AFA Malaysia 2012 Coverage – Part I

It was a dream come true for Malaysia

As promised, I am back to cover more of Malaysia’s ACG Conventions. As I have mentioned in my previous post, C2AGE, this time I’m going to cover Anime Festival Asia Malaysia. AFA is one of the most popular conventions ever held in South East Asia and many fans of different countries travel all the way to Singapore just to attend this awesome event. After years of organizing in Singapore, the committee decided to not just have AFA in Singapore but in Malaysia as well (recently they announced one in Indonesia too). AFA MY was held for 2 days (Saturday and Sunday) in PWTC (Putra World Trade Centre). Two halls were used for the event, one for stage events and concert, while another for the festival. I attended Day 1 only so I’ll just cover Day 1, while  T.K will cover Day 2. Before we get to Day 1, let’s take a look at Day 0, which was held on Friday.

Day 0

Just a sneak peak before the actual festival

Day 0 was held in public as an open press conference. A ticketing booths was also available for people to buy their tickets early without the fuss of lining up on the actual day.

Opening speech by head honcho of SOZO

Stage appearance of KANAME and the SP Cats (Tasha & Miyuko)

Stage appearance of the meido and shitsuji

From left, FLOW, Kotoko, SEA A

Day 1

I reached AFA in the afternoon due to morning classes (the burden of a college student…) Took me some time to understand the situation and where the hall is. Anyway, I still got some photos and information through my senpais on the events that I missed so I will still be able to cover them.

The ticketing crowd in the afternoon. Click for more// Show ▼

Forget about lining up. We charge through in Rider style!!! YAHHH!!!

Stage Events:

009 RE: CYBORG Talk by Tomohiko Ishii. He talked about the characters and showed a trailer of the show

SP Cats Talkshow and Stage Appearance.

Danny interviewed them about their daily lives and how they got into cosplay.

Miyuko and Tasha. Dat sexy BRS!!! Click for more// Show ▼

Culture Japan talk by Danny Choo. He gave an introduction about Culture Japan and how he ended up starting it. He also talked about his current (Moekana and Mirai’s anime) and future (Moekanji) projects.

Mirai Airlines. Wow…

Don’t we all agree? Click for more // Show ▼

The Ultimate Madoka. There are currently two in the world. One in Japan and the other was in AFA Malaysia. Aren’t we blessed to see her? Pre-orders will be opened later this year.

Saber with her new bike. Kiritsugu’s figma (there’s hardly any male figmas)

IBRS that comes with the blu-ray of the TV series. The price literally makes me insane.

Summary video and a little shot of the stage. I love the BGM.

Let’s give a clap to our MC

Check out my album for the complete Stage Event photos.

Booths:

I was disappointed with the booths at AFA. The experience was not as satisfying as Comic Fiesta. I couldn’t find any BRS things to buy except for a poster that I had. Most booths were just there to display figures and merchandises.

Culture Japan Booth. Look at all that Mirai goodies.

Super jelly of that BMW Itasha.

The Ultimate Madoka. The light makes her so stunning. Click for more // Show ▼

Well it’s pretty obvious that there were lots of figure displays. The let down of the festival would be the lacking of sale booths for the large number of people. Check out my Festival album for more photos.

Super Anisong Live Concert:

They used the same hall as the Stage Events for the concert

My Glowsticks

As I am not a rule breaking fan, there aren’t any more photos

Yes, I’m sorry to say that I don’t have any photos from the concert because there was a guard doing his duty near where I was standing. I’ll just give you the setlist of each artist of Day 1. To those who went to Day 1 concert, correct me if I got any song wrong.

Maon Kurosaki

  • Magic∞world and Memories Last (To Aru Majutsu no Index II)
  • Kimi to Taiyou ga Shinda hi (High School of The Dead)
    • A few more from her other albums

Aimi

  • LIVE for LIFE ~Ookamitachi no Yoru~ (Ben-To)
  • Tenshi no Clover and Manatsu no Photograph (Astarotte no Omocha)
  • Sakurairo no Kisetsu (Da Capo S.S) and Hare Hare Yukai (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu) as surprise covers

Kalafina

  • Magia (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)
  • Lacrimosa and Kagayaku Sora no Shijima ni wa (Kuroshitsuji)
  • Sprinter and Kizuato (Kara no Kyoukai)
  • Hikari no Senritsu (Sora no Woto)
  • Ongaku and Destination Unknown (Studio albums)
  • To the beginning (Fate/Zero)

This was my first time attending a Live concert so I didn’t know what to prepare for it. I simply bought two glowsticks and went in. I got a good spot where I had quite a clear view of the stage thanks to my friends, who I bumped into while lining up to enter the hall. I had a good time listening and cheering for Maon Kurosaki and Aimi since I know a few of their songs. Then I went all crazy over Kalafina. I cheered till I lost my voice, while waving my glowsticks, jumped up and down and most importantly enjoyed every moment of them. I never regretted spending my money for the tickets and I really appreciated the fact that this is my first concert.

