Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo – 02

KonoSuba - Well, I thought Hyoizaburo was an impressive name

The daughter of YuiYui and Hyoizaburo!

winter15-highw It’s kind of weird to write about a show that starts after everything else. Other shows are getting to things, and the one you’re writing about is still introducing things, and it feels a little behind. But that doesn’t mean it’s not fun to watch in the paaaaast.

Leave It to Me!

KonoSuba - Not as effective as she hoped

What, are you tickling it?

Unlike when you hear those words in Rabbit House, they don’t mean a whole heck of a lot when Aqua says them. I do like that even though the show is purportedly told through Kazuma’s point of view, he and Aqua seem to be sharing the ‘lead role’ fairly equally. What I think this does is frees up Aqua to be kind of a derpy character. She’s all talk, no walk. I’ll give her credit for trying to walk, but it’s more like she just stumbles.

KonoSuba - nom nom nom

Good work “distracting” the toads…

Sometimes the biggest source of stumbling is her own pride, which gets her in trouble as she and Kazuma are trying to complete a kill quest. Kill 5 giant toads in 3 days. How hard can that be, right? Yeah, when they say “giant”, they mean “giant”. These are the chupacabra (not Tuba-cabra) (and not Chupathingy) of frogs, stealing goats and other livestock from farmers, or sometimes even the farmer’s kids. And despite all of Aqua’s boasting, she just doesn’t have the power to take down a frog. Thankfully, they sit still and don’t fight back when they’re trying to eat someone.

POWERRRR!

KonoSuba - She can bring the sparkly

This looks like it’ll do the trick, right?

So obviously they need more firepower. Should be easy to recruit some, given how awesome Aqua obviously is (in her head), right? But it’s harder to find someone than they think, until Megumin shows up. My first thoughts about Megumin were that she was a little too much of a direct expy of Rikka Takanashi, eye patch and chuuni patter and hand movements all present. The only way she’d be more Rikka would be if she was voiced by Maaya Uchida. And if it’s more power you’re looking for, Megumin certainly seems to be the answer, as she loves explosion magic, the most powerful kind of magic. Too bad she never bothered with anything else, so she’s basically a nuclear weapon: one powerful explosion and done.

KonoSuba - But at a price

Just gonna take a little rest

I did like how she didn’t give up on being in the party, tho. Even to the point of using social shaming against Kazuma when he tried to ditch her. This girl knows how to get things done. And by done, I mean ‘to turn out in her favor.’ And maybe they’ll actually convince her to try some other kinds of magic (it’s not that she can’t because she’s tried and failed, it’s that she can’t because she doesn’t really want to do anything besides explosions). But maybe their other new party member, Darkness, will be able to help out more. I’m guessing not really.

KonoSuba - The seriousness falls apart

Well, she started out serious…

Bonus Blessings

I liked Megumin’s bit more the second time through, when you kind of get over the “oh, it’s Rikka” thing. And I think that the show is doing a really good job with the call back jokes, like bathtime for Aqua (and now Megumin), or the being eaten by frogs thing. It goes back to the well, but isn’t taking too much water each time. And it’s not allowing too much time to get tired of any particular bit. They’ve got the comedic timing down really well in this show. And I also like the ED, with the tilt-shift perspective (I always like it when visual tricks are used).

Kazuma and Aqua, looks aside, could be the Nobby and Colon of this particular world. Separate they could be dangerous, but together they only present a danger to each other. With that the chuuni Megumin is a perfect addition, and we will just have to see what sort of rubber spoon the new girl is about.

But, funny episode, that’s what it has to do. My fantasy show is about the unfunny death stuff…

This series and Grimgar are basically taking the exact opposite approaches to deconstructing the “trapped in a fantasy world” genre. Both ways can make for a really great show when done well, and so far both shows have being doing it well. I like them both.

Aqua’s problem against the frogs was an issue with her approach, really. Because they’re very squishy, they’re pretty much immune to bludgeoning damage… like, say, punching them. Her punch actually is quite powerful: thanks to her absurdly high stats she can actually hit really really hard. It’s just that hitting these particular critters is a waste of time.

Also, she’s a priest. She should be using holy magic either to attack (cleric-types usually get some attack spells) or to buff her allies.

Her problem isn’t in her ability, it’s that she’s too dumb to figure out how to use her abilities effectively.

Spammy is imitating a giant frog and eating my posts again. Can someone cast explosion on it?

    • HannoX says:

Are you sure you want explosion used? It might pop other Spammies out of the ground.

Megumin is a good addition to this team of misfits. Now if Kazuma can just figure out how to have her cast explosion without making matters worse. However, as much as she loves making things go BANG! I suspect she’d use explosion on a single goblin. Yep, she’s going to be a real problem for him. And I’m sure Darkness will bring her own problems with her.

These girls are enough to make an otaku swear off harem fantasies.
