Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai – 12 [END]

Shimoneta - Hyoka is electric

Hyoka jump starts this show…

winter15-highwThis show has been an up and sometimes a little down ride, but after the story seemed to end last episode what were they going to dial up for this episode?

Going Out on an OVA

Shimoneta - Anna's got a hold of something

Anna’s got a hold on Tanukichi

Shimoneta joins the group of shows that finishes out with a standalone episode after having a multi-episode story arc. Sometimes that can feel anti-climactic, but in this case I think that it works out for the show. If they had shoehorned this episode into the middle of the latter half of the season, it would have felt completely incongruous, plus it would have left the previous arc as the last thing we’d seen of the show. So I can’t complain too much about having a one-off episode here, and especially one that brings back a lot of what made the show a lot of fun.

Shimoneta - Aww, this was cute

Cute embarrassment here

This really was also typical of an OVA in that it managed to get all the characters into one episode. Not only did the main group of Ayame, Tanukichi, Anna, Otome, and Kosuri get time, but also Goriki, Tsukimigusa, Binkan-chan (in her short-lived role as a prefect-in-training), Hyoka, and even Anna’s mother. They also managed to work it into an onsen episode by having everyone invited to a “Health” oriented town. I’m not quite sure what to make of the fact that the healthy town is nigh-unto abandoned, as the implication seemed to be that it was a town of immorality or something. And there is definitely a secret that Tanukichi’s father knew about the town, as he had years ago given Tanukichi an odd device to take to “Nukumi” when he went in the future.

Shimoneta - Forces arrayed

I liked Ayame’s phone hooked on her pants

Finding the Treasure

Shimoneta - Congrats Binkan

Congratulations Binkan!

The town is described as “Pure” but I think it’s better described as “sanitized.” We get to see the litany of ‘healthy’ things that are done, including gender-segregated folk dancing. Everything’s stuff that’s ‘healthy’ for you, and usually not very interesting. But the interesting stuff starts happening right away when everyone’s clothes are stolen and replaced with black underwear, and Sophia is knocked out. In the end, tho, the ‘treasure trove’ that they risk life and limb on a rusted out cable car to find turns out to be a bunch of naked and phallic sculptures. Not to mention the building it’s all in (which reminds of the Florida legislature). Ultimately, it was mostly an episode to give us a reprise of the characters and situations the show has used all season.

Shimoneta - Suggestive Buildings

Does this look like anything to you?

Through the first 5 episodes, Shimoneta was running away as the best show of the season for me. A lot of fun, edgy, exciting, and really enjoyable to watch. I especially liked the interplay of Ayame, Tanukichi, and Anna, and the tension generated by Tanukichi’s hiding his involvement with SOX. Unfortunately, it felt like the balance was tipped a little too much in the second half of the series, as the show finished off the first LN and moved into the second. The character quirks were turned up too far, moving them from mere quirks to defining them and their actions. The plot arc in the second half was pretty disappointing too, with White Peak just being a terrible villain, and Kosuri being a character that I just didn’t care for, and that was before she became a backstabber. And while I mentioned the quirks being turned up too far, I think that the way Anna became is worth special mention. She lost every other bit of her character, and became just this single-minded “I need to jump Okuma-kun’s bones” monster. If we just take the first half of the season, I’d rate this show pretty much a 10. But ultimately, the second half really dragged it down, and for me it ended up as about an 8. And following that trajectory, you can’t help but be a little disappointed.

The late Christopher Lee said “You should try everything twice, except for incest and folk-dancing”. I wonder if the last Sir was aware of the recent LN explosion?

This was a perfect way to end the show. As you said, the last half was just sheer bonkers, so it’s good that we have the cast leaving us with such fun memories. An Onsen OVA/Episode is good for that, and I’m happy they were able to twist what few tropes the did bring up.

I think and 8/10 is a pretty good mark, I would have given it maybe a seven. For the record, I actually liked Kosuri’s character, especially when she was a backstabber. She operated exactly as advertised, and gave us a clear distinction between SOX and White Peak.

Ah well, fun while it lasted!

I thought that Kosuri, in her best moments, gave us a third way besides those of White Peak and SOX. The problem was that her best moments were rare, most of the time she was just a selfish brat, and I found Yui Horie’s performance fairly annoying here. I also got a little tired of the “Hur hur, Kosuri looks like a penis” jokes.

        …rarity lends to better appreciation…

Actually, when Ayame mistook the penis statue for Kosuri, I thought that was well worth the laugh…

Unfortunately, it felt like the balance was tipped a little too much in the second half of the series, as the show finished off the first LN and moved into the second.

Light novel readers have criticised later volumes for its repetitiveness, saying its basically “75% corny sex wordplay jokes, 10% plot, and 15% sexy fanservice”.

    • Highway says:

That mix might be better than the 50% Anna Stalking, 30% ridiculous gross villain, 15% sexy fanservice, and 5% plot that we got for the last half of the series…

Great end to a super funny series even though for me it felt like watching Gintama/SYD with all the sexual humor thrown in, but Shimoneta also had a really unique story and obviously the themes of opression made it addictive!

Character wise I didn’t really feel the romantic vibes between Ayame and Tanukichi like in episode 11? That was so random and sudden or is there any real pairings? Cause you had Anna who was more of a crazed sexual yandere/stalker type, but she was always my favorite because she was crazy and every other character has their pros and cons.

Think we will get a second season? For some reason I say no because the final episode felt like a compete package ending.

    10/10 I need moar porn.
