spring13-highwWelcome back for more Haiyore! Nyarlko-san W discussion! Two weeks of Nyarlko, and the story’s taken quite the turn. What’s the big change? Read on and find out!

Love is in the Air

Nyarlko gets close to Mahiro

The big motion has been on the love front. We all know how much Nyarlko has been chasing Mahiro, and Hasuta’s always got the hots for him, but who else is after him now? We had some interesting scenes in episode 4 with Tamao sighing wistfully about things that might have been, even as she stepped up to ‘help’ Nyarlko win Mahiro’s affection. Tamao would really like to be the girl that Mahiro’s with, but with the zoo that’s surrounding him, I think she’s just thinking she’s not worth of jumping in that fray. Plus, how can you compete with the craziness that is Nyarlko? And it’s a shame, because I think that Mahiro would probably do really well with Tamao.

Tamao gives advice

No, Tamao, don’t friendzone yourself!

But the other thing that really comes out to me in these scenes is the sincere love that Nyarlko has for Mahiro. Yes, she’s wacky and off the wall, but given the chance to calm down just the least bit about it, she’s almost heartbroken the way he rejects her. And in the end it’s almost entirely her own fault. When they’re together in the bath, engineered by Nyarlko in her room, actually being quiet, and he asks why she likes him. And of course, she answers love at first sight, but she can’t keep the quiet going long. Finally, Mahiro says what I’ve suspected for a while: If she wasn’t always forcing herself at him, he would probably like her (Tamao, here’s your chance! That’s the plan!).

Inspection Time

Kuuko's a little obsessed

We know who Kuuko really likes…

But that’s not all the love plot that we get. It’s drop-in alien time, this time Kuuko’s older cousin Kuune. Kuune’s the type to give Akane Akazi a run for her money in younger relative obsession, and goes the extra mile to sexually assault Kuuko in the foyer as soon as she sees her (for a change, CrunchyRoll showed more of this scene than the TV airing did. Let’s just say there were hands where there might shouldn’t be hands…). She’s an inspector from the same group they work for, but she’s really there to get Kuuko to make good on her pre-school promise to marry her, about as unenforceable a contract as you could come up with, but Kuuko’s worried enough about it to claim that Mahiro is her fiance. It doesn’t help that Kuuko’s real love is a Nyarlthotepian, who are apparently the Hatfields to the Cthugaians McCoys. But in the act of pretending she’s in love with Mahiro, she starts to realize that she “doesn’t dislike him”, anime code for “she does like him.”

Surprise Engagement

But is it enough to marry him?

Nyaruko reference corner

Run Away!

Run Awaaaaay!

These two episodes have been a bit lacking in the hilarious references lately and it feels like they might be running out of ideas, (also thanks to NyaruReferences again) but as per usual there are lots of shout outs that point to Lovecraft mythos and of course tons of Kamen Rider which is a series that I have no idea about sadly. Instead of talking about both episodes separately I will just combine the references into one! Starting off with Lupin III, Heartcatch Precure (Mahiro’s mom voices Cure Moonlight), Jojo’s Bizarre AdventureEvangelion 1.11Mobile suit Gundam, Code Geass, DBZ with Piccalo’s Special Beam Cannon, Fist of the North Star and AKB0048’s Aitakatta saying provided by Kuuko’s cousin Kuune. So which of these listed references did you like from both episodes? Personally I loved the hilarious use of Mobile suit Gundam, Code Geass, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Heartcatch and of course I can (not) forget that Evangelion 1.11 parody because Narulko looked like a badass with that sniper rifle.

End thoughts

Well these two episodes certainly had their fair share of hilarious moments, but I think the fourth episode threw out an interesting twist with the arrival of Kuuko’s cousin Kuune who reminds me of Akane Akazi aka the older sister of Akarin from Yuri Yuri! Because both characters are full on yuri girls that have things for their female siblings; however I think that might get old really fast if Kuune is always jumping Kuuko, then again she does the same thing to Nyarlko so it only seems fair right? It also seems like this second season is hinting at the possibility of a love triangle forming between Mahiro, Kuuko and Nyarlko; however I know they are only faking their surprise relationship to throw Ku-ne off and I guess we need more episodes just to see how that whole thing plays out, so what did you enjoy from these two episodes?

Two weeks of love and lonely hearts for Nyarlko-san! The love polygons got more complicated, with Kuune and Tamao added to the mix, and even worse with Kuuko possibly starting to fall for Mahiro. And it’s a shame that Nyarlko can’t understand Mahiro’s objection to her, although I don’t know if she could change her fundamental nature to be less random and pushy. Mahiro obviously has some affection for all of them, but could it turn into love with the right change in conditions? And which one do you think is the best for him?

More Fun with Nyarlko!

XD Nyarureferences ftw ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) At least I catch the Kamen Rider ones sometimes

I totally ship Kuuko x Mahrio =v= Although, Tamae is kind of bothering me with her hopeless mindset and what not.

