I completely agree with Shirobako!
At first when it aired I watched up to episode 2 and felt it wasn’t worth continuing at the time as I was juggling 15+ other series alongside university and part-time work. However, my brother watched it all the way through and kept on harping about how great it was and that no one believed him.
I decided to watch it again when I had more time (once I finished all the final assignments) and boy oh boy was I wrong about dropping this show. I don’t know how much attention it got during its air, but amongst the people I hang with nowadays who are into anime, I hear nothing from them about Shirobako so for me it felt like a series that was overlooked completely.
Having seen and read Bakuman, and knowing that P.A Works was behind this, I really hated myself for dropping such a hidden gem. I fricken cried near the final few episodes when they brought in Shizuka to play the little sister. It was so touching!! All the characters are either lovable or characters that you love to hate. I’m constantly annoyed at Tarou throughout the series, but I eventually see the comedic-relief he brings to the show as actual comedy and not annoyance.
For such an anime that talks about the anime production process, you could really feel the authenticity behind it and it came through a lot in the different characters and their own roles in making something. Reminds me of Bakuman and how much these two series fulled me up with enthusiasm *cough* Hoshi *cough*
But yeah, it was my hidden gem of the season and after many, many, many months since I last visited Metanorn, this was the first post I read and seeing Shirobako really made me want to comment something.

Glad to see you around again, Tofu! I think Shirobako’s primary success stems from how eye-opening it is to most people. I don’t think many had a clear idea of the process behind producing an anime, so fans of the “medium” were glad to learn about how what they love so much is made.
If you’re interested in the animation specifically, there was a panel at Anime Central a couple of years ago that went over animators known for their distinct style and why animation matters for storytelling. The panel is uploaded as a 16 video playlist on YouTube. The length is a little intimidating, but I recommend giving it a watch.

Actually there was an episode of Hayate no Gotoku that did show the characters working as slave labour in an animation studio. Also, there is a Di Gi Charat omake on a visit to the animation studio.

Sorry, friend, but I’m not. The romance and slice of life genres don’t do it for me because I find them terribly sluggish and boring. Interest in that is pretty much non-existent because there is no hook to them. I’m just not the kind of person who is wired into that stuff. But good for you if you’re enjoying it.

Ahh… fair enough 🙂 I love romcom’s but not all of them. There has to be something unique to it for me to enjoy it or else it’d be boring. For Ore Monogatari, the love is logical and not dreamlike. Sure some parts are exaggerated, but that just adds to the comedy 😀
I was so happy to hear Hikasa sing again in Shingeki’s ED song. For such a hyped up series, I’m glad she’s getting a lot more attention! And how could I not love her role in KyoAni’s new series Hibike where she plays as Aoi Saitou! I mean it’s fricken KYOANI and it’s another MUSIC ANIME! I’m in so much love~
Also her role as Freya in DanMachi is exciting! Seeing Yoko play a more villainous character is a nice change. I haven’t started Owari no Seraph yet but she’s got two roles in that series so I can’t wait to get started on it after I finish marathoning Plastic Memories up to latest (I’m going in Alphabetical order).

I hope you’ll trust my judgment when I say step to it on Seraph of the End/Owari no Seraph. It’s a good show and all you need to do is keep an open mind. I will tell you the first six episodes are necessary to lay the story’s groundwork. The name of Yoko Hikasa’s character in Seraph is Horn Skuld.

To put it succintly:
Almost all the fantasy shows that I like, I start late. This particularly applies to the long-running ones. The example I’m going to use is Shagukan no Shana which I started only because someone recommended it.
*thumps the load of virtual wiki printouts on the tables* I do these series with that much information, ie everything from character data to world data/magic fountains/technobabble. Which ends up why I refuse to use or tolerate any of the lame english translation of the titles in SnS. Reciting off the Titles from memory:
Enpatsu Shakugan Uchite: Shana
Chosei no Yomeite: Margery
Banjo no Shite: Wilhemina
Sairei no Hebi: Show ▼
Owari no Seraph looks like it is going to be one of those show, what is likely going to happen is watching backwards from 12/13 to 1.
From experience, yes, animation production commitees can fuck things up. Like how they turned chunks of Shana/Shana Second into SoL school dorama. I do not care about yoshida. I want to know why the Flame Hazes and Crimson Denizons are fighting this unending war. SnS III was the truest of the 3 series. To put this in simple perspective, imagine some idiot on the team decided “Hey, let’s inject SoL school dorama in Seraph!”. I’d imagine you’d arrange for GARcher to kill this fool?
So yes, if OnoS (hey, good shorthand! 😛 ) goes as planned, then you might be seeing more chunks of blocky text in 2 seasons’ time. 🙂

Agreed on meeting Soma. After everything I’ve seen on Shokugeki no Soma so far, I’d pay good money for the food he makes. He uses the most out of the box methods.
Yeah, I can see Pokémon or even Dragon Ball Z being one of the earliest gateways to anime for anyone born in our generation. Speaking of the former, the game franchise is supposed to be making its 20 year mark this year.
It’s hard to believe that anyone who starts watching anime is suddenly going to stop. It’s pretty addictive and you can even go as far to say it’s a drug (At least it isn’t life threatening and doesn’t impair the mind and body). Sooner or later, you find something to your liking.
Akame ga Kill! Gets points for good story and fights. The best part comes from all the uncensored action. If someone gets decapitated, they won’t hesitate to show. A lot braver than most animes of late. Akame vs Esdeath for the win! Akame looks alluring with ghoulish eyes.
I think all the writers are night owls as much as the commentators. I don’t find myself sleepy until after midnight the next day.
It’s probably better to be rich than famous. From my point of view, the latter mostly brings unwanted attention. Some people actually manage to be rich and maintain a low profile.

What’s appealing is the fact that it’s based on Log Horizon. There are other anime that have gotten game adaptations, and the reason why people buy those is mostly because they were fans of the show. The fact that Log Horizon is set in a game just adds to that attraction.
