Yeah I was shocked to see them take this new route, but I think it is just a way for the producers to throw in another story centered around Kotoura’s ESP powers? As for Moritani I am starting to think that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but that doesn’t answer why she is so freaked out…

I think Yuriko is working Haruka pretty masterfully with the “Oh, you shouldn’t have to tell the police” and then “Well, you could solve the crime!” followed immediately by “Nah, that’d be silly, you don’t have to do that.” Basically pushing, then pulling back, pushing again, pulling back, working Haruka slowly into the idea of solving the crime.
At first I thought that the criminal was the lady detective, because the person that Haruka walks by right as she has her vision in the previous episode is wearing a white shirt with rolled up sleeves, and has brown / black hair in a similar style. But looking at that again, I think the hair styles are different enough that they wouldn’t draw it that way if they’re supposed to be the same person.

Agreed Highway! Yuriko is probably waiting for Kotoura to get backed into a corner with only one way out, tell the police what you “saw” that day or go the guilt route? As in “If we don’t stop this person more students will get hurt.” I can easily see that.

The only way the police would believe Kotoura saying that is if she exposed the fact she can read minds. If that happens, they might find the person but they’ll blab it all to the press about how they did it and she might be isolated again because everyone would treat her as a freak. People are hardly accepting of those who are different from them.

Moritani, on the other hand, is pretty much the gorilla of the show. No tact, no touch, nothing except clumsy interfering and muscle. She’s the one who gets the rumors started about Haruka (which are not related to Haruka’s ESP, just that she encountered the attacker) by bringing it up in the class, and then trying to run off the other girls. She also has appointed herself the public morals committee with respect to Haruka and Manabe’s relationship. I don’t think it’s out of a lingering desire to get with Manabe, just her being meddlesome. I think what we see with Moritani is what she is. She just isn’t subtle.
Speaking of Manabe and Haruka’s relationship, I kind of like the internal conflict that Haruka goes through. Even though, as she says, they haven’t ‘officially’ confessed to each other, she still realizes that they’re a couple, and that she wants them to be a couple. Sure, she’s afraid that as high school juniors they’re a little young for going all the way, but part of her still wants to, because she truly likes him that way. So the “Whatever happens, happens!” line was great as she opened the door to who she thought was Manabe.

Yeah I don’t know what they are doing with the whole Moritani incident at the end of the episode, but they could spin that into Yuriko saying “If we don’t find the real criminal Moritani will go to jail.” Thus forcing Kotoura to talk to the police? I still would not be shocked that all of this friendship stuff with Kotoura was actually fake the entire time…then again that would be kind of silly…
I agree! It was funny to see Kotoura actually thinking about her and Manabe as a couple/non-couple because she is right they have not “officially” confessed to each other, but it is safe to say Kotoura knows Manabes answer 😉

So Haruka’s mother does still have some motherly instincts towards her daughter. I loved how Manabe pushed her mother buttons to bring that out of her. But then she still turned and walked away, passing up a chance to begin reconciling with Haruka.
As soon as Haruka read the criminal’s mind I was sure the ESP club was going to get into the crime solving business. Hopefully, they’ll all come out of it unharmed. But with the way this series swings between comedy and high drama you never know. Since the criminal targets teenage girls, we can be pretty sure that the girls and especially Haruka are the ones who are going to be in danger.
Is Manabe going to have the chance to be a real hero? Is he going to take the knife thrust meant for Haruka? Or is Yuriko going to take it out of guilt for pushing Haruka and the club into going after a dangerous criminal? Just two of the number of ways this could play out.

Well, if Manabe’s there, they’d need to really get the drop on him to hurt him, because he’s not exactly incapable. He did fight back after taking a few licks before.
One thing we don’t know is how the attacker gets the victims in the alley. It would seem to be something tougher to do than you think without a trick, so there’s gotta be a trick. I dunno, maybe it *is* the lady detective. I keep going back and forth on that.
I’m starting to think Kumiko is less outright angry at Haruka and more scared of her, and what she could do. I don’t think Kumiko has any big schemes going on (although I don’t put anything past that sleazy guy she was with), but she’s already had her life ruined through interaction with Haruka, being unable to handle the truth level that a girl with the ability to read your mind represents. I don’t think we’ll see any sort of tearful reunion, at most it would be a detente where the mere sight of Kumiko doesn’t make Haruka freeze in fear and indecision.

I was surprised to see Kotoura’s mom react that way! I guess she can’t deny her motherly instincts huh? I died laughing when she kicked Manabe though! That was so damn funny.
Yep I smelled that story line a mile a way! Kotoura and the ESP club turned into the all powerful jr detective club, oh man they could totally do a spin off series ahahah
Manabe to the rescue! I can see both ways working using guilt to push Kotoura into talking to the cops and the whole Moritani thing at the end only adds fuel to the fire.

