Impending Collisions

Glasslip-Train symbolism

I love this bridge in this show

You don’t usually think of more than two trains being able to hit each other, but this show seems to have 3 or 4 on collision courses (and trains because they can’t move out of the way). We’ve already had the minor shock of Yuki confessing to Touko, and her utter surprise at it. And her response is to see if Kakeru can help her see more of the future to figure out how things are going to work. But on her own she sees Yanagi crying, and thinks that she’s going to be responsible for it. I don’t know if she really will, but I think that Touko can’t really be responsible for Yana and Yuki’s possible relationship going well or not. All she can do is what she’s done already: turn Yuki down.

Glasslip-Thinking about Touko

There’s only one person Sachi’s thinking of

But the rest of the group is on that collision course I mentioned. Yana’s got a strategy to publicly ignore that she saw Touko and Yuki, probably the best she can do right now. Hiro’s trying to work up the courage to confess to Sachi, while Sachi has her eyes firmly on Touko. Heck, this episode was even more “Sachi wants Touko” than last episode was, even while Hiro was stammering out his not-really-a-confession, and even getting some help from his older sister, Momo. Did Sachi pick up on the crux of that conversation, I wonder? Or was she so busy with her jet coaster ride and wishing she was holding Touko’s hand that she didn’t really pick that up. One of these days, more people are going to confess to the people they like, and then the real unhappy feelings will start, when they get turned down.

Enjoying Nature

Glasslip-Touko repositions

Touko repositions

PA Works hadn’t been showing off enough in the first two episodes, I guess, so this time we go up the mountain for a hike and sightseeing. It’s a beautiful setting, and a fun time for everyone, until Touko doesn’t realize that there’s a tap, taking Yana on a wild hunt for water they can’t drink anyway. But it’s a good excuse to get them to fall in the stream, and give Yana justification for bringing the battery powered hair dryer (a type of thing I didn’t realize existed). And to give them a chance to sit around in their underwear and talk about Yuki’s confession. It was nice to see the two of them work through this, although it certainly helped that 1) Yana saw the whole thing, 2) Touko’s not interested and never has been and 3) Touko’s more interested in Yana being with Yuki.

Glasslip-underwear conversation

A serious conversation

But those visions of the future seem to be getting a bit worse now. Yana crying. Sachi in the hospital. What is Touko going to start thinking of them, and if they’re bad all the time, is she going to wish they stopped? Will she regret saying “I want to see the future” to Kakeru? But do the visions even match up to anything? The one she heard before didn’t seem to…

Glasslip-Hiro and Sachi

Hiro tried, kinda sorta, but it didn’t happen

header-spring14-highw

Again, more of that wonderful unsettled feeling. This time a beautiful setting, and a lot of happy people, but still that worry. Hiro worrying about confessing to Sachi, the audience worrying about how she’s going to turn him down. And while I loved the tension of Touko’s answer to Yuki, I also loved PA Works’ attention to detail in that scene on the lookout platform. One of the most frequent descriptions of their work is “shiny,” but where I really think they ‘shine’ is in the details that make it much more realistic, like the rust on the painted steel supports and railing. It’s so much easier to make that just be a single color, and yet they never do. Life isn’t perfect, there are always things falling apart, always things that are scuffed, and rusting, and peeling, and broken. That’s what I think really grounds their work, even when it’s something that’s so supernatural, like people seeing the future, or living under the sea.

Arrrrgh. I was shipping Hiro and Sachi so hard. Maybe the thing that Sachi feels for Touka is like what happened in Tamako Market with Minori and Tamako. She wants what is best..and that hasn’t risen to her standards yet.

    • thorgriim says:

      ya….Sachi disappoints..that is all.

We don’t know enough about Sachi’s affection for Touko to really say, but I’m going to think that Sachi’s attraction to Touko is probably a bit more developed than Midori’s. I still thought that Midori’s reactions to Tamako were always pretty genuine for someone who was just starting to explore love. And Tamako and Touko do have similar “not really thinking about it” attitudes towards love.

