Akame ga Kill! – 13

Akame ga Kill00004

Moe levels: MAX

Argh, so I missed a character dying in having Suma cover episode 11 for me. OTL Sure it wasn’t quite Night Raid taking another loss, but Stylish was kind of a main character, being part of the Jaegers. …Though he also had his death coming, since he was kind of an asshat.

It’s refreshing to see the Jaegers in comparison to every other bad guy on the show. Stylish doesn’t really count, since he kind of fit in with the rest of the capital on the “terrible person” scale, but Bols? The guy has a loving family. That’s probably a sign that he’s not entirely a terrible person. Sure that might be a cheap plot trick to get us to bother caring about his character more (besides how ridiculously moe he is), but it’s much better than having him as another person who gets off on the suffering of others like the rest of the capital. Even the deaths he’s caused seem to have been justified. Kind of. Though maybe saying “stop this plauge” is how the Capital gets its soldiers who don’t enjoy killing to eradicate entire villages for them. Actually, the person who pleaded innocence most likely was innocent as well, but the important part here is that Bols doesn’t seem to be doing this for fun, which separates him from most of the other antagonists out there.

Night Raid didn’t do a whole lot this episode. Or at least, action-wise, they didn’t. Lubbock raised a death flag by not only going into his (surprisingly not tragic) back story, but also talking about his crush on Najenda. His backstory didn’t mean much maybe, but talking about love is a pretty unfortunate topic in this show (unless it’s Esdeath talking, since she’s obviously going to stick around for a while to make things difficult for Night Raid). Lubbock is practically asking to be killed in the worst way possible, with the way Akame ga Kill! enjoys making it’s characters miserable. Chelsea also still has her death flag raised, since once again, Tatsumi’s optimistic heroism seems to have briefly reached her. Susanoo too, if Tatsumi is making plans in the future with him. Man, everyone who interacts with Tatsumi seems like they’re screwed.

Yep, Tatsumi is pretty much the same. Sure, he’s more of a badass now, but he still manages to maintain that same drive to help people that he had at the beginning of the anime. It’s interesting how even now, they’re still showing brief scenes of him training with members of Night Raid. He’s a shounen protagonist, so of course he’s going to constantly power up, but it’s kind of nice that they’re showing the scenes as he trains and learns things instead of showing us power ups in battle and going “oh right, Tatsumi totally learned this at some point even though he never seems to train onscreen. We didn’t make this up on the spot, honest!”.

Oh, I guess it’s worth mentioning the mysterious hooded character who probably let Stylish’s creations loose. Obviously the plot hasn’t bothered going into who he is yet, but now the Jaegers and Night Raid are inevitably going to meet and try to kill one another. Hell, Esdeath and Tatsumi have met up already. As quick as her love came on, Esdeath seems pretty loyal to her feelings for Tatsumi. …So good luck to him trying to escape her this time.

Suma pointed out how disposable some of the characters seem to be in this series, and after watching this, he’s kind of right. I never noticed it as much in the manga since the month-long wait between chapters makes things seem like they take longer, but a lot of the characters that die never seem to stick around too long. Seryuu’ relationship with Stylish kind of felt like it had more to it in the manga, but that was really the only difference. He was taken out just as quickly. …Which is kind of sad. But hey, not all of the Jaegers seem overly disposable. Esdeath will probably be around for a while, since she’s like THE biggest obstacle between Night Raid and the prime minister. Also, Kurome needs to have some sort of showdown with Akame at some point, probably.

Next episode? Cleavage. Lots of cleavage.

I wonder what Bols looks like without the mask.
I’m guessing freakishly ugly, weird or handsome(in descending order).

I’m assuming he wears that mask because his face is either severely burned or scarred to the point he is no longer presentable.

With the exception of the rightfully dispatched Stylish because he was a prick, the more I see of the Jaegers, the less I can identify them as bad guys. Especially with Wave who should win the best bro award and the reveal of Bols being a happily married man and family man. If the difference of point of views are pushed aside, they’re just like Night Raid but each side butt heads because one side carries ideals different from the other.

In a cruel, logical way, Bols wiping out a village because of a plague was pretty much a preservation method. A “Kill a few, save a lot” kind of thing but I doubt it would make carrying out the deed any easier to bear. Diseased or not, those were still people. The fact he has a sense of value of life and he’s accepting of the repercussions of his actions makes him a better person than Stylish.

The episode had its comedic parts played well. Between Kurome having such a voracious appetite she’s inclined to eating Danger Beasts and Tatsumi losing respect after an epic speech because his fly was down, there were a few good laughs.

I know Lubbock raised a death flag by telling for joining Night Raid but I’m also looking at Chelsea after her explanation last episode. I mean, any one of them could go. Lubbock must have a thing for older women.

Being Tatsumi is suffering. No matter where he goes, the guy can’t catch a break. To make matters worse, Esdeath’s found him again. Though I can already predict what will happen between them will make their situation more unstable than it already is. That and there’s moderate chance she finds out he’s a Night Raid member.

Next time, we’re getting a new OP titled “Liar Mask” by Rika Mayama. Let’s see if it’ll be on par or better than Sora Amamiya’s (Akame’s seiyuu) “Skyreach” for the first OP.

PS: This is irrelevant but I see you’ve gone back to one of your older avatars. That one is probably your favorite, huh?

Perhaps the author intends to mess around with his readers’s expectations on character survival.

For example, Black Bullet’s author admitted in his notes he enjoys trolling his readers:

” (I use)the sweet bait of “lolis, lolis here~~” and “boobs, boobs here~~” like a peepshow to entice the readers, (who) then turn the page to (see) disgusting scenes like heads falling suddenly to the ground or disemboweled guts…
(K)nown for underhanded marketing methods rare in recent times,(I), Shiden Kanzaki—(am)still energetically aiming for renewing the record for being the worst writer in all of history.

Bol’s family= How? When? but more importantly WHY!

Aw, come on.. They can’t all be cold-blooded killers, can they? A moral center’s got to be there somewhere. 😉
