Last spring, who would have thought that Majestic Prince would have been the one to impress and amaze us. Of it’s contemporaries, Gargantia was beautiful, but flawed in it’s plot and execution. And Valvrave is terrible and only seen as a joke. MJP starts out slow, but it picks up steam, and as it progresses, you begin to genuinely feel for the characters. And when when you reach the finale, you’re on the edge of your seat, rooting for victory. This was the best mecha show I’ve watched in a long time, and I would recommend it to anyone. Glad you watched and reviewed it!

    • zztop says:

In defense of both Gargantia and Valvrave, I think Gargantia was also constrained by its 13-ep only run. I think there just wasn’t enough time for the writers to completely address the expansive universe, plot points and flesh out all the characters in that run.

And Valvrave was always intended to be as crazy as that, which I understand may not sit well with some viewers.

Btw,I enjoyed both of them immensely.

      • JoeAnimated says:

Gargantia constrained? There are many shows that accomplish quite a bit in 13 episodes. It just failed to do that. It lacked focus on executing the key points of the plot. They didn’t have to throw everything in there, and then try to tie it all together. You can say that Valvrave was always intended to be crazy, but that’s how it was portrayed prior to it’s first episode.

I found it hard to enjoy Gargantia for what it was, and in the end was glad to see it completed. And I enjoy Valvrave for the same reasons I enjoy Guilty Crown.

    • Namika says:

I’d have to defend Gargantia and say, that wasn’t as flawed in plot and execution. It could have been better, but as zztop said, with 13 episodes, there’s only so much you can do. And personally, I found the execution done rather well, for several various reasons.

      • JoeAnimated says:

I think the 13 episode argument is more of an excuse, than a legit point to their failures. There were 2 or 3 episodes where the plot wasn’t advanced along like it could have been. Opportunists to add to character growth and make a real relationship between Ledo and Amy were missed. The show ended up a shell of what it could have been in the right hands. It had its moments where you could see what it could have been, but it stalled before achieving that goal.

        • Foshizzel says:

And what about Urobutcher? He kind of failed to kill off any of the main characters! I feel if they were to kill anyone off it would have been Amy just for some shock value which would push Ledo into a revenge character, but from what I always heard Urobutcher wasn’t in charge he was just assisting Gargantia…

        • Namika says:

Nah, I don’t think any episodes were lost in this anime. Not every show has to be epic and groundbreaking like the Titans, or Code Geass or whatever. To me, Garrgantia was a splendid show, with strong atmosphere. It had it’s moments, it made me laugh and almost made me tear up. At the right moment it got serious but right when you would think that the characters are screwed, you get that amazing ending.
This show was great. And the flaws you pointed out aren’t all really flaws. This is a more easy-going anime, that’s all.

    • Foshizzel says:

@Joe: I completely agree with you and I will admit to being a complete hater at the start thinking that MJP was going to be another SEED/DESTINY remix, but in the end I am so happy that it kept me watching and hopefully we get to see another season soon!

@zztop: True if Gargantia had more episodes to work with it COULD have been something awesome, but it failed to pull me in week after week like Valvrave and MJP did; however I am not saying that Gargantia was a failure it just needed more plot/story progression.

@Namika: Sad but true on the episode count.

    The princess and the hero~

Try the mother and her son! 😛 Gives that pic a whole different perspective doesn’t it! LOL

So, the series is at an end and there was a bit of sequel bait and a few plotholes that weren’t addressed. However, all and all the series ended on a good note, not a great note, but still a good one.

The fight between Izuru and Jiart was really good, the idea of the sacrifice of Cmdr. Simon was good, but I thought it was pathetic that they couldn’t even let him die an heroic death. Was this war epic so afraid of death that they only killed off two named hero characters that didn’t have much screen time anyway?

So, will I see this for a second season? Perhaps. Without Jiart and a majority of the Wulgaru characters, they are really not as interesting. The king who has had few lines seems to have a plan, but beyond finding out what it is, I really don’t care much. Orange Leader is interesting, and I think Red Leader still lives, but really don’t know what’s going to happen with them.

Of the three mecha series, I have to say that this one is probably in the middle. Gargantia started off with high hopes, but just ended up being mediocre. Valvrave is my all time favorite. I love all its twists and turns and was literally waiting up all day in expectation for the episode when it would come out. MJP was really generic and rocky in the beginning, but ended up being a fun adventure.

This series had a rocky start and only really started picking up for me in the second half. I’m not sure if I want to sit through that again. I probably will check out a second season if they do do it, since I like mecha. However, I’m going to stick to my darker, grittier, angst stuff for now. This series and it’s aversion to sacrifice, stakes, and death really almost killed it for me, if not for the interesting character subplots and the fascinating battles and villains.

