First Impression – Show By Rock!!

Are you ready to rock!?

I think most of us are probably asking WHY bones? WHY?! I guess you could say that maybe they saw the success Sunrise had with Love Live that they decided to copy them by making an Idol themed anime that is also based off a game series, but is that a smart move for them? I know personally Bones has been on my WTF ARE YOU DOING list after that whole mess with Captain Earth…

——————————–

Too Much?

show by rock (5)

This CG might not be for everyone, but I liked it.

So I bet everyone is wondering the same thing right? What are you even doing Bones? I know the hot debate on this first episode is WHY did Bones decide to go full blown CG with those chibi furry SD characters? I don’t really know why other than maybe the director thought it was a good idea since the series is based off a video game? Personally I found it to be great and sure most people are gonna mock me by saying IT WAS TERRIBLE and just plain LAZY! Yeah I will give it to you on them being lazy by not animating mouths on the characters, but do really need to see mouth movements to understand that scene? I don’t think you do and besides have we ever seen CG that good looking in any anime? I dare you to name at least one full CG anime or scene that looked as good as Show By Rock; however with all things entertainment especially when it comes to anime we all have our own ideas what looks “good” because everyone has a preference towards certain art styles. I suppose it could have been worse, like the entire first episode could have been one giant CG fest and thankfully the rest of the episode managed to switch back to classic 2D animation. I don’t think we will be seeing anymore full CG scenes for a while because I can only imagine that putting a strain on the budget doing that every week unless you count the ED which is all CG.

Story Mode?

show by rock (2)

Cyan’s dream.

show by rock (3)

I can’t get over how cute Cyan’s catgirl form is <3

Besides the questionable CG usage the overall story seems to be about Cyan wanting to join the light music club, but she doesn’t have the courage to step up and join. I guess it also doesn’t help the fact that she is a bit shy which is something she will eventually overcome after spending time in that crazy idol universe! Speaking of that universe is anyone else surprised that she quickly accepted her fate without questioning how she gets back to the real world? I mean sure it’s a lot to take in all at once or will she find clues on how to get out from the other characters? I wonder if the other characters are just like her or is she the token “chosen one” that is going to save that world from danger? Also what are the badguys motives? Using music to take over the universe? That sounds like the plot ripped from Suite Precure which is music themed as well…so again there are so many questions to ask! Hopefully we get answers later on.

Extra Rock

Just as fabulous as Takuto from Star Driver.

HNNNGGGGG!

Indeed she is.

Were all asking the same questions.

End Thoughts

Wow Bones is on their A game when it comes to those cute character designs for the main girls! Like Cyan? Damn she is quite the cutie and I normally don’t care for cat girls all that much, but of course this is not Bones first time doing a cute series because they did animate Soul Eater Not which was also filled with moe characters. So did the CG turn you away from this? I have seen several anime forums bashing Bones like crazy for the use of CG in this episode resulting in a bunch of people dropping it after one damn episode! I guess some people have a low tolerance for things like that huh? I don’t plan on dropping this because I am very curious to see how the idol part comes into play and how the hell Cyan plans to return to her world.

Most people’s first impression to this show is:
FUCK. WHat the Fuck did I just watch.

    That was definitely mine too.

Actually they don’t need mouths because they are from Sanrio. Sanrio characters do not need mouths. Hello Kitty commands you.

The CG is indeed very slick. Very smoothly rendered. It makes Aoki Hagane’s look dated and one wonders WHY Aoki Hagane didn’t do it this slick.

Speaking of that universe is anyone else surprised that she quickly accepted her fate without questioning how she gets back to the real world?

NOPE. The balance scales scene explains all. (Why am I going -nya- -nya?!)

And where is Kokonoe Rin Takao Retoree? Here deredere is so sickenly cute that I go into DKA just seeing that.

Overall verdict: Diabetes inducing. Most people will say ugh/lolicon/blah2blah. That is what the usual wusses that cannot tolerate the amount of sickenly sweet, sugary, saccharine, diabetes inducing shows like this. In fact, I cannot think of a recent show that has as a glycaemic index this high. The only one I can think of at the moment is Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat. Fortunately for me, I have tolerance to this. Mwhahahaah!! Let’s see how long you last Fosh… 😛

    Trivia bits:
UMV’s Dr. Klaw is Kaijin Sabrac from Shana.
Retoree in the game is Sayaka. She also likes Sayaka figures on the youtube shorts. Here she is Takao. So much Tsuntsun and Deredere.

