Kakumeiki Valvrave – 24 [END]

valvrave (1)

Time for the final episode!

It seems liked everyone wanted Akira to kill off Q-vier, but after watching this episode you might be surprised to learn who actually takes him out; however it appears we have reached the final episode of Valvrave and I know ending it with twenty-four episodes seems very strange.

See you later space vampires

valvrave (5)valvrave (6)

This was a touching scene and damn I feel bad for L-elf.

valvrave (8)

Cain’s Valvrave was awesome!

With the Magus being exposed to the entire universe for being immortal monsters you would think everyone would turn on them right? NOPE! Their followers were so quick to jump on that that reveal calling it fake, but that did not last long because that ARUS leader turned traitor and sold the Magus out which made me laugh. We also learned through Cain’s chat with Haruto that the history of the Magus goes far back as biblical times and just about every supernatural myth can be tied back to the Magus and what about the mystery surrounding Pru and Pino? Apparently they were imprisoned and used as a power source for the Valvraves which I kind of saw coming. So what of Haruto, L-elf, Saki and Shoko? Just about all of those key characters suffered a lot in this final episode but I feel for L-elf who lost Haruto after he died from memory loss and yes as much as I hated on Haruto week after week it was still sad to see him die, but I think we always knew he was going to die eventually. Did anyone else catch that line from Saki this week? She basically wanted Haruto to lose his memories of Shoko so she could swoop in and take him away from her? I was like WHOA Saki what are you even saying? I mean sure it was sneaky and underhanded, but I will admit I cheered her on because I really do not like Shoko!

So we should talk about the biggest mysteries of the final episode as in what the hell is going on in the after credits future scenes? Aside from Takahi and Satomi getting married of course! I just want to know why L-elf is still around and why is Shoko alive and why did she became the new red Valvrave pilot and what about that mysterious child we keep seeing? Who are his parents?! Are they saying that Shoko and L-elf got together or is that mini L-elf just a random clone? I mean I still think that the Valvrave pilots are unable to have children because technically they died and last I checked dead things can’t really have offspring, but I know that whole subject is up in the air thanks to vampire lore or or some made up stuff! That said we are dealing with anime and let us not forget Sunrise loves to mess around with anime science so anything is possible. I have to ask was anyone else laughing their asses off when those two random one aliens arrived and pointed their weapons at Shoko? I swear I found her line about becoming friends with them kind of hilarious.

In the end Valvrave was a hit and miss show with tons and tons of mecha fans and not to mention all the damn plot holes in the series and yes I admit I was angry watching Cain who has more combat experience than any other character getting basically one shot! WOW SERIOUSLY HOW? Sadly the power of friendship allows you to own any villain, but after watching weeks of Valvrave I feel we did not get any kind of payoff because we are still left with a ton of questions which makes me hope we get some kind of OVA or movie to explain a few things! I guess we have to wait for the light novel to get translated; however I still managed to have fun watching and talking to everyone about this oddball mecha series.

Extra Valvrave fun

Props to Sunrise for animating some of the best mecha battles since Gundam Unicorn!

Please tell me there are no other shows out there where characters die for memory loss…

The best part about a trainwreck is the wild ride, the worst is when it comes to an end. We didn’t even get the derp of Yaya and Raishin coming in bad CGI to save the day.

At least it was telegraphed. All the right people bought it just like they should have.

I don’t know if another two cour show is out there. I’d probably follow it, but I think a film would be best to give us a bit more after story.

Wild train wreck. I might just miss that part.

I’ll have to remember these words whenever I watch another show like this and keep repeating them every single episode.

    • Foshizzel says:

Wild trainwreck indeed but what a ride! It was a blast and I will be sad to see it go, but at least we have the mechs of winter and spring to look forward too~

  2. zztop says:

In retrospect, there is finality in regards to the show’s main points of unveiling the truth of the world and how the Empire originated from the Module.

More elaboration on the future world and the Empire’s workings would have made the ending more complete, I think.

At least no one can say the writers won’t have any material left for any future sequels.

    • Foshizzel says:

I feel the same way zztop! We really need something extra to explain some of the holes in Valvrave…

      • zztop says:

True, I still can’t believe they didn’t give finality to H-9’s death other than ‘he died’.

I thought he’d come back somehow.

