50 things you didn’t know about Samsura

doraekira

Kawaii?

spring15-samsWhelp, here goes.  I’m gonna spill all these personal details about myself to completely anonymous strangers on the internet.  That’s right, all my juicy secrets, revealed for you readers.  Years later, when I’m running for office/about to be indicted for fraud, you lucky people will get to call CNN and say “Did you know before Samsura became famous/infamous he was a total weeb?”

1. Who is your favorite male anime character?

Well, right now I am absolutely head over heels for Klaus from Kekkai Sensen (Are you reading my posts?  Make sure to refresh regularly!)  But my all time favorite has to be Hanma Yujiro, the man who dropped kicked George W. Bush out a window and beat up a caveman.

3496194-491590-hanma_yujiro__by_kalduin_d35ailn_2_

Man, Fox News would FLIP if they saw this!

2. Who is your favorite female anime character?

You can’t make me choose between Yuigahama and Yukinoshita!

3. What is your favorite anime soundtrack?

I’ve actually imported a couple anime soundtracks.  My favorites that I own are the Gintama OST (which has a lot of surf rock) and the Mononoke OST (for its sound out of the edo era).  Though I am so splurging when that Mekakucity  M’s comes out.

4. What is your favorite anime opening + animation?

Honey Flash!  You know an opening is amazing when the same song has been used since 1973.  Though this is the 90’s version, which is my personal favorite.

5. What is your favorite anime ending with animation?

I personally think Nagi Yanagi has the best voice out there right now in the Jpop scene.  Her voice really suits me whatever mood I’m in.

6. What is your favorite anime scene?

This is one of the first scenes I remember seeing and thinking “this is anime!”  It is the very last episode of the original Inuyasha TV series, when Kagome and Inuyasha combine there powers to break out of the Demon Statue’s belly.  That scene still stands out to me today.

7. If you could meet an anime character who would it be?

I’d have to say it would be “Mad Bull” John “Sleepy” Estes.  Not only would he really liven up my time in NYC, but he would take a knife to the heart and a bullet to the butt for his friends.

best pickup line ever
8. What anime character is most similar to you in terms of personality?

Well, I would probably be someone like Ozu from Tatami Galaxy.  I have a twisted mind and a twisted soul, fortunately those things don’t show up on my face to often.

9. What is your favorite thing about anime?

First off, I am a sucker for the Shonen formula.  If I ever got a tattoo, it would say “Friendship Effort and Victory.”  Other than that though, I love it when anime can discard things like logic, reality, or good taste to become truly entertaining.

10. What is your least favorite thing about anime?

Self insert characters.  I don’t need a carbon copy of a bland protagonist in every light novel/VN/anime/manga so that I can feel fulfilled.

11. Who are your favorite anime couple?’

Personally, I think the best romances are Josei ones.  So for me, it has to be Ran and Hibi from Ran and the Grey World Around Her.  They start out hating each other, become jealous when one goes on a date with a third party, but in the end they cry when separated and get intimate when they are together.  And they are really beautiful characters.

12. Who is your favorite anime animal?

I have great respect for all the animals that were brutally murdered for the sake of showing just how tough these tough guys are.  I mean you, 50 foot python that got caught in a back breaker.  And you, polar bear with your throat punched out.  But I’ll always remember you, tiger with your head ripped off by a small dog.

13. What anime would make a good game?

Air Gear done like Jet Grind Radio.  In many ways, that is the game of my dreams.  Just put some rockets in my shoes and take off!

14. What game would make a good anime?

So I’m an obsessive BL fan.  By which I mean Borderlands.  Those fun characters and interesting mechanics would be very fun to watch.  Especially since the game already looks like a cartoon.

15. What was the first anime you ever watched?

I know I saw things like Pokemon and Digimon without realizing they are anime.  But Inuyasha really was the thing that made me realize that this stuff is “Strait out of Japan” “They’re not cartoons, they’re Anime.”

16. Do you think you’ll ever stop watching anime?

Eventually, I’ll probably stop watching or maybe pull back on the number of shows I watch.  But I’ll always come back to you baby, I could never leave you.

17. What is your favorite genre of anime?

I’m a real fan of martial arts anime.  Grappler Baki is one of the greatest works of cinema ever, and you can never not smile when Kenshiro is blowing up some goon’s head.

