Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko – 08

Time for some mini Meme!

Welcome back for more Denpa Onna! Things got really interesting last week even though it was mostly Erio, Ryuuko, Maekawa and Makoto hanging out building bottle rockets. Sadly most of the science fiction elements have faded away from this show and have taken a turn for slice of life. Thankfully I don’t mind that genre of anime too much even though I know there are people that get extremely bored with it. In other news if you are any type of gamer you should know what is coming up soon! That’s right E3! So far I have only seen trailers and damn there are some awesome looking games coming out. With so many amazing looking games, it’s really hard to choose one that I want to play! Well, stay tuned to Metanorn for special stuff regarding E3! Well, time to knock out this review!; flying solo this time while Ness gets over her exams.

Plot this week follows Meme and the events leading up to everyone launching the home-made bottle rockets on the beach. We follow Meme around as she goes through one of her somewhat normal life. And how she meets the mystery guy, dubbing him Yamamoto. We do finally learn a tiny bit about his past and his random earring that he likes to wear.

Erio- “Goodbye, parental unit.”        Meme- “Off to take over the world, kthxbye!”

Grandma- “Can’t I just sleep ?! YOU PEOPLE KEEP AWAKING ME!”       Meme- “AHHH! It’s A TINY TROLL!”

The episode starts with Meme’s birthday when she cosplays as her daughter complete with futon and all! This episode does a few jumps in time as well complete with child version of Meme. But before that we watch Meme go to work and guess she is the boss of the local sweets shop that Maekawa works at. Might explain why Meme is so damn hyper; all that candy she gets to eat. She even visits her grandma to check up on her. Sadly she thinks she’s going to be leaving this world or as she calls it “cattle mutilation”, which we can assume is her way of saying dying soon or a simple conversational pointer. Soon after that she meets up with Mr. Rocket guy aka Yamamoto. Meme asks him to make a special rocket for her, which we saw in the previous episode the red one he’s holding.

Yamamoto- “Oh, Mr. Rocket, you really are the only one that understands my feelings. I am so lonely!”

This is how Meme gains new Twitter followers.                Yamomoto- “You is very nice lady! When does the kissing start?”

Meme sealing the deal with a kiss?!

“Meme! Will you marry me?!”         Meme-“WHAT THE FUUUUUU– NOOOO!!”

Yes, he does ask Meme to marry him! Kind of random to ask but apparently Yamamoto knew about her all along and has always had a crush on her for a very D’awwww moment! And the reason for his odd tag on his ear? To make Meme fall for him due to all the talks of cattle mutilation as he figured she would love that. Good thing Meme wasn’t attracted to one-armed dudes! Ouch that would suck… cutting your arm to get a girl’s attention. So, Yamomoto agrees to make this rocket for her and eventually gets talked into launching rockets with Erio and her friends.  Yes, it’s all coming together! We then get a flashback of tiny Meme, where she meets Elliot, who we can now safely say is Erio’s true father, not Yamamoto sadly.

Warning “Do not stare at God” aka “You will go blind forever if you stare directly”

Meme- “Where do babies come from, grandma?”    Grandma- “Space, of course, my dear.”

The day before the big launch, Meme talks to her grandma late one night to convince her to take a trip to the beach and watch some shooting rockets. She hesitates at first but agrees to get out of the house. The following morning Grandma watches all the rockets made by everyone and gets a bolt of energy after Yamamoto launches the special red rocket for Meme. That actually ends up giving off a huge explosion that fires Grandma up. Kind of a nice way for Meme to energize her Grandma! Well, I wouldn’t take mine to watch explosion anyway; might freak her out more than anything hahah. The episode ends with Meme telling Grandma she wants to visit Grandpa’s grave before taking her home.

Erio’s and Meme’s Grandma has the best laugh! Seriously the best anime Grandma ever!

Maekawa- “Yo, Meme, when do I get paid for this?”  Meme-“LOOK OVER THERE, A ROCKET!”   Erio- “Wait, money?! GIVE IT TO ME!”

Meme- “GO ROCKET!!” Grandma- “Back in my day we didn’t have these fancy rockets but woooo!”

This is basically the face my Grandma makes when the microwave or oven beeps

Extra Aliens!

Oh man, Dem lips, very nice!

Hnnnnnnggggggg, this face! So damn cute! Watch out it’s an instant moe death one hit kill!

Erio- “Dude, what the hell, only two screenshots of me?!”

Warning: Do not inhale God’s sparkles! It might cause you to become insane later.

