Another Challenger Has Appeared! New entries in the “ecchi battle harem” genre are not exactly a rare thing. Pretty much every season has something new that’s trying to mix boobs, butts, moans, leers, groping, smashing, yellling, and a lot of pretty girls, but it’s not as easy as just putting all those things together. So how does this season’s example of the extreme end of this spectrum stack up?

Sexy Time
Damn the MC is so dead!
Giant futuristic city? Check! High powered weapons? Check! Giant monsters to blow up? Check! Tight flight suit wearing girls? Double check! Yes Masou Gakuen HxH has a lot of the usual things we’ve come to expect for these kinds of mindless fanservice series, but I don’t think fans of this particular genre really care if the creators decide to borrow the same elements from other ecchi anime and come on lets be real does anyone actually watch these ecchi action series for deep stories? Personally for any ecchi to sell me completely on their silly series they need to have fun or unique characters. In the past I have enjoyed characters like Maria from Shinmai Maou no Testament, Emile from Hundred, Kirin from Gakusen Toshi Asterisk, Philphie from Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut and Meifon from Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid.

As for Masou Gakuen HxH I don’t really have a favorite girl quite yet because we need to see how the other girls act besides Little-Miss-Tsundere-Angry-Pants-Aine Chidorigafuchi who wasn’t full on Tsun so she wasn’t terrible; however I think Yurishia Farandole and Hayuru Himekawa might end up being a bit more fun! Then again it was funny to see how aggressive Aine was in the mini future preview at the start of this episode, but I did see the token LOLi Sylvia Silkcut who looks like she belongs in a series like Annie Happy? Anyway she was shown in the OP and is with the other three girls? So I assume Kizuna will get sexy time with her at some point in the Super-Cool-holodeck-sex-danger room. And by sexy time I mean just touching here and there nothing past that because if the MC actually had sex with any of the girls they would become way too powerful and blow up the world!

Masou Gakuen HxH, which makes it really confusing because you can’t just talk about it as “HxH” since that’s taken by a show I’ll never watch, isn’t exactly breaking new ground here in the execution of a show like this. It doesn’t help that it telegraphs a How We Got Here structure with the cold open, although that is the show’s chance to show off the thing that will at least draw some people to the show: pretty much straight up sex. Except, of course, it’s not really sex. Let’s call it 3rd Base heavy petting. Except for the giveaway that we’re going to get for the end with the ‘secret weapon’ (riiiiiiiiight). The girls get powered up through, er, getting powered up by Kizuna, and I don’t know if it’s cynical or just knowing the audience that they’ve even got a holodeck-style love hotel room they can use. Frankly, I find the whole concept that these girls go out and fight, and when they’re feeling like they don’t have enough energy left, they pop into the love hotel room and go a round or two with Kizuna to be kinda hilarious. “We gotta bring the holo-bedroom to the fight!” I’m imagining it’s in a 70’s conversion van. Does it have cheesy sunset graphics on the outside, too? Or a bumper sticker that says “If this van’s a-rockin, don’t come a-knockin!”? It even had a mirror ball, which always means it’s Business Time.

I have to say I was expecting this show to be a bit worse than it turned out to be. There are a couple things I think came down in its favor as far as how they integrated the supposedly sexy scenes into the rest of the show. For the main thing: Kizuna seemed to strike the right balance between embarrassment at and awareness of what he was doing and doing what his older sister was urgently demanding he do. He didn’t get that kind of lecherous look, but neither did he totally spaz out and say he wasn’t going to do it. And I’ll give the show a bit of credit: When Kizuna needed to power up Aine, they had a good analogy for cover (“Check her very thoroughly for injury”) and actually did a good job of making Kizuna not be just Gropey McPervalot as far as where he touched Aine. Yeah, it ended up with the boob grope, but even that was better than you usually see, where it’s like someone’s trying to operate an out of control mecha. The show actually managed to preserve a little bit of sexiness in the encounters we saw, and even make them somewhat integrated into the timeline of the show.

