First impressions – Wizard Barristers: Benmashi Cecil

Magical courtrooms are amazing~

Finally Wizard Barristers is out! I swear after seeing the trailers I was blown away by the eye popping visuals and of all the studios this is done by Arms who brought us Hagure Yuusha no Estetica, Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Bride, Maoyuu Maou Yuusha and Queens Blade? Yeaaah there is only one series on that list that was even entertaining…

No pantsu shot for you~

Whenever there is a crime committed in any anime series we never really get to see what happens after the criminals are brought into custody minus Psycho Pass which skips the courtroom all stuff all together with their crazy Dominators, but in the case of Wizard Barristers we actually get to follow a team of wizard defendants that want to protect the “criminal” in question; however I know that Wizard Barristers is not the first courtroom themed anime series because if you saw Danganronpa you might as well consider that a court room themed anime as well! Damn now I really want a Index/Railgun spinoff anime that follows Judgment and the Academy City criminal system minus some of the more known characters.

So what happened with this first episode? I guess this was more of an introduction to the world of Wizard Barristers where humans and magicians co-exist in the same world along; however I can tell a lot of humans do not like wizards in general so we have some obvious discrimination going on! That said the main focus appears to be Cecil taking on the role of a “Benmashi” which is technically a lawyer? Also it appears that Cecil’s mom or someone she knows is locked up in jail? I guess there is some huge back story we will learn eventually and speaking of Cecil I loved watching her powers at work to create that giant mecha.  So what did you enjoy about the first episode? Personally I just loved seeing every magic power animated like that short action scene at the start and of course the perverted frog familiar! He was so damn funny.

Extra magical fun

End thoughts

Whoa that was some fantastic animation for the first episode of Wizard Barristers but of course with most of the premiere episodes the artwork is usually super fantastic, but I just wonder how long this studio can keep that level of animation quality going? I mean either way I am completely sold for watching more of this! Besides all of that I found the characters to be interesting and the various magical powers shown in the opening has me so excited!

About

Is huge anime fan from Florida! who loves to watch anime and also enjoys drawing and collecting pictures, my favorite genre of anime has to be Mecha, there is just something awesome about giant robots beating the crap out of each other! Other than that type of show, I love a good comedy or action series :D

The benmashi are the only professionals in Japan allowed to give legal advice, and argue cases before court. I find it odd they use barrister in the title, which in many Commonwealth Nations (UK and it’s former colonies, etc) the barrister is the one that can only argue in court, and an attorney can only advise the barrister and give legal advice and documentation stuff out of court. I think both work under the title, lawyer.

That aside, we have a neat little CSI Law and Order Arcana style show going on. It has a great mix of characters, and ARMS has done superb on the animation.

I’m a bit wary of Umetsu. I did not care for the thuggery of his earlier works, and Galilei Donna was such derp. I hope he can come out strong with this one.

Ooooh wow I had no idea! I learned something haha

Yeah I like all the characters so far for this even though their choice in clothing is all over the place, but it works and hell ya ARMS is doing good! I am shocked to actually be saying that considering all the crap they have made over the years…

i liked a lot of this first episode, it’s just so different, it brings a new air to magic…not to mention that the courtroom is pretty awesome, it’s very exciting too…i admit i gaped after that magic at the end, i mean magical seal of the doom! did you see what she summoned with that small seal? besides, she used magic…while driving!

    • Foshizzel says:

Good to know! It was a fun first episode in terms of a super magic series I am curious to see where things end up with Cecil and that mysterious woman in jail and yeah I noticed she used her magic while driving hahah

Wizzards don’t need barristers. They should just duke it out with all the magic at their disposal! The last time a group of wizzards did some judgementing it caused one of their number to turn to the Dark Side(tm).

    • AllenAndArth says:

personally i like the dark side…they have cookies

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

The Dark Side(tm) has much cookies… Join us! Pros: Choke, Lightning, cool Red-bladed weapons and no stuff-nagging Council!

Cons: Ungrateful apprentices! (working on this though – will deploy much stricter screening processes and subject them to the Pros if they fail)

      • BlackBriar says:

Know the power of the Dark Side.

    • Foshizzel says:

I will go anywhere for some free cookies~

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

        Then Cerebrum calls you.

        • BlackBriar says:

Hey! If it’s him then it’s a deal that will come back to bite anyone who takes it. I’ve learned more than enough after seeing how he manipulated his victims into becoming Daemonias.

The show was a lot better than I thought. The cops are dumbasses, tho. They need to be better about who they’re arresting. If they just show up and arrest whoever’s left around, don’t they pretty much always get the non-bad guys?

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah it was a surprise for me as well I figured it would have been heavy on the fanservice with little to no actual story and yeah the cops are dumb I can agree there.

    • BlackBriar says:

The cops are most likely lazy and will reach for anyone within their range, innocent or not, especially if they’re a wizard. That’s how I felt watching this episode. They only want to do what’s convenient for them.

    • akagami says:

They have really poor weaponry though. After all, they only managed to arrest the first guy because she flicked a cig butt at him.

I mean, I would totally go arrest the youjo as well.

      Your choice!
      a) Cute youjo breaking traffic law; or
      b) Masked wizard who can shoot bullets from his hands robbing a bank

      Your weapon!
      a) Standard issue police pistol
      b) Your fist

      Your armor!
      a) Light blue dress shirt
      b) Sleeveless light armor vest

  5. BlackBriar says:

That was an amazing first episode and the animation was awesome. Much better than I expected along with the fact the character design are different from the norm other animes use.

Considering how the premise shows, having wizards represented by lawyers is a good thing because they’re the targets of intense discrimination. Like how the guy visiting the bank is treated as a suspect when instead saved someone’s life, even if he had to use deadly force. That really pissed me off. Even among humans, a handful are considered innocent until proven guilty and I’m sure the lady Cecil visited is her mother and was unjustly imprisoned.

I can tell for now that detective woman is going to be a source of hate for her prejudiced and bias views on wizards and that other new recruit for being a stuck up snob.

The anticipation to see how powerful Cecil is overwhelming, especially when she was unimpressed with the size of her golem because there wasn’t enough metal and the thing was already massive in my opinion.
