Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works – 02
Meet moe-moe-Kotomine Beautiful Words.
No seriously, that is what Kotomine Kirei’s name translates to and no surprises here knowing Nasu’s tendency for puns. Anyways, I’m sure I’m not alone in being sad to see the long episodes go. But there was enough fan bait to keep me calm during the watch. For the new watch, there was a lot of talk but this is necessary we move to the interesting upcoming development. Like before, let me warn you that the Spoiler tag (minus Extra section), is only for the people who have read the VN or watched Fate/Zero and/or UBW movie. Please use accordingly in comments as well.
Learning to be a Master 101: The events which led to Shiro stopping Saber from harming Archer, separates the storyline from the first fate route of the visual novel. We are safely in a new territory for the people who watched the ghastly adaptation by DEEN. For Fate/Zero watchers, this is a perfect continuation because there is a lot of foreshadowing on the previous war and what really conspired. Thus, we have Rin as a knowledgeable source to lay things out for our baka-protagonist, who has zero knowledge about what abomination he just walked in. You can’t really blame him though because he was unaware of the Grail War and Kiritsugu only taught him some basic magic. His original plan was to never see Shiro involved in this ritual at all but tough luck from fate is all I can say.
Being a novice Magus is the worst-case scenario in a Grail war but drawing the best card of Saber out of the lot is no laughing matter either. There is of course cause and effect and by the conclusion you will know it all. Rin is undoubtedly acting out all other masters’ frustration in seeing some greenhorn possess the best servant. Add a do-gooder tendency to the mix and you are left wondering how long this guy will survive in the cutthroat business of the Grail war? For a bit of foreshadowing, the previous war had a novice as well but he was a mass-murdering psychopath, with a Caster servant to complement his incompetence in magic. Thus, Shiro’s situation is unique as a total novice and not even being able to provide mana to Saber, which she would need not only to function in physical form but in combating other servants as well. We will come back to this discussion after a bit more progress.
Holy Grail War Supervisor: Like I promised last time, meet Kotomine Kirei aka Mr. Yorokobe Shounen, the only survivor of the fourth Grail War. Being voiced by Nakata Jouji, who tweeted back to me again btw, already adds a lot of presence and pressure in his character. As Ufotable loves their dark interiors in too-much-information episodes along with a lot of circling around, the Shinto church was much darker than the visual novel version. However, it doesn’t matter as the shadows across the pews and even on Kirei’s face were quite complementary to the ode of sorrow he preached about the Grail wars.
The conversation was very much layered because of Rin’s presence and Kirei not being forthcoming in facts. The only thing I can say here without spoiling anything is to take everything he said with a grain of salt. Do notice that Saber didn’t enter the vicinity and she does remember the previous account of war. Kirei’s loyalties are literally split between Church, Magus Association and his own wily ways. Not to mention, he was the first Magus needing Church’s protection in the previous war once his servant was killed. Though, he did get to the Grail in the end and it was him that Rin referred to being weak, not Kiritsugu as the Grail chose him first not Kirei.
It’s interesting how Rin is a better teacher to Shiro even when Kirei should have been due to his supervisor role. She gave him another option of having servants fighter each other for victory rather than giving a kill-the-masters message like Kirei. Whatever philosophies Kirei would spew, every master has to decide on his own on how to take things further. Some like observing and strategizing, while others go by moments notice but for our Shiro as he’s partnered with Saber, danger would come to him even if he doesn’t go out actively to look for it.
Seigi no Mikata II: However convoluted the discussion was with Kirei, he did one thing right, on homing the cause of fire that Shiro was a victim of to previous Grail war. This gives Shiro a clear objective of winning the Grai war so that it doesn’t land in some bastard’s hands. Though, this wish is very idealistic and done without much knowledge, so Kirei’s pegging of Shiro as Seigi no Mikata was perfect. This dude is too wily for any situation.
Now we have a pumped up Shiro, willing to form a partnership with Saber and that handshake was a sight to see. Even when it’s new for our hero to depend on others, he’s quite taken with this blonde beauty being his familiar and the bossy twintails whose real personality is much more interesting than his school’s ice-queen. She is adamant in parting ways but I don’t think this will happen any time soon with a relationship already forged from saving each other’s life.
You should have caught on by now, as all the emphasis on graveyard was a hint of an upcoming fight there with the arrival of previously seen loli and her giant servant. Things are going to get heated in no time.

