It’s nice to see this show explore more of its sentai parody aspect. After all, if you strip away the standard harem stuff, what you’re left with is just a sentai parody that uses various otaku-related fetishes as a core theme. And that had been growing a bit stale, with the continued return of faceless mooks and overdramatic-yet-easily-dispatched bosses. But the fight with Dark Grasper this episode bucked the trend with fresh new ways of parodying sentai shows, such as her electrified binding move, or her sending the heroines into dream sequences, or that surprise weapon-gattai move by the 3 heroines at the end. Even Mega Neptune’s appearance seemed designed to invoke the sentai tradition of a monster being replaced by a giant version of itself after being defeated by the heroes’ super gattai move.
And the show managed to mix in its own brand of absurdity too, from Dark Grasper’s threat of putting glasses on Tail Red that matched her own prescription to Thouars’s “300% serious” attempted symmetrical docking. The dream sequence felt a little wasted due to how short it was, but at least we got to see Erina’s most base desires (seems both her and Aika were dreaming about continuations of their actions in Souji’s dream, which is curious – does this indicate that he knows them that well?). Something like that deserves at least half an episode of exploring before the characters break out. Or an uncensored BD-only full-length OVA episode.
I see at least two girls in Souji’s harem with just one sideways ponytail rather than twin tails.
I must admit I found Dark Grasper’s newfound crush on Tail Red pretty confusing. I can kinda follow that she was moved by Tail Red’s fiery passion, but even that feels like a stretch, especially for someone who was so singularly driven to be with Thouars until just moments prior. I’m not inherently against her falling for Tail Red, but this just seems like lazy writing. There are better ways to get someone to join the protagonist’s harem; Erina was one such example. Plus, I liked Dark Grasper just fine as Thouars’s crazy stalker. I think that makes for a much better villain than someone with a crush on the protagonist. With her surviving this episode and with just a few episodes left, I’m thinking she will return as the final boss, so I hope this development won’t be to the detriment of her quality as a villain in the big finish.
Now that I think about it, it’s a bit odd that the absolute territory hasn’t been featured as a fetish yet. Irisu has some A, possibly S class frilly ones. (Click for stitches)

I’m pretty sure Irisu and Souji both have potential sexual harassment cases against each other. Former for forcible kissing, latter for not revealing his gender before enticing said kissing.

Madan no Ou to Vanadis – 10
If hentai has taught me anything, it’s that this can only end well.
Wow. And here I was thinking the battle scenes couldn’t get any worse after last week. The crowds of mechanically moving CG soldiers and mechanically moving CG horses have always been bad, but this week took it to the next level with its crowds of mechanically flailing CG soldiers in the background during scenes with Ludmila and Tigre. They didn’t even have any opposing soldiers to make it at least have the semblance of a fight. They were literally just looping flailing animations while they had 1 or 2 good guys completely surrounded, at their mercy. This kind of shorthand can work for extremely quick pans with lots of blur/smearing, but for static shots using clear CG? It’s a fucking disaster.
Not to mention the direction was sloppy beyond just that CG. It was never quite clear when the characters were safe to talk and when they were in active combat. There was one scene in which Tigre had a long conversation with one of the generals who had brought reinforcements, followed by Ludmila entering the frame behind him by blocking an enemy sword. This could have been written off as a place that was safe suddenly becoming unsafe with Ludmila providing defense for the unsuspecting Tigre, but Tigre didn’t respond, not even with a flinch. He calmly turned around in response not to the attack but to respond to Ludmila speaking to him. This makes no sense whatsoever. A show like this that has a war, its battles, and their combatants as major plot points and characters simply can’t get away with its battle scenes being as bad as they have been.
Oh, the faces this girl makes.
On the other hand, the post-battle festivities were pleasant. Again, Ludmila teasing Tigre was just a lot of fun to watch, especially once Eleonora entered the scene. Too bad she didn’t take the opportunity the night before to really get one up on her rival, because Eleonora seems to have gotten Tigre right back on track to her route with their starlight conversation. It’s probably the biggest step yet towards getting them to be a couple by the end of the show, which I’ve been rooting for a few episodes now. Even if I wish they’d gotten a little farther than just hand holding, I guess for someone like Tigre, that’s still something notable.

Twintails: Or should we now call it “Ore, QUALITY ni Narimasu.” Because the whole episode was just full of QUALITY. How did that even get pass the animation supervisors, if they even had any for this episode? Production IMS is a relatively new studio but it doesn’t excuse all this. Or maybe I should blame it to the timeslot that this is airing. Mahou Sensou, Blade and Soul, Rail Wars and now this. All suffered from QUALITY.
Aside from that, it was pretty fun. I definitely loved the final attack where Dark Grasper said that they fired too fast, as if she was expecting a head on clash like most final attacks do. DG will definitely be surprised when she finds out that Red is a guy. Maybe her feelings will change when she learns of it.

Oh god, yes the animation was just as bad as a few eps ago in the one with Erina’s coming out scene. Lots of off model faces and at least one instance that looked like Tail Blue didn’t quite have her full uniform on. It’s hard to believe professionals are happy putting stuff like this out. I mean, at least make them look somewhat passable when they’re static and not requiring many frames.

Vanadis: Yeah, no excuses. The whole fight was portrayed pretty badly here. As always, it was more clearer in the source material. And obviously, Mira wasn’t fighting anyone there when reinforcements arrived. They’re not even trying anymore.
While Tigre did fell asleep with Mira, I’m disappointed that he didn’t fell on her chest and cuddled him like in the illustration. The morning part was done differently as well. Tigre was still half asleep when he got to grope Mira. Also, Ellen didn’t actually barge in there. She arrived much later in the day and on a different place.
And as I feared, they removed a fight which is a very, very important plot point to the series. Given that they removed all the foreshadowing for it from the earlier episodes, I already expected it. Spoiler tag for the removed fight:Show ▼

Wow, another very disappointing job of adapting, after what they did with Tigre’s Limlisha breast sucking scene. I guess they’re really blowing it in terms of putting the core essence of the original work on screen.

I actually have to say that I like the way they played it with Tigre and Mira more than I think I’d have liked what you describe. The show feels like it’s much more OTP with Elen and Tigre than the impression I’m getting of the books.

Twintails: I don’t know if Aika and Erina were having the same fantasy that Souji was, but it was certainly similar. But what I really loved was that both, especially Aika, had the reaction “Oh come on, I was so close!” Like they knew that it wasn’t reality but it was good enough.
It’s so sad that everyone has close to the same fantasy, but they can’t get them together to actualize them. Oh Souji, why are you so virtuous?

Ore, Twintails ni Narimasu – 09: Poor Thouars. She got NTRed by Dark Grasper whether she wanted to or not. Grasper’s doing well for a villain in this series and her twisted motivations are icing on the cake.

Madan no Ou to Vanadis – 10: About time Ludmila started openly making advances on Tigre. It only intensifies her rivalry with Eleonora and that’s always fun to watch. To be honest, I really can’t decide who’d make the better pairing with him.
The war parts were somewhat sloppy in some takes. However, it didn’t do anything to affect the awe in watching countless people from different factions come in just to help Tigre out. The guy sure knows how to win people over. Plus, is it me or did the gore in the battles suddenly intensify?