18. What is your least favorite genre of anime?

Sports anime are super hit or miss with me.  I love say Eye-shield 21, but can’t stand Yowapedal.  I really like Kuroko, but Slam Dunk is just annoying.

19. Are you open about watching anime with people you know?

Yep, I’ve been blessed to be around people who also watch anime.  I didn’t even know my friend was a Gundam Super Fan till I brought up the fact that I watched Garzey’s Wing just to loose all connection with reality.

20. Have you ever been to Japan?

Never, though maybe I will in the near future.

21. What anime was the biggest let down for you?

Tenjo Tenge.  I checked it out after loving Air Gear, but that show really wasn’t enjoyable at all.  You can tell Oh! Great stepped up his game with Air Gear.

22. What anime was better then expected?

I thought I would hate Cross Ange after its first HORRIBLE episode.  But the show really became an amazing experience after it decided to stop being awful.

23. What is the best anime fight scene?

The Naruto episode with the 10 Puppets vs 100 still stands out as one of my favorite fight scenes of all time.  Plus, the blurry body stuff isn’t as prevalent as in later Naruto fights.

24. Who is your anime waifu?

I’m not really someone who gets involved in the best girl conversation.  That being said, if I had to pick a single anime character to spend a lot of time with, I’ll say Jolyne Kujo is a pretty rad chick through and through.  Plus, she is a Jimi Hendrix fan so that is a plus in my book.

25. What was your favorite video game as a child?

I clocked a ridiculous amount of time into Mario Tennis for the GBA.  It was an RPG and a TENNIS game!  It was almost made for me!

26. Most Embarrassing moment?

Actually, in my anime club, there is a regular event where a club member will give a power point presentation on a manga they recommend.  I decided to do a presentation on Lady Snowblood, a Kazuo Koike masterpiece.  If you want to know why this was really awkward, look up the phrase “Toichi Haichi”

27a. Can you drive?

Yes.

27b. Do you own a car?

Not really, I pay a fee for use of my dad’s care.

28. Are you mature?

NOPE.  Not in the slightest.  Sure, I may pretend to be wise or knowledgeable, but its all a ruse!

Miku-Zaku-Day-002-2014030929. What year were you born?

1994, the same year the Baki the Grappler OAVs came out!  It was a match made in heaven.

30. Do you prefer cats or dogs?

Cats, I really have a phobia of dogs to be honest.

31. Describe yourself physically.

I have slightly tan skin, I am slightly under 6 feet tall, and a fairly skinny fella.  My hair is black from beard to hair, and when I don’t shave I look like someone from the Middle East.  Funny, because my family is all Eastern European descendants.

32. What would you name your first child?

Probably something stereotypically Jewish.

33. What is the worst injury you have ever had?

Fortunately, this is the worst, which is very minor.  So one night when I was in middle school, I forgot to turn off my lamp before going to sleep.  This was a non-fluorescent bulb, so as the light was left on the bulb got really hot and melted the lamp.  Then it fell on my mattress and burnt a hole into it.  Overnight I rolled into the bulb Twice, but I honestly thought I had gotten stung, and really didn’t want to wake up.  So as a result I got a small burn mark, and hole in my bed, and a melted lamp.  At least my house didn’t burn down!

34. What is your worst habit?

I often times have a need to keep my body moving.  That leads to me either playing with my hair, tapping on thins, or even shaking my legs like a dog wags its tail.

35. Do you drink or smoke?

I don’t smoke, but I drink socially.

36. Do you have a tattoo?

Nope, but I already said what my first tattoo would be.

37. Are you a morning person or a night person?

Not only am I a night person, I actually power up the more fatigued I am.  I really wish I didn’t do some of my best work at 3 am, but that is what time it is as of this writing.

38. Have you ever slept past midday

All the time!  The latest I ever slept was till 5 in the afternoon.

39. Do you regret anything?

Lots of things.  My biggest regret is that there are many people in my life who I met and became friends with, but I haven’t kept in contact with many of them.  Even though I could use things like Facebook, I know those connections will be nothing but memories.

40. Can you count the number of friends you have on one hand?

No, but on two hands, yes.