End Thoughts:

Another interesting episode for me! Finally we get to see a bit more on Meme’s background and how she was behind the scenes pulling some strings up to this point. She does seem to be a bit like Erio minus the crazy obsession over aliens. Also, I still want to see Elliot; not sure why they felt the need for the massive censor light on his face! I guess his eyes are going to be  mystery? Or maybe he isn’t really human, hahah maybe! And I will admit, child Meme is rather cute and same for tiny Grandma! She is also fun to watch and listen to. I guess we might learn about her past next time? Possibly more about her husband and Meme’s memories of her Grandpa; would be kind of funny if he was an astronaut or something space related.

Not much has really progressed for Erio, Makoto, Ryuuko and Maekawa! Only more like adding to the previous episode; one thing is for sure though, Yamamoto is not the father! More like a really friendly guy that stalks Meme randomly. Not sure if it was creepy or cute that he asked Meme to marry him. Seemed somewhat random, then again he did pierce his own ear to gain her attention. I guess that might impress some girls? Anyway he doesn’t seem to be too crazy compared to the other characters, then again you don’t really have to be mental to fit into this series.

Aside from little story progression, this also seemed like a great episode to build up Meme’s relationship with her Grandma. I did like how excited she got after seeing that rocket explode! Sort of gave her some hope to continue living. It just shows Meme might be totally nuts and random from time to time, but she does generally care for her family and everyone else she bumps into in her life. Hopefully next week we get some more story building up between Erio and the others. Maybe more background on some other missing characters like Grandpa and Elliot?! Anyway thanks for reading! Hope you are still enjoying this show.

Meme did it I swear I can’t take my eyes off her for five minutes!

Next week! Story progression? I sure hope so! That title does make me think we might get some science fiction thrown back in.

Thanks!

  2. Kyokai says:

Cute Meme! I finally don’t dislike her anymore. xD
Now I am so waiting to see who the hell is Elliot. The sparkling pheromones that Erio exudes are certainly genetic. >.>

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah this was a great character progression episode for Meme, yeah I am waiting as well for more information on Elliot and his amazing sparkle hair.

  3. amado says:

maybe theres some alien blood in their family. it would explain the sparkles.

    • Foshizzel says:

Oh god please don’t let Elliot be a twilight alien! Damn those sparkles! HAhaha yeah could be! Maybe explains the super awesome hair.

  4. Dan-go says:

Meme is just soooo damn cute, and she works so hard for erio even though you never would of thought it, she really does her best for everyone to be happy

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah Meme is cute and really does want everyone to be happy, at first I thought she just was a terrible mom but this episode really helps her and shows she does care!

  5. Reaper says:

Crazy grandmother’s are awesome; prepare for the cattle mutilation…as for Yamamoto…why do I keep thinking of Makoto whenever I see him? Meme hitting on older version of her nephew?…no qualms there obviously!
Still wondering where the actual aliens come into this…aka Elliot…wasn’t there a character in ET called Elliot? I can’t remember…

    • Foshizzel says:

      Oh yes crazy grandma’s are fun well in anime form >.>;

Yeah Yamamoto does look like a older version of Makoto, but really wants to get close to Meme while Makoto doesn’t want her to get clingy hahah.

Yeah I think the main character in ET was called Elliot, they are pulling some time bits from that movie especially with the bike+basket.

Elliot might be the only “alien” character in this with his special hair <3

      • Dan-go says:

no i think erios hair is an alien entity unto it self hither to undiscovered by mankind

  6. Elyon says:

“CATTLE MUTILATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Oh my god. BEST GRANDMA IN THE WORLD HANDS DOWN.

    And Elliot is Edward Cullen.

    • Foshizzel says:

Hahaha yes Cattle Mutilation! And agreed best Grandma ever <3

OH GOD NO!!! WHY!!! Or he uses glitter shampoo?

  7. Zyl says:

I think the light-out of Elliott’s eyes helps to add to his aura of mystery. If he’s the guy that Meme chose and contributed to Erio’s DNA, he should be pretty cool and bishounen so leaving it to the imagination will allow us viewers to imagine him in a way in keeping with those expectations.

Really happy with how this episode helps show Meme in a better light.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah I suppose you are right it does give him a mystery vibe to his character, hahah Bishounen just makes me think of Star Driver but yeah you do make a good point not much fun learning all about him to early.

Agreed! I hated Meme at the start just based on her parental views of Erio, but this episode did show off more of her kind side.
