Meta Team’s Top 3 All Time Favourite Couples

Another Special Post from the Metanorn Team! Our very own Top Three Couple Favourites of all time!

Kyokai: Hello again! My hibernation did not last too long but I am still feeling a bit out of it. Also, some posts are pre-planned so they would be on-schedule around the site. This is just one of those few things that we have in store for you for an extended period of loveliness at Metanorn. It was not easy to categorically rate our all time favourites couple so a lot of thinking went behind it; even if some people have aversion to Romance/Shoujo, other genres have a copious amount of them so it’s just unavoidable in the end. Interesting to note though: most of the entries are not overlapping, kind of gives you an idea of our diversity and tastes as couples can be really different and still enjoy time with each other, they could totally use accessories as a good vibrating panty no matter the type of couple there is. Anyway, before we go for last year’s fan favourite couples, enjoy our meanderings in the tricky path of love and relationship that has etched many a stories in the anime world that we oh-so-love.

Sassy’s Choice~

One: Kana and Fujioka from Minami-ke: Ohoho, you’ll find that I’m not really a romance person, so my picks aren’t romantic at all! Well, one is, but not this one! Or the next one! Are they even couples? Well, it’s close enough to me. Since I don’t really care for love stories, the couples I like are usually just made up in my head to make the shows more enjoyable. It’s boring if they get together in the end! Kana and Fujioka are the hilarious pairing in Minami-ke who don’t know that they’re a couple! It’s almost there, if it weren’t for Chiaki’s meddling and Kana’s superb wisdom. In one episode, even fate knows that they’re a OTP, but we never see it happen in the series. Never fear, though, I have a feeling that chapter 1000 of the Minami-ke manga will definitely feature their marriage.

Two: Mikoto and Touma from To Aru Majutsu no Index: Yeah, these guys aren’t really a couple, either, but you know how you ship so hard that it becomes true? In your head? Another phrase for it is being delusional. I know you all know the feeling, I’m looking at all you girls out there. This is kind of a pick that resulted from my lack caring about any official couples, but I know I’m not alone here. It’s the one everyone’s rooting for. More than that Kimi no whatever animeWe get enough interaction between the two that they may as well be a couple, and they would be if it weren’t for those dumb magicians and their magical magic. And that annoying loli with the blue hair, who even cares about her anyway? Curses! Well, one day, one day, it’ll happen. I can feel it.

Three: Senjougahara and Araragi from Bakemonogatari: Yeah, guys, I have to end with a couple that actually fits the bill, and incidentally it’s the only official couple that I even care about. I have this thing about picking animes based on the girls, but when it comes to picking pairings, it goes the other way around. I have to find guys whose shoes I wouldn’t mind trading places with. And everyone knows that Ararararararagi is the badassest badass in the house. I mean, his name is a freaking cheer (RA RA!). Oh yeah, and Senjougahara is pretty nice, too. But truth be told, I wouldn’t mind Araragi getting together with that cat… nice.

Ness’s Choices~

One: Kenshin and Kaoru from Rurouni Kenshin: How could I forget about this couple that has gone through so much together? Kenshin and Kaoru’s meeting was so funny and amusing. The thought that over time they would come together was very joyous and what sealed the deal was the OVA, Rurouni Kenshin: Seisouhen. Such a heartwarming couple that goes through struggles in a harsh time period. and yet they made it through.

Two: Yusuke and Keiko from Yu Yu Hakusho: Such a comedic couple; childhood friends of a delinquent and a smart girl. Keiko who’s always left in the dark about Yusuke’s dangers and still ends up following him through his fights. Who would have thought that at the age of 16, the ignorant Yusuke would make a promise of being together with Keiko. Yet in the end, they mature and come together as the cute couple that they are.

Three: Edward and Winry from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: I expected these two to be together in the end but how they matured to such a level and having children was quite surprising. Edward and Winry are such a comedic couple that they’re enjoyable to watch. Especially when Edward gets scared of Winry when she has to repair his arm. These two are such a big comedic relief from the dangerous adventures that Edward and Al have to go through.

Hoshi’s Choices~

One: Risa Koizumi and Atsushi Otani from LovelyComplex: This is probably one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make. I’ve been reading manga for almost six years now, 70 % of that being romance because I am a girl, and I will occasionally default back to shoujo. Literally, the first couple that popped into my mind was these two, the hilarious duo of Koizumi, the extremely tall girl, and Otani, the extremely short boy. I tried picking others, but these two, hands-down, are my favorite. To me, they feel very…REAL. They don’t magically fall in love with each other or have been in love with each other since they were kids; they gradually start to notice their feelings for each other, and eventually become a couple. They start out as good friends, denying that they’re going out to people who ask, and they start off SLOW, more realistically, and I love that. The story in the manga itself may be a little slow, but it’s filled with many laughs and drama from these two. They’re just so entertaining and hysterical, and they fit so well together! These two will definitely be my most favorite couple of all-time~.