        • BlackBriar says:

It was the same thing in Psycho-Pass with Kagari who, due to the story, had to die because he saw something he shouldn’t and didn’t give the viewers any kind of closure.

      • d-LaN says:

All we can do is wait for the LN adaptation or the spin off mangas/LN.

  3. zztop says:

I think the TM Revolution x Nana Mizuki openings (esp. Kakumei Dualism) were the best J-pop songs to be associated with Valvrave, and even I came to this show because of the songs.

The unfolding conspiracy and Katsura Hoshino’s art were added bonuses, and I hope Hoshino gets more commissions for her designs to be used in anime.
(considering all she has is D-Gray Man and misc one-shot manga).

    • Foshizzel says:

TM Revolution ftw! I loved both openings~

Yeaaah I completely forgot the character designs for Valvrave were done by the D-Gray Man designer ahaha

What’s everyone’s take on how the new Valvrave activation question ‘Do you believe in humanity?’ has relative to the show’s events, and how it contrasts with the old ‘Do you resign your humanity?’ question.

    • Irenesharda says:

I actually didn’t think that question made much sense. The empire’s entire basis is about coexistence. Why should humans be more important here? Also, considering the epilogue implies that the kids went and formed the empire, leaving the earth and the rest of humanity to their wars and destruction, and of course, the Magius, who Lieselotte wanted to share in this new world, to be slaughtered along with all the other humans killed in the world’s largest witch hunt, what exactly is important to them again? Humanity or Coexistence?

      • zztop says:

I asked this question at another site, and their reply was:

‘…it matches very well with Pino’s, and maybe even Prue’s, new outlook. There was a time the Magius were afraid of trusting Humans, but Pino saw first-hand from Haruto and his experiences how not all humans are alike; that some of them are nice people and are willing to accept others regardless of who they are. That brings us to this new question: “Do you believe in humanity?” Pino can only entrust this amazing power of a “holy spirit” to those who hold the same ideals that Haruto poured his life into.’

        http://hakotoshokan.wordpress.com/2013/12/27/anime-review-kakumeki-valvrave-24-final/#comments

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah I have no idea what to actually think about for that! I guess if you believe in humans you gain immortality without losing your memories since Pru and Pino are now together? Whatever it is I wish we got some real answers…

      • BlackBriar says:

That could be possible. I mean, they’ve had over 200 years to physically improve themselves to guard against any weaknesses.

    • BlackBriar says:

There’s nothing definite to describe it but I can’t help feeling it’s a catch like the previous activation question.

  5. BlackBriar says:

For a finale, there was a lot of death and tragedy and basically, other than L-Elf, A-drei is left alone since all of his other friends have died. *sigh* I didn’t want it to happen but I knew something bad would happen to Haruto once it meant taking on Cain with all out force. He may have been whiny at first but he was alright.

The Magius had the betrayal from the ARUS president coming (But he also deserves an equal lashing, in my opinion), especially what they did to Lieselotte and everyone else but my dislike of them lessened a bit hearing Cain’s story. But they’d gain more sympathy if they didn’t resort to the methods they used, especially sacrificing a bunch of innocent students to keep their cover.

So I was right in my assumption that Saki and Akira would be the only surviving Valvrave pilots but at least they helped make Haruto and L-Elf’s ambition come true. I hope this isn’t a troll because the conclusion felt open ended.

why is Shoko alive and why did she became the new red Valvrave pilot

I guess she wanted to carry on hers and Haruto’s ambition for peace and that becoming the new red Valvrave pilot was the closest she’ll ever get to him, especially after learning his secret. I wish he was still alive to be with her, though.

Overall, Valvrave was one hell of a pleasant train wreck. If Metanorn had a “Best Train wreck” category, I’d nominate it as number 1. I really liked this series because not only was it alright for a mecha series, it made a huge surprise by adding similarities of vampire lore in the story (If you consider their methods for eating and survival, they basically are vampires, feeding off humans for runes instead of blood). You couldn’t imagine how shocked I was. It took some time for me to accept that part. It’s unlikely that I’ll easily enjoy another mecha series that isn’t like this one. And personally, another 24 episode series would do more justice to the story instead of a movie for any remaining questions.

