFap: Fall ’15 – 27 [NSFW]
Maids, tournaments and scooters.
Woooooooooooooooooo time for more MetaFAP! Sadly we got only two episodes left of Shinmai maou, but things have gotten really interesting and Valkyrie Drive continues to be entertaining.

I’ve got a double Sample of Shomin this time around, so how does it fare?

Shinmai Maou no Testament Burst – 07 – 08
I love this catgirl <3
So I guess tournaments are a big thing this season? Calvary, Asterisk and Shinmai maou? Personally I don’t mind tournament arcs in anime, but I know a lot of people who rather skip that stuff and focus on other things. Before the fighting starts what was going on in episode seven? It was like Basara was having a harem battle with Belphegor as in which guy could get with the most girls in one night! Clearly Belphegor is the winner of that contest even though Basara as the better harem. Now the tournament stuff started off slow with Mio fighting some shouta sheep boy and then we had Kurumi who got owned due to her opponent cheating and then Maria got beaten so fast! Also Zest got disqualified and Yuki totally killed someone…this is such a crazy tournament! I do have a few questions like what is going on with Basara? Is he finally turning into a demon or something? I know he went after Belphegor and he still has to fight Leohart in the tournament! They mentioned only demons with the demon lords bloodline can fight in the special zone so how was Basara going to fight him in the first place or was the stage changed at the last minute? I wonder how Basara is going to get healed up and still have time to participate in the tournament! I guess they could always teleport him somehow?
Fancy pantsu~
Yay group activities!

Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid – 07 – 08 [NSFW]
Meifon-“IDK BRO THIS SERIES IS CRAZY.”
Surprise Akira was a girl the whole time! Dun dun duuun! Just kidding I think everyone saw that plot coming a mile away and why did she pick a redhead wig for her disguise? Why didn’t she just pick out another color instead? It kinda defeats the purpose of having a double identity, but as usual most anime characters don’t see different hair color anyway so it doesn’t really matter I just thought it was kinda dumb and how the hell did she hide those massive boobs as the male Akira!? Damn anime magic that is how! So I wonder whose chest is bigger Akira, Kazami or Lady J? Then again nobody will ever beat Minami when it comes to chest size. Speaking of Lady J it was cool seeing her and Rayne team up with Mei fon, Mamori and Mirei as they went on a side mission and got attacked by a dumb robot thing? What the hell was that? It looked like a sad transformer rejected character and what the hell is Mirei? Is she an artificial arm or some genetic experiment? Seeing her “transform” was crazy and I was like why didn’t you do that before?! I guess she was afraid of anyone discovering that side of her? We did get to see Mamori’s new OP weapon form so yeah that was cool and it looks like Mirei’s old partner Momoka will be appearing next week.
The real Akira.
Boobs! They come in all sizes.
Lady J might be wining for biggest size…