Two: Tohru Honda and Kyo Sohma from Fruits Baskets: Strolling down memory lane here by mentioning Fruits Baskets, the first manga I ever sat down and said “I WILL COLLECT THIS WHOLE SERIES”, and the first anime that me and my mother actually bonded with ;3; We always loved the darling Tohru, and we both fell for the hot-headed Kyo~. I really don’t know why I started shipping these two right off the bat when I first read the series; they were such opposites, but they clicked to me! I never had the doubt that Tohru would end up with Yuki, NEVER, especially after Volume 6 where they grew a strong bond with each other. After that, and the numerous teasing hints that followed, I stuck by the two because in the end they cared about each other very much, and of course, they looked so positively cute together~.

Three: Haruhi Fujioka and Tamaki Suou from Ouran High School Host Club: The couple that had me on the edge of my seat, stressing, waiting, AND WAITING for them to FINALLY realize they loved each other. I was so anxious to finally have them confess to each other, I followed the manga diligently to see that moment *A* Anyways, I grew very fond of these two because I loved their individual characters. Haruhi at the time seemed really cool and cute to me, and Tamaki…OH Tamaki, is just TOO HILARIOUS. Then when I started seeing them together, they just made such an adorable and funny couple. I loved their freak outs whenever they got too close to each other and the cute awkward moments between them. The only reason I had to bump down these two to my number three was the fact that I don’t have as much as an attachment to them as I do for my other picks, but it doesn’t mean I don’t love this couple to bits!~

Foshizzel’s Choices~

One: Nia and Simon from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann! The adult arc, even though they are quickly paired up as kids. The adult versions are more of a couple at that point and Nia keeps her cute and fluffy side to her personality! Simon is a great match with her; he even goes through space and time to chase after her! That has to be some intense dedication. But I won’t spoil things if you haven’t seen TTGL yet, I highly recommend it to you so do check it out.

Two: Patrick Colasour and Kati Mannequin from Gundam 00! These two are a strange pair with Patrick’s crazy random personality and Kati’s strict and serious side. However, put them together and you end up with some cute and funny moments! These two really shine together in the somewhat failed Gundam00 movie, which saves the whole movie for me anyway. Still, don’t know how Patrick is still alive is beyond me, maybe it’s the POWER OF LOVE?!

Three: Eureka and Renton from Eureka Seven! For Renton it was love at first site, even though she smashed his house! So more like love at first crash landing. Eureka doesn’t really fall for him until halfway through the series after she learns about “love”. They do end up together near the end of the series, but their true development is seen more in the movie.

Overcooled’s Choices~

One: Horo and Lawrence from Spice and Wolf: I’m sure you all know I’m probably the last person you’ll catch watching something romantic. Watching people fall in love just isn’t interesting, and I couldn’t really care less about most anime couples. Of course, there are exceptions. The biggest one for me would be the charming Horo and quick-witted Lawrence. I found myself actually rooting for them to get together and craving more romance, which is something I have never done while watching an anime before. Not only are the two a great match – both as self-sufficient, intellectual people – but their relationship progressed so naturally I barely even noticed the change. Horo is a breath of fresh air from most of the tsundere psychobitches out there, and Lawrence is quite simply a gentleman. Beautiful.

Two: Togame and Shichika from Katanagatari: Togame and Shichika. Oh, you two. At first it seemed like every romance in my eyes, just something else that happens in between the juicy action. The casual way Togame just let Shichika carry her around and indulge in his long hair fetish became a really subdued way for them to grow closer. It didn’t bug me at all. Before I knew it, Togame had genuinely become infatuated with Shichika, and Shichika’s almost matter-of-fact “I’ve fallen for you” seemed to hold a lot more meaning. As a fan of bittersweet endings, the last episode sealed the deal to make this couple unignorable

Three: Birdy and Nataru from Tetsuwan Birdy Decode: I have no idea how many of you saw Birdy the Mighty Decode and season 2, or even cared about it, but *I* did. In fact, I ended up really liking it. It was only halfway through that I realized half of it was romance based, and I was actually ENJOYING myself. Never has the childhood friend romance taken such an interesting turn. The fact that they’re not even from the Planet Earth helps to spice things up, that’s for sure. This couple is more tragic than anything else, given how they have no choice but to fight, but…hey…I love couples who fight to the death. There’s nothing as romantic as that.

Hime’s Choices~ I’m not usually one for squishy shojo dorama, the excessive spewing of the phrase “I love you” makes me nauseous. That being said I don’t have a complete heart of stone and there have been a few couples in anime history that have had me dewy eyed or have had me hoping they get a happy ending…not many but hey, I’m hard to please. So, here’s my favourite 3 anime couples.

One: Celty and Shinra from Durarara!!! I’m a sucker for crack pairings or couples that are, how shall I put it . . . quirky? Durarara!! already has a lot of emphasis on love and the strange obsessions that stem from it but for me these two are the ones that describe it best. Why I root for them instead of say, Mikado and Anri, is because these guys have the advantage of being older and past the bumbling uncomfortable stage. There’s a lot less embarrassment and constant blushing. Besides that there are very few variations on the “teen romance” genre that we haven’t seen before. Celty and Shinra are interesting characters to begin with, so when you put them together I can’t help being invested and fascinated about what interactions they are going to have and what will come from it. And yeah, they’re messed up, but part of what makes them so damn loveable is just how weird they are.

