Ano Natsu de Matteru – 03

“1 … 2 … um … 4 …”

“Where did everyone go.” :3

Ano Natsu keeps pulling me back in, even if Kaito isn’t exactly the best lead in my eyes. I’m looking forward to whatever twists the show might have for us this week!

fufufufu.

The episode picks up from the “kiss scene” Ichika and Kaito shared last week. For Ichika, it was a way of saving him from a strange disease, but for Kaito it was something … fantasy worthy. In his dream Kaito tries to confess his feelings, but Ichika responds with insults and belittling remarks, masochist much?

Back in reality Ichika tries to wake Kaito for school, but he insists on not going because he’s “sick”. Ichika mistakes this as the disease from before and calls Rinon to help, to no avail. Why? Because Kaito is perfectly fine at the time … physically at least. At school Ichika shows Lemon the notes and asks for help. She tells Ichika that he’s only playing sick because there’s someone he doesn’t want to see. Misunderstanding number one, begin!

Elsewhere, Kanna, Tetsurou and Miu agree they remember next to nothing about last night. (Dynamite must have been super effective.) Tetsruou gives Kanna an envelope from Lemon which turns out to be a shot of her in a seductive pose. I’m sure you can imagine how someone like Kanna would react to that.

Ichika’s misunderstanding begins to unfold as she begins to believe her secret (being an alien) was revealed to Kaito. And what better way to show the consequences of this then through another fantasy? In this one Kaito calls some FBI dudes to capture Ichika for being from another planet. (Kaito wouldn’t do that. ): … would he?) In his bed Kaito’s own misunderstanding begins to unfold as he believes he actually confessed and was rejected by Ichika. FANTASY, GO! In this one the group laughs over Kaito’s confession.

K-KAITO! How could you!?

Tetsurou convinces Kanna to visit Kaito by harassing her about Ichika. After she leaves Miu and Tetsurou share a moment and Miu wonders if he’s okay with Kanna being so close to Kaito. Before she can finish her thought, Lemon interrupts. (Curse your timing, Lemon!) She pulls out a huge video camera and decides it’s time for some filming.

Kanna visits Kaito, and after a little talking he invites her inside. He quickly realizes that Ichika might catch him with a girl in his room and decides it’s best to hang out somewhere else. Ichika notices the two on the train and instantly thinks Kaito has already told Kanna of her secret.

Kanna and Kaito walk around a mall-like area and visit some stores as the others watch on from a distance. Miu pulls on Tetsruou’s sleeve, and after getting his attention they leave to get drinks. Miu, worried for Tersurou, says she thinks getting involved with Kanna/Kaito’s relationship will only lead to him getting hurt. However, he states he’s only helping out a childhood friend.

Kaito talks to Kanna about his reason for staying home from school and replies by saying it’s about Ichika. They share a bit of a friendly moment over their talk about Ichika, but before Kanna can make a move towards approaching Kaito, it happens. And by it, I mean LEMON HAPPENS. Always picking the perfect moments to show up out of nowhere, that’s Lemon for ya’! Kanna is embarrassed by Lemon for being filmed and she runs off chasing her.

Running away is always the best option …

Ichika runs into Kaito on his way out, but because being Kaito is suffering, he runs away embarassed. Ichika chases after him. The two end up in a park or something talking about their misunderstandings, thinking the other is talking about the one they’re … thinking. (Oh misunderstandings, how I’ve missed you!) They come to realize their “misunderstandings” were two completely different things from the start and decide to keep them a secret. Kaito kind of fails at it though since he already mentioned being rejected by someone. They end up spending the rest of the day together.

Later on Ichika questions Kaito on who he’s interested in, quickly denying Miu and Kanna. However, when she mentions her own name Kaito is speechless. Nice job, Kaito, it was totally indirect, but hey, it’s a start!

Preview: W-What!? Rinon is in danger! I-It can’t be!

RINON DUMP:

ALL MY D’AWWWWS.

Where can I even begin with this episode, it was out of this world! (fufufu) Finally, I’m starting to feel … emotionally attached to the characters. Love polygons (or whatever you’d like to call them) usually rope me in right away, but up until now I just couldn’t get into it as much as I wanted to with the characters being the way they were. Episode 3 quickly changed that around and I felt as if we got to see many new sides to everyone, likable sides that kept me wondering how they would each play into each other’s relationships. Kaito was still good ol’ Kaito, but at least he had some initiative this time and for once I actually sort of like him.

One of my favorite parts of this episode, surprisingly, was the interaction between Miu and Tetsurou. Until now I was a little iffy on where some character’s feelings laid, actually I should say “character”, since it was really only Tetsurou throwing me off. It seems, at least from Miu’s point of view, that Tetsurou may have fallen for his childhood friend Kanna. Miu was making me so depressed, I felt so bad watching her try and get the attention of the guy she obviously likes. I was on the verge of  yelling “GO FOR IT MIU!” at my screen, but that’d … probably be weird. I feel that she might simply be misunderstanding Tetsurou’s position. I could be wrong, but I think he really is simply supporting Kanna as a friend without any other kind of intention behind it.

As for the other trio, I’m starting to feel as if Kaito only has eyes for Ichika, and not Kanna. I hate using this term, but Kanna seems to be “friend-zoned” at the moment. For instance, Kaito was so easily able to ask to hang out with her alone and even talk a bit about his feelings without any wild fantasies about anything romantic happening or something like that. Their closeness, at least to me, feels like a comfortable and close friendship, as well as loving, but not the kind of love Kanna wants Kaito to reciprocate. I hate to say it, but I’m also starting to like the idea of Kaito and Ichika being together. I was all for Kanna in the beginning, but Ichika and Kaito are really nice together. The entire scene towards the end in the park (or whatever that was) was really cute and I love how they were so concerned about the misunderstandings between each other. They’ve also been alluding to the discussion about the place Ichika wants to find. I’m really curious, but I get the feeling it’ll have some gloomy stories behind it.