    • Irenesharda says:

LOL, BB, it’s kind of funny but how you felt about the Shiki in, well…Shiki, is how I felt about the Magius here. I actually like them much better than the humans or even the kamitsuki at the end of this. I don’t know why, perhaps it’s just the way they were presented in comparison to the Shiki that makes me sympathize with them more.

I for some reason put the Magius at a different standard than I would humans. Yes, the Magius feed on humans and they need human bodies to survive…for now. Magius need runes, not particularly human ones, just runes enough to feed themselves and their people. I cannot fault a people for trying to survive, no more than I can fault humans for getting their nutrients from other living things. The Magius have survived for as long as they have, before they came to Earth on runes, the kamitsuki need runes as well, there has to be another more viable source to get runes from than humans. If the kamitsuki and Magius worked together they might have been able to get access to whatever this was that provided runes in order to feed both peoples.

And to me, the humans are a bigger threat to humanity than the Magius. The Magius were given an allotment of humans by their own governments, they didn’t seek them out nor did they hunt them down, the governments sold their own people out. The humans then decided to not only betray the Magius they had already made deals with and try to hunt them down, and in the process created a witchhunt that killed way more humans than it did Magius, and this says nothing about the war that’s been going on for years before this, and goes on for years afterward, that the Magius had no part of, that is also destroying humanity. So….in the long run, who is doing the worse damage, the humans or the Magius?

If Cain and Haruto had decided to stop fighting and instead talked things out, I think it might have turned out better for both parties. The Magius and the kamitsuki wanted the same thing a place of safety for their people to live. I think the Magius could have made an alliance with kids and the two could have helped each other in the forming of this nation. Haruto’s charge against the Magius was that they had decided to build a wall separating them away from the humans and had stopped trying for coexistence when the going went tough. However, for as long as the Magius have been living I think that they have become embittered and for good reason. So how about instead of leaving them to the wolves for trying to protect themselves, why not ask them to join your empire that is supposedly all about coexistence? I’m sure they know a lot more about the galaxy and advanced technology than you.

I just don’t think the slaughter of her marooned people was what Lieselotte had in mind when she wanted to create this “safe haven”…

      • BlackBriar says:

LOL. That is strange. It’s like looking in a mirror. I’m sympathetic towards the Shiki and you with the Magius. At least we have this in common: Us vampire fans aren’t interested in siding with the humans and their views. We’d much rather support the “predatory species” and I don’t feel any shame in doing so.

        • Irenesharda says:

What’s equally funny and weird is that, as a fan of MLP (I’m not exactly a “brony” since I’m a girl, but whatever…) and the episode they had this week had this exact same issue, albeit kiddie-fied, dealing with vampires (bats this time) and between destroying them for doing what they need to do to survive, or learning to co-exist with them.
They of course ruled in favor of coexistence, and I just thought it so weird after having finished Valvrave, and the kiddie show ended up learning the message of coexistence better than the more-adult anime. LOL 😛

          • Foshizzel says:

LOL that sounds hilarious but I can’t really laugh at a plot like that after all I watch a lot of PreCure…

          • BlackBriar says:

It’s all about the setting and how you feel in the situation. If I were in the Trinity Blood world, I’d go for co-existence because I’d want to be friends with Ion and Astharoshe but if I were in the Shiki world instead, I’d pull a Seishin Muroi, side with the vampires and wouldn’t care that the village was being overrun. So with saying that, if the Magius students were to suddenly oppose humanity, I’d support them without hesitation.

            • Foshizzel says:

Reminds me of True Blood that is another world where humans and vampires co-exist because scientists in that series have developed some artificial blood so the vampires can drink that instead of feeding off the humans, but of course you have older vampires who don’t believe in such a system and attack humans anyway…

            • Irenesharda says:

I like Trinity Blood world too, and I enjoyed the idea of everyone kind of having their own country, Also, I enjoyed the idea of the Krusniks and how there were being above vampires.

What was so weird though was that a few years after seeing TB, I watched Trigun and realized it was the exact same story except in the Wild West and not with vampires. It had the same coexistence problem as well.

In fact what is it will the theme of coexistence and mecha this year? Valvrave, Gargantia, and Majestic Prince all had to deal with coexistence of humans and aliens, and none of three actually really handled it well.

