Anime North 2013 Coverage

Keeping it cool at AN

Another year, another con. This year’s Anime North was better than last year’s for me simply because I didn’t spend over 2 hours in line trying to get my ticket (which I had pre-bought, by the way). Things were much more organized this year. Now, you would think cutting down all that time waiting in line would mean I had more opportunities to go to a bunch of events, but I somehow did less than last year. Sorry if my coverage isn’t as broad as usual. I just kinda hung out in the dealer’s room and squandered away my life savings. This post is mostly to show off the pretty cosplayers :3

Panels and Viewings

I actually didn’t attend any panels this year since I just didn’t have the time. I don’t know where it all went! However, the hotel where they have all the panels and anime viewings is a godsend for when you’re tired from walking around. I watched some Tiger & Bunny, Steins;Gate, Children Who Chase Lost Voices, and Totally Lame Anime After Dark. The last one is an amazing 2 hour block of specially selected clips from really bad anime. Derpy anime, lulzy anime, poorly-dubbed anime…you name it. I went last year and laughed my ass off, so I made sure to go again. It’s such a popular event it takes up two giant rooms and plays on two screens. If you’re going to AN, this is one of those things that you really have to go to. It’s at the end of the day too, and you’ll be dying to sit down and relax by then. Next year I’ll try to get around to more panels.

I got to play with snakessss

I spent a lot more than I wanted to, but I can’t say I’m unhappy with what I got. I tend to buy a lot of clothes and jewellery from the craft section. I find that the posters, bookmarks, buttons etc. are usually the same pieces every year, but the crafts section almost always has a bunch of new stuff.

On a side note, they got rid of the wrestling (I don’t even know why they had wrestling to begin with) and replaced it with…snakes. You can now play with snakes, lizards, and all manner of reptiles as long as you want. If you cosplay as someone like Soul Eater’s Medusa then that would be perfect for taking photos. There was also a girl dressed as Faye Valentine doing some Cirque-du-Soleil type stuff on a hoop suspended from the ceiling, so they’ve really changed what goes on in there. It’s still eclectic and doesn’t really relate to anime, but at least it’s better than wrestling.

The stuff I bought: Show ▼

Blogger Meet-ups

Plugging time! I met up with Krizzlybear (@CureKrizzly) for lunch and we talked about the panels he did. He was part of 4 different panels, which is pretty incredible. As much as I love talking about anime, I don’t know if I could host a live discussion without getting tongue-tied. Amazing! I also ran into Orange-sama (@MasterOrange) , bobbierob (@bobbierob), table (@table4545) and some others (if I forgot you, I’m sorry). We just chatted for a bit before I had to run off and spend EVEN MORE MONEY. It was still nice seeing everyone though – especially some new faces!

Photoshoots and Cosplay

SAM_1261

This year I actually went to the Type-Moon photoshoot. I just cosplay for fun and don’t claim to be any good at it (for example, I can’t and do not sew). It’s just cool to wear a costume and meet up with other characters for the same show. I was Lisa Lisa on Friday and found a Susie Q and Caesar to pose with, and that made me really happy too. Cosplaying is fun! Unfortunately, no one could predict that the area the Type-Moon photoshoot was going to be so windy. I may have flashed half of the convention…Sigh. Other than that and photographers almost getting hit by a car, it was fun! (Thank you, tall boyfriend, for taking photos above the crowd for almost all of the photoshoots. Credit where credit is due, right?)

If you want the full album of photos from the con, it’s on my Facebook. If you don’t have me on there, then it’s on a public album here.

Looks like fun, OC~ maybe one day I’ll join you there (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

…And I have deep, profound respect for that Mondo cosplayer for however they got their hair/wig/whatever to stay like that.

    • Liza says:

Yessssss. Come Karakuri. We can talk otome all day. 😀 But knowing me I will probably see you and not connect that it is you.

      • Karakuri says:

Ahaha I had no idea you were in Toronto xD well, if I ever go to AN, I’ll let you know~

        • Overcooled says:

See? You have so many people to meet. COME TO AN!

…and yeah, I have no idea how they pulled off that wig. Especially considering how insanely windy it was that weekend.

        • Liza says:

I’m actually not. Lol. XD I’m from Jersey. I just go up to Canada for AnimeNorth every year.

  2. Liza says:

O_O I WAS WALKING RIGHT BEHIND YOU. ON FRIDAY. The only reason I remember that was because I thought it was you but I was too afraid to go up and be all, “OVERCOOLED!”

And I went to the Type-Moon shoot too..for about five seconds as the Doubletree was wayyy too much of a wind tunnel and my poor Marie hat could not handle it and I was cold. XD

    • Kyokai says:

      AWWW, KAWAAAAAAAAAAIII!

    • Overcooled says:

Marie from Persona 4 Golden right? With the rainbow arm socks? Omg I saw you twice lol. Once in the artist’s alley on the way to the dealer’s room and again at the Type-Moon shoot for a bit. I swear this happened last year too – we saw each other but nothing happened ahaha. I never know what the commenters are being so I can’t go up to them myself, so just say hi next time! 😀

Yeah, for some reason that area turned out to be the most windy area of the con. I actually left a bit early too because I was hungry and tired of flashing people ^^;. My boyfriend said his fingers were frozen from taking photos by the end of it.

      • Liza says:

Yup! 😀 Marie-chan! Haha it’s weird how we keep seeing each other. I know I saw you on Friday when I was wearing my Camellia Gumi cosplay(WITH A MONSTER PETTICOAT OF DOOM). I really wished the Type-Moon shoot had been on a different day since I was hosting the Atlus photoshoot so I could not bring out my Fate/Extra Heroine until Sunday.