This might not have been an exciting episode for some due to all the talking but as a fan I was waiting literally in a line for Mr. Yorokobe Shounen. Internal kyaaing aside, deem this a lull before the storm because we have a major development in the next episode with everyone’s favourite loli of this series. I’m really looking forward to the action hinted in the OP theme and further progress.
I have covered most of the world building background in my previous editorials so starting next week, we’ll move along with the plotline. This is where I recommend you to watch Fate/Zero if you haven’t already because you will understand and enjoy this story so much more.
Preview: For the next episode, look forward to Berserker action, which will be epic! Any guesses on the identity of this dude?
Spoiler alert: Even when most of our readers are Fate oldies, do make sure to add spoilers under the [*spoiler]text[*/spoiler] tag (remove * while using), so that the new watchers are not spoiled out of the fun.

Glad I watched F/Z when I did, or else I would have missed all dat Kirei subtext.
But this is the thing that gets me. It’s almost like the Holy Grail itself is never meant to be grasped, at least not like the propaganda makes it out to be. In that respect, it feels like the perfect MacGuffin, showing more about the characters that chase it rather than saying anything about itself.
And yes, cannot wait for the next episode. It will be interesting to see the “real” Illya.
POWUH: Meta Team and Ringleader Extraordinaire~ with 6433 comments
IKR? This is double the fun when you have seen the prequel and ufotable has truly made it so.
I like it how Nasu’s grail is presented as the real thing at first but then gives you a punch in the gut because it’s so much more. The whole spiritual energy and actually having its own agenda really does make a difference. But really, we get glued because of characters more than the big plot.
With how things are going, the real Illya will shock you but she’s badass so you’ll enjoy your sojourn until… Team Kirei.

Amazing how adding a simple jacket can do wonders to Shirou’s image. He looks so cool in that. Much better than his usual white and blue shirt.
That Yorokobe. That glorious voice(based Nakata Jouji). That smug look. Here comes the founder of the Yuestu club, Kotomine Kirei. Though being that this is UBW, he won’t shine as much as in Fate and HF. Still, he’s a mysterious guy that just has a big placard that says “Don’t trust me”. Definitely a fake priest. Still one of my favorite TM characters.
Infodumps and some small hints here and there, though if anyone hasn’t seen F/Z yet, one wouldn’t know what those hints mean. As it should be as it kind of ruins the mystery that F/SN does in those plot points by knowing them from seeing F/Z.
Which is why I always insist that one should start from F/SN first(the VN of course and not the DEEN version) and not from F/Z even though the latter is the prequel. It’s just how it was intended.
Seems ufotable is making UBW with the knowledge that one has seen F/Z and I’m not sure I agree with that entirely.
This deserves a discussion so I’m open for some feedback.
And of course all that Rin and her tsundere antics. Best girl. Her
anusbutt has been the focus of most discussion since yesterday. Can’t say I dislike it though.Next week, Bahsahkah and Illya. Coming off from 2wei does leave some mixed feelings about this but that’s how it is. I like how the preview shows a glimpse of what’s to happen. I need to pay attention more to that.
Don’t rub those tweets in our face. I’m getting so jealous. I still can’t find any motivation or a reason to make a Twitter account. Seems like a waste to just do it for that. And I’m swamped from different things already when browsing at home. Anime, manga, games, lurking, VN. Adding tweeting is out of the question.
POWUH: and LOLi Defender with 10998 comments
I would argue that you can get enough of Kirei’s character from this without previous F/Z viewing. But then, my argument comes from my Swiss cheese like memory. Even in forgetting stuff, the gist is the same in both series about him. He’s a manipulative shit…
I’m on dear tenterhooks for both Berserker and Ilya, especially after my coverage of 2wei. I’m spoiled as to what is to come. But that doesn’t mean the path is known to well…oh, tenterhooks.

