Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru no Darou ka – 02

Ragnarockinoppai!

The previous week has been a wild one for A Certain Oppai LOLi, but more on that later. This week we continue with Better Goddesses and Dungeons, as Bell tries to listen to some sage advice and possibly survive as a result.

Is it Wrong to Pick a Fight with a Washboard?

DanMachi 02-1

Hestia is all fired up!

So in the first couple of scenes, Bell has two very lovely ladies give him the best advice he could possibly listen to. Both pieces boil down to one very specific thing: don’t die. It sound’s like great advice, and not at all a hard rule of thumb to lose sight of, as lot’s of us manage to do it every single day. Of course, all of us aren’t dungeon crawlers by trade, so we can afford to watch Bell walk and even stumble around in his own boots. But it looks like his feet have been forced, and he has to stomp the best he can.

DanMachi 02-4

Ada Ada! Dinner and a show…

We can leave Bell alone for a minute, as the main thrust of this episode was the Business of the Gods. While it is technically true that they have stepped down from the higher planes of existence, and those actions meant they were vastly powered down, they still possess all the charm, attitude, and influence they had from those old times. Freya as the goddess of beauty must be rather bored of all the attention she has traditionally been getting. This looks to be something of the cause for her setting her sights on one of her sister god’s Familia; yearning for the challenge of the object you can’t readily have. It’s a plot that Loki has seen, and is not at all happy with. But count on the squabble. It was a sight to see both Loki and the LOLi at each other’s throats. It wasn’t about throats was it? This suggests both the past and the possible future. Hestia was very upfront asking some personal business about Aiz. It didn’t win her any points with the chippai redhead.

DanMachi 02-6

The power of the ORZ!

But for all that bluster between deities and demigods, the real thrust of the story is between Hephaistos and Hestia. I felt very sorry for our featured goddess again in her feelings towards Bell, as her attitude is so downward turned. She is very harsh on herself, claiming he does everything for her, and she does nothing for him. That didn’t look like most of the first episode I watched; getting food for them both when he’s pulling in pennies, keeping the home fires burning. Perhaps she is feeling the pull of guilt. Not being a better positoned goddess for him to hitch his wagon is heavy on her mind. Adding to this, she is still very much obfuscating Bell’s growth in power, and that is in turn powered by jealousy over Aiz. So she relies on mysterious ways to push him forward, and remind him that he has great value to her as a person first, and Famila second. Plus she cannot seem to full identify his new skill to it’s fullest. Also, it was probably difficult to find the boy, but finding another doesn’t seem impossible. To me, that underlines his overall value to her, and her own personal hopes as well. In short they both mean the world to each other. Sounds like both gods and people never really change…

DanMachi 02-7

Now that’s a knife…

I also love Hephaistos as a character. I have a fond feeling for the Greek myth in particular ( I love steampunk, and in some fantasy-tech tropes he would be the go-to god), and her words and actions so far. You can tell she has a soft spot for Hestia, and perhaps loves her in her own way. But it is a tough love, and in a few sentences, Hephaistos gave us a ton of back-story on the oppai LOLi goddess. Hestia has been down, and didn’t quite manage to look up. It was gratifying to look at the forge-goddess as she came to see the Hestia she always wanted to see. How down and out has Hestia been before this? Did she ever appreciate mortals to begin with?

DanMachi 02-10

This ain’t monkey business

Which makes his actions at episodes end (oh a lovely chase in Daedalus’ maze) seem both rash, and the best thing he could do given the circumstances they find themselves in. Freya must have quite a bit in the bag to risk Bell in that fashion; either she has more control in the situation then we know, or she can revive him if things turn to the awful south. It’s that or the writers are playing Bond Villain/Joker is Still In Control in Jail, and they needed to live up to the adventure tag once per episode. Regardless it does make a stark contrast between the times they spent at play during the festival, and desperate straights. Also it underlines one key thing about the current Hestia Familia. They have the spark, they just both need to fan the flames.

A few extra party favors

DanMachi 02-happy

Hestia wins!

DanMachi 02-8

I’m just gonna call this a bonus sexy metaphor…..

DanMachi 02-9

Gotta go with the classics

DanMachi 02-11

Uh oh, cliffhanger…

Oh, no. Did they just ratchet up the false tension by not letting Hestia give him the new knife. Yeah, I know, running, jumping, trying to not be monkey chow…yadda yadda yadda. “Here Bull-kun, it’s dangerous to go alone. Take this” would have taken all of five seconds. Tops. But I guess they have to save the great unveiling, and maybe complete the sexy metaphor, for a much bigger scene. All in the all the show is growing on me, and I’ve come to appreciate how the world works, from the gods, right down to the dungeon (ah, that still needs work). So, any takers on Syr and Freya being the same person?! C’mon….you know you see it…

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick up a Goddess on Pixiv?

If you’ve been living under a rock, then…come out…that’s no place to live. You’re missing out on the internet stuffs. Even if you only frequent the anime portions of social media for the briefest of excursions you’ve seen this. The Hestia Explosion. Some find terror in it…while other’s just keep adding to the pile. But regardless, isn’t it nice to know the Oppai LOLi Goddess’ Familia is growing?

ANN article: Fans Try to Replicate Effects of Hestia’s String

  3. zztop says:

A Japanese tweet had this to say on the appeal of Hestia’s dress:
“The breast-string that raises her breasts when she raises her arms is a brilliant invention. I think it should get this season’s ‘good design’ award. And although your eyes go straight to her breasts, her waist and underarms have just the right degree of chubbiness…. It’s godly. GODly.”
(The two words in the Japanese are kami, the Japanese word for a god, which is often translated “godly” when applied to animation; and the actual English word GOD.)