Episode 2 was quite funny, but episode 3 is hilarious. It’s good to know they won’t be letting us down on the “com” of our rom-com. Fantasies were all over the place this episode, and they’re definitely becoming one of my favorite parts of the show, but Lemon still reigns supreme!

Why does everyone have strange day dreams?

    • skylion says:

      …aftereffects of Dynamite Drink….

The strange day dreams they had prior to consumption of said Drink are beforeaffects.

      Powerful stuff that Dynamite.

It’s about infatuation. At this point we can see that Taito has this with Ichika. Ichika Fascination to borrow from another anime (poor poor Araragi-kun…you’ve got a lot to learn). There is a lot to be said of the “friend zone”. For one thing, friends respect, trust, and abide by one another. They may not understand everything one one to the other, but they are patient.

I’m reminded of the relationships that Toradora built up. Ryuuji to Minori and Taiga to Kitamura-kun. That was infatuation. Those feelings had their due course. But what was left was the deep and abiding friendship that Ryuuji and Taiga shared over that short span of about nine months. It was hard earned, wasn’t it?

I’m seeing a similar track going on here. In time, I may be proven wrong. Don’t underestimate the “friend zone”. Surprising things can and will happen there.

Good comparison! I just watched Toradora recently so it’s still fresh in my mind, and I agree that their relationships (Ryuuji/Minori and Taiga/Kitamura) definitely did feel like infatuation rather than love.

Watching Taiga and Ryuuji bond was so adorable though. >__<

Cute >.< Does everyone love Rinon? Good cause that's all I've been commenting about in similar Ano Natsu posts XD

I enjoyed this episode. It was really pushing the situational irony – the “sit” part of “sitcom” hard with the misunderstanding that lasted throughout the episode. Loved the cliffhanger-ish ending. Hope this means things start getting serious between them next episode.

Also, Yukari Tamura voiced Remon was wonderful, with that 8mm and huge lenses. A lovable prankster.

    • Hawthorne says:

I hope so too, I love the silly moments between Ichika and Kaito, but if things do get serious between them it would mean we might get some great confrontations with other characters like Kanna or Tetsurou. (And maybe more misunderstandings?)

  5. Reaper says:

So many misunderstandings, but so much fun for us, from both Kaito and Ichika 🙂 and throwing in Lemon’s ‘artistic’ skills for blackmailing on Chie-clone Tanigawa, we would have just a lighthearted anime about high school kids!

Luckily, it’s deeper than that, and that is what I like to see. We already saw the smooth surface begin to crack last ep, and this time Mio threw a hammer at it with her outright declaration to Tetsurou (and not so secret feelings of her own, though he doesn’t know that yet). Whilst our leads are landed themselves into an embarrassing spot of trouble with Ichika’s rather innocent question hitting the spot, whilst from all of this, Lemon’s part is probably the biggest troll since Kyubey.

    • Hawthorne says:

“Artistic” … yeah, that’s it. :3 fufufufu Lemon is so devious, I feel like she’s the one setting everything in motion, bringing everyone together to interact. Plus, she seems to have a good sense of the relationships between everyone.

  6. Foshizzel says:

Woooo great episode! And yeah I am now attached to some characters now like Miu, Lemon and Kana! The two main ones are alright…I don’t really like Kaito to much…but I will grow to like him soon.

So basically Kaito shot down any possible feelings for Kanna! He answered so fast…poor girl ah well at least she didn’t hear him say that xD

Ichika dawww so cute! I died laughing when she ran to chase after Kaito…I guess those two are alright together even thou I still support Kanna x Kaito <3 <3

Could we ship Tetsurou with Miu I wonder? But I will cheer for Tetsurou! Cause he is awesome..

    • Hawthorne says:

I’m still supporting Kanna x Kaito. Go Kanna! xD I like Ichika, she’s so funny trying to hide her alien-ness, but Kanna is just so cute when she’s around Kaito.

Tetsurou and Miu would be so good together, I hope he realizes she likes him soon.

  7. Kyokai says:

I’m finally taking some interest. This anime is all about Anaru getting it on with Jintan. Srsly. xD

  8. FirstImpulse says:

Awesome ep. I have pretty much the same feelings as Hawthorne! XD
But one thing, in Ichika’s fantasy Kaito didn’t call the FBI, he called the MIB. The Men In Black. I love American action movie references in anime. :3 lol

    • Hawthorne says:

So that’s what they were! I was confused when he said that, but it makes a lot of sense now. >__< That's a really awesome reference, I wish I would have caught on. XD

  9. BlackBriar says:

That was a pretty cold delivery Ichika gave Kaito at the beginning. “You’re nothing like my ideal love interest”. All those other remark that make him fail to rise to the challenge, but the kicker was that he’s younger than her. He’s trying to win an older woman’s heart? Awesome, he has my blessings.

Can’t get enough of Lemon’s mischivous, personality. Last time it was sexual suggestion and all kinds of debauchery now it’s prying into people’s personal lives. This demon loli knows no bounds. Even her victims are suffering side effects from their last meeting. Where the hell did she get that camera?!

Heh, beneath the surface, Kaito is just as perverted as any other guy with all those wild fantasies. That geeky part is real but at the same time it’s a cover for the real him.

    • Hawthorne says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if she comes from a wealthy family or something, which would explain the high-tech gear, and her weird uniform. xD

I wonder if Ichika ever gets nervous living with a somewhat perverted guy who is obsessed with video cameras?

  10. skylion says:

I’m all for starting the Cult of Lemon any time you guys are ready.
