Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku – 04 – 09

Magical Girl Raising Project (4)

Don’t you dare look cute and innocent! We know what you did!

winter15-foshAs you can tell I’ve been quite busy mostly due to irl issues and holiday time sneaking up on me! Thankfully i’m back with a huge review for these batch of episodes and boy oh boy did things escalate really fast for this series! I know from the start most have complained that this series was slow at getting to the freaking point, but after the events of episode four things have gotten CRAZY and by CRAZY I mean the deaths; however I wanted that from the start and I gotta say between the likes of Flip Flappers this is my second favorite series.

Well I said at the top of the post why i’m behind.

Yeah some of the deaths are deserved, but a few caught me by surprise.

This series managed to save itself from being potentially dull and forgettable in my opinion. Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku stayed afloat whereas Flip Flappers sank to the sea bottom. I saw Overcooled’s MAL article comparing the series to Madoka Magica earlier today but having never seen that show, making the connections is next to impossible.

When it comes to gaining something that seems too good to be true, it usually is. There’s always some kind of catch and all the chosen were too giddy to look the gift horse in the mouth.

Where the deceased are concerned, if you ask me, Ruler and Calamity Mary got what they deserved. Ruler was one thing being a jerk but Calamity Mary was a real piece of work. A true irredeemable wretch. I didn’t think I could look at her with anymore disdain than I already did but her backstory compelled me to increase the output. Then there’s there remnants Ruler left behind. No damns given to one of the annoying angels getting done in by Winterprision. Swim Swim on the other hand is falling from grace in rapid pace. I want to keep liking her but her actions are becoming too appalling. Killing Top Speed who was later revealed to be pregnant really struck a nerve. Pity to everyone else who died in the fray.

    • Foshizzel says:

I suppose but if they started off day one killing them off I wouldn’t be as invested as I am for this series! Yeah it certainly took a while to get into the meat of the anime I wont deny that.

As for Flip Flappers sinking for you I guess that is the difference between us because its highly praised as being the best this season has to offer via Twitter, Tumblr and most social media sites. And to those that wrote it off as being too wild and crazy for them imo they should honestly give it another go because after the events of episode three it has been less about the girls going on these wacky adventures and lately it has started focusing on Papika, Kokona and Yayaka’s relationship and each episode after three has a different tone some episodes are far more serious as of late.

I love OC to bunches;however I don’t agree with 90% of her MAL article she says most episodes have one death? Not really episodes eight and nine both have two or even three of the girls dying in the same episode so it isn’t “death of the week” every time and I don’t know why it bugs me to no end that everyone always plays the Madoka comparison game EVERY TIME one of these dark magical girl series pop up and calling them clones or copies of it tends to annoy me! Do I hate Madoka? Yes and no, the yes side is happy that Shaft pumped new life into a dying genre while the no side feels nobody is ever going to give one of these dark magical girl shows the time to shine on their own without being compared to the “best” dark magical girl series and finally Madoka came out in 2011 can we move on already? It’s 2016 almost 2017 I think it’s time to find a new horse to beat on.

Anyway yes some of the deaths are well deserved like Rule, Calamity Mary and the one angel girl, but a few of the others like Top Speed, Magicaloid 44, WinterPrison, Sister Nana and La Pucelle caught my by surprise! Now if Cranberry can get taken out soon ill be happy and Fav as well…

Well, you know you’re not going to win over everyone. People look for or will be taken in by different things depending on a series. Re: Zero got praise by some but was a let-down for me because of how much of a pit-fall the two mid arcs were.

If you say so. Overly cute and wacky for the sake of it with nothing more to go on aren’t aspects that will earn any positive word from me. Though the likeliness is low, I might give it another chance but for not making a sufficient impression in my book, it won’t be a priority. Especially when/if there are far more appealing and entertaining shows around.

however I don’t agree with 90% of her MAL article

Looks like you’re not the only one. There’s a discussion thread with commentators giving their thoughts on the article and they’re tearing it apart every way they can saying “The writer doesn’t know what they’re talking about” among other things. It’s the first time seeing that kind of response on one of Overcooled’s MAL articles.

I don’t know why it bugs me to no end that everyone always plays the Madoka comparison game EVERY TIME one of these dark magical girl series pop up and calling them clones or copies of it tends to annoy me!

That’s trouble and an annoyance in and of itself. Particularly a reason not to stick around conversations complaining about a show needing to bring in something “original” because it always ends the same way and you get bugged by it. This far along in time, countless number of things have been tried. Some will work and others will fail but the real trouble is when it works. The moment a new idea comes, it will get substantial praise but over time and because of its success, everyone else will draw from the same well and soon what was once considered “fresh and original” eventually becomes common. So any series that uses it automatically gets labeled a clone of some other show. Like I said, I’ve never seen Madoka but every time a magical girl series shows up, a comparison to Madoka isn’t too far behind. It’s the same issue when certain series get irritatingly compared to Attack on Titan as though it created a whole new genre others are barrowing from when Titan itself first aired all the way back in Spring 2013. That’s more than three years ago, now. Come on…

        • HannoX says:

As for a show being labeled a clone or copy of another, that isn’t the real problem. The question that needs to be answered is is the new show well-done? It’s like saying because we already had The Iliad and War and Peace there was no reason for The Red Badge of Courage or All Quiet on the Western Front to be written.

I’m a big fan of Madoka, but that doesn’t keep me from appreciating this show on its own merits. In my opinion it’s one of the better dark magical girl series.

          • Foshizzel says:

Yeah that is true, but again nobody is willing to give these new dark magical girl shows the time of day to stand on their own before fans of Madoka take shots at them before the series is finished! I remember three or four episodes into Yuki Yuna the same thing happened it was quickly written off as a “copy” or “try hard clone” of Madoka.

            • HannoX says:

Don’t say nobody, because I just said I have given it a chance and appreciate it. The same for Yuki Yuna. Say instead most of the ones who post do so to trash the new show without giving it a chance. They’re more interested in trolling than judging the new show fairly (which would allow trashing the bad ones, which this isn’t).

      • BlackBriar says:

PS: I forgot to mention. Congrats on your comment count. IT’S OVER 9000!!!

  3. skylion says:

I think my only real complaint about the show is that the character connections seem to loose, and the focus – right before the character dies- is a bit off. Other than that the premise is just fine and they are doing well despite that complaint.

As for the Madoka comparison? It’s gonna happen, and yeah, I agree it’s low hanging fruit for the fan base to pick up on. Like you say, it’s years gone and we know the story too well. Need to give Keikaku time to finish before we can see the line running through it.
