Two angry girls and one cute LOLi this week!
Time for more Shinmai Maou no Testament and Valkyrie Drive drive! I also learned Shin Maou no Testament is only going to be ten episodes long? I guess they plan on doing more uncensored OVA episodes? Either way we might as well have fun with it.

So what happened to Basara’s missing arm? I guess it magically came back? Also apparently he has a super secret berserker mode that kicks in whenever he gets knocked out? I mean sure why not? Every action anime has to have some kind of op random power to keep the main character from dying. I could use a bunch of examples, but the list is quite large! Besides Basara the episode seemed to focus on more on Chisato who killed Ornis because he just wanted to kill Basra so badly! Also Chisato is a…wait for it…an…angel!? Dun dun duunn! Who didn’t see that coming? Then again anyone who has seen enough demon themed anime knows if there are demons running around surely there are angels as well? It wasn’t all that shocking to me; however she had to give up some of her powers to remain on earth to protect Basara from danger. Oh and what about Nanao? Yep he was totally a vampire the whole time, but why is a vampire working side by side with an angel like Chisato? I guess we will learn more about that later and the last thing to mention Mio has to return to the demon world? I guess she has some family business to attend to and of course Basara and everyone else has to go with her! So maybe the rest of the season takes place in the demon world which is fine by me, I wanted a change of scenery. I did want to mention how amazing the OST was near the end of the episode! kinda forgot that Takanashi Yasuharu does the music for Shinmai Maou and his OST work is always great from Precure, Fairy tail, Log Horizon, Naruto and yes even Gonna be the Twin-Tails.

After making their insane escape last week Mirei and Mamori are wanted girls! Thankfully the super secret cowgirl Meifon is there to give them a place to hide, but seriously they are on an island where the hell are they even going to hide? Not to mention the fact that nobody can leave the damn island! Anyway Mirei and Mamori take shelter with a bunch of other girls like Torino Kazami who I guess is the mom themed character even though she wants to be called big sis? She could give Rinko Iori a run for her money from Gundam Build Fighters. Oh and to make matters worse Meifon apparently has been stealing stuff from the school which lands her to the wanted list? Then again they didn’t really know it was her and I think Kasumi was helping Meifon with all the missing goods as well? Speaking of that girl DAMN she is strong! Also she doesn’t even have an arm aka sexy weapon girl? At least she isn’t battle hungry like Charlotte who has a harem of girls? I swear the team behind this watched all of Cross Ange a few times before starting Valkyrie Drive. Other than that we didn’t learn much since things were cut short with Rayne Hasumi aka Lady popping up to save Mirei and Mamori! She also reminds me of another Gundam Build Fighters character named Lady as well and one last detail! Akira is the only guy on the island? That is probably not true at all…overall this was somewhat nice episode because it also gave the two main girls a chance to talk so that was nice.

Well, as far as this show is concerned, it’s about time I follow a piece of my own advice, and just let the anime be the anime and not worry about exact adaptation. After three episodes now, it’s clear that little of the humor is going to translate well from medium to medium, at least with this attempt, and scrutinizing it week after week will get tedious and boring. So with that in mind, lets’ move on and tackle the show as it is. |
Welcome to Eden
It looks like Kimito is having a rough time transitioning from his ordinary lifestyle back home to being the center of attention in a very unusual situation. Every facet is observed down to his eating habits, when he goes to the bathroom, and even when he, like every other school student ever, nods off in class. This is underscored by the fact that the life he left behind, unwillingly you have to add, has also been transformed; so much to the point that it could have it’s own LN title, “We Traded Our Son to An Exclusive All Girls Academy For Home Renovation Complete with Onsen-style Bathing Area”. To add the cherry atop the terrible cake, Kujou is still being…well….Kujou. She has a wonderful gag to wake her “master” every morning. This sounds like a situation that could be fixed by some distractions!
Science-LOLi FTW!
With Hakua we get a LOLi of very special needs. She is so focused on her own world of theoretical super-science that she can’t come to terms with the simple acts of dressing or undressing, and like all geniuses has a very specific set of idiosyncratic habits such as a set menu. So of course, our hapless protagonist not only comes across her at random, but is also the one to break through her isolation. Hakua goes from science drone to…well, not so much a science drone. All for the low low price of Aika misunderstanding the situation. But at least she is going to make an ad-hoc mobile network for the school. Fun with texting!
Swords and Thighs
With Karen we get the very high strung mixed with a super-sword-skill and the potential for misunderstanding and embarrassment. No really, this girl is a walking disaster (oh those thighs!) area, no clothing is safe from her onslaught, and that is what come along to hoist her by her own petard. Like many of the girls of the school, she has that notion in her head that all commoners must be special in some right, so just assumes that her own self defeat is something created by Kimito; so much to the point that like all warriors born to the sword swears loyalty to the boy whether he wants it or not, and whether or not he is aware that she’ll undermind him whenever she gets the chance. Fortunately for Kimito she’s instantly smitten by Hakua, so he has a distraction for her.

So, how well is the show doing on it’s own? Well, not to good honestly. They aren’t making many efforts to transition from different scenes to the next; leaving me to feel that this is just a bunch of random occurrences rather than good set ups from comedy. The animation is still under-par for much of Silver Link’s previous and current work, with character design especially feeling kinda poochy. But this episode has a lot more charm than the first two. It’s like they get the characters of Hakua and Karen than the other two. So, I’m still waiting for them to stitch this up right and proper.

Shomin Sample just takes too long with everything. Maybe jokes with Hakua and Karen are funny… if they’d get to them. Instead it’s just tedious. Even the scene with the maids talking about Hakua doing things with Kimito were 2x as long as they should have been, and ended up just as boring and vapid as any office lady conversations about what their kids ate.
Even taking the anime for itself, its… still just not that good of a show.