I’m with Highway on this I never went into this thinking it was going to be AMAZING or AWESOME because Masou Gakuen HxH isn’t really doing anything new outside of similar series like this, but with a smaller cast maybe things will be a bit more fun instead of having a cast filled with ten or so girls? We shall see! There were a few things that made me laugh like how Aina had all those weapon stashes all over the place or were the weapons sent to that location? Either way its pretty handy! Also the CGI “undead” mech looking monsters looked kinda lame! I guess most of the budget went into the sexy scenes? So what did you like about this first episode or are you not going to watch anymore? I plan on watching a bit more! Hell I finished Hundred so Masou Gakuen HxH can’t be THAT bad right?
I sure wasn’t getting my hopes up with this, because we’ve had a lot of really bad shows in this genre. Either they try to have too much in the way of sexytime stuff (like Valkyrie Drive – Mermaid), or they just tack it on because they think they have to (like Shinmai Maou no Testament) or it just has the wrong atmosphere entirely (like the execrable Daimidaler). It’s easy to mess it up. So I think that this was actually a good start for Magias Academy Hybrid x Heart. I worry that Hayuru’s tsundere routine will get a little old (a little tsun goes a long way, remember that), but apart from that they’re not overloading us with characters, and the ones they do have seem at least aware of the situation in such a way that it can be played earnestly. That’s something I think will be key, that it doesn’t get too silly or jokey.

The creation of Masou Gakuen’s a funny story – the ero-content was originally less obvious, but the author’s editor, O-san, “advised” him to amp up the lewdness more, telling him that if he’s going to do lewd, then he should do it thoroughly.
One month later, O-san blasted the revised story for becoming a “mere porn novel – where the hell’s the plot, you bastard!”

Everyone calls everything like that “borderline hentai”. I mean, heck, they’ll call a manga / anime like Nozoki Ana ‘borderline hentai’, when it’s blown past the border and is heading for the capital city of hentai. “Borderline” is a terrible descriptor. But like I said, this first episode actually seemed to have at least a clue how to make something sexy and exciting. Or at least not “no. No. ugh, what are you doing? NO.”
The story about the editor actually, you know, editing is pretty much what you want to see, tho.

It’s either hentai or it isn’t. Hentai is sex, they have sex. thee is simulated sex happening and it takes up about 90 percent of the run time. And it looks mostly even more stupid than the heavy petting on display here. The dialog is even worse.
So, at least this show has that going for it. Maybe we should call it borderline done?

Whew! That was daringly explicit. Easy to see why Kyushu automatically gave this show the axe right at the gate (TVQ Kyushu Cancels Its Broadcast of Hybrid×Heart Magias Academy Ataraxia TV Anime). It’s teetering on the line but hasn’t crossed it.
Personally, where lewdness is concerned, Masou Gakuen HxH is one step away from matching Valkyrie Drive‘s level. Regardless of the suggestive acts, the girls have their clothes on. Even when ripped, they’re still strategically covering the important areas. Hundred pales considerably in comparison to those two in that department.

I’m forming the idea that comparing this show to the ecchi/fighter type shows that have come before is a futile exercise.
Honestly, it’s like adding a handful of red clay to a mud wrestling match that’s already in progress. Sure you’ll get a new color for a while, but it will get mixed up in the general mud scrum sooner rather than later.

I think you’re right, in that none of them are particularly edifying or groundbreaking. But it certainly seems to me that minor differences in quality or story or mindset from the beginning of the show can have long-lasting effects on the watchability and enjoyability of these shows. Such as I argue with High School DxD, where I find Issei to be a cut above pretty much every other protagonist in one of these shows due to his consistent and clear motivations, his directed effort towards improving, and his dedication to Rias above all others. So in that vein, I hope that they imbue Kizuna with some kind of motivations besides “I don’t like it when people are sad.”