Kirei’s initial character without reading F/Z and the ending of FSN would be: “I am just a simple priestly supervisior-Jedi, like my Father before me.”
POWUH: Meta Team and Ringleader Extraordinaire~ with 6433 comments
You simply can’t enjoy Kirei without seeing Fate/Zero or playing the VN. And he IS a character to be enjoyed to utmost. 😉
POWUH: Meta Team and Ringleader Extraordinaire~ with 6433 comments
Shiro looks baws with the new jacket. With this episode, the ufotable guys even did a showing of that jacket and I have to say, it’s pretty sweet. This and his school scarf really adds nicely to his visage. And a less lame Shiro is always welcome!
All TM Nakata Jouji voiced characters are my favourites but really the bastardness of Kirei is unmet for now. He’s too awesome for words and his manipulation knows no bounds. His voice makes the infodumps bearable. For me, him and Rikya Koyama can keep me enthralled just by talking. Really.
I would’ve agreed with you on starting from F/SN before but after ufotable adaptation and how they have connected the dots with the Shiro and Kiritsugu scene at the end and driving episode one almost around the point has really made these two stories complementary. Sure, I would have originally liked for them to start from fate route but with UBW, things are flowing better and it just works. I’d actually recommend people to watch Fate/Zero and this so that they can get caught on all the sweet hints rather than being in the dark.
Rin was amazing this episode, her tantrum ftw! And Illya should be awesome in the next episode. About twitter, I guess, it would only be attractive once you have used it for years (I joined in 2010), and have people to interact with there. My timeline is pretty rich with industry celebrities and other anibloggers so it’s fun. For new users, it’s always a long journey.

One of the things that kept me from getting too interested in Fate/Zero was what seems like a horrible mismatch from the way Kirei looks and the way he’s voiced by Jouji Nakata. Either one is fine, but the combination of the two is just (still) not working at all for me. Same in this show. I just don’t believe that that voice comes from that guy, and that just pulls the whole show away.
Aside from that, all I keep thinking about is “Rin can’t bring herself to kill Shirou, and Shirou wouldn’t kill Rin.” That’s the way it seems.
POWUH: Meta Team and Meta-Analyst with 3844 comments
Seihai-kun says 10 years of corruption does wonders to a person’s mental health. Fuu-Fuu-Fuu…
Of note, Seihai-kun is voiced by Sakura.
POWUH: and LOLi Defender with 10998 comments
That oddiment of VA to character kinda works for me. Kirie is a bit displaced in terms of what he represents, and what he actually is…
POWUH: Meta Team and Ringleader Extraordinaire~ with 6433 comments
You are that minuscule 0.0001% who think Jouji Nakata doesn’t suit Kirei. He’s literally a father figure and shady villain for most of the TM-franchises so I adore him.
@ DGK, Show ▼
POWUH: Meta Team and Spammy Tamer with 7115 comments
He suits the character fine. I think it’s more of an issue with how the character is drawn. The look of the character just doesn’t have the gravitas that such a voice would demand.
POWUH: and LOLi Defender with 10998 comments
In what way should he be drawn? I’m eager to your answer…
POWUH: Meta Team and Spammy Tamer with 7115 comments
More lines on his face, more appearance of age and experience. I would actually say that in this, the voice is fine for the character, but in F/Z, the drawing was fine for the character and the voice didn’t fit. With the extra age, the sonority comes into its own. Either way, in both cases there’s a mismatch from the way I think it should be.
POWUH: and LOLi Defender with 10998 comments
Experience doesn’t have to tie into age. This is a guy that has been steeped in this awful culture. In a rather dreadful way, I’m thinking of the faces of refugee children. They should not have the desperate face they possess…

He is aged 33 in Fate/stay night so there can never be lines on his face. He’s not an oldman but his depth of voice is a character trait due to his background and I’m not only referring to Fate/Zero here but his days in Church training, Theological studies and failed marriage.

Instead of worry about gay marriage, the Catholic Church should allow priest to marry so that we can have sadistic Father and daughter pairing. How Beautiful would a Father and daughter pair like that be… 😀 Serious, Nasuverse Church is KICKASS.