Valvrave played with the idea but then everything fell apart in the end by simply allowing humanity to genocide the aliens. MJP decided despite their Lacus clone princess to just annihilate the aliens by destroying their wormhole and thus their access to food and supplies, and thus having them die by slow death and starvation. Gargantia got the closest to it, but even their ending felt contrived and did nothing to solve the alien/human war that still continues to rage.

              Interesting coincidence…

      • zztop says:

One way to see it is that maybe a few (unshown) Magius perhaps did choose to go off with the Module students to space unknown.

However, the majority Magius, unwilling to let go of their power and status, stubbornly choose to stay behind, confident they could ride out the tide.
        Unfortunately that backfired on them.

        • Irenesharda says:

I wish I could believe that, however, I doubt the Magius really cared that much for human status, especially since their number one priority was survival. Also the way Akira described it, it just seemed like they all ended up dying.

I hope not though, since it seems kind of hypocritical that they let the humans slaughter the Magius, but they make alliances with other random aliens? -_-

          • Foshizzel says:

Yeah I don’t like the idea of aliens being introduced right now! Seriously that seems to be something you think they would do for a movie plot, but I don’t even know if there is enough material to do such a thing.

            • BlackBriar says:

In a way, that shouldn’t be a problem since the Magius themselves are aliens to begin with.

            • Foshizzel says:

Yeah I mean less human looking aliens because the ones at the end were full blown out of this world aliens.

  6. HannoX says:

There were too many questions left unanswered for the end to be truly satisfying. But that was likely done by design to leave room for a movie or another series. While I voted for a movie, personally I’d prefer a 12 episode season. I’m not really sure I’d stick it out for another 24 episodes.

Overall I found it enjoyable, but man, was it a mess! The massacre of the students wasn’t as shocking as it was no doubt meant to be because we’d already had–was it one or more?–massacres of unarmed civilians before that. Writers, repetition dulls the shock value for the audience. And the same with Haruto’s death. That was telegraphed as far back as Marie’s death and his starting to lose his memories. His death had no impact on me because I could see it coming, but even more because I hated his character. Now I don’t have to worry about seeing him in a sequel if there is one.

    • zztop says:

Definitely overambition here. So many plotlines from Season 1, not enough episodes in Season 2 to answer them.

    • Foshizzel says:

A movie would be wonderful if it actually happens.

I agree overall Valvrave is an enjoyable series but I probably would not recommend it to anyone who wants to get into mecha because it was a total mess especially with the second half.

      • d-LaN says:

Ironically, VVV is the biggest reason tht got me into mecha genre lol. W/out VVV, I won’t even give MJP and eventually GBF a chance ^_^

        • Foshizzel says:

Awww MJP is fantastic I highly recommend that series! I can understand GBF because its mostly little kids fighting battles with model kids but if you look past that the battle moments are awesome.

  7. MgMaster says:

I barely ever watched crazy shows like this and I will remember Valvrare being the one that made me realize how much fun they can be.I started liking season 1 more & more with each passing episode and the 2nd season was honestly my most anticipated show of fall(that was also because nothing else caught my eye from previews back then too though).

The 2nd season of Valvrare took a much more serious & darker aproach though which I personally really enjoyed. It didn’t take me too long to accept this more serious version of the crazy Valvrare I knew because I felt the 1st season was already going down that path. This has actually been my 2nd favorite show of fall, until this ending.I’ll be honest here: at some points in this season I forgot that Valvrare was a show where you shouldn’t ask too many questions and just enjoy the ride but this is most likely the case with a lot of viewers. My inexperience with crazy shows such as this still showed off though and as a result,I ended up being not just disappointed but also a bit angry at this ending.

In the end,I can’t say I didn’t have lots of fun watching Valvrare but MEEEEEHHHHH!I’ll need a bit to get over this lackluster ending.Still,it was a damn fun ride,Sunrise. From now on I’ll be watching more of these types of shows but I’ve learned my lesson not to expect much in the long run.

    • Foshizzel says:

Valvrave is CRAZY and interesting but this final episode failed to do anything impressive for me sadly and yeah the second half of Valvrave was death and gloom with us playing the game of “Who is going to die” every episode.

  8. zztop says:

And thus did L-11 become Emperor Mikhail I of the new Galactic Empire…

I’m quite certain the little Prince is his direct descendant based on his hair design.

Although head writer Okouchi obvously wants to avoid the question, twittering ‘The little Prince’s identity is up to your imagination , and I won’t answer it. Please remember this series’.

