Well, it looks like we’ve come to the close of No Dragon No Life, and what a tentacle filled journey it has been, right Fosh?

Amen Skylion! This adventure filled with dragons, magic and yes even tentacles appearing in EVERY damn episode we have finally reached the end of this quest, but this is one of those series that I can easily see coming out with several seasons afterwards! Now will I watch them? Probably; however my addition to this post will be a bit different than the normal because I wanted to do a video instead so I hope you enjoy this strange post for the final review.

Goodbye LOLi Dragons!!
Ash-“Sorry Saber, but I need to borrow your overpowered sword.”
I’m a long time fan of the RPG style fantasy genre; even since my early teenage years when I was playing D&D. So I’m a soft touch when it comes to following this sort of show. It probably explains why I stuck with it for as long as I did. So, with that in mind, I don’t think C-Station did a good enough a job stamping it’s own ground in a very large fantasy genre. From Eco’s way-to tsundere/mascot characterization, the general blandness of plot (with Lucca’s arc the rare exception), some oddball, and unexplored harem antics, and the derpy politics. And the tentacles. Holy Mother of all Things that Live and Breathe! The Tentacles! Even Navi had to lampshade them. Oh, and do you think she is the grown version of Eco, or is she just a look a like and the Navigator of the Dragon Workshop?
But with that out of the way, let’s get down to a proper review of the episode, and a proper send off for the show itself. I’ll even take it back a bit and say I found it neat that the over-arching plot was revealed to be a thousand or so year old scheme for revenge. That revenge was carried out by the bloodline carried by Prince Julius’ par, Mordred, the heir of the dark kingdom of Nehalennia. I did discuss that this line was part of an much more ancient dragon, Imbloc. I like how they showed the despised Julius as the hero, trying to save the world from a line of dragons that only wanted to eat people and exploit them. But….I take back points for him not being able to explain himself. I mean, this was from historic record, surely his contemporaries could have tested his claim.
But it was all for the big show, right. Eco is having a very bad evening. Experimented on until she forced evolved into a monster, and then having Modred’s spirit leave Julius and posesses her. It’s hard being a LOLi dragon. But at least Navi had her back. And Ash’s back for that matter. Cause when it’s time to step up and be a hero, I admit they did it with some style. Even if I had to hear Ash say more than a few times, “I can ride her”. Sigh. Speaking of riding it was time for Veronica to get in on some of the Dragonar plot. Geez, more tentacles. Oh, and the reveal that she is a secret sis-con, but we kinda got clued into that earlier in the show. But back to the big battle. Sigh, everyone had to show up? I would have just stuck with Lucca for crying and Rebecca for crying out loud! But the day was well and truly saved, and Ash got a naked LOLi hug. And maybe even a kiss? Did Eco win the Ash Bowl? I would like to think she did, she did step up the the plate with style. What did you think of EXCALIBUR! Fosh?

End thoughts
Overall, I felt the series had a ton of potential, as much as the genre can promise, but it always comes down to details. Of course, I could give the standard excuse of, needs more cour, but that can’t be the answer to everything, and I fear we might have gotten more of the same. The manga had a touch more development in some of the politics, but I don’t think it would have added much in the long run. Overall I would call the series uneven, It had some great parts, in Eco’s cuteness and playful personality, and the Royal Family’s overall story, and of course Lucca. but it had equal parts bad. And tentacles.
I fully agree with Skylion on this! Seikoku no Dragonar had a ton of potential to be something unique, but in the end it was a basic fantasy story which felt a bit like Machine-Doll or The familiar of Zero especially with Eco who was my favorite girl next to Lucca, Jessica and Rebbeca! That said I am thankful that Eco was not a super hardcore Tsundere character even though I can’t ignore the fact that she called Ash her dog; however there were lots of other characters around to keep things entertaining in Dragonar so that at least made me return week after week even though I did find myself getting extremely bored halfway through because of some boring moments, but in the end it left me pleased, so will we see more of this in the future? I will say maybe? Probably? Just kidding I bet season two is already being worked on as you read this review.

