First Impression – Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!

Fall Seriously in Love with Majikoi!

Whatever people might say, I am interested in this series. So what, if it’s another game adaptation? The seiyuu cast makes me drool; so many names that I love to hear. How can I miss this? So, joining up Jrow and anaaga for this first impressions tag with low expectation mode.

Well hello guys, it’s been a really really looooonngg time since I’ve written in Metanorn. My connection has been such a bitch these days I wasn’t even able to open Google properly. Pray for me so that I will get better connection in no time. And, oh, fall is already here! Why I never realized that since I’ve only watched two fall shows, and this is one of them! Sad anaaga is sad.

Big fan of They Are My Noble Masters here! I’ve been looking forward to this one as the potential mix of a Noble Master’s harem/romance and Ikkitousen’s action could prove to be fun for me each week. I love anime series like this that can balance out the heavy of a Penguindrum or a Fate/Zero, ya know?

In the Tanazawa Mountains, Kawakami Academy has set up a pseudo feudal war between two classes, 2-S & 2-F. Hideo Kuki leads 2-S against 2-F’s Naoe Yamato.

The two classes do battle with each other in an attempt to knock out the other class’ general. Naoe Yamato is a tactician hopelessly in love with Momoyo, while Hideo is a prideful leader who’s all about charging in. Writing that much of a summary is silly since the episode jumps all around this battlefield. I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

Kazuko, Christiane, Miyako and Mayumayu fight for 2-F. Their opponent? Only one of the 4 Warrior Devas, Momoyo.

Kazama – “Screw this, I’m calling the Nintendo Hotline for help.”

This is what happens to the barrels Donkey Kong doesn’t use.

“Time to do away with that maid outfit!”                           “Your bald head makes for good target practice”

Naoe enjoying that ass

The clothing-to-skin proportions are way off for both of the Kuki siblings (</jrowopinion>)

A new challenger appears! Matsunaga Tsubame actually gets a good hit in on Momoyo.

Spike always talked about being like the water. After seeing this, I’ll ignore his advice. :/

This robot is one tough Cookie.

Whatever Momoya had for lunch just exploded in her tummy. Might wanna get some medicine for that.

Cristiane beats Margit while Kazama knocks out Hideo

Bwahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. What is this? I don’t even. I’m pretty sure that this shouldn’t have made me laugh at all but it did. I’m suddenly reminded of UtaPri from last season because I had somewhat similar reaction but at least that was light hearted. This though has the potential to become the next Freezing and Manyuu rolled into one and then it’s my time to go, “Oh hell…”

As this was the first episode, except for some prominent characters, (you can’t really miss a guy in Fundoshi, can you? With his ass hanging out…), my eyes kept roving from one new character to another. Sure, the seiyuu cast piqued my ears, specifically Hiroshi Kamiya, SuzuKen, Yuuichi Nakamura, Junichi Suwabe, Yusa Kouji and Katsuyuki Kenishi. But even they were so sporadic that I couldn’t fully enjoy it. The most annoying thing for me was not showing Yamato’s face when he was speaking; rather some cans were opened and some out of focus characters were shown. Like srsly?! Is this how you introduce a main protagonist?

Oh also, hello there, Captain-Commander-ojisan, never thought you had the free luxury time of conducting a silly school competition. Sure, it looks like some oldschool war but I am not impressed. The tactics fell flat on their face and I’m not even sure WHY the pink haired girl is a commander. At least the Gilgamesh lookalike has the voice to be loud and eccentric but a leader position is not to cower behind and tremble. Of course, the pawns of the game did most of the work but there was no sense of victory or loss that I felt. And don’t even get me started on Kawakami. The whole, let’s be friends deal is so old and why Yamato calls her, Nee-san?! If I was a guy, I would never call the one I like Nee-san, even if this one is more towards Aniki-reverence.

I guess, I was expecting something completely different because this episode just didn’t sit well with me. Characters were poorly introduced and I didn’t feel anything except for, oh here we go, harem route hajimari! I would still watch maybe an episode or two more of this but I am disappoint, Lerche; you did an awesome job with Carnival Phantasm! ><

Well that was lots of… action. I really don’t know what to say expect that this is not how I expected it to be. I thought it was some kind of ecchi show with lots of panties, but I didn’t see that much panties. Well, it turned out better than I expected, but it’s not that great too.