But back to Sachi, I have to think that as sophisticated as she appears to be with her reading, she understands a bit more about her own attraction than Midori did. She certainly doesn’t have that “well, I feel like I have to protect her, maybe I love her” type of mindset, it’s more the other way around: “This is the person I love, and I’m going to protect her.”

  2. thorgriim says:

awww man Sachi, No No don’t fall for Touko, Don’t go down that path!! Oh well she has lost her way, However I was waiting for one of the girls to fall for Touko. tsk, Keep on trying Hiro because… Like Skylion I’ve already Shipped you two, Hiro and Sachi.. this will happen! He just needs to point her in the straight direction.

Like most of these type of shows, Touko is trying to make everyone happy, even at the cost of her own happieness, Rather she is not really being true to herself, long as her friends are happy then she is happy, which doesn’t quite work out that way.

And this show is doing well as far as keeping us suspenseful with the glimpse of the future that Touko can only ‘guess’ what they are actually about, which is how its suppose to be done, I was telling fosh the hospital bit that Touka sees,..”nooooo not glasses-chan!! but wait I bet she is just seeing Sachi at a checkup, yeah that all.. but I have a feeling it’s related to something later.. maybe..?

Other then that, hmm I felt bad for Yuki, took a bit to tell Touko how he felt, and she turned him down because of her friend, You’d think if it wasn’t for Yanagi, Touko would have went out with Yuki? she did say she doesn’t have anyone else in mind, But we all know that’s a lie.. it may not be Yuki, she just hasn’t thought about who yet.. so who knows

One thing for sure I’m enjoying this series more, at first I was sorta turned off by the supernatural aspect of this “future sight” bit, however its not as bad as I thought. It DOES add another layer to the story and I can’t wait to see what more and how she interprets them, she’s bound to miss-read some of them and I have a feeling she will relay on them to make sure everyone stays happy, that’s just not how it works Touka hehe. Anyways we will see how things play out, like I said, I’m enjoying this series So I can’t wait for more episodes to see how things start to pan out hehe, oh and Sachi.. stop being gay..

I disagree on a few points. I really think Touko is being honest that there are no “love alarm bells” going off when she thinks about Yuki. She’s just not interested in him, and all of the interactions that she’s had with him on-screen have been completely platonic except for his confession, and we saw her reaction to that. If Yana wasn’t there, maybe Touko would have thought about it more, and ended up with Yuki. But I didn’t see anything about her reaction that made me think she’s putting Yana above her own feelings. This wasn’t Minorin rejecting Ryuuji because she knew Taiga loved him.

I don’t think Touko really has anyone in mind at all. And I think that Sachi and Touko would be a really nice couple if they both wanted to be in that relationship. Being with the person you want to be with, if they want to be with you too, is the most important thing. But I don’t know if Touko loves Sachi that way either. I think she’s just someone who hasn’t really thought about who she loves.

And man, I can’t tell someone to not love the person they love. If that’s who Sachi wants to try being with, more power to her.

      • Joojoobees says:

When Sachi turns out to be the space vampire who is causing all the problems, you are gonna feel mighty foolish! Why do you think she barely has the power to walk about in the light of day?

        • Nerazim says:

ah, ut what if that’s what they want you to think, and Sachi’s been framed by the ever wondrous poultry? – the CHICKENS FROM SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE
surely you’ve played chicken invader, right? so you can, to an extent, understand the deviousness of space-faring flightless birds!!

      • thorgriim says:

yeah, I guess she didn’t really show and love reactions to Yuki, she didn’t even show a slight interest in him at all. I dunno I just bugs me what was the whole reason for Yuki’s confession? it also Does not seem Yuki actually knows if he has true feeling for Touko either, ya he confessed but I don’t remember him actually showing us he’s really into Touko.. maybe I wasn’t paying attention hehe. My point is.. Was this reasoning to show, A) a Wake up call to Yana to step her game up before Yuki is taken away? or B) Young love, we don’t really know who we want to be with right away, It’s to show what real love is like?