I actually ended up enjoying Dragonar a bit more than I started out (and no, not just because of Lautreamont boobs). I liked that they backed Eco off a bit, and I liked the way they finished up with her, saying that she wasn’t going to accept a standard Knight / Pal relationship. And maybe that is what her destiny is, why she’s not dragon-shaped.
I didn’t like what they did to Veronica in the last episode. I know that other people really disliked her, but I never had much of a problem with her, so the way the writers treated her in this last episode just seemed cheap and overly cruel, both with the sisconning and with the tentacle rape. Neither one was called for, imo, and both were too far over the top to be funny. In general in this show, the tentacle stuff was too over-the-top to be anything but uncomfortable. It was too much of a mood shift to be fun and sexy.
Overall, I think they did a good job in not making the show be too much of a “we all love Ash Blake!” harem adventure. It was there as a secondary storyline, but it wasn’t anything that took over. Ash is quite the gigolo, tho, isn’t he? Was it hours, or did it make it to a day, between when he was almost smooching Sylvia and then smooching Eco? And with Eco’s declaration, what’s he going to do about Sylvia? Would she just accept a loss? I doubt it (especially if there are more LN’s). I thought they used Jessica well, not just as comic foil but as an effective ally.
All in all, I enjoyed the show. Maybe I’d have liked a bit more grown up look in the character designs for the kind of show it was (while on Gaworare I’ve been noting that I don’t mind the chibi look) but overall I think it was a successful enough series.

That aside, the Veronica tentacle rape scene wasn’t in the light novel. I haven’t read the manga, but I rather doubt it was there either. It strikes me as being an anime-original addition. Rather suprising, because the author does love his tentacle scenes, but all that was supposed to happen there was Veronica being overwhelmed by the darkness and passing out, and then being woken up by Julius.
The siscon stuff, however, is all canon, aside from the photo.

It was supposed to just be Lucca. In the LN, the entire point was that she was the only rider skilled enough to have hung on to Gawain when the dragons started disobeying their riders once Eco appeared in her dragon form.
Speaking of which, Eco’s dragon form here was quite pathetic compared to her from in the LN, and I’m not sure why. You know how the corrupt noble was whining about her landing on his airship and damaging it? In the LN he was whining about her smashing it flat with one foot. Veronica praised her, because she was the first thing in a long time that was able to make Veronica feel fear. I have no idea why they made her so much smaller and less intimidating than she was supposed to be.

Veronica’s image crashed and burned for the finale. That stern and intimidating presence reduced to nothing in no time and she got revealed as a sis-con in five easy steps. Now a Kuroko Shirai impression remains and I’m wondering what was going through her head when she slashed Sylvia’s clothes in front of the crowd after her arrival to Ansullivan a few episodes back.
In general, Seikoku no Dragonar turned out to be an alright series to look at. I can’t say it’s one I anticipate every week because that’s not the case. It does do well to kill some time with an interesting enough story and some good characters. At first, I wasn’t much of a fan of Eco because of her insensitive high horse attitude which often put me off but once she toned it down, my toleration started to grow. Among those aspects, the fanservice was top notch with hardly anything hidden and I dare say it’s eligible enough to give High School DxD a run for its money.
I am, however, annoyed Ash and Sylvia didn’t get enough alone time to develop. A relationship was beginning yet didn’t get a proper jump start. Just as frustrating, the part about them figuring out they’ve met each other in early childhood keeps getting nerfed at every turn. Unless there’s another season where the revelation will take place, that’s going to bug me whenever I think of this series.

If they had animated the very next volume of the light novels it would have dealt with your complaints about Silvia. They only animated 4 volumes, and there are a total of 15 volumes released, so there’s a lot of story left untold here. This is by no means a conclusion.
