MetaVerse Episode 39: Thoughts on the Unblogged

metaverse39

We fill in the blogging blanks with a podcast talking Kill la Kill, Nobunagun, Space Brothers and more!

We try and cover as many shows as we can here at Metanorn. Even with a full team, it’s not easy to get every show coverage. As the Winter ’14 season is coming to a close, the MetaCast of Jrow, Fosh, lvlln & Highway talk about making it all the way through Samurai Flamenco, how much they enjoyed Kill la Kill’s finale, why Build Fighters is an enjoyable Gundam show and wonder why Mahou Sensou was made in addition to many more shows discussed. Enjoy, and surely we’ll be seeing you soon when Spring ’14 gets rolling!

At the beginning, what show did you lament an S2 over? I couldn’t quite here it.

    • Jrow says:

Wait, what? We talked Ano Natsu OVA, Gargantia OVA, and Macross sequel. I was just mumbling stuff about the last time I did a Metaverse episode at the very start, so nobody’s missing anything there.

      • skylion says:

My fault. I couldn’t hear the show Fosh was talking about, I should have made that more clear.

    • Foshizzel says:

      Sword art online I think…

      • skylion says:

No way, dude. Bring on Gun Art Online!

        • BlackBriar says:

Coincidentally enough, the arc Sword Art Online II is going to based on this summer is titled “Phantom Bullet”.

        • d-LaN says:

Phantom Bullet arc shouldn’t be that bad since it was generally agreed that Fairy Dance wasn’t that good compare to the rest of the arcs. Still more tolerable than Dusk Taker arc in AW though.

But then again, SAO have a dedicated hatebase.

        • Foshizzel says:

As I have said many times before about GGO I have read some of that arc and found it to be meh but I am going to watch it I was just making a joke hahaha

  2. skylion says:

Oh, Oreimo? If so, unfortunate…yes. Ugh.

  3. zztop says:

KLK:I recall there WAS a blogger covering Kill la Kill on your site, but then they just stopped after that. What happened?

BC: I wonder when Buddy Complex Season 2 will come, and what the writers are planning for the MC, since now there’s an entire nation out for his head. 😛

Nobunaga: I always post a detailed study of tarot themes and how they tie back to the episode on the comments page of the Randomc blog’s coverage of Nobunaga, under my name. Feel free to look it up if you are confused on how the cards tie back to each ep.

    • zztop says:

PS. Look under each episode post here, excet ep 1 since I hadn’t done anything then.

If I had to guess, the second season is going to air for Summer since the first was for Winter. The thing to notice with series that take a break period, they skip the following season and place the second half on the one behind. Here are the shows that have done just that: Fate/Zero (Fall;Spring), Gin no Saji (Silver Spoon) (Summer;Winter), Jormungand (Spring;Fall) and Kakumeiki Valvrave (Spring;Fall).

    • Jrow says:

For KLK, Verdant just never got to it past (iirc) ep. 10. He isn’t with us anymore. We lost him. Not to death, just that he isn’t on the team to blog anymore.

      • BlackBriar says:

Had to be something in real life he couldn’t afford to overlook. It’s a shame he couldn’t finish his run, though.

  4. skylion says:

D-frag! LOVE TO FIGHT! LOVE TO FIGHT! I loved how they took fresh takes on one comedic idea. The characters present most challenges as if there are set in stone, over-arching rules, then ignore those rules, make up their own, and then break them.

Hamatora. Uneven. That is all I can say. “They tried to hard”…yeah, Fosh.

Hoozuki no Reitetsu SOL in HELL! I watched all of it. Every single bit. Loved all of it. Wacky take of The Office, sort of. It didn’t phase me one bit that I was very ignorant about the cultural stuff. I actuall kinda like diving into things like that.

Kill la Kill: SAM KETCHUP! Did it save anime or not? Blah, who cares. It made so much of my Thursdays the past three months. I loved the Kill la Kill take on the Gainax Ending. The indulgence was that it took itself seriously by not taking itself seriously…or vice versa. Fun. That is the word.
Mako is a special angel of the universe. OMG I cried…I so cried when…Sanketsu…..OMG! And yeah, full court naked body press….cause they can. Good talk about they show guys.

Mahou Sensou: This was just Horrible. Capital H. The exposition was clunky, foolish, and idiotic. I gave it yea old three episode try, and when the bad guy gave the kids time to regroup and beat him, I turned it off. Yikes…..when the original creator says don’t make the show….

Za FOOOOOL! OMG I love this. It’s my not so guilty guilty pleasure. I think I love it best for Mistuhide’s mechanizations and all that. Hey, I am a huge history buff, and I care not one whit about the mish mash…it’s creative license it obvious.

