First Impression – Macross Delta

Are you ready for more Macross!?

winter15-foshIt’s hard to believe that Macross Frontier came out in 2008 and Macross Delta takes exactly place in the same universe roughly 8 years later? I wonder if Ranka and Sheryl will appear? Ranka would be about 25 and Sheryl would be 26, but I know that probably isn’t gonna happen! So anyway if this is your first Macros experience I will say if you love anime series that use the power of song to save the world like Symphogear and AKB0048 you will love the world of Macross!

The Power of Song!

MacrossDe (1)

Gotta love these dancing mechs~

For those that find idols popping up in this Macross series I will say through the years this series has always been about using the power of song to bring people together ever since very beginning back in the 80’s and Macross Delta continues that trend; however This time the songs are actually the only cure people who contract the Var Syndrome that makes you randomly go berserk or make you more zombie like? Whatever the case it isn’t good! I mean the audience knows it can “cure” the virus, but I don’t think the idol characters know that just yet? Speaking of the Idols aka Walkure sadly we don’t really get to learn much about them other than the fact that they also double as pilots which I think is a first for any Macross? At least I don’t think it’s been done like that before? I could be wrong about that.

MacrossDe (7)

Freyja is quite the cute character.

Instead of meeting the main idols of Walkure we spent a good majority of the episode following Freyja Wion who is a stowaway from another planet? Design wise she kind comes off as the token OMG super cute character much like a Ranka Lee back in Macross Frontier and just like Ranka I’m gonna guess Freyja is also an alien? Hayate did mention that she was a Fidiaminan? Which is what the members of Walkure are as well? I wonder if she comes from the same planet as the enemy faction aka the Kingdom of Wind because she has the same odd style of hair as those Aerial Knights that attacked the idol group! I don’t really get why Freyja has that heart-hair-thing other than it boosting her singing ability? I can’t wait to find out more about Freyja!

MacrossDe (9)

I hope Hayate becomes a kick ass mech pilot!

Aside from Freyja we also followed Hayate Immelman who is probably the token romantic interest for Freyja later on? I hope not because they gave off more of a brother sister relationship to me, but of course if you’ve followed any Macross series you know they are famous for their silly little love triangles! So yeah Hayate is a interesting character so far, but right now he really isn’t all that special right now or is he? I mean he does have a talent piloting various machines even though I did laugh after he displayed his crazy “ability” to make machines dance? I only laughed because I’ve never seen something like that before! It was really over the top and silly, but hey it proved to be super effective against the missile spam…so to quickly recap Freyja met Hayate, they got chased by the police, the Kingdom of wind attacked and Walkure appeared and sang their songs saving the day with Frejja providing backup.

End Thoughts

This episode was great even though I already saw it when it was released about a month or so ago? Yeah that was a low quality version, but now we got a higher quality this time. While I wasn’t all that happy about seeing the SAME episode again it was still cool to actually SEE things this time! That said it was still kinda hard to see what was happening on screen because things happened so fast, but at least the mecha fighting/fighter pilot/explosions were AWESOME! Character wise I liked seeing the interactions between Hayate and Freyja and I fully expect Hayate to be a badass pilot and Freyja to eventually join Walkure; however that might take some time or will we get that next week? I think this episode was technically the introduction to the world of Macross Delta and the next episode will be the actual start of things? Either way I’m super excited that Macross returned! Now to keep my eyes peeled for Ranka or Sheryl appearances…

About

Is huge anime fan from Florida! who loves to watch anime and also enjoys drawing and collecting pictures, my favorite genre of anime has to be Mecha, there is just something awesome about giant robots beating the crap out of each other! Other than that type of show, I love a good comedy or action series :D

Well, if you wouldn’t watch low quality web versions, you wouldn’t be disappointed! Wait for the real thing! I bet you play beta versions of games and complain about the bugs, too! 😉

I liked this episode, and the series starts off pretty much like you’d expect. I like this kind of setup a lot more than something like Gundam Orphans where everything’s so serious and grim, but still has a point to it unlike something like Heavy Object. Yeah, there are serious consequences, but it’s not always beating down the characters. Plus I always categorize this as a “space” show, not really a mech show. And we’ll see if we set up another love triangle like Macross Frontier did.

And as I tweeted about this show, it’s #SoMacrossItHurts 🙂

I don’t think I was talking about the quality much lol just that I had to re-watch it again, but the updated episode included the extra scene with Hayate piloting that damaged mecha and saving Freyja from the missile spam and nope I know what to expect when testing beta stuff for games…I don’t complain because I know it isn’t finished yet.

That is the difference between Gundam and Macross which is fine I don’t want to jump right into another war is hell themed mecha series so it’s a refreshing change, but call it what you want space or mecha doesn’t matter to me…

As far as love triangles go I could see Hayate getting with Mirage since shes a non idol pilot and she ran into him with Freyja, but yeah I dunno for all we know one of the main idol girls will fall for him.

First episode reminiscent of Frontier. Looks like they are now using Fold Quartz.

they also double as pilots which I think is a first for any Macross?

FireBomber! Ozma will attest to the awesomeness that is FireBomber from Macross 7.

I expect Mirage to be related to someone from Macross 7. I also expect Mashiro Windbloom to appear. Wait Mai wrong Otome show. The current summary is:

Otaku bait Idols VS Fujoshi bait. In Awesome Mecha. Those smexy Ragnarok pilots.

Generally speaking I think I like Macross more than Gundamn (and for a genre I pretty much don’t watch that’s saying, nothing? something? I’m soooooo confused!).

So with that in mind I liked this one. Much like Fosh, I saw the crappy web version first, so it’s welcome to watch a much better one. But, I don’t think I’m kidding when I say I would much rather the studio give me a New Stage for AKB0048. But this will do quite well in a pinch. It doesn’t take itself way to serious (a crack in the story for Orphans that only grew deeper the longer it went on), and I think I’ll grow to like the two mains more.

    • Foshizzel says:

Well Gundam is usually about war and people dying and more war and more death while Macross ditches some of that in favor of romances, music, space travel, aliens and a lot more stuff so I don’t think you’re all that crazy for liking Macross over Gundam.

If the aliens can be defeated through song, I propose we weaponise the voices of Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Placido Domingo all at once!

I’m new to Macross, so I’d be lying if I said I wanted more. Not a bad start. It was interestingly fun and felt like a return since the last series I remember with this semi-serious similarity was AKB0048. Or more recently Senki Zesshou Symphogear, now that I think about it.

I feel a huge swell of pity for those Var Syndrome victims. They show some grotesque symptoms when infected.

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

      Start with Robotech. >_>

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah AKB0048 and Sypmphogear use the power of song to fight much like the past Macross days;however unlike the other two Macross often deals with romance and love triangles! Then again it’s hard to say if Macross Delta will touch on that or not? If anyone is getting together it would be the two mains Hayate and Freyja…