This episode is pretty confusing with the amount of characters we’re being introduced; and let’s not forget the quick explanation of the setting of this show. Some people don’t mind that, but I had a hard time understanding what was happening even when it’s already explained. Nevertheless I was still able to grasp the basic personality of the characters; I think they introduced the characters pretty well. Too bad all I can see here is just a bunch of fighting and fighting; it has very little plot for attraction in it, and that’s pretty disappointing. The fights aren’t really fights too, since there are lots of illogical still images being used instead of graphics when it comes to the fights. Well, there are lots of graphic movements, but not as many as the still images.

Yet will the complaints I’ve written, I ended up liking this show. This is all about pointless fights, but that’s the fun of it. I enjoyed the characters’ interactions with each other, and the gags are pretty funneh. It’s pretty entertaining in a non-serious way, and I’m pretty sure I need some humor in my life thanks to my shitty internet. And did I mentioned Hiroshi Kamiya, Suzumua Kenichi, and Nakamura Yuchi? Let’s not forget the VC of Oga from Beelzebub too! This is like the second eargasm of this season after Working’!! Oh, fun times. Let’s just hope it won’t be like Infinite Stratos anime *shudder*

After watching the episode, I went back and read the show’s plot summary on MAL. Looking at it, the first episode was not what I would have thought it’d been. I was expecting a bit of action, but not a full scale class war with the show’s entire staff being introduced; the show kitchen sinks you to a fault. None of the theme songs were shown (you can hear a theme in the episode ending), so it had this weird combo of final-episode presentation, but also a pilot, OVA-esque episode that wanted to go nuts, throw plot to the wind and show off its use of action. And go nuts it did. The battle was all over the place and super quickly progressed, but boy oh boy, was it fun!

I really enjoyed the action and I’m really looking forward to seeing some more of these girl fights. From Mayumayu swinging her sword and Shiina shooting arrows to Momoyo’s stomach exploding, the pacing of the battle was very frenetic and fun in its sloppy nature. Animation isn’t really great, but the action was fast and cool. I don’t think there will be blood, and I was surprised that clothing was only ripped mildly and there weren’t boobs and censors floating all over the place. I’d love to see another one of these full-scale wars, but next time a little more organized.

The first episode is action-packed and fun and hooked me among many others in, but I don’t know if it’s the best precursor to the rest of the series. We knew action was going to be a part of it, but this is based on an eroge and I do expect the romance & ecchi elements to take form starting next episode. I’m sure we’ll see lots of 1-on-1 fights with these girls, lots of silly comedy/ecchi moments and Naoe progressing towards convincing Momoyo to go out with him; but if anything, the first episode was really fun and left a good impression on me! Cya next week for episode 2!

*Kuki Ageha is also in Noble Masters. Same look, same hair color, same X scar on her forehead. Also, Momoyo is very much like NM’s Kuonji in how she’s basically toying with her male love interest.*

I actually thought this first episode was better than anything I was expecting. I’m still not sold on the series, but they managed to avoid my fearsome Insta-Drop.

    • Jrow says:

It was pretty damn fun. They probably put an episode like this at the start so people on the fence like yourself would find it kind of fun or silly, w/e and watch more eps.

      • Joojoobees says:

Yeah, now that the second episode is out it looks just like any other show. Sadly my interest in this series has vanished. Someone should do a show that is more like that first episode — focusing on tactics of armies.

  2. Overcooled says:

I actually really liked that first episode. It’s like they just threw everything they thought would be cool into one episode. I guess this will be my weekly dose of WTF and exploding tummies. I’m really surprised that there isn’t as much skin exposed as I would have expected. Well, that’s a bonus for me, I guess!

…I really hope Momoka doesn’t get it on with her brother. Dude, you can do everyone else as long as it’s not her.

    • Jrow says:

Exploding tummys… wth is wrong with this show xD
Admittedly, I’d like to see some skin, but I won’t get too down if the show stays the course of episode 1.

I don’t think they’re related. That’s on Naoe for constantly calling her nee-san for w/e reason. Step 1 of making Momoyo his lady is to stop saying that.

