First Impressions – Log Horizon

Game on!

I know what everyone is thinking! Ewwww another Sword Art Online rip off series! I mean sure the whole trapped in another world or video game story has been done over and over again, but I have a feeling that Log Horizon will be about a team of fighters that work together instead of one overpowered guy that can solo the entire game! At least I hope so…

I love these characters!

Like I said at the start yes this is another lame ass trapped in a game world story, but for some strange reason I don’t really feel at there is a “threat” right now because it appeared that the main focus of the first episode was spend on the character interaction and the random comedic moments, like the back and forth chats between Shiroe, Naotsugu, Akatsuki and those two random chicks at the guild hall. That said I don’t think it will be as hilarious as Watamote or Love Lab from the previous season but it still managed to keep things refreshing and very entertaining. So what is the story really going to follow? I suppose we will discover the truth soon along with the real threat element involving the possibility of character deaths or will Log Horizon stay away from all of that? Just kidding I fully expect to see some side characters dying or even some main characters. Besides that I like the character designs by Mariko Ito who worked on Heartcatch Precure, Fairy Tail, Mouretsu Pirates, Death Note, AKB0048 and random episodes of Symphogear. That is an impressive list and I can’t forget to mention my favorite music dude Yasuharu Takanashi who worked on Fantasista doll last season! I love his talent to create some of the best fighting themes in anime and speaking of music? The OP was amazing! I think it might be my favorite so far.

Extra MMORPG fun!

End thoughts

Well damn that was a very entertaining first episode! I just hope they are able to maintain the level of comedy even though I honestly think that was just their cleaver way to draw people into the first episode or will things continue that way for the next twenty four episodes? Yes this series is going to have twenty something episodes; however I still feel the drama could come out of nowhere with some random character deaths. As it stands Akatsuki voiced by Emiri Kato aka Mayoi Hachikuji and Naotsugu my favorite characters so far and speaking of Akatsuki for a moment, does anyone else feel that we might see some romance developing between her and Shiroe later on in the series? I am only saying that because the ending video kind of shows something between them, but of course that could just be the producers wanting fans to ship them together. So what did you think of this episode and are you going to keep up with it? I suppose we need more episodes before we decide that.

About

Is huge anime fan from Florida! who loves to watch anime and also enjoys drawing and collecting pictures, my favorite genre of anime has to be Mecha, there is just something awesome about giant robots beating the crap out of each other! I was ready to dismiss this show as complete crap. But I’m kinda hooked by few things. Yes, Akatsuki is totally made of win. Did anyone thing I would not love this character. What is up with that magic potion to turn a guy into a LOLi? Metaphor much?

But seriously, she is totally badass from the ground up.

I really liked the slow burn they have built up to the whole “I can’t log out” surprise. Not to mention the “hey don’t treat this like a GUI MMORPG, just be awesome and you’ll do pretty good”

Again, I was ready to dismiss it, But the second episode has to have gyphons. Skylion must obey the gryphons. Thanks Mondajaii.

When I saw it on the original chart for the fall season I rolled my eyes because SAO kind of ruined the whole trapped in a video game story for me and Accel World was just a kid playing a game, so yeah I really hope Log Horizon does something NEW.

Loli potion scene was hilarious xD

We have LoLi ninjas and epic gryphons! What more could we ask for? Also 24 episodes makes me really excited to see where the story goes! I hope we don’t have to deal with a lot of lame drama though, but whatever works.

I thought this episode was pretty innocuous, but it was fun. The main trio looks like they could have some potential for good chemistry–I hope the show will lean more toward having them get a kick out of their situation rather than turning too serious business about it. The lead boy and girl are both rather adorable, at least, so I’ll be watching the next ep or two to see where things go.

    • Foshizzel says:

The main trio looks like they could have some potential for good chemistry

      Agreed!

I think you are right about them not taking it serious right now and same I can’t wait to see where the story goes next time! I just want this to be a somewhat happy series instead of a DRAAAMAA series with people dying every week…

      • d-LaN says:

The only named character that died in Aincrad is Diabel, Sachi, The Rider lookalike, That crazy PK guy, Kayaba and one character frm a SS that wasn’t adapted…..

        • Foshizzel says:

Yeah and those deaths don’t really do a whole lot for me minus Sachi’s death that hit Kirito hard, but with this series I don’t really feel the threat at the moment even though I think it will be revealed soon? If anything this is more .hack\\SIGN than SAO right now.

  3. Highway says:

This show seems like a much better take on ‘stuck in a game’ than SAO was. It seems more focused on “Well, this is what we’ve got, let’s see what we have to do.” A lot less angst and moaning about it, and a lot less maliciousness in motivations so far.