The first half was dramatic and the show hasn’t been so since, say, the first episode. I have two possibilities as to who’s behind the attacks. One is that woman detective who happens to be the one who crossed paths with Kotoura last episode and the other could be another one of the students.
Manabe has some odd expectations of people. Who wants people to assume that you’re thinking something dirty? He’s hopeless when Kotoura’s grandfather intervenes and the guy calls just to burn him about not scoring with his granddaughter. I can’t figure out what his angle is.
Hiyori and her demon mask. Whew, didn’t see that coming. I think my heart almost skipped a beat seeing that the first time.

I think that Manabe’s got a go-to, and sometimes he goes to the well a little too often. And when it’s pointed out, he adjusts, like when Haruka says “No, now’s not the time.”
I think the show’s really clear that throughout, Manabe’s a good guy. I mean, let’s be real: He’s a 16-17 year old guy. What’s he gonna be thinking about most often? There ya go. And is he going to be the best at understanding the attitude in the room? Heck no. He’s just got it worse than others because his thoughts become the same as saying it out loud with Haruka there. Maybe his reaction to that is to actually say more out loud?

I’m still watching Kotoura-san, I have no idea why, but I just find that girl so precious. Also, I think Manabe and Kotoura relationship is pretty cute.
Still can’t stand her crazy mother and I like that the grandfather is pretty cold to her. I hate that Kotoura blames herself for her mother’s idiocy.
As to who is doing the attacks, my money is on mom’s new boyfriend.

I’m glad the grandfather is cold to the mother because it means he’s very disappointed with her selfish decisions. I’m sure as a child, the mother did things that were embarrassing to the grandfather and caused social problems but he still stood by her side. What gives her the right to just pack up and abandon her only child who was growing up not knowing what ability she has? She deserves every dirty look thrown at her.

I’m pretty sure she’s Zenzou’s daughter. She’s calls him “father”, the two speak to each other in a very familiar fashion and up to now, no one has talked about Kotoura’s father as if he ceased to exist. No one really cared that he left but Zenzou did everything he could to change the mother’s mind and get her to stay.

That’s what I’m thinking too, but that does make it slightly odd that Haruka is a Kotoura. I would guess that it’s more common in Japan to keep a family name that is important and successful rather than just change because of marriage?

I always wondered about Japanese child endangerment laws. How is it, in all these shows, parents can simply up and leave their young child, simply because of their own inadequacies or issues that they conveniently place on the young shoulders of their impressionable child? I was always interested in the fact that a lot of shows show the children simply living in an apartment and making their own way even at 14-15 years old. At 14 I was too young to get a job and even if I did have one, I still couldn’t afford an apartment and wouldn’t be old enough to sign the lease anyway. Does Japan just not have a DCFS or foster care?

Well, 90% of anime characters are high school students and most of them are portrayed as independant individuals. They are even shown doing various kinds of work in their own own schools. I guess the Japanese are trying to show their children are capable of looking out for themselves. In OreShura, the parent of the lead male fell in love with someone they met and left him alone in the house months ago and he managed himself rather skillfully.

In similar situations to Haruka’s, there are plenty of people in the US, for example, who leave their kids with their own parents. I think it’s also important to remember that high school kids that we see in anime are generally one year older than we might think (well, at least for me). I tend to think that first years are the same as 9th graders, but they’re actually 10th graders. The 2nd years that we see most high school anime about are 16 or 17 years old, well on the way to adulthood.
And the mere act of giving people responsibility makes them more responsible. It wasn’t that long ago in the history of humanity that 13 or 14 was a typical age when you stopped being a dependent, got married, and started your own life. There’s definitely a point to the argument that western societies have “child-ized” much of adolescence, resulting in decreasing abilities to deal with the world, and putting off that time when teenagers actually learn to be adults, to the detriment of all.
I would say that at 14 or 15 you probably would have been able to learn to not kill yourself or burn down the house. And if you had been planning on doing that for the years leading up to it, then you would have prepared.

Its not that they can’t take care of themselves, I’m just amazed at how little the law gets involved. A parent who simply abandons their child on a whim, is guilty of child endangerment and will get jail time. Also, maybe I’m just used to US age requirements, where until you are at most 17, you would become a ward of the state and placed into foster care if you had no other relatives.
And I am using the quoted ages of anime children that I see, (everything from 4-16) and some how no one cares that the child has been abandoned. The child just magically knows how to go grocery shopping, pay bills, tuition, and rent. And no one finds that strange? In today’s day and age, at least where I live, the law would have gotten involved long ago.

Well, I’d argue there’s a difference between abandoned and ‘living on their own’ with the full support and consent of their parents. Most of the kids that we see are in not really ‘abandoned’ circumstances. Kotoura was left with her grandfather. Rikka and Touka were left with their grandparents. Eita was taken in by Saeko, but comes pretty close to ‘abandoned’ (we don’t know if he gets any support from his parent, but I don’t think so).
The only characters from shows I’ve watched that were really ‘abandoned’ are Momozono Nanami from Kamisama Hajimemashita and Hayate from Hayate no Gotokou. And maybe Kidou Eita.
(I have huge problems with the US “Child Protection” ideas that I won’t go into)