41. Do you wear glasses?

Never had to, got almost 20/20 vision!

42. Are you a picky eater?

NO!!  In fact, I am the enemy of picky eaters!  There is no food I won’t try, and no limit to my gorging.  I may be skinny, but I’m a fat ass at heart.

43. Would you die for someone?

How on earth would I know!?!

brain44. If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

I’m tipping my hand, but I’m working on writing a story where the characters have superpowers.  My favorite one that I created was one who’s power only works when his skin is pierced.  What ever pierces his skin gets absorbed into his body, so things like blades or bullets are ineffective.  However, attacks that affect the outside like punches or chokes are still effective, so it isn’t a broken power.

45. Do you believe in the supernatural?

Is this the same as believing in a higher power?  I am a deeply faithful person, so I’ll say yes, I do believe in things beyond human understanding.

46. Would you rather be rich or famous?

Famous.  I’d be lying if I said I don’t enjoy being in the limelight, and with fame comes many opportunities to be rich.  Plus, being famous means people will have to pay attention to the pointless things I like to blather about.

47. Have you ever committed a crime.

Nope.

48. Pirates or ninjas? Time Traveler or ghost?

Pirates > Ninjas.  Ghost > Time Traveler.

49. Does someone have a crush on you?

Very unlikely, I haven’t really been putting myself out there.

50. Are you in a relationship?

No, my last one ended on a very sour note.

spring15-samsAnd that is I!  I have to admit, I really did enjoy this exercise.  Some of these questions are the kinds of things you would never even think about so that is fun.  Oh, and feel free to ask me more questions anyways, I’ll try and answer whatever else you might want to know.

I really like Nagi Yanagi as well. I’m kinda obsessed with her Owari Hoshi no Love Song album that she made under the Flaming June name, with the cheesy lyrics and stuff. I’m usually really drawn by her openings and endings.

    Show ▼

Is this an anime? If it is, I’d certainly watch but I’m not too keen on manga right now.

    Show ▼

OMG, I really love Borderlands, too and I couldn’t agree more. It would feel something like Kekkai Sensen on a huge wasteland.

    Show ▼

Haha… I kinda know what you mean… Even though I watched Yowapedal from beginning to end. The biggest problem is that a single event/match could take up from two episodes to a whole season! Or two! And that means cliffhangers galore, which I hate.

    Show ▼

Ok, should’ve been kept on the dark.

I’m like this as well. My whole family gets annoyed at me whenever we’re sitting on the same sofa or table.

    Show ▼

Right?! How the hell would you know? You could chicken out when needed, or be like “WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING?!” as you die for someone hahaha That’s… kinda scary.

    Kawaii?

I always knew that cat was up to no good. I feel kinda cheated by that image, as it makes me really want to see the big Doremon-lasagna monster.

Your biggest regret It’s really tempting to feel like that. But something cool can happen. You’ll probably get a friend or two from the mix that you’ll stick with. I’ve had a buddy for going on 30 years, and we see each other in passing maybe twice a year. But every time, it’s like no time has passed at all. My dad has a friendship that has lasted twice as long, he and his buddy are as different as night and day most of the time, but the friendship endures, and is of the same quality.

  3. Overcooled says:

Yay, so much material to find out your weakness! I mean, uh, great to get to know more about you, new blood. I can’t say I expected the Cutie Honey opening song to be your favourite.

That superpower of absorbing piercing objects sounds really cool! Never heard of something like that before. As a martial artist, I’m totally okay with punches and kicks but I’d be hard-pressed to fight someone wielding a gun. I’d be so strong with that power…

(Side note: I went back and read my 50 question thing from way back when and barely even recognized my answers. Did I even write that? )

    • Samsura says:

While I’m not really into the Mazinger and other super robot stuff he made, I am a definite fan of Go Nagai. Man, in can’t wait for the new devilman show

As for Cutie Honey, I’ve seen the original, the 90’s show, and the 2004 Gainax show. The Gainax one isn’t that good, the 90’s is a nice Shoujo work, but the original is my favorite.

  4. Di Gi Kazune says:

Unleash the mice on the blue cat!

    • BlackBriar says:

      Say what now?

