First Impressions – High School DxD New [NSFW]

Time for hot Demon babes!

spring13-highwEven though it’s basically by itself this season, I decided that I couldn’t let the lack of a MetaFap digest post stop us from blogging the second season of (imo) one of the best ecchi shows ever: Highschool DxD. And partly because I really enjoyed the first series, and partly because I’ve actually read the LN that comes next, I think this is going to be a good series, with both good action and good fanservice. So how has the season opened?

As Expected!

Good Morning Issei

When a series starts right off the bat with this, it’s probably going to be good…

As I said, I’ve read the LN for at least this storyline they’re working on, as well as the previous ones. And like I said for the OVA that came out a month or so ago, I think we’re seeing some good changes from Issei (Kaji Yuki). He’s still trying to be the Harem King, he’s still lusting after boobs, and he’s still a pretty unmagical demon, but he’s improving. He doesn’t seem as quick to dereliction of duty when he sees some oppai, and he’s getting more reliable for his Master, the lovely Rias Gremory (Hikasa Youko). So reliable, in fact, that he’s causing all the other girls to fall for him, including Asia (Asakura Azumi), Akeno (Itou Shizuka), and probably even Koneko-chan (Taketatsu Ayana). Well, maybe Koneko will take a little longer.

Aww, baby pictures

Showing them baby pictures will definitely help build the harem

So Where is the Story Going?

Kiba Messes Up

Kiba’s really being a tool, but I like the way it lets them characterize Rias

Unlike a couple of the shows I covered last season (OreImo and Samurai Brides), Episode 1 of DxD got right into the story presented in the 3rd LN. Somehow, Rias has decided that she’s going to live with Issei as well as Asia, and has moved into his parents house. And she also, somehow, finds an excuse to sleep in Issei’s bed every night. And of course, she can’t sleep with clothes on. But the real story starts when Mom brings in some photo albums while the whole ‘club’ is at the house. Kiba (Nojima Kenji) sees a picture of Issei playing with a childhood friend of his, with a holy sword in the background. And if I’m being honest, this starts him brooding and acting like an idiot. While it’s good that Issei finally gets to pass on the Idiot Ball to someone else, it does turn Kiba into a bit of a whiny brat. But I can’t say he doesn’t have a good reason, having been experimented on in the past, and left for dead in an effort by the church to manufacture wielders of Excalibur.

Wielders of the Holy Swords

But now they’ve got new ones…

How Does It Look?

Rias Gremory

The show looks almost completely unchanged from the previous season, with animation by TNK and still Yanagisawa Tetsuya as the director. The OP theme is a new song by Larval Stage Planning, but this time, instead of the most memorable ED sequence ever with a song by Stylips, the ED song is sung by the four ladies of the Occult Research Club. While I’ll miss the pole dancing, the new animation is fairly nice, and the song seems worth listening to. Other than that, it’s pretty much the same Highschool DxD that you loved from the first season.

A Couple of Extra Observations

Akeno

Main observation: Akeno is terrific.

I’m actually surprised and pleased that they’re doing so much of the story in-depth. No, it’s not the most amazing story, but after the travesty of Samurai Brides, I think my expectations were lowered quite a bit. But there are a few things that they’ve included early that I thought were interesting. First was Akeno’s sucking the dragon’s power out of Issei’s arm, which I didn’t expect to be so early. But because it was, and because it left a few things out, I’m kind of half expecting another similar scene. Second, Issei’s such a good guy, but does he really understand what harems do? There’s just that lovely irony that he’s got a harem, and he won’t touch them: he feels Rias is out of his league, and Asia he feels like he has to protect. Yet, either one of them would literally do anything for (and to!) him, especially with the way he’s changed for the better (as I mentioned above). And that’s just who he’s got for now. And third, I like how they’re bringing Ddraig into the show, again early on. The ‘talk to a flashing green spot on my hand’ part was a bit dull, but it got the job done.

Bonus MetaFap Section! (More NSFW than above)

Highschool DxD New has been about everything I could ask for. The story is moving along nicely, the look is still great, the action is still fun. About the only thing that’s not great is Kiba, but that’s the story, innit? I do like that they’re telling Kiba’s story, but from Issei’s, and the rest of the ‘club’s’ point of view, and that Rias is still her same self, at once strict and caring. I’m definitely looking forward to the rest of the series.