However, for what it’s worth, this was a good series with good concepts and some very good fight scenes. It could have been better, but it did its job well. This kind of happier, lighter war mecha series has its audience, I just don’t really think it’s totally me.

I give this series a solid 7. Peace out.

      hahaha yes it does…

Season two is still a possible because the aliens are still out there and I am sure they want revenge for the humans blowing up their warp gate thingy.

OMG THAT FINAL FIGHT WAS AWESOME! It had me cheering on Izuru even though in the back of my mind I always knew he would survive, but they could have done something with him being sucked through the warp gate after it blows up basically leaving Izuru lost in space? That would have been a better ending with everyone assuming he died >.>

Gargantia had lots of chances to be awesome but like you said it failed at some spots unlike Valvrave which is crazy and always shocking! I swear the best moments are always the after credit scenes.

Yeah MJP is more of a happy mecha series instead of dramatic.

      Good score~

i actually liked this more than Val, it’s as corny as it sounds,”from my time”, Izuru definitely was the main focus, Asagi founding their parentage was cool too, i wish i could have seen more of their comander(not Izuru’s father, their teacher).

The name of the team being Rabbits, struck me like a “sacrifice”,
which, if you consider what they are is philosophical.
the Juria System was the highlight of the show for me at least.

The characters i liked the most were:
    – Teoria(miss lacus Clyne):Although she was a massive copy of Lacus from Gundam Seed/destiny, she was an enjoyable character.
    – Jiart/Jidzart(or something like it): Izuru’s rival, i like psychopaths characters, he had a cool vibe.
    – Izuru: When he just up and said: “I want to become a hero” it was over for me, he got a spot on the best in the show, seeing him being the way he is and his delusions was way too funny, the main character(Izuru) obliviousness towards girls(Key and Teoria)sucked, it was just, obvious that they liked him that i was uncomfortable

The Second Season flag was too easy to notice at least i think so…it reminded me too much of Gundam Seed not to! it was practically a rip off, when Izuru get’s blown and everyone is worried and yeah, it was almost the same thing

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah I would easily rank MJP higher than Valvrave in terms of enjoyment factor, but Valvrave has more “shock” value and super sneaky characters xD

I liked that bit near the end of the series with Izuru/Asagi finding out that they were brothers!

Interesting choice of favorite characters <3

FK YA SEASON TWO LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

      • AllenAndArth says:

Val was bizarre even by mecha terms…
        and
we have some creepy standards out there:
        – Gin iro no Olynssis
        – Immortal Grand Prix
        – Heroic Age(it’s a master piece, but…it’s still creepy)
        – Neo Ranga
        – Kotetsushin Jeeg
        – Divergence Eve(one of the creepiest, EVA-Level of difficulty in plot terms, though that’s just because the plot is so bad that you get confused…they put out even strange time-travels, with horrible OP and ED…the music is catchy…until you see the letter…with lots of fan service)

        • Foshizzel says:

We might as well throw in Eureka Seven Ao for their wacky take on parallel worlds ahaha

          • AllenAndArth says:

nah… that’s pretty normal if you consider some of them…
and divergence Eve(it has parallel worlds too…yep, just mechas, monsters, time travel and space battles were not enough, parallel world have a point in there too, along with clones and creepy dreams…and they even made a spin off called Misaki chronicles…

  5. Sumairii says:

Try the mother and her son! 😛 Gives that pic a whole different perspective doesn’t it! LOL

    Haha this.

I did find it a bit cheesy that after killing off most of Team Doberman they pulled a fast one on us and saved Simon and Teoria, but at least it made for a happier ending. Not sure if this is a show that needs a second season though. Seemed like this was a fairly satisfying conclusion in spite of potential continuation.

    • AllenAndArth says:

satisfying? what was satisfying about that ending?
by the way…Did they ever found a consensus on Angie sex?( i mean they, for some reason spent a long time discussing if Angie is a guy or a girl…).

By the way, the image of Key and the purple 2(i think) is great!

      • Irenesharda says:

No, they never did. But this is on top of quite a few other plotholes. Like why Ange is bipolar, and why he/she was sick as well at the same time as Izuru. No conclusion to the romance subplots. Who is Juria, who I’m guessing the system was named after, that Simon apologizes to in a regret that he didn’t die? Izuru was rescued, but his telomeres are still unraveling and his genes are falling apart. How are they going to solve that, or is it magically going to go away? Did Jiart survive just like Izuru? Is Izuru okay? He looked kind of sinister at the end there. What was Jiart and Teoria’s relationship? Jiart actually left his fight to go see her, even though she didn’t seem to care two cents about him. What was Jiart’s plan and why did he have Orange Leader reach out to Teoria? He knew her stance so what did he want to talk to her about?