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

Okay, I will take it that you are ignorant about Doraemon.

        Doraemon is a cat.
        That used to have ears.
        A Yellow cat with ears.
Then mice came and ate the ears off and he also turned blue.
That is why Doraemon is a cat, sans ears and blue.

I believe there is another version of the story. This is the one I’ve heard.

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

Addendum: And now we have a blue, earless cat who is deathly afraid of… mice.

  5. Foshizzel says:

    Gret job on this Samsura!

Hi5 for being a Gundam fan! Metanorn needs more fans of that and giant robots in general <3

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

Metanorn needs more fans of that and giant robots in general LOLis <3

      skylion would support that! 😛

    • Samsura says:

Sorry Fosh, I’m not really a big gundam fan. I am a fan of weird OAVs, hence the Garzey’s wing. I’ve seen 3.5 gundam shows in my life.

    • BlackBriar says:

      Fosh needs recruits! Stat!

Now I’ve got to ask: which genre has the biggest force on Metanorn? By that, I mean mechas, lolis, vampires etc…

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

        Slice of Life.

        • BlackBriar says:

*shivers at the mention of that* You’ve got to be kidding me…

          • Di Gi Kazune says:

It depends on how you classify stuff. Every series has multiple genres. Technically Slice of Life is a very, very, very, very, very broad category. And lets not talk about the overlap. For all intents and purposes, ecchi to me is not a category; otherwised almost everything would be in there. Neither is LOLi. Because virtually every show has their token LOLi/SHOta.

            To make my life easy:

Action: Selfexplanatory. This is another very, very, very, very encompassing category. Mecha and Mahou Shoujo are by definition share this but they go into their own category.
            Mecha: Selfexplanatory again.
            Mahou Shoujo: Selfexplanatory.
Fantasy: Selfexplanatory. Includes Scifi, but not mecha.
Slice of Life: Encompasses the usual mundane things that exist in the realworld. Romance falls squarely in here. Romance, not ecchi. (ie, virtually anything that doesn’t fall in the above.)

The key where things get put is the primary focus. Technically, if you think too much (which I realised I have done so…), the whole thing ends up as a spectrum with SoL/Action at the ends.

            So for example:
Seraph would be Fantasy/Action with a dash of SoL.
Unlimited GARcher Works would be Fantasy/SoL.
Prisma Miyu would be Mahou Shoujo/Slice of Life.
            SB69 is SoL. With subcategories.
            SNAFU is SoL.
            Hibike is SoL.
The cooking show is SoL, doused with liberal amounts of action.
            Etotama is Fantasy, SoL
DxD PORN BORN is Fantasy with liberal sprinkles of wierd SoL (ie, Skool)
Sidonia is Mecha with a sidedish of SoL.
Jojo is Action with no SoL.
            Subaru commercial is Mahou Shoujo/SoL.
            Sora no Method is SoL/Fantasy.
Aldnoah.Minus(all the crappy bits) is Mecha.
            Gundam is Mecha.
            Oreimo: Primary SoL.
            Yosuga no Wincest: SoL.
            The Haruhi Franchise: Fantasy/SoL
            Arslan: Fantasy/Action.
Pickingupgirlsindungeonsisabadidea: Fantasy with some SoL elements.
            Kekkai Sensen: Fantasy/Action.
            Nanoha/Nanoha Ass/Nanoha Movies: Prisma Illya.

Yes, you say there are further substratification but then you start getting smaller and smaller groups. (and bigger and bigger headaches).

So, I kid you not about the Slice of Life business. But feel free to divide and conquer (a good strategy) so that your vampires win. 😛

            Appendix:
Then there is the single category of: Di Gi Charat. Membership: One-nyo. E:3

  6. BlackBriar says:

I’d be careful sharing such sensitive information if I were you. You never know when someone might use it for blackmailing purposes and extortion. Information is power! 😛

This was a question I asked the writers when these types of posts were coming in droves: If you somehow had the ability to manipulate an anime’s story, would you do it, which anime and in what way would you see fit? Would you put your favorite character or creature in a story where it doesn’t belong?

  7. Rathje says:

Thanks for the recommendation of “Ran and the Grey World.” Just been spending the weekend plowing through it, and it is a fun story.
