First Impression – High School Star Musical

So… do they do this every morning or what?

As I explained to the other writers here at Metanorn, I just can’t turn down talking about a show where the student council of sorts breaks into song and dance about how fabulous they are.

Well, it’s another anime about a guy getting inspired by a random encounter that decides his future passions. The synopsis isn’t really that eye catching, which is why I overlooked this when I first saw the fall list. …Then some guy appeared to sprout wings because he danced in the rain so fabulously, and the episode had me hooked. I mean, who wouldn’t want to join a school if they saw that? Nayuta has the right idea.

The main character’s team is pretty varied in personalities. We have the angry guy who seems to have an issue over his older brother being extremely successful (or something to do with his brother at least), the other angry guy who’s already a pro in show business, the guy with confidence issues, and the guy who showed up late. But Nayuta is different because he’s really cheery and talks to everyone with the same level of enthusiasm. Yes, what a refreshing idea for a protagonist. Though he’s the only one in the group who seems capable of treating everyone normally. …Or in other words, the best lynchpin/leader type because he’s probably the last one who will cause an issue. Just look at his insert song. His cheerful optimism is infectious.

…Yeah, the characters are all pretty cliche. But despite that, the cheesiness made the episode pretty enjoyable. You just have to love the worlds of musicals where people break into song and dance and this is treated like it’s completely normal. Do the generic characters watching hear the background music and the absent guy’s voice? Or are the onlookers just transfixed by the sound of singing and shuffling of clothes? How does the absent guy even know where they are in the song? Damn, musical logic is great.

Plus with coat tails like this, how could anyone say no.

We all knew that the guys getting the red line through their names were going to be chosen for a Star Team just due to the OP. But it was interesting how the show made it seem like they weren’t going to be chosen. I guess since it’s Ootori’s group, he probably chose the underdogs for one reason or another (since he seems like a loose canon of sorts). The logic behind their Star Team’s formation will probably be explained in the next episode, but for now it was interesting getting to see the audition process. For the music department, they seemed pretty picky. Though since they’re the most prestigious people in the school, they probably set their standards pretty high.

So what does the future hold for the Star Team? …Well, there’s such a potential for angst in the future with 2 of the group already showing attitude problems. But aside from that, the team probably needs to go to lessons to learn some of those fabulous dance moves the Kao Council has so they can break out into impromptu song numbers wherever they go. Maybe we’ll even get a training montage! I guess there’s the other Star Team (presumably) they kind of showed (which is probably led by Tsubasa if they are one, since he seems kind of at odds with Ootori) too. Or if they aren’t a Team, they’ll appear sometime.

Honestly, if the characters just danced all episode like this, it would still be amazing.

Wow this was fabulous.
It’s like the second coming of Utapri! Minus the romance and unusual character designs of course, but there’s already plenty of ridiculousness and cliches in Star Musical. Plus who knows, there could be romance eventually in the future (though even if there isn’t, that’s not going to stop the fujoshi). The songs all seemed pretty catchy and if you hadn’t already guessed, I’m a big fan of the random singing and dancing. I hope this show keeps up with the same level of cheesiness like this in the future episodes. There’s not anything really intellectual in here at all, but that’s fine with me.

I rather like these cliches. The characters wear them well, and the story presents them in earnest. And yes, I does present itself according to logic of all muscials; which is a fine bonus. I found myself enjoying the first episode more than I thought I would. I’ll keep up with this one.

    Bonus Musical Stuff!

So, there are a lot of praiseworthy stuff in here. I think the character design are great, they all sing really well, and the dancing animation is awesome as well. And I like the MC and his friend. I hate the red-haired guy. The other two, I’m not sure.

But let me set one thing straight. I hate Kao council. Only because they look so obnoxious singing that song. Just read the lyrics!!! They are just telling to the plebes that they are so awesome no one can reach their feet. And if it’s true or not, that’s beyond the point. It’s annoyingly self-confident and I hate it.
