 Hello and welcome back to the wandering road show that is Hitsugi no Chaika. This week we get resolution, resolve, and  revolution! Well, maybe some revolution…

Runes. Magic Runes Everywhere.

Why do hostage exchange situations never go smooth? I’ll tell you why! Cause it’s more cool that way! People are already in mortal danger and that just gets more tense when some of them are tied up. Add cockatrices and it just get’s more awesome! Cool aside. Cockatrices were once thought to be the union of a rooster and a female lizard. Which goes to show that even in the sun rise to sun down mad working world of the Dark Ages, people still had some free time. It’s also said the baleful gaze of such horrid beasties can turn one to stone. Which they didn’t do here so much, and was stolen from the Greeks! Huzzah for free time mad culture thieving dung farmers. This was a damn good showcase battle. While it basically amounted to David, Akari, Toru and Chaika Red making lunch meat, I could watch much much more, especially Toru and Chaika Red’s fluid blade work.

And that was some great interference by Matthus and Leonardo. That Matthus can summon the pack, and confuse water wildlife too boot. I think he got a touch to excited with his powers, don’t you think? But it ended up being their undoing, as both parties bid a hasty exit from the scene. About the only thing they got was a bit more to go on with a new Chaika sighting. Did Gaz have multiples wives for multiple kids, ensuring a surviving bloodline? Leonarda has conspiracy brain, I think,

The twain shall never meet?

And again, things refuse to run totally smooth as they attempt another hostage exchange. This time you only have to blame Red Team for the blunders. They tried to use the same tactics of ranged attack on high. Akari may be an idiot, but she isn’t combat stupid. That was rather the clever feint to use a shapechanger for a misdirect. You have to add more awesome points for giving “Akari” nekomimi and tail!

But between these two scenes we get some rather juicy drama. Chaika Red has become enamoured of Toru and his fighting skills. So, why not hire him out from under Chaika White? That would be fine but for the point of pride. It isn’t just the money, but it is the desire to see the job through to the end. He could work well with Team Red, as she is obviously able to handle herself better than White. But leave poor Trabant in the dust? Unthinkable. And good on Toru. I think Fredrica was there just to make sure he made the right decision. As for that, it seems that working for the one that needs him the most, that does need protection and guidance is what he is truely after. I know we have to be getting some mad shippers on deck, and I wouldn’t blame you one bit. I’ve read some of the manga and Toru’s decision does rather fit what I’ve seen of his past. No spoilers here though.

So where does this leave good old The Corp de Gillette? Well, interestingly enough, we get a nice scene right in the middle of a big capital city, the Meeting of the Six Nations. As you would expect, as with hostage exchange deals, politics is just as messy and confusing. Farmer’s are in an uprise, poverty is nearly everywhere, and it’s all generally dour. And these guys have no patience for a Post War Agency that wastes time following up on rumors and not getting to the business of putting down serfs. No matter where you go the peasants are always revolting. So Gillette and crew are off the Chaika hunt and on dirt farmer duty. Show of hands…how many of you think Gillette is going to skip the peasants and stay on the hunt? Oh, look, that’s all of the hands.

Oh, White, Red just can’t quit you

…and who can blame her, as White still has Papa Emperor Gaz parts in her trunk remains in her possession. Now, Chaika may not have the physical presence that Red cuts, but she does have the Acrua’s. There was great team work on both sides, but in the end, a well placed Ze Flasher, a timely Iron-Blood transformation, and Akari running spoiler, and Team White comes out the winner. I love how Toru just owns Red. She just can’t win over her would-be employee. Yeah, that’s not going to boil well.

So that wraps up another week of Relic Hunt, and this two parter was much better than I expected. This show keeps surprising me, and I welcome it at every opportunity. We haven’t seen the last of Team Red, that is for sure. But now we got hints of yet more going on. Will Gillette break ranks, and if so why would he risk it? Saving the Six Nations, or does he have more invested?  What do you folks think?