  9. Irenesharda says:

Now when I first saw this in raw, I was pretty pissed over it. There was so many problems here, so many open, unanswered questions and plot holes, such as when the Magius were all slaughtered by GUNS?! Also, when Haruto somehow defeated Cain simply by will power. However….now that I’ve taken the time to watch this again, and this time with subs. I have to say that–I’m really glad I did.

This was much better the second time around. After getting to understand everything I can see that this was actually a pretty bittersweet ending then first presented.

So, not only were the Magius not the bad guys here, they had actually wanted coexistence in the first place but were tortured, hunted, and killed every time they tried. I can understand why they acted the way they did. Also, Cain actually comes off as more anti-hero than villain in the end. He only wanted to keep his people safe. He only wants to return his people to the peace they once had. And interestingly, the people they they got to feed off of, was given to them by the human governments themselves! So, really, this was just a big mess of conspiracies with plenty of blame to go around.

I’m really ashamed of humanity here, and I would have answered “no” to the new question of “Do you believe in humanity?”. No country was the good guy here, and could Haruto and Cain have talked things out rather than fight? Both of them wanted peace, but Cain was older and knew what it felt like to be scorned and hunted, a feeling Haruto was new to. I actually disapprove with Haruto just saying “I can’t lose to you!” instead of asking to figure out their differences.

And what ends up happening is that the Earth is tossed into chaos, war breaks out everywhere, and there is a complete witch hunt where everyone both guilty and innocent are hunted down and killed. I actually feel bad for the Magius more than any of the humans. All they wanted was to live in peace and tried their darndest to protect themselves, but even they were wiped out by the humans who are against all “monsters”.

The students decide to leave humanity to their wars and hatred and find a place to call their own. They start the new empire with Michael/L-elf as their first emperor. Satomi and Takahi marry and they live a happy life simply protecting themselves from their enemies whether human or alien. Shoko takes up Haruto’s old spot as pilot and she has learned from her ways, with a nice timely line from Rion. Years into the future, Satomi, Saki, and Akira are telling this story to the young prince that is a descendant of L-elf.

I have to say, this ending wasn’t as bad as watching it the first time around, and understanding what was said really helps. Yes there are still a ton of plot holes and questions that never got answered, but it was a good time. The fight was awesome and VVV2 despite it’s short life, didn’t disappoint. In all honesty, despite, Haruto’s grand sacrifice and all, he really did sound a lot like a rehash of Marie and Marie unfortunately did it better. Cain actually stole the spotlight here. He was grand, noble, loyal to his people and his friends, had a pretty good reason for why he’s done the things he’s done, and had a much better death scene. The scenes where he was grading everyone on performance was funny, but it was sweet when he was proud of X-eins for his willingness to sacrifice himself for trying to avenge his friend. Cain valued loyalty and friendship above all, and it showed when not only did he risk his life to honor his promise to Prue to save Pino, when he could have just as easily destroyed VVV1 right away. And of course in the end, he give up the last of his power to save Prue’s life, showing how much of friends they were to each other. Cain had one of the best death scenes in the entire series.

Q-vier had one of the saddest death of all this episode, as he really took to heart they promise they made when they killed F-6. And the fact the A-drei didn’t want to kill him, and yet wasn’t aware the little guy couldn’t block, and in ended up killing him by accident. To make it worse, Q-vier was actually happy about it, and always looked up to A-drei as the best and thought he was so cool. I think I actually teared up.

The end with Haruto and L-elf was sweet too, as Haruto sits there dying drained of all his runes, and L-elf struggles to explain the nature of the relationship between the two of them. Comrades and teammates is something he knows, but “friends” is something altogether different. And while I’m not really sure the he and Haruto were every really “friends” and not simply “weapon and wielder” until perhaps a couple of episodes ago, the two saying goodbye without really saying it was rather nice.

So, what can I say? There’s definitely room for improvement, but they actually did a pretty good job with what they could do? Should they have a sequel series? Absolutely, they definitely could do it. However, they would need a totally new cast, and they could explain the many plotholes including the G7, Episode 10, and the future war with the humans. It looks like they have met many other aliens that they have now begun classifying them all. So, I can see there this taking off into a sequel or even a franchise.