If it can keep the level it’s at, it will be a successful show, far more than SAO.

    • Foshizzel says:

Oh god yes less crying and people freaking out! I mean besides the background characters of course, but anyway I like the fact they are staying calm about it and yeah I got the feeling of it being an adventure instead of some evil plot to kill people.

I certainly hope it beats the hell out of SAO!

  4. BlackBriar says:

I went in this show on the notion that it might be like Sword Art Online but there’s no deep sense of despair and helplessness once the players figured they couldn’t log out and that was a bit of a bummer for me. I wanted to see the frantic look on their faces. I was going to take a crack at this anyway because I’ve gotten used to shows like SAO and the .hack series.

Anyway, the plus here is that everyone will be pitching in the effort for teamwork instead of having one overpowered lead taking all the spotlight. And by comparison, there’s a more comedic feel in the story like when the characters went to meet up with a known ally. I’ve already taken a liking to the ninja girl.

This series should be good enough to keep me entertained.

    • Foshizzel says:

True some fans probably want the characters to freak out, but that happens in all of these themes! For once someone is doing something different like Accel world and now Log Horizon; however I don’t think this series will be all rainbows and sunshine x 25 episodes.

So far the main trio of characters are extremely entertaining to watch and yeah ninja girl is great!

      Awesome to hear xD

  5. Bonk says:

    Waaaay funnier than SAO.

    • Foshizzel says:

Amen! That is one thing SAO was lacking but I know the theme is extremely different…

      • BlackBriar says:

If you look at it objectively, SAO was a lot more serious than how Log Horizon is presenting itself right now.

        • Foshizzel says:

Yeah probably why I didn’t really enjoy SAO I mean sure the themes are more dramatic and heartbreaking but in the end Kirito is a godly gamer and that sucks out all the fun even though I know LH will have drama later xD

  6. zztop says:

Log Horizon was written by the same guy who wrote Maoyuu.

  7. Joojoobees says:

I didn’t think it was the most interesting first episode of the season, but it wasn’t too bad. I hope to see some teamwork, since the main character is touted as a tactician.

    • Foshizzel says:

I hope there are more team attacks in the future and yeah the MC is a tactician which plays a huge role in raiding from personal exp xD

  8. HannoX says:

Already I like this better than SAO. RPGs are about a team of characters working together, not one overpowered guy virtually doing it all alone. And from what is shown it looks like we are going to get a team of more than just the three we’ve met so far. Good! That way we can get some meaningful character interaction. And since this series is taking a more light-hearted approach (so far) we can get some comedy. But I’m sure we’ll also get some good fight scenes since that’s also what RPGs are about. We’ve already gotten that from this first episode so there’s bound to be more to follow.

    • Foshizzel says:

Hell ya! Teamwork is far greater than a OP solo player any day in my book and judging by the opening alone I can tell our main trio will be meeting a lot of different players along the way. The comedy aspects are great! It was something SAO really needed, but I know that is kind of tough when everyone is SERIOUS all the time…I can’t wait to see more <3

  9. Irenesharda says:

I tried making it through the first episode of this, but quickly figured out that it wasn’t for me. I am not a gamer, I never have been. The only games I actively participated in were a few PS2 versus games of Bleach, Tekken, Mortal Kombat, DC Heroes, and X-men, as well as helping my brother make it through FFVII. Other than that, I’m not into video games. So, this series really didn’t hold much hope for me. If there is anything about games that I DO like, it’s the plot. So I will get interested in a plot of a series about video games as long as they aim more towards story, and less towards game play. However, this show from the first few minutes seemed to be very into the game play, and I felt as if I was once again watching my brothers during one of their many hours long stints on the PS3.

Now, I’ve never watched SAO so I can’t compare the two series, if it’s anything like this, I will probably pass.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah judging from what you wanted for this series I think they will be pushing the game stuff aside to focus on the characters and how they act in the game world together and I was a bit sad to see that as well because now it is just a typical fantasy themed anime…

Oooooh yes stay away from SAO unless you like drama and spending time watching one player solo the entire game with little to no help and a main girl who always needs someone to save her LOL

  10. d-LaN says:

I feel like an outcast after seeing all the potshots made to SAO here >_> Phantom Bullet and the future arcs should at least salvage the series though if they get animated in the future. Oh and another SAO game for the Vita called SAO: Hollow Fragment announced in case any1 is interested.

    >Impressive backgrounds
Not as good as the ones in SAO, but it have naturalize post apocalyptic feel to it so I’m cool.