Well next year I personally know I am probably cosplaying Caster from F/E along with Hollow Forest Marie/whatever-character from P5 if it is announced. So it will probably be easier to find me since I have all my plans set up already. XD

  3. BlackBriar says:

Nice coverage, OC. That Ja’far cosplayer looked very convincing. The snake kind of suits you in the photo. I have a question. Do you cosplay a different character every convention or do it about two times before switching over? I remembered a photo of you as a female Izaya Orihara.

    • Overcooled says:

My mom said that Ja’far was the cutest one at the con when I showed her the photos hehe.

This is the first time I’ve reused a costume. I don’t really have a rule for this thing. Last year I was Rin but missed the Type-Moon photoshoot so this year I reused the costume so I could actually attend it. =w= I don’t think I’ll reuse the female Izaya costume because my red contact lenses have dried up :/

  4. skylion says:

Totally Lame Anime after Dark sounds like my kind of event. Looks like you had fun 🙂

    • Overcooled says:

It was glorious. You’d love it! Are there any anime cons around where you live?

      • skylion says:

Ohayocon has been the top con of the region for many many years, and I attended sporadically in the mid 90s, and early to mid 2000s.
Please forgive the addled brain of this middle aged bishie, but my memories are just a wash of colour and sound. Except for the time my then GF dressed me head to toe in Gothloli attire. I didn’t go for the costume contests, just wandered the dealer’s room, collecting stares. Pics or it didn’t happen. I didn’t take any, she did, but we broke up long ago….This is such a sad tale.

      • skylion says:

And yeah, the snakes are awesome, but the girl is much much more awesome.

  5. Ceyrai says:

Ahhh… Jealous of people who get to go to these things, as always. DX I love the supah kawaii merchandise! And the bookmarks! And the baby… argh, yes, I’d like a baby just for the sole purpose of dressing her up I might make a bad mom one day lol

    • Overcooled says:

It’s so fun I’m tempted to fly to the states and do it all again for upcoming cons!

Don’t worry, our babies are gonna be so cool when we dress them up. =w=

  6. Gecko says:

So jealous… I would so do that to my baby (why anyone would let me have a baby is beyond me.) And those snakes suit you.

Although I think Staryu & Starmie are missing Misty… I would probably end up as a really lazy Pokemon cosplay if I were to ever attend a con.

    • Overcooled says:

Both you and BB think the snake suits me…maybe I should get one as a pet.

Actually, a wandering Misty posed with them right after taking the photo. Lazy pokemon cosplays are the way to go: everyone knows Pokemon and it’s easier than a full-blown cosplay.

      • BlackBriar says:

Both you and BB think the snake suits me…maybe I should get one as a pet.

Maybe it’s because we think it goes well with your post description. A snake sounds like it would go along nicely with it. 😛

  7. Alynn says:

Yeaaaaaah AN! This year I was over ambitious and I wore three cosplays (and made 7 in total). Friday was Chihiro/Sen (Spirited Away), Saturday was Motochika Chosokabe (Samurai Warriors 3), and Sunday was Date Masamune (Sengoku Basara). I had the fortune to pose with the Yukimura and Keiji you took a picture of, hehe (with an Ieyasu as well).

The wind was HORRIBLE! On Saturday parts of my cosplay almost flew away, it was the worst.

Wrestling was still a thing this year apparently! I saw some pics and I have no idea where they moved it to.

    • Liza says:

The wind was even worse on Friday. >__>

And they moved the wrestling to the back next to the autograph place.

      • Liza says:

-_- What in the world happened to the rest of my post?

      • Overcooled says:

@Alynn: Oh my gosh, that’s a loooootttt. I actually saw you on Sunday when I was leaving! I saw an Ieyasu with Date and other Sengoku Basara characters in a grassy area by Harvey’s, but by the time I got there you all sat down. I didn’t want to bug you guys so I gave up lol.

AN was oddly cold this year. I used to complain about the heat but this year I was shivering instead of sweating

@Liza: omg they kept the wrestling? WHYYYY?

        • Alynn says:

yeaaaa omg. I was completely swamped with making cosplays this month! I wanted to cry everyday, but it was worth it in the end!

  8. Sushi says:

I should go to one of these…

  9. Kyokai says:

I am so proud of you for attending that Type-Moon shoot and rocking the Rin cosplay! <3

Though, I loved your Lisa Lisa too. :3

    • Overcooled says:

Aww thanks, Kyo! I was hoping they’d include some other Type-Moon shows so I could get some nice shots for you but it was all Fate/Zero, Fate/Stay Night etc. stuff. Ah well, it was still really fun.

  10. berrish17 says:

    Lol starmie and staryu!!!!

I spy Sekai ichi hatsukoi Ritsu and Takano-san <3 <3

    • Overcooled says:

…I just noticed that they’re smiling even though the red gem blocks their face. That’s really sweet :3

  11. Soul says:

I wish lived in US 🙁

  12. Will says:

Un-lurking to say that I was there too. I saw a couple of Rin, but I’m pretty sure I saw you, I just didn’t know it was you.

Next time you guys do something in Canada, ping me so we can meet up or something.

    • Overcooled says:

You were? Wow, I had no idea. I thought you were in Quebec! If you’re there next year too we can meet up for sure.

  13. Cybersteel says:

    nice

  14. Moni Chan says:

I wish every weekend was AN I would be so broke. not like I’m not right now