This was a fun ride and I will be getting this series on DVD after all. I give this episode an 8/10 and the series a 9/10. It made a lot of mistakes and had a bunch of plot holes but I’ve enjoyed myself thoroughly anyway.

See you guys in the next mecha series!

    • Foshizzel says:

There was so many problems here, so many open, unanswered questions and plot holes

True that I have to agree there are tons of holes throughout this series…

Cain actually comes off as more anti-hero than villain in the end

      Yes! That is SOOOO TRUE!

Q-vier had one of the saddest death of all this episode

Hmmmm I could see that I guess I was just mad that he killed Yamada so quickly, but I suppose you could argue the fact that he was just following orders and yeah he did for the most part.

See you guys in the next mecha series!

Yeah! I look forward to your comments on Nobunaga the Fool and our first impression post for Buddy Complex.

  10. zztop says:

I suppose we could always wait for a Gintama parody of Valvrave…

    ‘It’s not Magius, it’s Katsura!!’

  11. Di Gi Kazune says:

NO MORE PLEASE MAKE IT STOP!

Heh. That was an amusing option. Just read the wikientry for curiousity and discovered why this show really didn’t incite the interest here.

It is Gundam and its sociopolitical commentary repackaged. Seriously, from the bits gathered here and there, there were hints of Gundam 00000000 (did I put enough zeros?)

  12. Kyokai says:

S1 was better than S2, which was basically more crying and people dying everywhere. Haruto’s death flag has been waving since season one so that wasn’t much of a surprise but still, a lot was mismanaged and by the end, it wasn’t a great series as beginning. Sunrise makes good mecha but for long running series, they do go too crazy, just how Code Geass S1 > S2.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah the first half was hilarious and off the wall and the second half was full of sadness and death, but yeah I have to agree sunrise makes great running mecha and if they have the chance they will go CRAZY with it! Yeah it was very Geass indeed.

    • Irenesharda says:

Actually I thought the second season was better, sans the ending. I liked the more somber, mature atmosphere in comparison with the school hi-jinks of before.

      • Foshizzel says:

Ahhh yeah I kind of liked a mix of both because I don’t really mind all the character deaths even though I was annoyed how Marie went out but it is nice to see even the immortal characters get killed off which was completely shocking to me.

That said I do love a little bit of comedy in my mecha shows and that is probably why I loved MJP because it did that quite well along with some serious moments thrown in.

Yeah, I liked the second half better because it had a darker tone not only with the war and the Valvrave pilots not knowing what they are but how dangerous things would get if their secrets ever got out.

Given that I finished the first season and it was growing on me, while I’ve quit S2 because I just got bored and annoyed at it, I’m in the S1 >>> S2 camp as well.

Gimme an OVA/movie/manga/S3 to answer all the question plz. It really turn out to be VVV: The C*cktease isn’t it?

My Haruto x L-11 ship T_T Oh well, at least Satomi x Takahi happened.

Cain should def let her hair down more often. Looks better that way IMO XD

@Fosh All I get out of the Shoko scene in the end is WHUT lol.

  14. AnneRose says:

Anyone believing Akira could take down Q-vier was delusional. The Valvrave pilots were always mediocre and had no training who relied their battles on surprise element, L-Elf planning or superiority of machines: those three are out here. Q-vier would have murdered Akira with the same ease he killed Thunder. There’s a reason why not even Haruto could match Cain and needed X-eins and L-Elf to defeat him. The Dorssians boys were called Perfection Army. Short of one of their own or Cain, no one would have defeated them which is what happened with X-eins, Q-vier and H-neun. If X-eins’ robot was on par with Valvrave 2, Cain would have also died in his suicidal attack.

    • Foshizzel says:

I know right? Akira lacks the combat experience and she would probably get owned in one shot against Q-vier! Still I am happy someone killed him off because DAMN he made me so mad.

True if you think about it L-elf was the one that beat Cain in the end, but I still think its cheesy to have Haruto body jack L-elf to gain his combat experience LOL

RIP X-eins you were such a fun character T_______T

I am really intrigued on who’s child was the little boy with silver hair like L-elf/A-Drei. Is it the child of Saki and Haruto? because she was raped once by Haruto? 0r child of Saki and A-drei?remember that episode when the child was called the prince?and A-Drei s a prince.