I completely disagree regarding Arpeggio of Blue Steel. The whole point there was to use an anime style. To my view, this pixarblob animation is the tired and old and overused thing: no texture, no shading, a bland sameness that has essentially stagnated the world of western animation. Hollywood releases 15 major movies each year that look exactly like this. Sure it’s smooth and shiny, but it’s not groundbreaking, and in my opinion it gets extremely limited as far as what kind of story you can make with it due to the cartoonishness of it.

I’d rather see Arpeggio of Blue Steel, Sidonia no Kishi, Karen Senki, or even the battle parts of KanColle the way they were, certainly not everything as blobby plastic characters. That’s fine if the goal is to sell cute plastic keychains, but not if you’re trying to tell a story.

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

Maybe, but Aoki Hagane didn’t render fluidly enough. the battleparts were fine. The rest looked like it was rendered in the early 2000s. Rendering farm power has come in leaps and bounds since then and it is no excuse now.

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

-_- what the fuck is with spammy. Please check.

Addendum: And Japan releases something like 15 series per season that look exactly the same.

      • skylion says:

Western Animation has become completely dogged by itself. Any creativity is seen as “quaint”. Underlining this is the fact that a property has to spring out of the gate like it’s pants are on fire. Another property is hot on it’s feet, from the same producers sometimes. Marathon? Go publish a book…

Having said that Disney is a creative whirlpool. Dreamworks is staying somewhat afloat on the writing end…

        • Di Gi Kazune says:

Disney has only regained their position recently. IIRC, after Lion King, things started sliding downhill during the Eisenberg era. Only in the past few years after they bought back Pixar and dumped Eisenberg, things started improving. Dreamworks(and Pixar) were the animation studios of the 2000s.

The same dogginess is happening in Japanese animation. Just look at the number of similar fanservice shows (with their usual variations). A good example would be… Winter 2015. Yes, 2015. Remember FantaNorn? ’nuff said.

Having said all that, after watching anime for more than a decade and a half, you develop a level of cynicism.

        • Di Gi Kazune says:

          Addendum:

Almost none of Disney’s animated works are original. They are just adaptations of a prior work. Frozen is an adaptation of Hans KristofAnnaSven’s The Snow Queen. Rewritten massively. And yet, it is a very big seller in Japan. Until recently, it regularly topped the BD weekly charts. When it sells 5-6k copies and tops the charts during quiet weeks and repeatedly returns, you know it is serious business. Most anime survive a week or two at the top. Frozen has done it for 30+ weeks.

      • Foshizzel says:

Again everyone has a preference on what looks GREAT and COOL to them and personally I hate using Arpeggio as a comparison every time this debate pops up! It’s just as bad as saying every dark magical girl series is Madoka.

  2. Di Gi Kazune says:

Obviously spammy couldn’t take the amount of diabetes. Comment resus here.

  4. Di Gi Kazune says:

    Ack, wrong one.This one.

  5. zztop says:

The anime is produced by Sanrio, the creators of Hello Kitty.
I’m expecting a Hello Kitty cameo at some point.

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

Hello, Hello Kitty, let’s start up the play~~

      *runs down to*

Hello Kitty. Furry Tail Theatre begin~~~~

    • Foshizzel says:

Ahhh I see very interesting! So I guess Bones is in some random partnership with the Hello Kitty people? I guess that works xD

  6. Highway says:

I thought this was fine. I mostly mentioned that the shift for the performances to the chibi mouthless pixarblobs was an obvious way to save money (given that this is the same technology they use for making direct-to-video Barbie DVDs, it couldn’t have cost them too much). They did fine with the textures and details on them for the most part. And the show was certainly more entertaining than I thought it would be. I’m kind of hoping that they switch back and forth with the school world and that Cyan’s bandmates are the people in the music club. I’d like that kind of way to tie it together.

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

Hello Kitty does not need mouths. >_>

    • Foshizzel says:

I’m kind of hoping that they switch back and forth with the school world and that Cyan’s bandmates are the people in the music club. I’d like that kind of way to tie it together

Yeah I don’t think that will be happening unless Cyan discovers some magical portal that sends her back or wakes up in her room in episode two? We shall see.

Yeaaaah my thing on the mouths being missing = were still able to understand whats up with the monster attacking those other band guys.

  7. Di Gi Kazune says:

    -____-

Double consecutive loss. Spammy is hyper today.

  8. skylion says:

Geez, I had some hopes for this one. I found the shifts in art hard to keep up with; good thing the plot wasn’t as shifty as that.

If it can settle down a bit, I might change me mind.

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

You expect it to settle down? I don’t. This show belongs to the category of ‘either you can tolerate the diabetes inducingness or not’.

