As mentioned at the end of the ep, I’m gonna be doing this weekly for the Spring ’15 season with a different team member each week (in my neverending quest to retool this podcast as much as possible to find something that sticks).

For those that are interested, what would you like for us to do with the podcasts recorded during Spring ’15? How do you feel about podcast length? Is the bare bones-esque production ok, or would you like a little more oomph in post-editing?

Did anyone here follow Garo or Cute Defense Club? What’s the verdict?

Ps. At least there’s more Testament for this Fall.

    • BlackBriar says:

Speaking of Garo, I’ve been slipping on that. My last viewing was episode 17.

Ps. At least there’s more Testament for this Fall.

Tsk! A whole 2 seasons to wait to see Maria again. Damn it!

    • skylion says:

Not at all. I hope OC can drop by and help you out on that. And I tried after two episodes. It seemed to silly to follow.

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

Somehow, ended up not in a mood to follow cute shotas.

      • skylion says:

It wasn’t necessarily the cute bishounen aspect that turned me away. It was just the force feeding of Mahou Shoujo tropes into a male environment. If it has something to say with that, I didn’t hear it during the first two episodes. I just felt cheeky and nothing more…

    • zztop says:

I heard Cute Defense Club was quite popular in Japan.

    • Overcooled says:

I saw all of Garo and it was my absolute favourite this season! It’s a wonderful adventure story that really does an excellent job developing characters so you feel like you’ve watched them go through a complete transformation. On top of that, you have balls-to-the-walls action almost every episode and it looks fantastic. It’s a fun adrenaline rush with a hell of a lot of substance you would never expect to get from this kind of show.

Cute Defense Club I dropped halfway because it stopped being funny once the charm wore off. It tries to turn around and say “haha magical shows are so dumb” while still using the magical formula…so it ends up falling prey to the same cliches.

  3. Di Gi Kazune says:

Oh God… The FantaNorn summary. My nightmare has been rendered physically. x_x

  4. Di Gi Kazune says:

Let’s see… *plugs values into Excel*

Your total scores from the 3 critics does not add up.

The main table adds up, but the subtotals S,H,F don’t. eg. World Break is 89. The individual sums to 89. S+H+F is only 76. S total is 27 where the direct total of S is from character to overall is only 25. H total is 26 which is the same as the direct total of 26. F is 23 vs 25.

However, it then becomes messy for the other shows. The summary scores vs my totals:
    S: 27,24,7,19,13 (25,23,7,20,15)
    H: 26,23,15,19,7 (26,21,16,20,7)
    F: 23,18,9,27,13 (25,17,9,26,13)

However, the sum totals of everyone is still 270. It looks like wrong addition… Hover, it excludes the 45 points from overall. However those 45 points doesn’t affect the overally analysis of the results much.

Using my recalcs (without counting the 45 overall points)
    1) World Break was the highest rated from all 3 critics with an average score of 25.33 with SD of 0.58, meaning that the critics agree consistently.

    2) Isuca and Fapnir were equally terrible with average of 10.67 and 11.67 respectively. (SD of 4.73 and 4.16 respectively – also the largest and 2nd largest SD for all the shows) Both are either the the bottom or 2nd bottom for all critics. However, the average spread shows that they are not consistently the worst in every category.

    3) Absolute Duo actually squeaks into 2nd place over Shimai Maou. Average of 22 vs 20.33. They had SDs of 3.64 vs 3.055 meaning that there still was a rather wide spread of scores. Mainly because of a CERTAIN critic.

Again, note that these do not include the 45 points from overall. If we include those, the numbers look like this:
    Averages: 29.67,24.33,12.33,25.67,13
    SD: 1.53,3.06,5.13,4.62,4.58

As said before, does not affect the overall analysis much except the spreads are wider.

In summary: Absolute Duo was not a complete waste of blogging although questions must be asked why was World Break left out. Fortunately no one did Isuca or Fapnir.

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

The author declares that they have no interests nor are holding any interests nor stand to have any monetary gain from the shows involved. This purely academic meta-analysis was just taken for fun.

    • Highway says:

The author totals don’t include the Beach / Onsen category which was a late add and didn’t make it into the sums for the authors (which were adding discrete cells) but did add into the Overall (which was a ranged sum). And yeah, the lack of a Beach episode, compared to an apparently strong one for Duo, did switch the relative position between those two. And because it was a late add (as in after we finished recording), the discussion ended up different from the chart.

Not that it matters. If the results weren’t what we wanted for the overall, we were going to just ignore them anyway. 🙂

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

The lack of onsen/beach category doesn’t explain the differences. I think a Florida happened. 😛

If the results weren’t what we wanted for the overall, we were going to just ignore them anyway.

Numbers are the foundation of our species! Without good numbers there will be no S2 or S3 or DxD Reborn! or Shimai Maou.

In other news, Isuca sales bombed despite the uncensoring of guro and beewbies.

        • skylion says:

Statistics will lie if the statistician is less than honest. I learned that in SOC 202: Field Research.

          • Di Gi Kazune says:

            One more time:

Numbers are the foundation of our species! Without good numbers inflation there would be no such thing as AKB48 cd sales!

Maths proves that Absolute Duo isn’t as bad as it was made out to be! (Thanks to certain someones.)

Mind you, it might be someday I’d come back to rewatch one of these so-called terrible quintet. Like I did with Itsuka Tenma no Kurousagi. Nice to watch but it was all over the place.

            • skylion says:

if numbers are the foundation, then fudging is the rest of the house…

            • Highway says:

There are many things that are not measured. The unmeasured and immeasurable also add to the experience, and frequently weight much higher than the numbers.

            • Di Gi Kazune says:

Our challenge is to measure the unmeasurable!

  5. BlackBriar says:

Nice podcast and Fantasy Harem Table. I’m amazed to see Isuca as part of it. I was sure that series would end up on the blacklist.

    • Highway says:

It wasn’t offensive. It was just… Arms. There was some cheapness, there was some bad censoring, there was some not great direction. But it was still worth the time it took me to watch it.

  6. Highway says:

Just because it’s an excuse to post something silly, there was actually something fun to come out of Blade Dance