While so many those who are very experienced with Fate/Stay Night may advise anyone against watching the prequel, I consider myself be glad that I watched Fate/Zero beforehand, I can spot these subtle layers you pointed out, thus it makes watching this anime much more entertaining. That little reaction when Saber realised that she’s once again summoned by Emiya and the cautious action, she’s taking, I give the credit to UFOtable referencing their previous adaptation with an accurate nimbleness.
I have played the visual novel a little before and very surprised the whole anime feels quite gloomy in contrast to the original source. It may just be me but I guess it’s just the last scene of the Fate/Zero left in such a large impression on me, the atmosphere here is a lot solemn and not so shonen-ish. It is a good thing that it has that impression.
Lastly, I can’t help but laugh at Kotomine’s discrete way of speaking. I know he’s probably being amused himself to speak to the utterly clueless shonen, of adopted child of his former nemesis. As for Rin, she is little too lenient with Shiro. He may have one of the strongest servant but hypothetically, if he participated in the previous holy grail war, he’d last not too long.
And it feels like I’m the only one who actually likes all these exposition. I don’t mind action but I appreciate the scenes with character interactions more.
POWUH: Meta Team and Ringleader Extraordinaire~ with 6433 comments
Actually, I wouldn’t and rather recommend watchers to check it out first because ufotable has really streamlined the storyline into one with their adaptation. I’m loving all the small hints.
About visual novel, which route have you played? Fate route is much lighthearted than say UBW and/or Heaven’s Feel. Though, just like the church scene I referenced, ufotable loves their dark rooms and such. And Fate/Zero is pretty gloomy compared to the entire FSN franchise.
About Kirei, you appreciate him so much more if you know what went down before. It’s like his entire conversation about the fourth war was an inside joke and Nakata Jouji does deliver all of it, including the way he pronounced RINNNN. And don’t worry about Rin being too easy on Shiro, she’ll be an embodiment of strict teacher soon. 😉
On exposition, you and me both Soliloquy because whenever it’s anything Type-Moon, see me grin about the world building and such. Though, Rin and Archer dialogue till now has been quite amusing.
POWUH: Meta Team and Meta-Analyst with 3844 comments
What they have done is that it can be watched either set first. However, just like Star Wars, I recommend watching the Stay Night series first before doing the prequel.

POWUH: Occasional (51-75) with 51 comments
Sure it was an exposition heavy episode, but that really is a consequence of a highly detailed setting. At least most of that is out of the way so we can get to interesting stuff. I did like the little details UFOTABLE added though. My favorite addition is when Shirou gets an anxiety attack on the mention of the Shinto fire. Its very short, but it signifies how important that event was to Shirou. It’s a great way to establish him to new audiences without any dialogue.

DEEN did an awful job with the adaptation. Good thing is we have ufotable to enhance TM’s source material even more. 😉
POWUH: and Vampire Lover with 11746 comments
They sure took their time, though. 8 years to establish a reboot? Must have had a lot of uncertainty going on.
POWUH: Meta Team and Ringleader Extraordinaire~ with 6433 comments
Actually, it is not exactly 8 years because once DEEN had the adaptation rights, it must have taken a lot of time in getting it free to be adapted by another studio. Also, ufotable was busy with Kara no Kyoukai as well. Once Fate/Zero was decided on and it became a success, FSN was definitely the next step. I think actual progress happened in last 3-4 years with TM and ufotable relationship becoming stronger.
POWUH: and Vampire Lover with 11746 comments
A full three years between ufotable Fate shows. A lot must’ve needed to be mulled over.

Of course. This is a huge project. :3

Another really good episode, and I was able to get used to all the characters a little more. Shirou has become a little more tolerable, and I like the way his simple, everyman, boy scout bounces off her know-it-all, slightly spoiled nature. I like Saber a little more, and of course Archer is cool.
I really don’t have a feel for this Kirei guy yet since he’s mostly just an expository mouthpiece this episode. I have a feeling I’m not going to like the little loli girl at the end in the Russian-esque garb. Her high and mighty tone is already a bit of a turn off.
A good episode again. It’s a pretty good series so far. I’m nowhere as jazzed as some of you long time fans seem to be every episode, but I’m still liking it. It’s right now, ranked No. 3 in my shows of the season, under Shingeki no Bahamut and Psycho-Pass 2, and tied with Kokkuri-san and Gundam G-Reco. 🙂
I do have some questions though, however, if the answer is a spoiler for later events, you don’t have to tell me?
Firstly, I thought Archer returned Rin’s necklace back in the prologue right after she returned from healing Shirou. So, why exactly does Shirou have it now and he put it in his drawer?
Also, if a Master loses all his command seals and no longer has the right to be a Master, why does Kirei and his organization have to protect them. Shouldn’t the just be out of the competition and go on back to their original lives having lost? Why would Kirei have to protect Shirou if decided not to fight?
And, I was also confused by Kyokai’s statement in the review. Did Kirei win the last war? Or did Shirou’s adopted dad? (Sorry, I still can’t remember his name.)