I like wht I saw of this episode. Both “stay calm and let think” and “OMG WE ARE STUCK IN A GAME” works to me so I have no problem with either reaction.

My only complain is tht I’m not digging the OP/ED song and the food porn is fake. Asuna won’t be happy about this.

    • Highway says:

I thought the food thing was pretty authentic. Overall, it gives the impression that the game is not really supposed to be a VR game, and so it wasn’t programmed to have 1) a good combat interface or 2) realistic bodily experiences. So to me, it feels a lot more like the original Tron kind of thing where they’ve accidentally been stuck in the computer world.

I liked SAO well enough to defend it while it was on, but the level of story quality took a huge dive right at the point where Kirito figured out that Heathcliff was Kayaba and they had that duel. And half of the good stuff before that was the ‘side stories’ and relationship stuff that so many people decried. Pretty much everything about ‘being in a game world’ was not very good, and everything about Alfheim Online was just a dull road picture. The only thing of interest in the whole final 10 episodes was Suguha and her unfortunate love.

      • d-LaN says:

That explain the messy UI and the soggy cracker food I guess. Thanks.

If it any consolation, I hear Mother Rosario and Alicization is apparently pretty good. Atm I’m reading the 2nd book for Phantom Bullet and I kinda enjoyed reading it.

    • Foshizzel says:

SAO = for serious shounen lovers that love a OP MC that owns the game.

Log Horizon = more laid back and comical and has more teamwork in mind to beat the game.

Thats p much how I feel about both shows xD

      • d-LaN says:

To be fair, in the future arcs the arc heroines is co-starring alongside Kirito instead of him doing everything himself (or so I’m told) and in one of the arc Kirito hardly appears (or so I heard).

  11. Liza says:

I’m actually pleasantly surprised how much I liked this show when I started watching since I didn’t like SAO and .hack was a huge complicated mess that I still don’t really understand.

The character-interaction between the main trio is great. They all just compliment and bounce off of each other right from the get-go. Hopefully the show can keep up the same level of storytelling and such.

And that OP! So different. XD

    • Foshizzel says:

Teamwork > Solo OP player thats how I feel with the whole SAO vs LH comparison…

Character interaction is amazing so far! I love how the comedy shines through and how the characters are not freaking out because they can’t log out instead they learn to adapt but I know the drama will eventually appear.

The OP is great! I love the engrish xDD

  12. Highway says:

You guys are talking about the OP, and I was thinking “hmm, I don’t remember it being that good”. So I just listened to it and remembered what I thought about it:

    OMG SO HORRIBLE.

So horrible I tweeted about how horrible it was. I was thinking “you guys think you’re cool, but you’re not, and you need to stop it, right now.” “Database! Database!” should never ever ever be a part of your song. When your OP song about a video game anime makes Burst The Gravity sound less cheesy than your song, you’re doing it wrong.

    • Foshizzel says:

You just don’t appreciate a good rock op thats all 😛 or was it the broken engrish? I dunno I kind of liked it I mean it could have been worse like the Deadman Wonderland OP

Just kidding I know its not the best op so far…

      • BlackBriar says:

[One Reason] from Deadman Wonderland! From DWB and Fade. Nice pick, Fosh. That’s one of the best english OP from a Japanese band ever. It’s right up there with Never Carved In Stone’s [Spirit Inspiration] for Zetsuen no Tempest and [Out of Control] for Psycho-Pass.

      • Highway says:

The rock wasn’t the problem. It was the terrible lyrics. So painful.

        • Foshizzel says:

@BB: Oooh yeah I forgot Tempest and Psycho-Pass~

@Highway: Ahhh right I gotcha now the lyrics are dumb ahahah

    • d-LaN says:

The “database” is pretty catchy, but I can’t stand the rest of the engrish lyric.

Though to be fair, its hard to top “crossing field”.

  13. anaaga says:

I actually like this way more than SAO. Even though there are some blatant similarities with SAO, at least this one is bearable. SAO comes off depressing and straight dramatic, while LH has more of an optimistic and comedic. Not that being trapped in a game is cool, but I’m sure as hell it’s not as dramatic as SAO. The main character is also great, as he lives up to his cynical and realistic personality. I’d rather have a composed Strategist than a dramatic magical dual-wielder
So yeah, basically, there is less drama in LH so far, and I like it more because of that

    • Foshizzel says:

Less drama than SAO indeed! I love the comedic elements and the main trio makes things fun to watch instead of Kirito and Asuna’s lame love fest…

  14. Kyokai says:

    > SAO. That is all. xD