And that’s just some of the few.

        • Foshizzel says:

Ah yes typical mecha anime story with lots of plot holes and unanswered questions! Maybe this is just their way of locking it down for a second season? I mean the enemy is not finished forever xD

      • Sumairii says:

I know they left so many things unexplained, but it just felt like a conclusion now that the epic final battle is over.

    • Foshizzel says:

LOLOL Yeah technically they could be mom/son LOL

Team Doverman were all bosses I was so freaking sad for the ones that died it was like wait? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! DON’T JINX YOURSELF T_____________T

  6. BlackBriar says:

Majestic Prince was an alright series. Slow for the most part but I didn’t sticking with it. The animation was good and there was a fair amount of detail in the character design making them close to real humans as much as possible.

One of the few things that could have been done better are the characters themselves, mainly the five leads. For some reason, I’d had trouble identifying with them despite some development being thrown in. Other things are that there isn’t much room to delve into certain inquiries like the cause behind Ange’s split personality and the link between Izuru and Asagi having similar DNA.

Overall, it was an interesting series worth notice even if it didn’t have the same pull as Gargantia and Valvrave. I’d sometimes stack up some of the episodes a bit and marathon through them. I saw a post on ANN a while back saying the studio was on the fence about making a season season and so far, nothing has been confirmed. However a second season is very much welcomed. The finale was open ended after all.

    • Irenesharda says:

I thought they did go into why Izuru and Asagi have similar DNA. It’s because they are half-brothers. Some viewers are still on the fence about whether Teoria is mother to all the Fail 5 or just Izuru. However, we know that Izuru and Asagi share the same father, so their DNA is about 50% match to each other. If Teoria is Asagi’s mother too, then their DNA would be 75% similar.

    • Foshizzel says:

MJP FOR THE WIN and the animation surprised me at times! Hell even the CGI was great! As for the character designs I will admit they turned me away originally because I was not used to them pulling off those goofy anime expressions, but thankfully they ditched that rather fast.

The only characters that I honestly feel changed were Asagi and Izuru who were in all aspects “rivals” at the start of the series but they eventually become friends and brothers! Sadly the other characters remained the same…

Right since MJP is a “complete” season they had to include lame mecha filler aka setting up for a full scale war that takes roughly four to five episodes to set up and only one or two episodes to wrap up? I am used to that thanks to all the Gundam series xD

I will continue to say MJP > Valvrave > Gargantia in terms of enjoyment factor.

  7. d-LaN says:

I’m just a bit more than halfway in GKMP, but I’d like to share some details I saw frm the forums.

Apparently the anime story is running parallel frm the manga as there a shot of the anime F5 on the TV in the manga. Likewise, manga Izuru show up a little while in the anime too.

    Personally, I’m enjoying this as much as I enjoyed Valvrave and Gargantia. Though VVV is the only one I’m done with ^_^;

    • Foshizzel says:

OOooh there is a freaking manga? HOLY CRAP I gotta read it or is it not translated yet? Also if it is running along side of the manga I assume s2 will have to wait for the manga to get ahead of the anime? I tend to see that with every long running anime+manga.

Valvrave is awesome but I feel that is more of a shock and awe series versus something like Gargantia and MJP? That said MJP is more of a classic mecha with similar tropes for oldschool mecha while Gargantia is hardcore story/plot driven.

      • d-LaN says:

AFAIK, it isn’t scanlated but you can read the official translation here.

And I mean “running in parallel” as the manga story is a siide story of the anime set in the same continuity and time frame. So it doesn’t need to catch up with the manga.

  8. Rathje says:

Well, looks like I have to give this one a second chance. I watched the first episode and didn’t like it much. I was busy, so I didn’t give it the traditional 3-episode test. Guess I need to do that now.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah it takes roughly three to four episodes for the actual plot to kick in, but once you get into the series you will find it to be really addictive…well if you love mech shows anyway lol

  9. skylion says:

If you recall, I was an initial and happy adopter of the show during early days. But I dropped it like nothing around episode…something or other….they kinda graduated, but didn’t really, or something.

So, give me one sentence that would rock the skylion, and I might put this on the back list….

    • Valk says:

It’s worth to watch for the 2nd part of the season. The mecha battle in episode 14 will remain the best one i’ve ever seen.
