First Impression – D-Frag!

Nope. I still haven’t learned not to blog comedy shows. …Or actually, I’m only really here to cover first impressions since everyone else |
The setting seems typical enough. A guy joins a club that he doesn’t really want to join because the members push him into it to keep the club from being disbanded. …Or at least, the plot here would be typical if the club members weren’t so violent. Ah, the irony of having the delinquent (…if he really is a delinquent; we haven’t seen him do much) be at the mercy of a HanaKana character. Er, kind of. Kenji seems to have a somewhat high immunity to the fire element moe. There was still the feel-good part where he joined because the members wholeheartedly rescued him from a rather stupid death (or at least a rather stupid injury), so it’s not like he was totally forced into it. Plus, it doesn’t look like he’ll be running away anymore either.
The female characters all seem pretty violent (and a bit weird). Obviously, the ones featured predominantly in the episode were Chitose and Roka, but Minami and Sakura had no problems taking out Kenji’s friends. It’s interesting how Chitose is the student council president, considering how shady the game creation club seems to be. Of course, with the vice president being a masochist with questionable friends, maybe this school is just weird overall.
How did the comedy portion fare? Well, the “type” joke went on the entire episode, but it never really exhausted itself. Maybe it will if they keep it up like they have, but as far as the first episode went, it was pretty amusing. HanaKana’s character switch from the “fire” type to “darkness” was constantly amusing. Yes, this looks like the kind of show that takes absurd characters and runs with them. The entire club looks like a piece of work, but even Kenji’s friends fit in with this too. Kenji is the most normal out of all of them (even among his friends), but obviously, he’s supposed to be since he’s the straight man for the show. His tsukkomi remarks seem funny more often than not, so he’s doing a good job at his role. This anime doesn’t require any sort of deep thinking, and it’s rather amusing without it. …Plus you’d probably just get a headache trying to rationalize anything in here.
There wasn’t anything special about the animation or OST that I noticed in this episode, but there was nothing horrible either. The acting wasn’t bad at all (Fukuyama was great). I wasn’t too fond of the ED -which seems like it will be the show’s OP, though I could be wrong-, but that might just be me.
Judging from what I’ve seen around the net, most people can agree that this anime is entertaining. I actually read the first chapter or so of the manga about a year or so ago and dropped it, since it just didn’t interest me. …And then the anime came around, and it’s funnier somehow. Maybe it’s the voice acting adding to the comedic timing or something, but were I didn’t get much out of the manga, I enjoyed the anime. …Or maybe my taste in comedy has drastically changed since in a short period of time. Oh well, long story short, D-Frag! ‘s opening episode went well and while there’s not a whole lot to talk about yet, it looks like it will be a pretty interesting anime.

My thoughts exactly! Most anime adaptations actually make the gags funnier (due to having movement and visual reference) but whether it was the pacing or what not, the jokes felt unnatural and it weren’t as enjoyable as in the manga.

I was actually surprised at how much I laughed at this show. For me, the jokes worked, even if they were silly and very character type driven. It was pretty darn random, but didn’t feel like it was just outright wacky. I like the seitokaichou also, that’s an attitude you don’t usually see in that character.

This was sooooooooooo freaking hilarious! I love the game creation club members and their odd “elemental” powers, but Roka stole the show! She was great and of course who could resist dat Kana Hanazawa? I know I can not and Jun Fukuyama as the vice president! LOL that dude is such an M for the student council president~
I look forward to more of this and hell ya that ED <3

This first episode was insane but fun. Definitely one of the shows needing to turn your brain off to enjoy and I didn’t see the part about one of the club members being a teacher coming at all. Besides, anything that has Jun Fukuyama playing a character that requires him to use his crazy voice is worth checking out. My favorite quote from his character is “You guys are just the tip of the iceberg, you hicks fresh from the country!”.
I’m inclined to watch more of this.

Hahaha!! Nice ambition there, Kara and I can sympathize with that. I’m doing everything in my power to increase my comment count because I want to reach 6000 before my birthday on February 1st 2014.
I realized I’ve been sluggish since reaching 5000. Normally I’d reach another 1000 about every 3 months or just under that (Yes, observations were made) and I reached 5000 on one of Overcooled’s early Phi Brain S3 posts and that was at the start of Fall 2013.
Great, now everyone knows my little agenda. 😀

Hmmmm, having the main character who is a self-proclaimed delinquent and head of a “gang” play the straight man didn’t work for me. The jokes were a hit or miss for me, some were good, other ones felt forced. It feels like it has potential so I’ll give it another episode or two.
