Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S – 04

Saten-“We have to shop for swimsuits today!”          Kuroko-“I like the way you think girl.”

Welcome back to more Railgun S here on Metanorn and I have to ask are you having fun so far with this series? I guess that hard to say since the Misaka sisters’ arc is technically a recap for those of us who have seen Index season one, but I suppose for the new fans it might be fun for them to discover Misaka’s backstory for the first time.

Misaka’s playground

Misaka-“Why am I stuck watching these kids today?!”

This episode was quite easy to follow this time around instead of the massive info dumb we got last week explaining the origins of the “sisters noise” experiment and how Misaka was cloned, but the time we bounce from the past and present, but most of the episode followed Misaka hanging out with Uiharu, Saten, Kuroko and Erii as they went shopping for some everyday items and swimsuits! Hinting at a possible beach themed episode in the future. During that time Saten brought up the urban legend regarding the news of the mysterious cloning experiment of a certain level five which sparked an interesting question! What would you do if you discovered that you had a clone? Saten choose the route of splitting her homework while Uiharu and Erii thought about ordering lots of food, but Misaka on the other hand was unable to answer the question because I think she is starting to believe the hype surrounding the clones.

As for myself I have no idea what I would do with a clone of myself, I could work with my copy to work on a manga since it really is tough to do solo? What about you? What would you do with a clone of yourself? After that the real core of the episode followed Misaka hanging out with a girl she helped back in season one and a bunch of  her friends that overheard she was really bored, but for most of us out there I can say I found it to be somewhat boring; however it shows us that Misaka is great with kids for the most part until they start making fun of her of course. That said, those scenes with the children helped highlight another feature of the cloning experiment after Misaka talked to a boy with similar electric abilities like herself since she shares the same ability she is able to communicate to him through a network, now I barely remember how it works aside from characters like Last Order and the various sisters sharing memories and experiences because I know that is explained back in Index season after Touma hangs out with one of the Misaka clones! I just have to find out WHY you would want this if you bought your own army of Misaka clones? I suppose they could sneak into a enemy base without relying on radios for the element of surprise? Either way I think it is just a communication setup.

I think I am a clone now

This is the best song about cloning!

Other than the cute scenes with Misaka and her army of psychic children following her around Academy City we got to see how the cloning process goes from a simple DNA sample all the way to a full grown copy ready to go, but it is super depressing at the same time for those of us that know just what these poor girls go through especially when they have to go up against you know who? At least that scientist named Amami Eika (voiced by Hasako Kanemoto aka Kotoura-san) tried her best to treat the clone like a human being unlike the other scientist who only thought of the Misaka sister as an experiment. We also discovered after the clones are “born” because they are technically newborn babies trapped in a teenagers body which of course is cured really fast with the help of that Sword-Art-Online-ish looking helmet that allows you to “program” the clones with basic motor skills minus the use of emotions cause that of course would cause certain problems…so which version of Misaka do you prefer short hair or long hair? If she had long hair I would instantly think of her mother that appeared in Index season two or that “other” Misaka from the light novels, but sadly I can not talk much about that version because it would be considered as spoilers!

Now the best moment this week was revealed at the very end of the episode with Misaka FINALLY meeting one of her clones, but unfortunately we have to wait for next week just to see how she really reacts to seeing her copy! I am expecting some shock (yes pun intended) followed by some hilarious back and forth chatter between the two of them and Misaka giving away her treasured frog pin.

Fun with Misaka and friends

Kuroko has died and gone to heaven.

Chocolate is always the perfect answer to any question.

Clearly she has been hanging around Touma for a long time!

Science has no use of clothing in Academy City…

End thoughts

Well this was certainly an interesting episode even though I will admit that I was quite bored with Misaka and the children, but ah well it was really cute to see how she interacted with them and the whole time I was thinking Misaka could totally work at a daycare or have a future family with Touma? Just kidding because we all know Kuroko would not let that happen in a million years. Other than that it was interesting to see how the whole cloning process works in Academy City, but damn it is still really depressing knowing what will eventually happen to countless Misaka sisters later on which has me shouting Touma where the hell are you bro! I know countless people out there really HATE his guts, but like it or not he is the key to their salvation against Mr. Accelerator who is appearing in the next freaking episode? OH MY GOD! YES I AM SO HYPE FOR THAT!

I found this episode very well done in terms of pacing and characterization. I enjoyed how the flashback scenes with this particular Sister was underscored with Mikasa’s interaction with the children. This was something that the clone misses out on.
A life. It is a horrific notion to breed a new life for the purposes they’ve outlined. But is it a kindness to breed this life without a background, and with no other purpose, and with no emotional output? The nudity of her “birth” was anything but titilation under the context; and underscored how even very simple thing is perverted.

Academy City is a scary place.

Why the Mikasa Network. Consider it a stage one. Consider Level Upper part of that. What if you get tons of regular folks in that city that have access to that kind of mental network? And what if you control the output of that network? What are your own thoughts after that?

Academy City is a scary place.

    • Foshizzel says:

I like that thought Skylion about the children and the clones, but we saw one of the clones taking care of a cat in season one of index.

