Barakamon – 02

barakamon 2-7

So, this could have been a scene in Higurashi…

There is a certain wisdom that says that it’s not to artful to blog a weekly SoL program. But I think this show has quite a bit  in the tank to warrant going the distance.

The Measure of Talent

barakamon 2-1

Writing the greatest yaoi epic best loser…

It’s a very valid question. What is talent? Getting even better, who has it? We could charitably call Naru’s cicada shell collection mania a talent, yes, but what about the creative arts? I think it’s a very interesting place to start with Sensei, as Naru has said he claims to not have any. Now, this could be her hearing things out of context and not fully understanding just how down in the dumps he’s getting. More on Naru’s context in a bit.  No matter how Sensei slices it, you get what you make really. One of our new characters Hiroshi dwells on his past, and his various half-asseries. Those old fashioned water wells had you “prime the pump” You put in water first, to get more coming out. Yes, some have to put in much more water than they initially get out. But working hard towards a goal is a reward in it’s own way. If you shoestring it, you get nothing more than a shoestring. But for all the hard work Sensei gives to his craft, he isn’t feeling quite there yet. And there are always some who just “don’t get it”. Which is what this episodes newcomers, Miwa and Tamako ably point out.

Myna Birds

barakamon 2-6

Monkey see monkey do

I thought it was quite a classic moment. Miwa rather points out that, “no, we didn’t teach her anything” in regards to the sorted and rather iffy language that Naru has picked up from hanging out with the older girls. I can tell you from experience, it happens in real life…and it’s even funnier scarier. Naru agrees with Miwa in this, and they try to sort it out, with Miwa tying the bow on the whole package, “she’s like a myna bird, just repeats what she hears”. The classic bit is that it really doesn’t let her off the hook does it? She’s aware of it happening. And she’s still at the age where she repeats what she hears as well.  But kids are gullibility machines, they have to be as a matter of survival. We can tell young children this that and the other til the cows come in. But they are watching and listening and learning more by what we do than we say.

Naru is ready…for ANYTHING!

Show ▼

It’s good to find the show has hit a splendid groove so early in it’s run. The production staff has given some tremendous work in using the source material. I always love the manga for it’s rather whimsical, yet sometimes sarcastic streak. They have not shrunk away from that in the show, from Hiroshi’s parents “congratulating” him for his upcoming life of mediocrity….just like theirs, to both Miwa and Tamako’s blase attitude towards Sensei’s home/their old secret base. And heck, I didn’t even hit up on the hospital scenes. I’m really happy to be blogging this show. Let me know if I get too darn pedagogical at times…

the fun continues! apparently one of the islanders’ favorite activities is barging into Handa-sensei’s place like it was the village pub (minus the alcohol) and turning his life upside-down. Naru presents her own daunting “talent” and Seishuu even meets the island ghost. the premise is already fine as it is, but it is the characters that make this series doubly entertaining. no wonder so many people are drawn to Barakamon. and i hope you guys continue blogging about this show on a per-episode basis (if it’s not too much trouble?) 🙂

If I can get comments and simultaneously not be preachy in terms of themes and such…

The only show I could think of that would have even more of me written on it would be a new cour of Ichigo Mashimaro…

            • thorgriim says:

Yes this would completely enlighten me greatly.. and I’d just die from cuteness overload and it would be awesomesauce for the heart, one day maybe *starts to dream*

dat random ghost at the end…

I thought that this episode was rather weak compared to the first, probably because there was less interaction with Naru. That must be because I became attached with her on the first episode and on the second they made sensei interact with a lot of new characters who I cared about less than Naru. It doesn’t mean that it was good stuff, but I want more stuff happening with Naru, with her teaching good things to sensei.

Also, sensei said that Naru was badmouthed but I don’t understand anything she says with that weird accent of hers. Does anyone know what she means with those weird words that even the subbers don’t know what they mean?

    • skylion says:

…pick your subber. I’ve yet to see anyone do a TL note on those phrases…Underwater has yet to release this episode, so who know?

I think the show could get weaker if it remains Naru centric. She is a high budget character in the narrative landscape, well spent in the first. Now they’ve got to save that buck for the bigger bangs…

Fun episode all around, less Naru but I’m happy we got to meet the other characters. For some reason seeing Naru with Miwa and Tamako reminded me of Kyousou Giga haha.

Talent, As many of ya might of read in the first impression post, I consider myself an Artist, So this episode i share a bit in common. I want to find my own art style that i can call my own. Friends family tell me im good, but like you said ‘Sensei gives to his craft, he isn’t feeling quite there yet.’ I’m not quite there yet hehe.

So Episode was fun cheery and fun for me, Naru is too adorably cool! Tamako in the hospital with the temperature thingy was funny to see.. she totally hoped he’d have it done haha. The ghost bit.. me and fosh keep saying “haha He the ghost watch..” good stuff. Akiko was silly, but dosn’t win best mom of the season yet..I think that one is going to Sabagebu!, Mokarin’s mom lol. And finally Sensei Hard to focus when kids are making his house their home/base silly kids.. they are just curious and worried because hes fun to mess with right?!

So ya fun episode that I enjoyed.. hopefully ya keep this going Skylion but again, I understand! See ya next week!

I see you’ve already signed me on for episode three?

I always feel that I’m not quite there yet. It’s what keeps me in pursuit.

This show is so cute, sweet, innocent, and yet oddly profound. I’m loving every minute of it. It’s a nice choice to watch while you’re winding down the day. Naru is the cutest thing. ^_^

    • skylion says:

I just which it was simulcast here in the states. That way I could get it on my tablet and watch on the way home, as my Saturday pub shifts can get darned intense…