Ore ga Ojousama Gakkou ni “Shomin Sample” Toshite Gets♥Sareta Ken – 08-09
Karen takes the lead?
I think we all know that automated fortunes are awesome when they’re “right” and complete rubbish when they’re “wrong”, don’t we? But despite the app-based powers of mobile phone prognostication (or maybe even because of it) Karen takes charge of her destiny, and of her sewing skills….Then it’s on to unfunny meidos and Hakua stepping up her cuteness game… |
Fortune Favors the Bold
Our first segment began with some rather high grade trolling as Kimito just cannot help but goad the gullible Aika stay on-board whatever goofy train of logic she just happens to have a ticket to. It can’t be helped, can it? But make no beans about it, she’s still energetic enough to play along.
In the manga, elements like this always made me grin; it’s hard to tell if she’s really this gullible, or if she’s really just playing along, happy to have her own special relationship with Kirito no matter what. I don’t think anyone can really be that gullible, but I do think people can be that smitten. But that segues right into all three girls having to have their little compatibility competition.
As with all dippy fortunetelling devices, bias is the deciding factor. So long as things are going your way, you believe the odds are in your favor – and if too much against you, then you must be suffering bad luck, right? Oddly, the 50% reading sounded much more “true” to me, as that just says, “it could go either way”; I mean you could have that without a consultation…
Because a fortune + doing something = result. Results can also happen if you don’t consult a fortune teller. But, I found it interesting that while the three grown girls bicker about that sort of thing, real world hunger wins out in the end, and Kimito spends time with Hakua, cooking her food for her.
But, fortune favors the brave, and Karen, by the next segment, spares only the slightest amount of reservation in getting what she wants. I like how the situation played out, as she assumed that her swordsmanship was her best, and indeed only, skill. But she is able to show she has others abilities as well; giving her some hidden depths.
In most things that attract our interest, we want value added, and the layers we discover in others fits that bill rather nicely. With Karen, her more reserved domestic side, is a stark contrast to her samurai style. I liked this one despite the unneeded and hamfisted “macho man” addition. Now all she has to work on is getting rid of her constant habit of sending mixed signals.
Let me tell tell you your fortune!
The Meido Strike Back
Well, this was tedious…
Goodness, but they spent quite a bit of time disabusing the female cast of their oddball, nearly nonexistent notions of what the “commoner maid” is and isn’t. Besides a few bits and pieces with this episode’s star, Hakua, I felt the comedy was as strained as it ever was. There were exchanges that went on too long, as in the entire piece about what medio cafe maids do; there isn’t a person this show could be intended for who doesn’t know the difference anyway, and besides, none of the jokes worked…
No…because NO!
And as usual, some gags went on for too long; for instance: Did they have to go into excruciating lengths with Reiko’s bad singing? That sort of thing hasn’t really been that funny since the height of vaudeville (and was it ever funny then?), so instinct should have told them to keep it as short as possible. Give her three syllables, cut to the stained glass shattering, then cut back to a devastated scene…leaving what happened between the cuts to the imagination. But at least Hakua was devastatingly cute. I smiled ear to ear when she wanted to win at janken.
You know what they say about guys with big hands…
So, just like the previous episode was part Karen’s, this one gave us some insight into Hakua and her situation. This one was pure charm offensive, and it worked to a tee. This is the sort of wheelhouse they should be shunting the water towards, as it feels they have a much better handle on the personal aspects most of the time; for the given value of handle that is. As it is Hakua is waaaaay to much on the babyish side of things to be considered for OTP in the long run. Yeah, it’s been stated she’s the same age, but not as presentation goes. Still, the cutesy friendship vibe between them is sweet and pretty honest.
I really like the maid on the right…she’s just so happy.
But the gags were a bit off, as usual. The maids were already shown to be prepared in their mental state to set Kimito up for the “indirect kiss” of sharing plate and tableware and straw with Hakua. Why not show them happily breaking/tossing around the plates as he’s walking in (which would underscore what maids don’t do thus giving us subtext in contrast), tell him to never mind that and sit down to eat, then pop the fact that they’ve run out of plates when he asks for one. Cue a flurry of cleaning. Spoons? While he’s getting used to the plate weirdness, show the maids bending them in the background, happy as clams to be contributing to the plan. When he gets around asking for a spoon of his own….repeat that they’re out, cut to Kimito finally getting some sort of message.
I mean, write it so this pays off…
Straw? The main maid gives him an evil look while standing in front of an obvious display of straws and says, “You better not screw this up for any of us” so only he can hear. Cue to Kimito getting the picture and playing along. While all that is going on, the rest are lining up/pushing each other for the best seats in the house for the Hakua x Kimiot fuwa fuwa moments. Short, solid, tells the story, sets up the gags and the punchlines without being badly repetitive for one, and two leaning on the obvious “oh I fell! clumsy me” non-funny.
Butt I Digress…
Pure Science and Pure LOLi BUTt win against everything!
Well, we are in the final stretch for most of this season’s shows, these are probably not the typical “breather” episodes; as they function more like “rounding out the harem” shows than anything else. I like that it spent more time with Karen and Hakua’s end of the relationship, and that it gave their characters a whole lot more to go on, such as it is. Both of them felt a bit more natural; even though a lot of it was pretty forced here and there. We’ll see what they can bring to the game in upcoming episode, as “next time” It looks like all sorts of heck is gonna break loose. I think they’ll focus a bit more on Kujou and her character and the reasons why she choose Kimito to be the Sample in the first place. It must be love….

Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid: Whoa, good thing I opened the spoiler or I would’ve been misled. I was under the impression only the 7th episode was being covered and not the 8th as well going by the header of Valkyrie’s article section.
Always count on this show to bring the kinky, erotic kissing scenes. An award should be presented in that department.
Well, no surprise Akira turned out to actually be a girl. Unlikely given the entirety of the island’s population and her face just kept giving it away. Painfully obvious. Now, to wait for Mamori’s distraught expression when she learns the truth.
The 8th episode really got the plot going. And no, not that kind of plot, of course. There’s an abundance of that at all times so no need to worry. Common knowledge that Mirei was special but I didn’t see a development like her being a modified human coming. It seems no series is safe from the prospect of human experimentation. Lol at her shielding Mamori from Lady and Lady’s erotic kiss session. And she’s the younger one of the two.
Another plus is that blue haired girl frequently shown in the ED finally making her appearence. No brainer she’s Mirei’s old partner so I’m anticipating on how their reunion will go. Bets on it being a bitter one.

…”Now, to wait for Mamori’s distraught expression when she learns the truth.”
Time for Mamori to realize she’s a lesbian. She got turned on and transformed just by seeing two naked women, one of whom was Akira, without any other stimulation. Plus, she’s totally infatuated with Akira the Governor. Her conscious mind thinks Akira is male, but her subconscious knows better.

