Kamigami no Asobi – 12 [END]

Of course. The apocalypse was brought about by Missingno, just as the Mayans predicted.

Well, fanservice happened, which is more than I can say about the entire run of Kin’iro no Corda (unless you find ANGST really attractive).

Well, the last episode was indeed focused on Kamiya Hiroshi Balder basically causing the apocalypse (Ragnarok, I guess?). Maybe there was something better he could have done to stop himself from getting to that point in the first place (as in, finding a death that’s quikcer than drowning, since water probably can’t hurt him in the first place), but obviously the power of love and friendship would save Balder in the end, so it’s probably a good thing that he didn’t really off himself efficiently.

So yep, the first episode of the anime was actually a preview of the last episode. More importantly though, they brought back the fabulous transformations! …I don’t really have much else to add to that, actually. There was a lot of fighting and a lot of “yeah, don’t worry Balder, we’ll save you. Somehow”. Nothing really overly emotional happened. Of course Yui was upset over all of this, and Loki was the one trying the hardest (and was most likely to become a martyr), but really anyone could have seen these reactions coming if they had been paying even the slightest bit of attention in previous episodes. I guess the end point here is that Zeus’s plan for forcing everyone to become friends/understanding the human heart and whatnot was successful. Everyone seriously wanted to save each other. There weren’t any major plot twists or anything, but that was okay.

Yui seemed like she might have been in danger of being forgotten in all of the other fabulousness excitement going on, but the plot managed to figure out a way to incorporate her again. Loki dealt the final blow, but at least Yui had the kind of important task of delivering the magical water sword of friendship feelings (or whatever you want to call it) to him in the first place. Plus, it makes sense that she didn’t play a huge role, since she’s just a regular human. Hades and the others were out there dealing with ancient Nordic death beams and whatnot. There’s really not much Yui could have done in the situation.

The ending was actually pretty well done. Balder returning to normal was expected, but sending Yui away right after things were settled was interesting. Everyone had already technically “graduated” by then of course, but the ending of their school life came out of nowhere. The series could have probably left it as Yui just getting on with her life/never mentioning the gods again and it would have been fine. However, having everyone return at the end was good too. Sure it was a “lol just kidding, Yui isn’t foreveralone” ending and pretty cliche, but the fact that the final goodbye between the characters was so rushed made it okay. If they hadn’t had the sense of urgency beforehand and had a normal farewell, things would have felt different if they all suddenly came back.

I haven’t heard of the game having a fandisk or sequel in the works, so I don’t know about a second season of the anime ever existing. …Though, this game is made by Broccoli, who seem to intend on milking the UtaPri franchise until they die (there are like, 9 games or something for that series now, including the remake), so maybe if KamiAso is popular enough, there might be more in the future.

KamiAso00012

Until then though, the BL fanfiction pretty much wrote itself in this last episode.

Well, I don’t know about anyone else, but I thought that was a pretty good ending, all things considered. Having everyone back at the end felt right, where I would normally be rolling my eyes since they spent so long on that dramatic goodbye with everyone. This series was alright. This was definitely the better of the two shoujo series that aired during the spring. Actually, it’s probably the best otoge turned anime that’s aired in a while. The beginning started off strong, and I lost some interest once the angst with Balder and Loki started up, but they recovered nicely before the ending episode here. The harem antics were funny, it was fine that no one ended up with Yui, and Yui herself was great for not being shoved into a corner and forgotten (…for the most part). She had many of the stereotypical heroine traits, but the important thing was that instead of just needing to be rescued all the time, she accomplished a lot in bringing everyone together.

From what I hear, the anime changed a LOT from the game to improve Yui’s character and make the plot actually make sense, so this might even be better than most of the game was. (This wasn’t even the anime to end all anime, so maybe that goes to show how uh, “not good” the game was.) …Or at least that’s what I’ve heard. I’ll form my own conclusions when I finally feel like playing this, but I’m not exactly fond of the writer they had for the game to begin with, so that could take a while. From what I’ve experienced, basically they throw in a lot of needlessly long scenes, melodramatics, ANGST, HOMO ANGST and seem to ignore the romance/heroine (you know, the “otome” parts of an otome game AHAHAHA). So yeah, maybe in a year or two, unless I’m in the mood to play something frustrating (…it’s happened before).

Ugh, that finale was so saccharine and full of cliches it hurts. It’s like all the cliches this type of show is normally known for and they were doing a valiant job of not including, just all forced themselves into this last episode in one large flood.

Oh well, it was nice to finally see everyone in their god forms, but their ending sacrifice was heartfelt and kind of made up for all the cliches that were forced into this last episode. Them showing up at the very end was forced, but not unexpected. After all, they are gods, they’re all immortal for the most part and could just go back to their original pantheons after the collapse of the garden’s alternate reality. Zeus can no longer keep them there. And of course they can visit Yui, every single one of these gods have interacted with the human world on several occasions, its not surprising that they would return to see her.

However, I would have been more amazed and proud of them if they had left everything on a bittersweet note. But c’est la vie

Broccoli’s already announced a new one, Kamigami no Asobi Infinite for the PSP. The game’s still in development, so no idea if this is an actual sequel or expansion fandisk.