Akaza Akane is awesome though! XD She has a dakimakura with Akari on it lol But I guess Kuune does win since she sexually harasses Kuuko straight out.

    • Highway says:

I think it took a few steps past ‘Harassment’ and way into ‘Assault’ territory. And Mahiro’s mom with the veiled threats about ‘raising a young boy here’ was awesome.

      • BlackBriar says:

The veiled threats about ‘raising a young boy here’ shouldn’t even be valid since she said that after she did nothing to stop Mahiro from seeing Kuune assault Kuuko or did nothing to break up the whole thing at all. There won’t be much chance for prevention if something has already slipped in.

        • Highway says:

Well, in Mahiro’s mom’s defense, she was pretty late to the Kuuko rape.

          • BlackBriar says:

            Lawyers and their technicalities!! LOL

          • skylion says:

Sirrah! I’ll have a glass, so long as it isn’t too peppery..

            • BlackBriar says:

Sure, sir. Here’s the fee: One Shinobu Oshino and a Leticia Drakurea.

          • skylion says:

For this sirrah! Sir, sack the sommelier, with due haste.

    Excellent review, gentlemen.

Her’s the think with Nyalko. Yeah, it’s scary that she has 999 other scary forms, but the human one isn’t scary, it’s just larger-than-life. And if given proper incentive, she will tone it town to actual size.

Now, she’s an alien. And out there is space there are millions of worlds, all of them amazing by human perception. And by human standards, we can’t live on or even visit nearly all of them. She can. Methane atmosphere, she’s got a form that can take that. High gravity, low gravity. She’s got in in the can.

All those amazing places, and all those insane forms, and she chooses one world, one form, and one person.

Yeah, he should give her some incentive. It’s a win-win.

    • Highway says:

I really don’t know if Nyarlko can tone it down, at least for more than a fleeting amount of time. She’s like the Trix Rabbit, as soon as she gets a hint of her goal, she loses her self-control and blows it.

That she is truly and deeply in love with Mahiro is beyond doubt. But whether she could ever be someone he could stand to be with is the big question.

      • skylion says:

Speaking as a person that has had the Manix Pixie Girlfriend, it is rather hard. I don’t want another and that relationship lasted as long as it needed too. I don’t wish her any ill, but man, she was a firecracker…

But even she could read the signs I gave off to chill, but I had to give them. Just being that “tsundere wall” as you point out is not enough.

          Stupid Skylion…

  3. Highway says:

One reference I liked was the Haruhi “Live Alive” poster with Nyarlko. The “Cyclone! Joker!” one went on a little too long for my taste.

    • BlackBriar says:

I have to agree. The vacuum repeating “cyclone” was getting annoying. The staff dropped the ball letting it drag on that long. Besides, I don’t get the significance of having a vacuum with dialogue. It could pass if there was sensor to let the user know there is still dirt around.

      • Highway says:

The significance of the talking was entirely to set up the Kamen Rider joke.

        • BlackBriar says:

Oh! I never saw that. No wonder I didn’t recognize the reference.

  4. Liza says:

Poor Tamao. There is no way she can get into Mahiro’s life with all of the crazies he has around him. Keep trying girl! You can do it!

What I found really odd was the part when Kuune was uh….saying hello to Kuuko. Like…everyone was just watching. And Mahiro didn’t even bat an eye.

  5. BlackBriar says:

The hurtful thing about people giving advice, especially when it concerns love, is that it backfires for them personally. Tamao should get some attention for herself because it’s saddening that she’s helping others but is getting left out. I see her in the same miserable fix as Sakurasou’s Nanami only that she doesn’t have to put in much effort to stay positive.

Mahiro’s honing his fork throwing skills and as usual, they’re frightening. The whole situation is facepalm worthy. Here we have three aliens/deities capable of causing utter chaos and destruction yet they cower in fear of one kid who uses a utensil as a weapon. Their expressions while he was buying more forks for him and his mom was priceless.

A kid like Mahiro is hard to understand and his tsundere wall has gotten tougher since the end of last season. He whispers if Nyaruko wasn’t so forceful, he would consider being with her but the thing is he wouldn’t budge at all if she doesn’t move first. She shouldn’t be the one to shoulder the blame.

Ah, what a surprise. No wonder Kuuko is the way she is with Nyaruko. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I’m surprised the mother didn’t do anything to stop Kuune from groping Kuuko in order not to pervert Mahiro’s mind. However, she did stop Kuune from using explicit dialogue.

    • Highway says:

Well, I notice that Tamao’s advice to Nyarlko is pretty much exactly what Mahiro doesn’t like, at least as it’s interpreted by Nyarlko. I also think there’s a lot of room for Nyarlko to be suggestive, be clear on what she wants, and not be crazy and forceful about it. The problem is that Nyarlko can’t pull it back from 11 to 6or 7, where it needs to be most of the time. And even the times she does, she gets goaded into escalating it.