I have to agree it’s one of the best shows on. And they don’t have to change much, just polish all the good stuff.

Asia better start moving on all fronts….gonna get left behind girl. I found her background development better than the Idiot Ball Kiva got to carry.

    Looking forward to more.

Making Issei *less* of a dumbass is a great move. Too many times in shows like this, it devolves into just fanservice and idiot harem hijinks, and sometimes you even start to wonder how more girls come to like the guy, because he’s gotten dumber.

So what I like here is that they’ve made Issei get more reliable, more capable, actually *less* perverted, and therefore more desirable. It makes it a lot easier to understand why more girls find him attractive.

Really all Asia has going for her is the clumsy cutie bit, and that Issei thinks he has to protect her. But I don’t think that’ll get her that far when you consider the competition she faces.

I am in season one mode around episode nine! Finishing it asap to catch up to the new episodes but so far it is very entertaining and mad props to Yuki Kaji I think his best roles are the ecchi obsessed dudes LOL

I’ll be honest that I kind of got a little lost at the end of the first season, because I read the LN’s for that during the season, and for whatever reason, the chain of events through the last couple episodes didn’t match up what was in my head from reading it. But both ways were good stories, and both ended up in the same place. Enjoy the rest!

Yuki Kaji is awesome playing perverts. The only one I believe can give him competition would be Hiro Shimono. For perverted roles, personally, Yuki Kaji is more at home playing Issei here than he was playing Youto in The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat. He was a lot more reserved in the latter.

      • Cybersteel says:

Kaji Yuki does voice another MC in this season. Subaru from loliball (Ro-Kyu-Bu)
I wonder in these types of shows he does voice work in predominantly female-seiyuu centric environment. Seiyuus typically have similar schedules, whereas staffer and animators tend to have longer ones.

        • skylion says:

His character in loliball is quite distinct most of the time.

You go, Highway!! We can’t have this sereis denied a second time on Metanorn and we can’t let the MetaFap posts die even if one ecchi show stands alone this season.

Not even a 20 seconds into the first episode and we get hit with hot fanservice. Things are off to a good start. Though still perverted, Issei has matured. I guess things change when you fight for the woman you want even if you’re her servant.

There is some pity for Issei’s situation. Two girls are in his grasp but he’s being bound by morals and self esteem issues. If things are to turn out good for him, Rias should just tell him she wants him as much as he wants her. She was going to use the opportunity in bed to bond with him before Asia came in and moreover, she moved into his house.

Amusingly, Asia is losing her innocence competing with Rias and I doubt she’s aware of it. Stripping down because of being flustered to compete with the other girl. That’s enough grounds to start calling her a pervert. If she was aware of what Issei thinks of her, she could tell him it’s alright and it isn’t necessary to think of her as a little sister.

*sigh* As usual, the ones that pissed me off in the second episode turned out to be from the church. Almost every anime I see, it’s those kinds of people that act like asses. I wanted to at least see Issei use his Dress Break on Xenovia for persecuting Asia like a hardened criminal. But things are going to be interesting seeing that the other girl is his childhood friend. One’s a demon and the other is a paladin. Where do we go from here?

    • Highway says:

Heh, I don’t know if I’ll keep using the MetaFap tag, but I had to for this post. I am going to continue blogging the show, tho.

There are sometimes I think the fanservice goes a little too far. Like in the first episode, just as Rias is about to smite the escaped minion, *random fullframe upskirt shot!* demon killed. Why? I dunno, it’s not like they don’t shoot half the show with gnome cameramen anyway.

Rias is kind of in a weird spot. She’s supposed to be saving herself for her husband, but now she’s not engaged, and she’s fallen pretty hard for Issei (I don’t think I’m giving away spoilers here, this was all from Season 1). Plus, she really can’t keep her hands off him. I don’t think she’s *too* worried about that now, but they do get interrupted an awful lot.

Asia, I think she’s just caught out a lot. She doesn’t know what she’s really doing, just that she doesn’t want to lose to Rias. I’m sure she doesn’t care about losing anything to Issei, tho. Really, with either one of them, if he made a move, they’d go along with it totally.

I think the childhood friend aspect is a bit overplayed. He didn’t even remember Irina, and she is a member of the church. There’s no compatibility there at all.
