Storytime with Grandma Nyarlko

It’s storytime with Grandma Nyarlko, kids!

Welcome to Haiyore! Nyarlko-san W, with the thrilling conclusion to the case of the Library Pilferers! Well, maybe it’s thrilling, we’ll have to see, won’t we? So what happened this week? And how did they deal with these guys that beat them like rented mules last time?

Wooooo! Time for another hilarious episode review of Haiyore! Nyaruko-san W on Metanorn with Highway of course.

A Typical Climax?

Sparkly

Highway // Nyarlko-san is a show that’s not afraid to put itself or its characters in the place of the audience. We saw that in episode one with Nyarlko introducing characters and reading descriptions right to the audience, while Mahiro wondered who she was talking to. In this episode, it’s Mahiro taking the part of the audience critic, and pointing out that the motivations of ALL the bad guys that they’ve fought have been pretty stupid. From wanting to have the best video game console to illegally exporting a lot of earth games and anime to just being jealous of your older sister, the bad guys have been pretty pathetic. And Mahiro wonders if these guys are going to be any better. Were they?

Smooth look

Of course they weren’t. It turns out that Zhar and Lloiger are guys from an Non-Government Organization (NGO) that’s trying to save endangered gods, but because the Space Alliance keeps improving the breeding of these endangered deities, their NGO is having trouble raising money! So their big idea was to take the special pencil and Heaven’s Memo-Pad from last week’s episode (that Mahiro conveniently pocketed, bad Mahiro!) and make up new rare deities to hawk as reasons for giving their organization money. Yeah, your reaction is about what mine was. So they summon up a giant gorilla and fight our heroes.

Nyarlko-san! Reference corner

nyaukooo fun (4)

Foshizzel // Last week seemed to be lacking in the references because we were dealing with a bit of story; however this time we actually have a nice handful! Starting off with a quick shout out to the members of Judgement from Railgun, along with that thanks to NyaruReferences the commenters pointed out several pokes from a game series called WILD ARMS XF and WILD ARMS 2nd IGNITION?! I have heard of WILD ARMS, but never really played them! Originally I thought they were poking fun at Sword Art Online because Mahiro’s black outfit reminded me of Kirito. Other than that we had some stuff from Death note, Yu Yu Hakusho, Dragon ball Z, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Rurouni Kenshin and a hilarious poke at Monty Python and the Holy Grail’s Holy, Hand Grenade of Antioch; however Nyaruko uses the Blasphemous Grenade? Damn that scene from the movie always cracks me up! Besides all of those we had the usual LoveCraft and various Kamen Rider references, but I was cracking up once the giant monkey appeared? I mean damn even the design was the same from Dragon Ball Z!

Full Power for Hastur!

Full Power

Highway // I’m torn on Hastur’s telepathic bishie form. He looked ok, but that pale skin and the never-moving-his-lips thing really took away from it. It was kind of cute that he wanted Mahiro to forget about that form, tho, just wanting to be that little brother that Mahiro liked last episode. But even with the combined power of Hastur, Kuuko, and Nyarlko, they couldn’t defeat the giant yellow (after it enraged) gorilla. It took Mahiro realizing he could erase it out of the book to make it go away. And to me that gorilla looked so much like Donkey Kong, I’m really surprised they never found a barrel for it to throw. And it was a bit funny that Nyarlko kept trying to skip to the end of the story… because that’s when the ‘happily ever after’ is!

It was a good enough finish to the story, but I didn’t really think this episode matched the expectations I had for laughs. So all-in-all I was a little disappointed, both with this episode and with the overall story arc. I like to see the group’s interactions with each other a lot more, so having it feel like there’s so much focus on the action took away from that.

While the references always keep me glued to the screen I can’t really say much about the overall story, but to be honest this episode focused more on a big fight against the bad guy of the week, but at least it was entertaining right? I did like that we finally saw the fighting form of Hastur even though it looked really dumb, so does that mean he has two personalities inside that head of his? Other than that I was shipping Kuko and Mahiro together after he caught her, but we all know she only desires Nyaruko’s heart and body and we had a new ending song and video complete with a sexy bunny cosplay with Nyaruko.

More Fun With Nyarlko!

This episode’s references brings it back to it’s First Series form; meaning most of it probably flew over a western audience members heads. The reference density was actually over 9000!

But despite that, it was a good laugh. As Highway says, Nyarlko points out the absurd notions the bad guys have. Which in itself is probably a meta-reference to any Mythos plotline!

I thought the staff did a great job with Hastur’s full transformation to the King in Yellow. “Please forget my face” No MASK!

    Good work, Team. Thanks.

Oh, forgot to mention. I thought they would have stretched out the final battle a bit more. Those erasers on mechanical pencils are so awful. I thought it would fall apart the more pressure Mahiro put on it. Oh well.

      • Highway says:

I never use the eraser on my mechanical pencils. So small, and they can’t help but advance the lead to ridiculous lengths…

      • Foshizzel says:

IKR? I use mechanical pencils for all of my paper drawings! I just hated sharpening normal pencils xD

    • Foshizzel says:

Those that don’t know DBZ will make me cry xD

Indeed those filler bosses are TERRIBLE and they fail at creating gods >.<

      • BlackBriar says:

I was thinking that it was more Dragon Ball GT going on this episode. The ape turning gold was a passage when Goku and Vegeta were going Super Saiyan 4.

        • Foshizzel says:

That is true I do remember that happening in that horrible GT series >.<

          • BlackBriar says:

I can only say things started getting good in Dragon Ball GT when the Baby Saga began. It was nothing but trash before that.

  2. TheVoid says:

The giant ape was obviously a Super Saiyan, especially when it turned Gold.

As for Hasturs face, it looks like he’s wearing a white mask that covers everything but the eyes.

  3. Liza says:

This episode was full of lols. Especially at the end when Mahiro erased the gorilla into oblivion. I was having the same reaction as him as he was staring at the eraser on the end. XD

As for Hastur’s other form, dang he went bishie! His outfit and white mask were very…odd I must admit. But whatever, that form is only temporary to cute little brother Hastur.

    • Foshizzel says:

I died laughing when Mahiro erase the monster ahaha such a hilarious scene and over powered eraser xD

The older Hastur was strange looking, but I think everyone likes the younger Hastur a bit more.

  4. BlackBriar says:

Always count on Nyaruko to cause sexual harassment even during something as crucial as a fight. This show sure is one that doesn’t take itself seriously and runs in all directions with its out-of-the-box unpredictability like Mahiro pointing the final episode indications.

References: Index, Sword Art Online, Blood-C (Old Ones), DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho (Nyaruko imitating Yusuke’s Spirit Gun). I’m sure there’s still more that hasn’t been figured out yet.

    • Foshizzel says:

Of course! Nyaruko always has to find time to put that into every damn episode and it cracks me up so much.

hahaha yeah this week was filled with all kinds of shounen anime references and I loved it xD
