First Impression – Punchline

Are you ready for some epic punching?!

I still swear that MAPPA kidnapped all of old Gainax and Trigger to create Punchline! That said what did you think of this panty filled episode? Is it something you plan on watching more? I certainly hope so because the first episode was so damn fun and extremely off the wall! Anyway for the first impression Skylion joined me and we talked about our top five moments from this episode.

Hmmm… I wasn’t sold on this premiere. A bit too ridiculous, if not forced as a whole in my opinion. A statement coming from someone who’s watched and enjoyed Kill la Kill, mind you. Something here just didn’t click for me. Then there’s the heroine’s name. “Strange Juice”? No disrespect to the girl using it to identify herself but surely the creator could’ve come up with something better because I can’t think or even say it out loud and take it seriously. I don’t know about the other viewers but it was a poor first outing. For now, the three episode rule is in effect.

What’s so weird about girls voicing guys? 😉 That’s kind of something in the norm in the anime industry. Like skylion pointed out, even Eri Kitamura did a surprising job creating a masculine voice for male character Mahiro in both seasons of Haiyore! Nyaruko-san. It happens as well with English dubs. Naruto voiced by Maile Flanagan. DBZ’s Young Gohan during the Toonami days by Stephanie Nadolny (Who voices Young Goku for Dragon Ball GT) and DBZ Kai’s version by Colleen Clinkenbeard.

How much is ridiculous enough? Kill la Kill, as you’ve mentioned?

Strange Juice is a fine name. It’s far more interesting than the generic hero names we’ve been stuck with for going on 8 decades now. Appending -man or -woman or -boy or -girl after a animal name or a adjective is not very creative or interesting, neither is putting a military rank in front of a noun. Superhero names are kinda dumb to begin with. But then, that’s the legacy of when older teen/early twenties writers and/or artists sold an idea to an editor or publisher that couldn’t be arsed to care provided it sold to kids. But they gotta be called something, and much like bands these days, all the obvious names got taken already.

As for why she calls herself Strange Juice; she seems like a nice girl, and we’ve just met, I’m not going to presume anything.

I guess that’s the limit. It’s due to the idea of a kid, just by looking at a girl’s underwear, turning into an otherwise nuclear bomb strong enough to bring humanity mass extiction. Okay, hundreds of miles is a fine line but the entire planet’s population wasted? That’s too out there, even for me. A disastrous event capable of happening at any time, at a moment’s notice. Someone that dangerous should be quarantined or taken out. Imagine the mass panic if people got wind of that.

        • skylion says:

Well, how much explosive power comes from parental groups over broadcast standards? The idea, as you say, is absurd, but no more absurd than censoring something that is obvious, or Lucas walking back Star Wars to make it more “kid friendly”. Not when we have an internet culture where any kid can look up the word “boob” or “violence” and get more pictures than a mother or father would be aware of or could ever have gotten when they were that kid’s age.

Sure, when you go for disaster, why play small, right? Dunno, but if you pay attention to how the events are handled, he rather is being contained, for the given value of contained…..nothing is perfect the first time.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yep gotta agree with SKylion on this one if you look at superhero names in general they are all dumb! They usually just add whatever+man and BOOM you got a superhero! Batman, Antman, Spiderman, Aquaman and Ironman? Yeah those sound dumb…

Nothing wrong with it at all in fact I want to see more of it in the future.

      • BlackBriar says:

Those names get away because I grew up learning them so they don’t sound ridiculous when said after such a long time. It’s the names of present-day made superheroes or superhero names of works from long ago recently getting any spotlight at all (“Kick-Ass” for example) that are quick to be judged.

*akagami has lost the bait to unknown source!*
      *akagami’s fishing attempt has failed!*

Mm, can someone save my post when they have a chance, in case that wasn’t clear?

  3. Di Gi Kazune says:

Falcon Punch! Wait. This one is pantsu punch. My bad.

  4. Overcooled says:

Took me a long time to realize Strange Juice was a pun on Orange Juice and Punch Line was a pun on Panty Line…But now I think it’s genius.

  5. JPNIgor says:

Let’s see… Watching it really did remind me of that ME!ME!ME! weird videoclip featured on those short animation series. Those sudden explosion of nonsense and weirdness only added up to it. I don’t know if this is even a valid argument .-.

Well, whatever, gonna keep it. The premise of the world exploding every time a boy gets excited is too much to not see.

    • skylion says:

…I can see that connection, but only just…

      • JPNIgor says:

I guess what hit me most was the artstyle and the BGM when something bad (or good, depending on the POV) is happening.

And the unexpected keeps coming back.

        • Foshizzel says:

I loveeeee the artstyle! It is sooooo great! Also agreed it does have a certain Me!Me!Me feel to it.

  6. akagami says:

You know, I can handle large amounts of silliness. I can bend my mind and accept preposterous things that could never happen in reality. But my mind almost broke at using a straw as a weapon. I mean.. wut? Can’t… comprehend….

At this point, I’m pretty much 50/50 drop, but figured since I was already watching, would continue to at least the end.

To my surprise, it actually managed to reel my interest back in from the brink of “don’t care this is so stupid”. The ghost trick was interesting enough, and the little funny bits were great and fit quite well within the progression of the story without feeling forced (like the cat video and the mahou shoujo transformation).

I do feel indifferent about the whole asteroid-causing-extinction shtick though. Maybe they’ll weave it into the story on why it’s important (or not, and maybe it’s just a fanservice plot mechanism). I don’t feel like it’s adding anything of worth to the story at the moment though.

I’m interested enough that I’ll watch some more. I want to find out more about the world and their powers ^^ And wow those are some daring pantsu~

Bonus: Kugimiya Rie playing a non-tsundere character! Loving it!

    • Foshizzel says:

Lol yeah this series is quite silly indeed and agreed the fact that Strange juice uses a straw to fight with is both crazy and funny! I hope we see other weapons, but I think the straw is the only weapon for now.

I think that is the general rule of this series most of us watching are 50/50 on keeping up with this or dropping it because it’s kinda crazy and ecchi filled.

Kugimiya Rie playing a non-tsundere character! Loving it!

Yep! Most people think that’s all she does but nope she does have a lot of non Tsundere roles.

  7. Kyokai says:

It has a very interesting start, even when downright silly. I’m happy that MAPPA is not sticking to a typecast of show like most of other studios, even when they have kidnapped some real nice talent to make this possible. I’ll be watching this for a 3-episode test.