I get the feeling that production died along the way, and we are seeing it’s ghost. I do elevate some character moments over the general blandness the show is projecting, but that is just the charm points I’m susceptible to.

I got a few minutes into Ep. 4 and decided to quit. It’s just too much boring talk and long drawn out jokes when they do finally get to a joke. And I don’t find the jokes that funny anyway; certainly not worth the time it takes to get to them.

Valkyrie drive is doing ok. I’m hoping that Mirei opens up more soon, maybe just a little bit, because I think she’s too silent for the character in that position. Plus that leaves too much of the talking to Protect Her Virginity, who at this point should just respond to “shoujo” instead of correcting everyone every single time. It’s just not cute or amusing when she does it (unlike Midori correcting “Sapphire” in Hibike Euphonium).
Overall, the show feels like a low-rent kind of Cross Ange. But for Studio Arms, that’s not too bad.

I want Mirei to talk more so Mamori doesn’t have to talk so much. I really hate her voice. I know there are those who find a squeaky little girl voice cute, but I find it grating.
Yeah, the virgin/name joke has long worn out its welcome. Like by the third time and it wasn’t that funny the first time.
I agree it’s a low-rent Cross Ange. And it seems like the creators thought one thing CA needed more of was boobs.

Shinmai Maou no Testament Burst – 03: It’s a bother this season only has a total of 10 episodes. The series has grown on me.
I wouldn’t. For all we know, it would be spiked with a powerful aphrodisiac and then, you right in the palm of her hand afterwards. Out of all the succubi I’ve seen in mainstream anime, Maria’s by far the most perverse.
Well, two things I didn’t see coming: Tachibana being a vampire and Chisato as an angel. Strange though. As Shinmai Maou is known for having a multitude of demons, so in my mind, if Chisato had to be a non-human, I’d have just pegged her as another low profile demon. So many around that an angel presence possibility was never entertained.
Chisato sure owned Ornis easily and it’s only a portion of her power due to a temporary conditional release. Meaning she’s got to be an OP monster if fully unrestrained.
So Basara had a trick up his sleeve even he didn’t know about. This shouldn’t be a shock when it comes to leads of his type. When you think you’ve seen all there is to show, someone extra always comes along. Like you said, Fosh, the list is long but at the moment, this has thinking of Yu Yu Hakusho’s Yusuke finding out he has a demon heritage.

Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid – 03 [NSFW]: The guilty pleasure keeps on rolling and I dare say with the opening scene in particular, this has to be the most ecchi filled episode yet.
I don’t know what the creators are trying to pull but they’re not fooling me into believing the governor is actually male. Too much of the appearance is indicating otherwise. I could be wrong but those odds are low at the moment.
I don’t mind Mirei’s silent disposition. Given her battle hardened aura, it suits her well. She talks when it’s felt necessary as opposed to being overly talkative with nothing sensible to say. That would be annoying.
Apparently, Kasumi is very aware of Mei Fon’s pillaging by decided to turn a blind eye since she’s said the amount of stuff taken was insignificant of her concern. Whoa, can she kick ass! I’ll bet she wasn’t even going all-out.
Yeah, Charlotte will be a thorn in the side. She needs to be put in her place. What the hell was going on with her in that tank? Here I thought Cross Ange’s Hilda had a glorified girl harem. I use the term “harem” loosely since it looks more like an orgy.

Burst: This is starting to feel like the trying harder version of DxD. I just keep wishing it would put it’s own unique stamp on it’s trope. But this last episode we got something barely above basic, generic demons. Yeah, Maria is a high point…It’s early days for the story, I know. But the finale of the last one was kinda like an eroge finale.
Mermaid:This one is fairly good so far. But I facepalm’d hard over the central plotpoint. I mean, it was neat that Kasumi is playing both ends against themselves, but discovering that Meifon was stealing from them felt really lazy. “Oh, now we should do something!”.
Ah well, at least Meifon is kinda cool. I wonder if she’s a “casual”, weapon, or driver?

You know, maybe that’s one of the reasons that I’m just not into this series of Shinmai Maou. It just doesn’t feel like much of a story. It’s like it’s just trying to outdo the set pieces of DxD. So each episode feels like it’s two set pieces: Something actiony at school and then something sexy at home. But they don’t connect. Ever. They can keep saying “We need to do these things to make the pact with Basara and Mio and Yuuki stronger, but that’s not ever something that they show consequences of. At this point it’s just an excuse to take off clothes and fade to black as they do… something… that they don’t tell us. There’s no relationship development there because of it. There’s just compulsion.
The show is just too compartmentalized. Again comparing it to DxD, one of the things DxD does really well is bring Issei’s ecchi-sketchy nature into the rest of the things they do. Boom, there are your consequences. There’s your meaning. There’s no meaning to the sex encounters in Shinmai Maou.

The funny thing about Shomin Sample is that people love it. I wish I could forget entirely about the manga and just watch the anime without expectations.
Yeah, this episode felt a lot better than the others, but it was probably because of the character. I had forgotten that Hakua was about 14 years old, so when I first heard her, her voice sounded off, but thinking back, it probably fits her very well.
About Karen, I’m not a fan of her character. She’s just kinda… there, to create chaos from time to time and to drool over Hakua. I seriously think the show could be better without her.
The other stuff I always complain about, I won’t even bother. It’s getting annoying already. I’ll just… watch it.

I MEAN IT. In the website where I watch stuff, people are always so worked up over this, it’s almost frustrating to see the comments overlooking every flaw this has just because random muscles in the opening, plump thighs and the loli.