Cosplay Photos:

Since this long post is already full of photos plus I’m already lazy to choose some pics to put here, just go over to my cosplay album. All credits goes to my seniors (about 6 of them) for providing their set of photos (I actually ripped it of their FB LOL) and there’s a few of the cosplayers, who are my seniors.

Haul from AFA:

Two T-shirts, Anbu Mask, Glowsticks, TCG Card Storage and Card sleeves

End Note: FYI, actually I bought a new camera the day before AFA (thx Mum) so my coverage photos are looking so much better compared to C2AGE’s (cookie for those who notice before reading this). That is all for Day 1 of AFA. Up next, we’ll be having T.K’s coverage of Day 2. By the way, I’m not done yet. There’s coverage for Culture Japan Night by me as well. Jia ne~. Toori rolling out (for now).

There is a DVD version but without the IBRS.

Good luck in getting a better luck.

  3. Rakkyo says:

    ooooh yeaaahhhh.

It was my first live concert too lol.
Kalafina was sooo amazing. Heck, Aimi was off the stage for a few seconds and people started chanting for Kalafina already.

btw for the Kalafina song list, they didn’t sing Kagayaku Sora no Shijima ni wa, Kizuato or Hikari no Senritsu.

    • Toori-chan says:

Ooh you bought the VIP ticket? Now I am officially super jelly.

Yeah. I was only sure that there was about 9 songs on the list. I couldn’t remember much because I was in total hype mode.

    • Rakkyo says:

The VIP ticket is worth every cent I tell you. XD

Let me just help you with the list there.

Thanks for covering Day 1 Toori-chan! Was expecting more details from 009 RE:Cyborg though, since I missed the talkshow. XD

I share your disappointment in booth variety, though I’ll say they brought us more limited edition goodies than I expected. (Good Smile Racing shirts and FLOW’s Black & White shirts). Nearly bought PVC Homura (Rm300) and Evangelion Unit Mk 06 (Rm48.90) but resisted and ran away before the urge became too great. So I ended up not buying anything at all from the event, I’m such a cheapskate. ;D

    • HC Yeap says:

The story is in year 2013 where cases of skyscrapers get blowed up frequently and simultaneously. A team of 9 people or you may call, cyborgs are sent to deal with the subject matter. The team consisted of peoples of different nationality such as: America, Russia, France, German, Africa, England, China and last but not least Japan.

Additionally, the anime is animated with full 3DCG. It means it’s a 3DCG movie like Final Fantasy VII but with cell shading to have the “anime look”.

Just some CTRL+C and CTRL+V work from my notebook 😛

  5. Kyokai says:

OMG, Fate/Zero goodies. HHHNNNGGGGGGGG. SO WANT!

Except for the goodies part, I think this was a very good show. Also, Kalafina live. Aaaah.

  6. cresando says:

Personally, i’m much more enjoy on the day 2 especially the concert. Kotoko was amazing but flow was simply epic.

  7. BlackBriar says:

I can only imagine the number of people traveling from other countries just to attend this. Malaysia sure attracts a lot of dedicated anime fans. You guys are awesome.

I like how well The Ultimate Madoka figure was shown. Whoever made it deserves recognition. BRS and Fate Zero stuff, must get. Saber with her new bike is the most appealing.

    • Toori-chan says:

I don’t know about people travelling to Malaysia for AFA but I do know that there are quite the number of foreigners, who are studying in Malaysia, came to AFA MY. Malaysia itself has lots of dedicated fans that’s what makes us awesome~

I really love the figure but it cost around RM600. It is a bit too much for me.

  8. Tofu says:

    T____________T so jelly… so so jelly…

  9. The_Magus_Killer says:

I should have gone there and cosplayed as Kiritsugu. That Kirigitsugu figma. I want it. XD

  10. Miyamoto says:

I was there on both days…>W<
Me and my buddy have to wait 3 hours to enter the Moe Moe Kyun Cafe, but its worth it.Went i enter the cafe.
the first things that pop ups from my mine is the "food price".It was so expensive ,dammit!!
But after our maid comes in ,i turned jelly.
Our Maid is Yunie-Chan.And SHE IS SOO FUCKING HOT!!!