      • Overcooled says:

Oh, thank goodness. I’ve been watching too much penguindrum, interpreting nee-san like that. Yare yare~

  3. BlackBriar says:

Whoa!! Nice!! This is better than I expected. This episode brings new meaning to the words “School Turf War” and all over a disagreement. Each girl here is a girl that definitely should not be taken lightly unless you want to end up with broken bones.

This war is no different. Ambushes, snipers, deserters, captives and traitors and suicide units?!!

And since when do schools supply weapons to students? That’s madness. Not to mention they are fighting in what looks like a feudal era style forest.

Maji de Watashi ni Koishinasai!! feels very much like Ikki Tousen and Naruto combined. There’s the girl with the eye patch, the Alpha female, Momoyo is this series Kan-U and ninja art style attacks. I’m definitely following this!!

    • Jrow says:

All the girls are quite strong, and I loved when Tsubame stepped in. I don’t know how much she’ll be around, but I’d love to see her fight more.

LOL, they had explosive arrows, robots that had lightsabers, Momoyo was gonna do a fire-and-ice number on two of the girls. Just awesome.

Dude… I love Ikkitousen and I love the Naruto manga. Maybe a tad much credit comparing it to Naruto, but at least tactics are existent here with Naoe being the lead guy and all.

  4. Amutofan123 says:

I wasn’t 100% sure what was happening in this episode, yet I strangely kind of liked it. I’m glad to see that there wasn’t panties and boobs in every shot. I wasn’t really expecting it though, since I’ve heard that the game has a fairly low ecchi content. Eh, I’ll stick with this for a few more episodes to see if it does anything for me.

    • Jrow says:

Low ecchi content!!? *Jrow checks out*
heh, don’t worry, I still got Maken Ki for that! It is fun and it seems like the real lack of focus on showing the girls naked is a plus for people.

  5. Samantha Zan says:

Well, I really thought I would be seeing boob and panty shots every 5 minutes, but no cigar, however, this is a good thing XD. So I didn’t really have any standards or expectations for this show, I mean who does really? I thought the setting was kind of funny since its like rival classes fighting each other lol. Though I didn’t figure that out till they told us straight up xD. This show doesn’t seem like a trainwreck, and with all those flavorful seiyus….I’m on this bandwagon XD

    • Jrow says:

Seeing boob and panty shots every 5 minutes sounds awesome. Oh wait, I already do that in my head at an even quicker frequency…

Kyo’s a big seiyuu fangirl, but I don’t think she really enjoyed the content of the episode that much. It’ll be fun to here Izaya/Otonashi/Natsume talking and dishing out commands each week for sure. 🙂

  6. Foshizzel says:

Best first episode ever! Really high action for a first episode, can’t wait to see more soon. And that robot? Best character ever! I found my character lololol

So many girls! Well I hope we get more action and things don’t turn into a giant who likes who story but that might not be so bad.

    • Kyokai says:

Oh I forgot to mention. The only thing I liked was COOKIE 2 because it was voiced by Jun Fukuyama. Srsly, this boy needs to change his agent real fast. >>

      • Foshizzel says:

Have you seen Jun’s other role in Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo? He plays Leopard! A crazy ass cube robot that acts more like comical Lelouch xD

  7. kluxorious says:

First Majikoi then Horizon with these many characters dump in one anime and are expected to create greatness. I’m not convinced thought the first episode was entertaining enough

  8. amado says:

as with the others, I expected something akin to sengoku otome and ikkitousen. what I got was something that was a nice change from that and also interesting characters.
the romance is also pretty good so far.

momoka reminds me a lot of medaka from medaka box manga(which will have an anime soon).

im sold now. thanks to the wincest.

  9. Moni Chan says:

I like this show. It has lots of WIN SAUSE. Love the comedy and the white haired girl with the cute voice (sounds familiar) She stood out 2 me. Can’t wait till the next episode.

  10. Dan-go says:

LOL DYNASTY WARRIORS REFERENCE. i laughed so hard when i saw that screen

  11. Dan-go says:

This school is awesome. it was a really odd title to choose though for this kind of genre. I get the feeling this is going to be barrel loads of fun. monkey barrels.

  12. akagami says:

One of the fall shows I’ve enjoyed so far. It kind of reminds me of a mix between Baka Test and Dog Days, both which were fun to watch.
