First Impressions – Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid [NSFW]

u told me there was a about girls transforming into weapons a few years ago I might have laughed at you, but thankfully I remembered there was Soul Eater, Soul Eater (not) oh and I almost forgot Noragami; however Valkyrie Drive adds in the bonus of yuri elements and yes it’s uncensored if you go outside of Funimation streaming services.

When it comes to full blown Yuri anime I’m usually not that into it because I prefer my yuri more on the comical side as seen in Yuru Yuri where the girls have fantasies about it and never act on them unless you’re Chinatasu then sure go for it, but Valkyrie Drive takes the yuri theme and uses it as the “plot” regarding the partner system where the weapon girl has to be sexually aroused in order to transform as we saw with Kouzuki and Miyasato on the beach; however with the main girls Mamori and Mirei it will be something they will have to work on which is fine by me! I found Mamori to be almost as cute as Yamada from OreMonogatari, but at the same time I fear her voice will get somewhat annoying to us watching weekly especially since she has to talk a lot! Unlike Mirei who looks and comes off as being another Ange from Cross Ange even though Mirei is super freaking quiet. I get the feeling they are going for total opposites attract thing since both girls are very different in their looks and personality, I know that shyness between them will go away once they get used to the whole idea around the knight and living weapon pairings.

So what is the point of all the fighting anyway? Honestly I don’t really recall them saying if they gain anything through? I assume that there is some sort of knight ranking system and eventually Mamori and Mirei will fight the highest ranks at the school after fighting various ranks along the way? So maybe we will have some tournament stuff in the future? Personally I don’t want a Cross Ange setup with the girls constantly harassing Mamori and Mirei every week, but given how the entire school laughed at Mamori at the end that will probably be the thing and its purpose? I bet to bring the two main girls together cause they are a pair. I do know normal people view people that turn into weapons as having a illness? Which I we will learn more about through Mamori’s flashbacks with her family even though I bet there are similar girls at the school who hate being a weapon like we saw in Soul Eater (Not) and Norigami.

Final Thoughts
Well that was certainly something CRAZY! I will also say that yeah Valkyrie Drive is nothing like soul eater! Sure it has the idea of people transforming into weapons which is always a cool theme to play around with, but I think Valkyrie Drive shares more in common with Norigami since the masters in that anime have to form a special bond with their weapon partners in order to fight. Now will it get that deep? Hell no! Speaking of weapons I loved the transformations I’m glad it’s not going to be limited to sword based weapons instead here are guns and other strange weapons thrown into the mix. I also wonder if the weapons reflect the girls inner desires ? Like that masochist girl’s weapon being a spiked ball and chain? Probably not…again I keep assuming a lot about this anime….anyway what did you like about the first episode of Valkyrie Drive was it entertaining or have you seen better all female cast ecchi anime like Senran Kagura? Queens Blade? Freezing? Blade and Soul and so on? I was confused on why they added mermaid to the title, but I guess that has to do with the girls living on an island and the fact that Mamori Tokonome washed up on shore.

Well, the set-up is so-so. But the enthusiasm is good!
If anyone would try to defend this as “not soft core porn at all” they would be a fool, right?
But like you say, the weapon design is interesting, at least from the three we’ve seen so far. I rather like the ball and chain fitting the aspect of the girl’s inner desire. Seems perfect for a masochist to want to lash out like that.
But we got Calvary and Asterisk already. So that rather sews up the combat tournament shows this season. Both of them are showing a bit on the front bench, with some promise in the back bench. But I don’t think Mermaid is going for that. This is pure weapons and titilation…goodness…

Funny thing, I saw figures being announced for this show before it even aired, which was surprising, because normally I would have expected it to develop a good following first. And since the figures weren’t that outrageous, I figured this would be a typical boing anime with pow.
And… yeah, I didn’t know what I was getting into. A good thing I didn’t look at this where there was anyone nearby, because that would have been awkward.
I’m surprised there isn’t any censoring. It seems recently Fog-san and Beam-san have made themselves comfortable at AT-X.
I was expecting something like Senran Kagura and this turned out to be something more along the lines of Queen’s Blade, but yuri.

Normally, I’d call most ecchi shows borderline hentai but this… this series actually breached the boundary. So essentially, Valkyrie Drive is a fiercely erotic version of Soul Eater. Interesting.
I only knew the title of the show but not a single thing on what it’s about so all this unrestrained debauchery caught me off guard. Just as surprising that the lead Mirei is voiced by
IndexYuka Iguchi. I was going to say I’d have never pegged her to play a character in this kind of show until I remembered she recently played To-Love Ru’s Mea Kurosaki.And here I thought Shinmai Maou no Testament BURST would be the only ecchi series this season. Well, now there are two guilty pleasures to look forward to. And for the hell of it, Shinmai’s Maria should be in both of them! 😛

Yeah Valkyrie is indeed a erotic take on Soul Eater! I guess we can see why there aren’t any male knights or weapons in this universe.
I was surprised too on Mirei being the silent strong character, but if you go through her backlog she has played these kinds of silent roles before and yeah she is the perfect fit since she has played a semi sexual character like Mea! Much like Momo’s actress.

I’d say both. Aside from the “person to weapon” transformation that screams Soul Eater, the show’s present population is completely female. If you don’t count Mirei’s tanned skin, her other features and attitude bear a resemblance to Ange: Supremely confident to the point of arrogance, tall, blonde hair and violet eyes.

Yeah true Mirei is definitely a Ange type of character minus the attitude for rules and being a princess, but otherwise yeah spot on character especially just the design.

According to promotional material, the transformations are caused by a virus of some sort, and the girls have to fight each other to keep the virus under control… or something like that.
I don’t know, it’s a flimsy excuse for yuri porn that pushes the border between soft and hardcore, and for weird ridiculous fights with impossible weapons. I don’t know if I’ll stick with it, but I might give it another episode or two to see if anything comes of it. I kind of doubt anything will, though.

Yeah but a lot of ecchi themed anime has some dumb reason why sexual things happen and the yuri moments to transform into weapons is rather dumb xD