    • skylion says:

I’ve never been happy with the translation of kami as upper case “g” God. That points to a very specific and very defined concept of one religion. But then, I can’t provide a workable alternative, so I will leave the thought there.

But…dat tweet. They need to get out more…

Also, still waiting to see the DxD girls in Hestia’s dress. I know someone drew Yuigahama Yui from Love Snafu in Hestia’s dress already.

    • skylion says:

…they’ve shoved everyone else into it, even a GunPla so all’s fair in strings and fashion…

Which website are all the fanart on? Pixiv, or others?

        • skylion says:

Pixiv has been the main place, I think. But that soon filters to other imageboards, and then social networks. She trended on my twitter feed, which isn’t really that big a deal, so that makes me wonder if it trended for lots of others off the anitwitter grid…

A well-endowed loli goddess against a tall washboard. Damn, someone needs a handicap because it’s a given who wins here.

So in other words, before meeting Bell, Hestia was pretty much a binbougami mooching off Hephaistos. I’d love to see his reaction upon finding that out. I guess her biggest fear is Bell ultimately not needing her anymore if he gets too powerful. However, it’s already clear he isn’t the type to do such a thing.

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

      Pettanko wins.

      • BlackBriar says:

Wrong, buddy. The well-endowed loli wins this battle royale. And you should be branded a traitor to lolis for not supporting her. I expected better of you. 😉

        • Di Gi Kazune says:

Defender of pettanko LOLis. Oppai does not count. Akatsuki would be unhappy. 😛

          • BlackBriar says:

How sad. You need to be converted by the harem king Issei Hyoudou. He once said “A woman’s breats are heavier than a man’s life”. Take this to heart, son.

    • skylion says:

As you lead on, his reaction would not be at all unkind. She’s afraid of the power he has now, and how someone else may be driving that power instead of her. In that situation she could do something that could instill a reaction in Bell should would’t want…

I almost kept expecting Yato to gatecrash the God party and get permanently banned after getting piss-drunk, throwing up in Hermes’s feathered hat, and ruining 5 silk dresses, Ganesha’s favourite tapestry and nearly all the buffet food with his hand sweat.

Had you heard about That Girl (hestia) seems to be the primary attraction to most dojins there

(Danbooru or Gelbooru) i mean wow…wow…kinda but applauding but…nah…it ain’t commendable if you as me!

  8. belatkuro says:

I understand why some wanted Hestia to give the knife already but it’s a very special knife and has some added procedures in it which you’ll see next episode. Which brings me to the timing of the cliffhanger. They really could have ended it at an earlier point just when the Silverback monster appeared instead of stretching it to Bell imprisoning Hestia. Then questions about the knife wouldn’t have surfaced. They actually met with Eina before the monsters escaped. I guess it makes for a great cliffhanger but it brought some nagging questions along the way. Oh well.

When the anime was announced and it was announced that it was Matsuoka who’ll voice Bell and TomatoTomatsu Haruka voicing Eina, I guessed that either Ai Kayano or Yoko Hikasa would have a role somewhat here. They seem to get to work with Matsuoka very often. Hikasa is perfect for Freya as someone lusting for Bell.
While this stunt that she pulled off looks risky, she doesn’t mind. If he comes out of this, he’ll be much stronger. If he dies, she’ll just follow his soul to heaven even at the cost of leaving her own Familia. That’s how much she’s been attached to Bell.

There are definitely speculations that Syr and Freya are the same person but I really doubt it. For one thing, I don’t think the goddess of beauty would work in a pub all day even if Bell drops by in the morning and at night occasionally. I’m also not aware of Freya having powers to shapeshift. The power that she’s willing to (ab)use while no one is looking is more of immobilizing people by seduction which is how she got into those monster cages and slight brainwashing with how the Silverback is focused only on Hestia. A lot more circumstances point to the connection though but I’ll stand in the opposite camp of this speculation.

And while I haven’t done browsed enough fanarts much last week, I knew that Hestia’s popularity exploded there. It’s pretty surprising really, especially with how they’re focusing on the string. I never really bothered with it before when reading the manga and LN. Now it’s bothering me as well. The wonders of anime adaptations boosting popularity of characters.

    • skylion says:

The cliffhanger still feels forced to me. If it’s as you suggest then they went for cheap composition…

Some of your information on Freya may be a bit spoilery, so yeah…

That Syr and Freya are the same person is a stray thought I had, and one that I saw a few speculate on reddit. I put it in the end as bait..

Well, the production committee members should have a nice wave of cash to ride in on, if they play it right…

      • Krono says:

That information is not really spoilery since making people fall into a daze from seduction is the power that was shown in the manga she used to get past the guards to the monsters. I also have to agree that Freya’s personality does not really match with what Syr does. My belief in that is mostly from the fact that Freya is way too impatient for Bell to act as Syr.

I was really annoyed that Hestia did not give him the knife, but after reading this section of the manga afterwards I accepted it since she wanted them to run and not fight. Unfortunately, he did not really give her the chance to change her mind and give him the knife before he took off in the manga. It’s basically that she did not want him to fight the Silverback if they could run away, so she did not think to give him the knife

        • Krono says:

lol meant *her to act as Syr* not Bell.

        • skylion says:

I’ve more or less stopped reading the manga (around chapter six or seven?) I got enough into it to know I would like the show, and now I want to remain spoiler free. As always, I cover how the show tells the story…