Nobunagun. This is one I can’t put my finger on. I don’t know why I like it, but I loved it. Like HWY states, they just get so creative in how the powers were used, and I liked the character interactions. Yeah, lvlln, that was some tepid animation. Oh, it had Vidoq. The historical personage that Hugo based both Valjean and Javert from Les Mis on. He was a thief and then a cop.

Nourin. Oh, loved it. I thought the broad comedy worked well once they found their way to do it. I loved that powerslide! That was a great scene.

Flamenco: That had enough odd tangents of Kick Ass, and I started to enjoy watching it, just to say, “observe it”. If felt like a deconstruction where the only tools they had was a wrecking ball and a feather duster.

    * : Good bleep sound. Loved it. I love clever humor as much as I like toilet humor…and you either are for it or against it. I loved how they started the shipping wars. I want a cute little suzu. I’d hug her every chance I got. Go Hands just got off the chain with the animation. Very rich. I haven’t liked any other show they do, but I love this one hands down. Give me MORE!

Silver Spoon S2: Yes, comfort anime. I actually had my mom and dad watch some of the first season, and I let them see the Hatsuyuki fansub of the ED…they loved it. Phew. Yeah, Hachiken’s dad is such a problem. It’s like he want’s to raise ninjas by subjecting them to cruelty. Mom was awesome. Cheese is awesome. Losing the farm is not so awesome. One of the best shows around.

Space Brothers. Just hearing you talk about it, Jrow, is enough to make me kick myself for not watching it since around episode 14.

Wake up Girls! This was a hard show to get a handle on, HWY. It felt like a bit of invective against the idol industry, but it never really went there. Yes, the animation was just wretched. Probably even worse than Wizard Barristers. I liked it, but it was a hard like. Oh, she had to twist her ankle to have a former I-1 girl help them out…cause that’s awesome….I guess. It did have some great music, but it doesn’t really compare ot iDOLM@STERS.

Wizard Barristers: Well this is strike three for Director Umetsu. He will have to pay me to watch anything he does from this point on. Kite was thug violence, Galilei Donna was so mishandled, and this was even more so, in spades. With a little world building throughout, and a bit more characterization it might have did something good.

    FK YA. HWYnorn!

    Great podcast guys.

    • Jrow says:

Silver Spoon: I’ll miss that gag with Yoshino excited for cheese and Nakajima getting very nervous. I’m gonna start reading the manga soon since I don’t wanna go long without Silver Spoon in my life.

Space Bros: Now that you know there won’t be anymore Space Bros eps (at least, hopefully, for a while) you should get on with watching that. I’d recommend to not binge watch or marathon the series; just watch an episode or 2 and then wait a few days before going back. Make it a “free time” or “extra time” anime. There’s even an implied future relationship with a significant age gap that’s handled really well much later in the series.

      • skylion says:

I’ll just miss how comfortable I felt with all of them. Any really good drama makes you feel like you are right there, and this show did that in such a commanding way. Arakawa is a master storyteller, equal to Rowling, King, and whomever you care to name.

Space Bros. I will take that advice to heart. I’m watching Mushishi right now in anticipation for the S2. I can’t watch more than two at a time, cause I feel like the Mushi are infecting me!

    • d-LaN says:

IIRC, the exact wording is tht the author is afraid that the Mahou Sensou LN might get “loss in translation” in the anime.

But that what you get when you crammed 7 volumes of material into 12 episodes. WTF ending of the year to me. (Maybe Samumenco/some other shows can outdo it?)

Still, the ED song (and to an extend the OP song) is pretty good as expected of Nano. Hope Madhouse fares better with NGNL and Mahouka in this season.

    • Highway says:

We’ve got a Nobunagun series review coming the end of this week. I liked the show enough to get that going. 🙂 Mainly a listing of what I liked. 😉 (with some help from others).

Wake Up Girls! wasn’t bad, it just never really committed to anything beyond slice of life. Heck, it barely made their lives more difficult than Natsuiro Kiseki did with their idol contest. And that hackneyed drama at the end was just risible. Maybe someday I’ll watch Idolm@ster.

Wizard Barristers: We recorded that before the final ep, and at least the animation seemed finished for the finale, but the story got so WTF?!?!?! I liked it overall, but that 11th episode was so embarrassing, and then the finale such a crazy mess, trying to cram everything in, it really fell flat at the end.

Silver Spoon was so nice. And Nourin ended pretty well, although it’s kind of ironic that the character I loved in the first episode was the one that ruined the later episodes for me. They totally flanderized Becky-sensei so much that she just got awful. I kind of wish Kouskaku has picked, because you know he’d pick Ringo. He was just too scared of Minori to pick Ringo, at least that’s how it felt, and that’s a terrible reason to leave a show open-ended like that.