Aaaaanddd… What plot? To put it this way: No expectations of this show; found WTF in it and now already addicted.

    • Foshizzel says:

Well I think the video-game-y stuff will go away eventually otherwise the WHOLE episode would have used the CG look.

More for me I guess I found it fun with and without CG.

  9. zztop says:

Never mention Humpty Dumpty in front of Maple; he goes berserk when people do that.

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

Speak of humpty dumpty, did anyone note that in the OP where she is dreaming of playing in the band, the other girls are basically the human versions of Plasmagica?

      Twintail blonde playing blue guitar.
      Long purple hair playing guitar.
      Fluffy hair on drums.

      • Highway says:

I thought that was obvious to everyone, that the band she joins in the game world is the band she wanted to join before. That’s why my other comment was about shifting back and forth between worlds.

        • Wanderer says:

I just went back to look, and the RL girls actually don’t match the haircolors (aside from the blonde), but they definitely match the styles. The real world girls have real world hair, but still it’s pretty obvious that Plasmagica is just anthropomorphic versions of that band.

More Retoree please, nya. Her response to Cyan’s neko-isms is just adorable, nya.

  10. Di Gi Kazune says:

It IS an ad for the game. There is no other reason.

And I am still going: WTF did I just watch/pickup.

  11. Namaewoinai says:

Errr…I Got a question for this show…is this show is for kids? errr…seriously why i see some sort of reference to “Hello Kitty” or something…OK it’s Sanrio Alright…
GASP…SANRIO…Oh my god…i going to feel trembling for this…still, i must bear it.

Hopefully, Sanrio is going to be calm for that…i doubt it!

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

No. It an advert for the game which is geared towards adults. Plus it airs in a latenight slot. And shockingly, no fanservice!

      • Namaewoinai says:

Yeah i know, it is a late night show, but it’s not about that, it’s about the company (sanrio). At first I thought sanrio is only for kids…But Actually it feels like they had suddenly change. i mean i never know about Sanrio much, that’s all.

  12. d-LaN says:

Best first episode I’ve seen so far in this season! The bait and switch at the beginning is brilliant lol and I wonder how many ppl was fooled into thinking its K-ON at first (`▽´) Not to mention that when the entire thing went CG I thought I was watching an US production with JP dubs XD Those are some really good CG even by anime standards. Too bad that quite a lot of ppl don’t appreciate the quality CG though….
Also, I can’t help but notice that even though both SBR!! and Kekkai Sensen looks good its obvious that Bones pour more budget into this. Not that I mind since everything is pretty well animated.

As for the characters, I love all almost all of them! Cyan and the rest of the Plasmagica members are just so moe :3 Trichonika cat boys is good as well with Miyan channeling his entire BISHOUNEN POWAH into it. Although Kai and Riku name immediately reminds me of KH. But what I am truly looking forward is the Shigancrimsonz (chuuni?) cat boys that going to show up in the next episode XD Definitely following this.

Also, I noticed several things that I wasn’t aware during the first viewing when I rewatch the first episode:

-The “thing” that pulled Cyan into the game look rather similar to the evil boss dude and its almost certain that she the singer he mentioned at the end.

    – The brief view of the game Cyan is playing on her phone also reveals that its the same exact Dark Monster that show up in the episode later.

    – The 3 Plasmagica band members looks rather similar to the band members that Cyan wants to join in her school…..

Seiyu fun fact: The boss of Unicorn something something is voiced by Takaya Kuroda (Kiryuu Kazuma in Yakuza) if I am reading it correctly.

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

ShingancrimsonZ are not cat boys. I believe they’re a crow, lion, leopard and the otherone I can’t recognize. Well… you *could* call most of them catboys.

Seiyu fun fact: The boss of Unicorn something something is voiced by Takaya Kuroda

Yes, Shana’s Kaijin Sabrac. If anyone remembers, he’s like literally nearly impossible to kill.

Re: Quality of CG animation. The best CG animation in a TV series isn’t Japanese. It’s American and is the standard all others I use to gauge. Guess who? 🙂 Then again, you’d expect them to be of that standard.

      • d-LaN says:

I don’t watch US TV animation nowadays and I am judging SBY!! strictly by Japanimation standards.

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

        Crow is a hedgehog…

This week, all the girls in the intro get their kemomomimi and shippo!

    • Highway says:

Is the CG technically good? Yes, I won’t argue much with that (although again, using plastic hair and no mouth movements with almost nothing in the way of collisions or interaction reduces the difficulty significantly). Is it an *interesting* style technically or artistically? That’s where I think the problem is.