Indeed Academy is a scary place…

Yeah you are right about the Misaka Network I guess in the right hands it could be used for good, but of course if someone evil gets ahold of it who knows what will happen xD

      • skylion says:

…having combed the Index Wikia, I’m not that wrong about the Sister Noise…

        • Foshizzel says:

Good work! I can always go to Skylion.wiki.com for all my anime needs ;D

          • skylion says:

I wouldn’t. The HTML is buggy as all get out, and it has ton of random pages, and dead links galore. Maybe it needs an update?

I was bored with the children as well, but it made an interesting parallel between the real children and the newborn clone, although I doubt anyone is going to treat it as such. Misaka has deep pockets for those froggie things.

As for the clone question, I suppose it wouldn’t be terrible to have one around but only if we were the same age. And I also have to consider the humanity of the clone- is the clone a person and deserving of the same rights, or is the clone something else? Obviously if the two of us had the same interests and could work on things in coordinated efforts, that would be alright.

I like the Misaka with long hair, although short hair is probably more convenient for jumping around with electricity.

    • Foshizzel says:

Indeed the bits with the children was kind of boring for me and now that you mention it you are right Gecko! I guess they were showing the differences between the two?

Oooh damn you went the deep route, but it is an awesome thought <3

Long hair Misaka ftw and you are right short hair would give you more movement~

      • Gecko says:

Well I only know the deep route since we had a debate in science class once and someone thought of it. Just stealing.

    • Highway says:

On the point of the sovereignty and humanity of clones, for me it’s very simple: Are they sentient human beings? If they are truly clones of a person, then they are, and as such should be afforded all rights and privileges that any other person is afforded, on condition that they also have the same responsibilities. I have no truck with the idea that clones wouldn’t have a soul or some essential component of life that would relegate them to second or third-class status. Is it a human animal with human intelligence? Then it’s a human. Full Stop.

  3. berrish17 says:

lol, Misaka’s facial expressions are priceless XD

    • Foshizzel says:

I know right? I love her expressions!

      • BlackBriar says:

If this was a contest of expressions, she’d have a tough time against Hataraku Maou-sama’s Emi. She’s owning that department.

        • Foshizzel says:

Maou sama is getting there! Same with Yurushiki? They have some great expressions xD

  4. BlackBriar says:

A little slice of life-ish in some parts but a good episode. I’ll Misaka’s behavior from the start as some sort of state of denial after she found out there really is a program making clones of her until she saw the truth of the rumors with that clone.

If I had a clone, I’d use him to deal with half of whatever important things there are to do. That way, the work would be done at twice the pace and in half the time. It’s depressing how the scientists just see people as lab rats, even if they’re clones and heartlessly continue with their experiments. At least these watching over the development of the recent Misaka sister aren’t in the same league as Telestina or Amata Kihara.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah I think the rumors of the clones has finally hit her now that she knows it is finally true?!

It is depressing knowing that the Misaka sisters are going to be used as lab rats for Accelerator’s quest to become the first level six! Yeah that is true about Amata Kihara xD

  5. Highway says:

If I had a clone, it’d be like me, so it’s not like I could get it to do things I wouldn’t do. I fear it would be like when Calvin made a duplicator machine (“He’s a clone of you all right.” “What do you mean? This guy’s a total jerk!”).

The scientists we’ve seen in Academy City are definitely lacking in the morality department. You’d think after a few of these incidents, they’d do a little more checking up on these guys, unless the lack of morality comes from the top (which I imagine it does).

I liked the S-O-L stuff this episode, as I usually do. Even Misaka with the kids was fine, exercising her singlemindedness for Gekota. Well, lots of badges for the kids!

    • Foshizzel says:

      LOL!

Truth Highway the scientists of Academy City do not care for anything especially breaking rules or cloning people! I think the gecko doctor is probably the only decent doctor/scientist?

Those kids were totally like “Oh great we have a million badges now? Thanks Misaka-san”

  6. belatkuro says:

instead of the massive info dumb we got last week

    Typo or intentional? 😉

or that “other” Misaka from the light novels

Best Sisters clone, though that’s kinda ironic given her name 😉

And I was mostly bored with the episode, except for when it cuts to the parts with Misaka #9982. Wish they kept the “first tea” part but oh well. But mostly, the episode was boring. It was more tolerable in the manga but here it’s kinda irritating. As much as I like hearing KanaHana, her character is so not needed here. As if Uiharu and Saten weren’t boring enough…
The last few minutes, the part after the ED and the preview were good though.

Accel time next episode, oh yeah. Glorious Okamoto Nobuhiko and his crazy laughs. Looking forward to it.

    • Foshizzel says:

Whoops! Yeah typo ftw because it actually works both ways >.>

Truth about the other Misaka! I have not read anything about that version and I know she appears later on in the index light novels which I should start reading again, oh yeah Erii is a nice character and all especially since it is HanaKana, but she doesn’t really do a whole lot for the story! I guess she is just filler for the swimsuit parts xD

YAAAAAAAY! I am so damn ready for Accelerator <3