Answers to your questions:
1. It’s a big spoiler so just keep that information about the necklaces on the back of your mind. It’s important.
2. Because the Grail can still select a Master if there’s a Servant that was left without one for some reason. And the most likely candidates to be selected again as Masters are those who were previous participants. That’s why Kotomine is suggesting that the fastest way to win this war is to kill the Masters so they can’t be any more trouble in the future.
3. Technically, it was Kiritsugu who was selected by the Grail but he rejected it. You can say that no one really won the previous war because no wish was granted and it ended in destruction.
POWUH: Meta Team and Meta-Analyst with 3844 comments
Not so technically, but a wish was granted but it was incomplete to my understanding.
Note: Massive spoilers ahead. Do not proceed if you want to live. -Team Kirei-

@Irene, glad you are on for the ride! I’m loving Bahamut myself with all its quirkiness. It’s such an epic.
My friendly TM-tards have already answered your questions but yeah, I’d suggest to keep away from all the spoilers. It would be fun to see at least a few people’s shocked expressions on what’s going down later. xD
POWUH: and Vampire Lover with 11746 comments
I’ve been seeing spoiler tags all around this post. Just how many deep, dark secrets are you TM-tards harboring?
POWUH: Meta Team and Ringleader Extraordinaire~ with 6433 comments
You seriously don’t want to know.
I think UBW posts are breaking all spoiler records on Metanorn.

You telling me that has only succeeded in making me want to push my luck. 😉
It’s a frenzy in here and an ideal breeding ground for the spam monster.

I’m keeping an eye out on our spamzilla. This post has really made him go omnomnom at least 3 times already.

That’s not shocking.

I think it has already broke the number of spoiler tags for everyother series combined… It’s like one post has used up months of spoiler tags in one go.

Why not? I’ve been exposed to this for quite some time. 😉 Though I doubt I’m experienced enough to generate walls of text like the rest of you.

Amazing, isn’t it? Now I don’t feel so self-conscious when I’m ranting about whatever I’m into. 😀

Fun thing about being obsessed over a fandom is being able to talk about it nonstop. Now that is always fun. :3

I apologize for being absent lately. Hurricane Gonzalo paid my island home a surprise visit 9 days ago. Left me one day without power but the rest of the time up until recently with no internet. A depressing experience. I was only able to make a few comments a while back because I was
abusingusing a relative’s internet connection at their house. Now I’m back and going on a commenting rampage to make up for lost time! How good it feels to return to the site I visit religiously. The backstabbing fake priest is back (See what I did there?) and boy, can he talk. Well, better for Shirou to have someone explaining all the tutorials than stumbling around the Holy Grail War, increasing possibilities of getting killed. Now, he actually has a chance of survival. Out of curiosity, I really wanted to see his reaction had Kirei told Shirou Kiritsugu was the cause of the fire he was trapped in 10 years ago.
Side note: I’ve grown accustomed to Kirei’s voice in Japanese but wonder what it would sound like in English. I know the role is in good hands since for Fate/Zero, his voice actor is Crispin Freeman and that guy has awesome range and talent.
Those unconvinced with Freeman’s capabilities as a voice actor, here’s his resumé:
Blood+: Haji
Durarara!!: Shizuo Heiwajima
Eureka Seven: Holland Novak
Hellsing/Hellsing Ultimate: Alucard
Naruto/Naruto Shippuden: Itachi Uchiha

We are glad to see you back, BB! Hope everything’s well? And thank you for your camaraderie, we love it! :3
Oh yes I know and it’s funny as hell. The fake priest suits Kirei so much because he really in no way a priest but still resides in Church. It’s like Nasu is literally poking fun at the character and others for multiple roles they have set out for him. I’m sure Kirei was bursting to tell Shiro some shady version of what went down but in reality, he had some hand in the destruction as well.
I’m not a dub fan but as sometimes Fosh talks about it and I do check out some clips time to time, I can say, Freeman is pretty good.
POWUH: and Vampire Lover with 11746 comments
Yeah, everything’s alright. Minor damage and a few uprooted trees. I can’t speak for the other areas, though. Thanks for the praise on the camaraderie. I love this site and I’ve been with you guys for a while. The beginning of November makes my 4 year mark. You can pretty much guess where I made my first comment. Right? 😉
Crispin Freeman is awesome and the guy seems to be developing a pattern. Alucard and Kirei Kotomine. That’s two roles he’s taken over from Jouji Nakata.

Hurricanes are always srs bsns! Just glad you are doing well. We love our oldies. ^^
I’ll definitely go check his Shizuo version.
POWUH: and Vampire Lover with 11746 comments
Your concerns are much appreciated.
I think you’ll really like Crispin Freeman’s version of Shizuo. Izaya is played by Johnny Yong Bosch.
POWUH: Meta Team and Ringleader Extraordinaire~ with 6433 comments
Bosch is another very renowned name, who I like from my limited knowledge on dub voice actors.

He’s mostly known for playing Ichigo in Bleach.
