Fosh and Jrow, thanks for all the mini-talks on this. I’m definitely up for another season! Loved the series throughout it’s running and really warmed up to all the characters.

I like it how Fosh mentions that the romance is there but it doesn’t take up much of your attention. You can call it nice subtlety because it’s placement was perfect. The whole triangle with Minori, Akatsuki and Shiroe was pretty surprising (for me Minori was like a middle schooler and the other two were high schoolers), due to age gap but well, this IS a game and supposedly age doesn’t matter. Still I liked how episodes after episodes were not spent on the pain of not getting the one you loved (this is one of the things that make me hate typical shoujos).

Btw, favourite yaoi ship: Soujirou and Shiroe (all those damn hints and sparkling), were golden in the last episode, while Crusty and Shiroe would work too just because of the MEGANE!

You are welcome Kyo! It was great to talk about this series weekly with Jrow and of course reading all the comments every week was always funny.

Yeah the romance was never in your face which was a really great way to do it instead of every other failed romance, but I loved how many pairings we got <3

LOL yeah Soujirou and Shiroe would make a great pairing~

This show had something to prove. The idea of being stuck in a game was not new, and we just had a major series based on the idea. Was another show like this even necessary?

And somehow it pulled it off. Log Horizon turned out to be a fun watch, and above all really made use of the “trapped in a game” concept in a fresh way.

    • Foshizzel says:

True that the whole stuck in a game is nothing new and yeah we really don’t need anymore, but I guess it must be really popular and it works for some series…

      It was very enjoyable!

      • HannoX says:

To say the whole stuck in a game is nothing new and we don’t really need anymore is wrong. That’s like saying, “Because we have The Iliad, War and Peace and The Red Badge of Courage about war we didn’t need All Quiet on the Western Front.” Each show deserves to be judged on its own merits and if it’s good, so what if that theme has been used before, even many times before?

        • d-LaN says:

This. Its all up to how the tropes/cliches are executed. Even shows with generic elements like STB can end up being enjoyable to watch and isn’t that one of the most important element of entertainment media?

    Favourite OTP, Marie X Naotsugu

  4. skylion says:

Wow Wow Wow Wow! Good talk, gentlemen. Nice was to stitch up all the points developed and all that stuff LOL.

Favorite Character: Minori is best LOLi and as Jrow says, she had a great arc, love that determination.

I never really shipped all that much, but I did like how they made romance a facet of the story, along with many other facets worth exploring; making food, for instance.

I don’t think they would ever change the pacing for the next series, and I hope they don’t.

See you for the next series of Log Horizon.

We on fire for JOJO! Hellzzzz YEAH!

    • Foshizzel says:

      Thanks Skylion!

Yep agreed out of all the main characters Minori did have the most character development from shy girl to confident leader.

Food is power in the Log Horizon universe~

      FK YA JOJO!

I think the real key to why this ‘trapped’ show worked is because everyone got over it pretty quickly. “Yeah, we’re here, so now what?” And they just got back to living their lives. Nobody wants to see people just be mopey about something like that for long. And maybe the reason they could get on with it is because there wasn’t that ‘if you do X, you’ll get out of here’ condition hanging around. As far as people know, they’re not ever getting out of there, so might as well make the best of it.

They didn’t explore all the classes, but they did put a limit on them (I think it was 13?), but there were tons of subclasses. Going from my WoW experience, if I had to pick one of the classes, I would probably end up something like Minori’s Kannagi class, which is almost exactly like the Disc priest I play in WoW, but I could also see something like Enchanter or Bard, assuming that the game is balanced and structured in such a way that those characters’ contributions are able to be recognized (a major problem with MMOs is that ‘support’ and buffing / debuffing classes are always undervalued by other jackass players because it’s hard to measure their output).

Log Horizon never really wowed you with brilliance, but was so consistently good and even throughout that it definitely ends up as a very good show. It was really a lot more like looking into the lives of people in an MMO, and I really liked the subplot throughout of the Adventurers and the People of the Land figuring out how to deal with each other.

  6. Riktol says:

    Akatsuki X Shiroe OTP.
The only better combination would be 4-way Shiroe X Akatsuki X Minori X Henrietta.

  7. zztop says:

I’m looking forward to more evil glasses myself. ^^

LN readers say some info regarding Nureha’s past was excised during her meeting with Shiroe, due to adult connotations. It implies that she engaged in compensated dating at best, prostitution at worst back in the real world.
Understandably, the info was removed given the family-friendly nature of NHK Educational, the channel on which Log Horizon airs.

    • Highway says:

That sounds like an unimportant detail to me. I would think the point of mentioning something like that is to merely reinforce her lack of sense of self-worth in the real world (since that’s about the only reason they mention something like that in stories). And to me, that feeling came across just fine in the show anyway.

All hail the Villain in Glasses!!!

  8. BlackBriar says:

I’d say it’s mostly sweet because the story’s not over. Not what I expected in the first few episodes but as a whole, Log Horizon did a great job taking a mainstream concept in a new direction. A pretty good suggestion of what could happen if people were trapped in a game. The series housed a lot of likable characters.

One of my favorite characters is Shiroe, the Villain in Glasses. Not only is he a good strategist but he’s considerate of others and creates and executes his plans for their benefit while barely asking anything in return for personal gain. All by making good use of the information he gathers. The guy is like the anti Izaya Orihara. Though they both enjoy picking their targets apart psychologically and knowing they have the advantage.

Second is Akatsuki, the serious, loyal and uptight assassin you can’t help but adore. Personally, she’s at her best when she’s vulnerable, remembering she’s a person with her own desires and futilely tries to deny them at times, especially when it clashes with her duty as her guild master’s subordinate and protector.

A little romance is alright, especially for Akatsuki and Minori. It was a minimal presence. It’s an okay interest as long as it doesn’t consume most of the story. I’m hardly a fan of a show that’s romance heavy. It just doesn’t do it for me.

If I play any game like this or any of the Final Fantasy installments, I try to balance my player between power, speed, defense and magic. A kind of equilibrium should be maintained because if one side outdoes the other, it could lead to a downfall.

A second season set a year after the first started airing. I recently recall Magi using that trick. Anyway, excitement will be building until then. Fall 2014 is shaping up to be awesome since Fate/Stay Night and Psycho-Pass 2 are already confirmed to join alongside it. Here’s hoping 6 months will fly by like nothing. Thanks for the mini talks Jrow and Fosh!

Goodbye Database! We will miss you.

I am def not missing Database 😛

And sadly for some reason I’m more interested in the LH Overseas spin off web novel series compare to the main series. (I still need that motivation to finish it) Not saying that this series is bad, just that it didn’t caught me enough to continue watching it weekly. Will try to fin it be4 S2 though.