Yep I got lazy over thanksgiving weekend so I decided to do a double post on Valkyrie, but so far it continues to be entertaining and fun every week! Just as long as Meifong is around LOL
Akira wasn’t fooling any of us! “he” even has an ARM which we know only girls can have sooooooooo yeah! Nice try and poor Mamori she is going to be destroyed later when she finds out, but yeah she needs to realize she likes girls.
At least the story is progressing somewhat~

I am beginning to think Pantsu Sample is a perfectly fine alternative title for Shomin Sample…

Shinmai Maou no Testament Burst – 07 – 08: Tsk. Ignore the haters/hipsters, Fosh. Tournaments can be fun in their own right and given the way the challenge announcement to decide the future of the demon world a few episodes back went, this was the likeliest outcome. A similar fashion in what happened in Yu Yu Hakusho with the Dark Tournament with Toguro as the main antagonist. Bummer we’re down to two remaining episodes.
Surprisingly, Mio held her own with ease and her match ended quicker than expected. I guess those Master/Servant sessions with Basara are indeed proving their worth. A shame Maria and Kurumi weren’t so lucky.
If Basara and Lars are scheming, you know someone will get royally screwed. Zolgia got his just desserts last season and boy, was that satisfying. What’s there to guess now are the conditions of their deal.
A rare occurrence but some respect to the current antagonist, Leohart. Unlike the disgusting Demon Council, he doesn’t engage in trickery to gain wins. The manner of Kurumi’s defeat rubbed me the wrong way. Not to mention Zest getting axed before she could get her match. The idea of Leohart becoming Basara’s ally later on is one I’d like to entertain. He doesn’t strike me as evil at all, let alone someone who’s evil for the sake of it.
POWUH: Meta Team and PreCure Mastah with 9203 comments
I know right? Tournaments are great! I guess as long as they have a purpose as to WHY the characters are doing it in the first place and from my experience they are somewhat important. I was totally thinking Yu Yu Hakusho, DBZ, Hunter x Hunter 2011 and there are a few others as well that have a tournament arc.
Yeah Mio has power she just doesn’t use it often which is fine. but she is a bit overpowered; however id rather her be OP than weak as hell.
I get the same vibe from Leohart he doesn’t come off as being evil for the sake of being evil and I could totally see a team up with him and Basara later.

Tournaments in fiction are a complete snooze fest to me. The only real reason to do them is have characters cheat at winning them, which is something you can’t do in real life without consequences. In fiction the author manipulates the outcome they want, so might as well go whole hog and do something you can’t get away with in real life. I recall an essay by comics-writer Kurt Busiek where he got it in the neck for writing an “official” story that Captain America won in a fight against Batman. People bitched to no end stating that there is no way it could be “true”. He replied that fiction is a big lie and he decided that CA won cause that’s what he felt made a more compelling story. If they feel sore about it, they could get into the field and make Batman win in a story…
But yeah, tourneys in fiction are about as appealing as locked-room mysteries are, they just scream loudly at you, “The writer is manipulating shit!” Which is something you don’t want called to your attention when you’re trying to suspend disbelief….

This is pretty much my feeling as well. Tournaments are usually not compelling fiction because the outcome is a foregone conclusion. The real-life purpose of a tournament is to find out who is best out of a group. That’s what they’re good at. But in a story, unless there’s a history of the story being willing to play the characters fairly, which they almost never do, then the suspense goes away. The ‘good guys’ are gonna win, or they’re going to lose in an uplifting way, or they’re going to be utterly humiliated so that they can learn a lesson. It takes something very special to be able to make a tournament a compelling story, and it’s pretty obvious that Asterisk and ShinMaou are just not gonna get there.
There is one more reason to do a tournament that occurs to me: pure fanservice, which is what they’re doing with Magical Lyrical Nanoha Vivid.
POWUH: and LOLi Defender with 10998 comments
The Negima manga ( I don’t think they ever tackled it in either version of the anime ) did a HUGE tournament arc as one of it’s very early arcs, but it only served as a big multi-character reintroduction, and the story played around a great deal with the ideas of balance; who outclassed who and why etc. It was a big meta commentary on character narratives as well as formalizing all the types of magic the story would go on to use and exploit, and the brackets were just a framework…plus it was fanservice, cause that’s what the mangaka likes, and would you expect less of the guy that did Love Hina?
POWUH: Meta Team and PreCure Mastah with 9203 comments
Hey now if you’re gonna complain about tournament arcs Calvary is in that list too.
@Hwy and Sky: Yeah you guys hate tournaments but I recall you both loved that bit in Nanoha Vivid…

+ 100 points! And don’t forget Asterisk.
POWUH: and LOLi Defender with 10998 comments
…actually, Highway liked that bit, if I recall, I dropped it as I didn’t like the tourny or the fanservice elements…
POWUH: Meta Team and Spammy Tamer with 7115 comments
Actually, the tournament was the worst part of Nanoha Vivid. It essentially wasted the last 4 episodes as far as I was concerned. I’m sure for fans of the franchise, it was a lot more meaningful, but it added nothing to the overall story, which just stopped dead right when they started the tournament.
POWUH: Meta Team and Spammy Tamer with 7115 comments
And a lot of my point is exactly what you see in Cavalry. How much of the tournament have they shown? Two fights by Ikki (one of which featured another main character). One by Shizuku. And that’s after 7 episodes where the tournament is going on. Cavalry is a show where they are *having* a tournament, but not *showing* a tournament. The fights are all in there for character development, not for fanservice. And the main focus of the show is what the characters are doing outside of the tournament.
We’ll see how Asterisk does with the Phoenix Festa. I’m hoping they make it be about the political intrigue, but so far it’s not, and that’s disappointing.