Ya Touka doesn’t seem to have anyone in mind, only to make others happy, That is the only happiness Touko needs? I find that hard to believe.. Yes she young and doesn’t really understand it herself, like you said She just someone who hasn’t really thought about who she loves, its not a choice to throw out there instantly.

That is what going Out with someone is about though, to get to know them before you know they are the one for you. Back to Yuki, Clearly Yana wants to be with Yuki, But does Yuki actually share the same feelings toward Yana? Maybe it’s way super early for this to play out.

As for Touko, she has no feelings for Yuki because she didn’t give him a chance to show it, and same can be said to him, Touko won’t know if she would come to like Yuki because Yana, So in a way she sorta is.. putting her ‘friendship feelings’ first before her own ‘maybe feelings.’ However.. I feel Yuki didn’t really seem upset with the rejection, kinda like.. “oh okies..” no fight! But maybe that’s just how guys handle it.. hehe ALSO Touko Is being fair in all of this, again She dosn’t have someone in mind, so kinda point him into the right direction, so Im not unhappy with this, we will see how things play out, its only the 3rd episode to play “declare relationships’ hehe

I think the main Theme of this series is “young Love.” no one truly knows who they wanna be with, some have an idea but its not final at this stage, sure you can find the perfect match right away, but other’s it takes a little more.

Finally, I love romantic series, Mainly Young love. I love seeing the courage these character face when confessing to, or watching how hard they try to make it happen, or even watching how the two get closer, The cute moments they share with each other leaving you with that ‘awwwww so cute’ feelings. Those feelings are what I love experiencing, maybe one day ill see what that is like in RL haha. I’m sure we all can relate why we like romantic series.

I did say finally, But LASTLY I do not mind girl loving girl, yuri, or Gay, I feel the same as you, I can’t tell someone to NOT love the person they love, I actually find it quite nice. BUT I Personal find it to be MORE romantic when its a Boy and a Girl, this is my personal feelings/taste, I find it to be more cuter and again more romantic. So yes more power to you Sachi, I just prefer you NOT to be hehe.

        • Highway says:

Yuki’s had his eyes on Touko the whole time, just like Yana’s had her eyes on Yuki, seeing that he was only looking at Touko. I think his goal was to have Touko go out with him. And as I said, maybe if Yana wasn’t in the picture Touko would have given him a chance to find out if she was interested, but with Yana being interested in Touko, she’s not going there.

I think Touko’s just not that kind of girl that’s thinking about love right now. If everyone else got a partner, she’d probably try to find someone, since it seems fun, and she’d think about it more.

One of the reasons that I watch romance shows is because it allows me to revisit some of the feelings that I had at the same point in my life. Sometimes it’s trying to get closer to someone who’s not as into you as you are into them, but other times it’s mutual “love at first sight”. That’s pretty much what it was for me and my wife, since we met each other at a party, spent pretty much all night talking to each other, and then went on our first date the week after that. And we’ve been together 25 years since then.

  3. HannoX says:

I was shipping Sachi and Hiro, too, but Sachi and Touko also works for me. Of all the characters in this anime I like Sachi best and want her to be with the one she loves and just hope that love is returned. The gender of the one she loves is unimportant. It’s not like anyone can decide, “That is the person I’m going to love.”

  4. Irenesharda says:

Well, I’m still just okay with this show so far. It’s fine right now, but it does remind me why I take SoL in only small doses.

As for parings, I actually really liked Touko and Yuki together, I don’t know but “David” is just not really connected to me. Other than being a catalyst, he hasn’t done that much, and he refuses to interact with the rest of the cast, so he feels like he’s in a development vacuum.

I like Sachi and Hiro together, they seem pretty cute. I can’t seem to place Yana with anyone, since I feel that Yuki really sees her as more of a sister or cousin figure than some one he loves. I actually see her more of going off on her own and becoming an independent woman in the city or something, maybe finding love later in life.

Well, anyway, we’ll see what happens next episode.