Two: Rock and Revy from Black Lagoon: What’s great about these two is that they’re the typical brain VS brawn team, Rock’s moral code forever being challenged by Revy’s kill or be killed philosophy. I like the drama that comes from it, it doesn’t feel forced and it’s not too heady a moral debate, it’s just two different characters trying to get the other to understand them. Albeit….unconventionally. It’s a good example of opposites attracting; they’re so different that they compliment each other. But as obvious the sexual tension is between them, even to the other characters, there’s unlikely to be an outright confession ever. Their romantic moments are subtle and sometimes don’t even involve any dialogue, which makes a great contrast to the loud and aggressive arguments they sometimes have, which is why I like them so much. I’m always more interested in a relationship that relies more on actions rather than the spewing of the phrase “I love you”.

Three: Shinichi and Ran from Detective Conan: These two are so damn frustrating! Just get to-freakin-gether already! You thought Peter Parker and Mary Jane had a cock-tease romance? Well they’ve got f*cking nothing on these two! Over 600 episodes and 14 movies and they are STILL on page-god-damn-one. Now I know there is that slight problem on Shinichi being shota-fied and that Ran doesn’t know, but there have been countless times he’s been back in his original body. He couldn’t spare a minute to tell the poor girl who’s totally in love with him and has to put up with all his crap that he appreciates all she does for him? Bullcrap. Man up, Shinichi! And Ran, stop being such a pushover! I know it sounds like I’m bashing them, and I am, but it’s only because the sweet moments they have are really sweet. Much to my own scorn I want the cock-blocking to cease and to see them happy together, not as frustrated with each other as I am! I only rant because I care, honest.

Hato’s Choices~

One: Kyon and Yuki from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu: Not gonna lie, I’ve been a fan of this paring for a long time. Why? Because Kyon is awesome and because Yuki is awesome. When they get together, that kinda makes doubly awesome, doesn’t it? Even if they aren’t like that in the show, they have a crazy close friendship. Okay, she’s a humanoid interface that doesn’t show much emotion, but it has been shown (and written) that she has emotions and feelings for Kyon! So let’s just leave it at that, yeah? Also, fuck Haruhi. She’s annoying anyway.

Two: Kyousuke and Kuroneko from OreImo: Kirino can go and die in a hole. Whoever says this show is all about incest can also die in a hole. Because It’s not. I haven’t read the novels and I don’t know if Kirino and him do get down to the nasty, but for now, it’s all Kuroneko and Kyousuke. They are both so lovably cynical that it’s almost a crime that they aren’t together at the moment. If there isn’t a second season where Ruri and Kyousuke maintain a relationship with Kirino being a bitch, I’ll be very disappointed.

Three: Battler and Beatrice from Umineko no Naku Koro ni: Nothing really needs to be said about this couple. I mean, seriously. It’s the most amazing love/hate relationship ever. Towards the end of the series they almost admire each others company and arguments, like they are arguing for the sake of being with each other, it’s quite sweet. I’m still not sure whether or not they should be together, but hell, even as a non-canon couple, they’re awesome.

Kyokai’s Choices~

One: Shiki and Mikiya from Kara no Kyoukai: I don’t think, this would ever change as I said in Anivision’s episode 74. My all time favourite couple would remain to be the ever glorious and ever complicated Shiki and Mikiya. My reasons are too many to count and add here. Simply, both of them are weird by definition, like Shiki’s always talking about not being alive, not caring even but on a very different level doing exactly the opposite. While, the kind hearted Mikiya is loved by everyone but is the real weird one to actually see goodness in everything even the corrupted. Put them together and you get a couple that is dynamic, special and heart warming. I’ll simply say, Shiki is half me and if I find Mikiya in RL, I’ll marry him in a second.

Two: Senjougahara and Araragi from Bakemonogatari: There’s a time for straight-faced romance but when it comes to Bakemonogatari, all you get is over the top angles, long-winded dialogues (pausing to read on-screen lines) and some crazy ass action. You really don’t think your first meeting with the girl you will love and cherish would start with her stapling your cheek? But that is exactly what happens and not to mention the amazing twelfth episode, where I should rest my case of their awesomeness.

Three: Sawako and Kazehaya from Kimi ni Todoke: I can bet you have become tired of the power couples because let’s face it, neither KnK or Bake are pure romance/shoujo per se but Kimi ni Todoke is. I still remember discovering it’s manga one day while idly browsing mangafox. It was the day, I finished all the available chapters in one go (till chapter 16), the story of Sawako and Kazehaya is that interesting and literally plays on your heart strings with their innocence, cluelessness and purity. It’s not your average shoujo and that is what makes this an amazingly cute trip. ALSO, so looking forward to the next two episodes!!! :3

Alright, DONE! Hope you enjoyed delving into some cuteness and mush~