Wow, the PSP is still alive and kicking in Japan.

        Another reason to buy PSP

        FOR THE PORN VISUAL NOVEL

      • Karakuri says:

In the otoge world, anyways. Otomate is moving on to the Vita and Rejet seems to favour the PC (+ their endless stream of drama CDs). Quinrose and Broccoli still seem to be developing for PSP though.

    • Karakuri says:

Ah, well there you go. I’m sure Broccoli will continue milking this series too, then. I just hope for the love of *insert deity of your choice here (it’s only appropriate)* that they hire a different writer.

I enjoyed the series a lot, and thought it was fine that Yui really didn’t have much to do. That would have been stupid, that here are all the gods you can find, and the human has to be the person who saves them all. Riiiiiight.

Yui’s glum mood after being instantly sent back was interesting, and that they let it go on for so long afterward (not really much show time, but it seemed like a few months in Yui time). And even though both shows didn’t have any outright romance, this one felt much less sketchy than Blue Sky, it was played much straighter and the possible romantic beginnings between Apollon and Yui, and even Balder and Yui, were nicely developed, instead of just “I just met you but I totally love you!”

    • Namika says:

About human saving all the gods, I wouldn’t say it’s a stupid idea. It’s quite poetic, actually.

      • Highway says:

There are some series that pull it off fairly well, like KamiNomi. In this series, given Yui’s skill set, and the way the show was going, it would have been a laughable plot development.

Yui saved the gods in a different way, allowing them to save Balder in this particular fashion. 🙂

        • Namika says:

Well, the execution of that brilliant idea was lame. You’re right 😀

    • Karakuri says:

I don’t know if Balder and Yui were THAT well developed. I mean, his episode he was in creepy rapist mode, things were magically solved, and then remained magically solved. I like how she delivered friendship to him and all, but on the romantic front in the actual episodes, I don’t know if much really ever developed.

      • Highway says:

Well, I mean more that there was actually quite a bit of time that Yui and Balder spent interacting *before* he went into creepy controlling mode. It wasn’t, as the Doors sang, “Hello, I love you. Won’t you tell me your name?” that we seem to get too often. It wasn’t that their romance went anywhere, just that there was actually some foundation to it, rather than just because he’s a guy and she’s the girl in an otome story.

  4. Namika says:

So, I liked this show more than I expected. It wasn’t bad, and I actually enjoyed some of the character interactions. The fancervice was not overpowering and painful(if there was any) and I completely agree with you on Yui. Not ideal, but compared to other otoge adaptations I’ve seen she’s practically a crossover between Mello, Kagami and Orihime. That comparison probably doesn’t make sense though.
The ending was nice. When I thought that they got separated or the boys just simply died I was quite surprised, but the ending titles were so long that you just knew that it wasn’t it. Though I’ll admit I got slightly worried 😀

    • Irenesharda says:

Yui, is a breath of fresh air in comparison to those girls of the last three seasons or so. The girl in that vampire one infuriated me, and Heroine was…well, we all we all know what Heroine was. 🙁

    • Karakuri says:

The character interactions were generally pretty funny. I don’t know if there were many truly heartwarming moments, but it wasn’t painfully cliche all the time. …Yeah, the only one I understand from that comparison is Orihime ahaha…

  5. Kyokai says:

This was very entertaining and nothing like some of the shitty old reverse harem shows. I actually liked the heroine as she had a personality.

Just sad that the Tomokazu Seki doll didn’t have much screen time, I always liked whenever he called her Kutanagi. xD

    • Karakuri says:

I’m surprised that they had Tomokazu in this at all, since Melissa was just a mascot character. I had no idea he even existed until the anime, so I wonder what exactly he even does in the game. xD

  6. anaaga says:

Definitely better than many otome-game-adaptation anime, and the anime plot seems to be better than the visual novel plot (I read a thorough review of it, and it seems like a mess. Especially that Thoth route lol). I honestly don’t mind if there is a second season, but what will it focus on?… Thoth’s route? LOL

And Yui is definitely the best otome anime heroine so far, along with UtaPri’s and Hiiro no Kakera’s. There needs to be more otome anime main character like Yui

    • Karakuri says:

Uh, from how the UtaPri games went, the sequel game completely reset the relationships and had the characters graduated from school, but be enrolled in a different type of idol lessons, so I assume that the next KamiAso game will still be in Zeus’ school. Maybe they’ll be there for “supplementary classes” or some BS like that. xD

Yui needs to become the norm for otoge heroines. Seriously. Either that or Quinrose needs to get something animated (other than that confusing Heart no Kuni OVA), because their heroines are generally tsun to the extreme and often hilariously violent.

  7. zztop says:

More importantly though, they brought back the fabulous transformations!

They left out Thoth and Anubis’s god forms though.
    Here’s what they looked like.
    Thoth:http://download.minitokyo.net/Thoth.Caduceus.649257.jpg
    Anubis:http://24.media.tumblr.com/4c6218f30ddf3109262eadd453bc998d/tumblr_n3ytj0k6fm1qis4d8o7_500.png

Dionysus’s god form was never even used in the game, so at least the anime allowed it to make an appearance here.
