Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood – 49

Episode 49 – Filial Love

This episode was more of tying loose ends and regrouping for the Promised day, which will happen on the Solar Eclipse. We return to the showdown that is happening near the slum area of Central, Kanama. Ran Fan tries to help but her joints overstretch because they’ve still not gotten used to the new automail. Pride as usual is going over his mind to goad Ed and Greed—with added creepy looks to boot—who are falling short in fighting him because he has a steady light source now.

In a dark corner devoid of shadows, Hohenheim tries to wake up Alphonse, who had been under complete of control of Pride. Al finally comes to his senses and tells his father about Selim. Hohenheim wonders, because all homunculi are the alter egos of his alter ego, this might be the reason why they could manipulate Al’s blood seal so easily. The regrouped Chimeras and Fu-jisan worry that if this goes on the population of Kanama would be embroiled in this as well. Al internally blames himself for involving so many people in this mess. He comes up with a plan and asks for Hohenheim’s second-to-none Alchemic help.

Ed and Greed fight on with the continuously evil looking Pride. Even Greed calls him a “Monster”, when Pride asks how many lives he has left and should he eat him as well?

Hohenheim enters the fray saying, “Heroes are supposed to show up late,” but he’s not there to fight. Even then Pride knows, this would not be child’s play so he retracts from distance and concentrates only on Hohenheim. While Prides rears to make his move, Alphonse tries to attack Pride from behind which really is to no avail.

Ed tries to interfere but Hohenheim stops him. Pride laughs at the disappointing strategy of attack while he was concentrating on his father. Hohenheim roars, “Do not ever mock my son!”

What ensues is simply AWESOME!!! Sugoiii!

Alphonse holds onto Pride and is too late to reach Hohenheim. He’s trapped in a thick wall made to detain him. Al is delighted that his plan worked. He simply challenges Pride to have a test of will with him because he does not have any human pulse or urges. They are to remain detained in this confinement until the Promised Day passes them by.

Edward screams at Hohenheim why did he do this but he calmly replies that this was not his decision to make but Al’s’ “If it were up to you, Al knew you would never let him do it.” He has done this so that his nakama can be safe and have a real chance in fighting the Promised day. Ed does not have an answer to that, so he talks with Al in turn who tells him to relax because this would be just for one day.

Pride talks about foolish humans who can do anything to protect their loved ones. He gives an example of Wrath’s wife who once had saved him from an oncoming collision by a car. He is highly fascinated by playing house with her. He agrees that he loves her. (Huh?! Pride and love? Kind of hard to imagine in the current circumstances).

Greed is shown running towards Central. Including him, only Sloth and Father are at large in Central because Lust, Gluttony and Envy are gone, Pride detained and Wrath missing. Scar, Marcoh and gang arrive at Central slum to get the news about Bradley’s train being bombed and Mei Chan still around the city. They ask about Kanama and meet up with Al and Hohenheim in the outskirts of forest. We also see a glimpse of Kimblee who is shown killing a lot of Ishvalans. (Psycho! :punch: )

All of them regroup to chalk out the next day’s actions while Fu-jisan goes to Central to scout Mustang’s movements and Lin-Greed’s whereabouts. Chimeras swear their allegiance with the rebellion rather than Kimblee and wonder aloud about Al’s guts in staying locked with Pride. Ed readies himself resolutely for the coming daylight; he will give his all just like Al.

Mustang visits Hughes’s grave before getting into action with his rebellion. We also see Denny Brosh (partner of Maria Ross), who rushes out of his home looking at the smoke spreading in the city, while his younger siblings obsess over the Solar Eclipse. Mustang moves out into the city keeping Fuher’s wife as a hostage for safety, directly engaging the army. All officials are ordered to kill everyone but Mustang in the group, even Bradley’s wife.

The episode ends with shots being fired, which the preview tells us were not aimed at Bradley’s wife. Cavalry arrives in the next epi, when all parties come together from every corner of Central to defy Father’s plans.

Hehee. Kinda justice league! ^^;

Finally! We have got a full blown rebellion ready to pounce at the army controlled by Father. The climax has started and I can only guess that the coming episodes would be action packed. I like the way how Hohenheim’s personality is slowly unfurling in front of us. He doesn’t seem to be that inhuman or distant anymore. More like a figure you like, when you get to know them more. The clue of all homunculi sharing his alter ego would be an important clue for the coming episodes. Hohenheim is the central character in the sense that Father has taken his DNA and then further divided into the 7 homunculus (Lust, Gluttony, Envy, Pride, Sloth, Greed and Wrath).

A lot of questions cropped up, like, what is Greed’s plan after all? Does he want to kill Father in order to take his place? Would Lin and Greed be ever united on the same grounds or keep on fighting for their opposite values? What of Envy who has lured Mei Chan back to Central? What of Bradley—I’m sure he’s not dead, injured maybe but not dead. Let’s see what happens next week!