  5. BlackBriar says:

Buddy Complex made an upset toward to end. Going from average mecha series to making me anticipate the next episode and with a nice cliffhanger as well. I had to laugh at Takahiro Sakurai’s character Bizon going crazy yelling “Connect with Hina!” and ranting over Aoba. I was thinking “Dude, chill. Take some meds”. Here’s hoping season 2 comes by quick.

Props to D-Frag, one of the best comedies Winter had to offer. Kenji Kazama is the tsukkomi king!! Every time he starts ranting, I find myself laughing to the point my eyes begin to tear up.

Hamatora was somewhat alright for a mystery/superpower series. The only problem that nearly ruined the whole thing was episode 5. It was so disturbing it made my skin crawl. That was strictly fujoshi bait. What’s ironic is the bad guy’s name “Moral” when he’s anything but.

Kill la Kill was so awesome that it’s practically impossible to describe its over the top brilliance in words. A glorious guilty pleasure and the show is aware of how absurd it is and that’s what adds to the fun. Nui Harime was no one to sniff at. She acts all cute but it’s easy to see she’d kill without batting an eye. Her personal theme made her presence even creepier and more terrifying than it already is. Too bad it had to go without being blogged until the very end. Best mother of year award (sarcasm) goes to: Ragyo Kiryuin. Only a sick, twisted person finds pleasure in continuously molesting their daughters.

Nobunagun is making the stereotype “military otaku” become more present in the anime world with Sio Ogura. Something most would agree that was left unfinished when Girls und Panzer ended. Sio is at her best when she’s ranting about military stuff or sporting a psychotic smile when she feels an adrenaline rush during her fights. There’s also a fair amount of yuri undertones, which is a welcome thing, between her interactions with her best friend Kaoru, suddenly getting kissed by Jess/Isaac Newton, being groped by Cyx and Cyx’s “admiration” for her comrade Lemon/Geronimo.

    • d-LaN says:

Apparently Takahiro Sakurai character in N: TF got the same treatment w/h Bizon. His characters just can’t catch a break frm having their lovers snatched by some1 else XD

But yeah, Bizon making a kingdom out of butthurt for Aoba taking Hina is a littttlleeee bit too much 😛

Kazama tsukkomi = best tsukkomi. There are quite a bit of times where his tsukkomi mirrored/close to mine ^_^

People dislike EP5 of Hamatora that bad huh >_>

      • Highway says:

I actually think that the tsukkomi in Love Lab was played better than in D-Frag. They moved the role around, and it was less over the top. D-Frag kind of got more like the early episodes of Kitakubu Katsudou, a show where they toned Natsuki’s tsukkomi way down, to the betterment of the series.

And yeah, Bizon watched his girl totally defect, and went bugnuts under the influence of whatever Doc-tor Hahn did to him to make him able to couple.

        • BlackBriar says:

And yeah, Bizon watched his girl totally defect, and went bugnuts under the influence of whatever Doc-tor Hahn did to him to make him able to couple.

If you look at things from another perspective, Bizon got seriously NTRed by Hina when she didn’t object to Aoba and Dio destroying his mech. She must have come to the conclusion that he was too far gone and gave up on him.

          • Highway says:

You don’t get NTR’d by the girl who you’re trying to get. You get dumped. Axed. Exed. And if she wants the other guy to kill you, that means you don’t have a chance.

    • MgMaster says:

The last fight in the final episode of Buddy Complex was like watching a rape scene with Bizon being the rapist,Hina the victim and Aoba the hero whom Hina “accepted” : )

I can’t possibly be the only one with a pervy enough mind to see it like that right? Right???…

      • BlackBriar says:

I didn’t even think of it like that. I was just waiting for Bizon to get his ass whupped, which happened and then some.

  6. MgMaster says:

I enjoyed D-Frag way more than I expected. I found nearly every character hilarious, from main to secondary to even lesser ones such as that dad & his son. Not much of an ending though but it’s not exactly a show you’d expect to be great so I’m content with it.

I took a liking to Nobunaga the Fool from the start even if I don’t know jack about Japan’s History. I started liking it less after a while since it seemed to go into mindless entertainment territory which isn’t too bad I guess, but it definitely limits it’s potential(at least,I know I’ll enjoy it much less). However,it doesn’t seem to be entirely mindless entertainment after all so even though we’re at it’s 12th episode I’m exactly how should I view it.

Buddy Complex…oh man,I see it as an average to decent mecha series but I found some parts of it hilarious, namely all the sexual innuendos. I’ll probably watch a 2nd season of it if it’s in a weak anime season but not in a good one.

Nourin was also a show which, like D-Frag,I enjoyed way more than I initially thought I would. Again I felt that every character had a purpose, their purpose here being to make us laugh, and it definitely worked on me. Also,Becky for president!
