Can a mom that looks like that expect her daughter to not be a tomboy?
This week is a change of scenery for Love Lab, but Riko is still living the lie. Will she finally get exposed to Maki this week?
Where the Boys Are
Riko meets a boy, but who is it?
Perhaps finally realizing that there aren’t going to be any boys to be girlfriends for at an all-girls school, but more just annoyed at being ditched by the rest of the group, Riko takes Maki out to the shopping district for some fun. Of course, they run into Sayo, who twists the knife into Riko a little more. Or she tries to, making fun of Riko’s supposed prowess with boys, challenging her to come up with one of these guys she turned down when, lo and behold, one of them actually does come right up to them. Reputation Saved! For now, even if she doesn’t want it to. But who is it?
The problem is, Riko doesn’t remember. Even though the guy apparently had a pretty big crush on her. And when she finds out that it was her old neighbor and soccer teammate Satoshi, that makes her feel worse, but she finally salvages the chance to say something to Satoshi, who points out that Riko hasn’t changed at all. Riko’s lack of changing was really a theme this week, with her mother and brother discussing that she hasn’t changed since being accepted into Fuji Girl’s Academy, not in the least ladylike, and not very successful with guys. And Riko herself realizes this, seeing that guys don’t see her as a girl, getting her friendzoned by default.

Riko finally gets a chance to apologize to Satoshi (and look girly)
Riko finally figures out who Satoshi is, and Maki tags along with her to find out, setting Maki up for her first encounter with a boy. And since he’s not anything like Dakki, it’s definitely a new experience for Maki, as she wasn’t exactly set up for success by Riko. She and “Yan” get off on the wrong foot right away since she doesn’t have his actual name. She even ends up being accused of mocking him (thinking he was an English speaker since he didn’t respond), and thinking she could get away with it because she’s kinda cute, and called an idiot. Basically, all the things that earnest, hardworking, not-really-thinking-of-herself-as-cute Maki never is. But she actually interacted with a boy, so it’s a step in the right direction!

But back on the school front, trouble’s brewing. And the Newspaper Society has gotten wind of the Student Council’s activities, and is working on collecting information on them, including some ‘social engineering’ to get Maki and Riko to spill the info. It’s definitely a scandal, and it might let them get back at their “mortal enemy” Sayo. It’ll be interesting to find out why Sayo is such a bad guy to them, although it will probably turn out to be something dumb like “She denied an increase in funding.”
Easy spying
Hey, some actual boys in the show! And Riko actually dressed up like a girl. But their encounters with them haven’t gone so well to this point, although it might be that any encounter is worthwhile for Maki. But let’s see how much they get in trouble from the Newspaper Society, or if Maki is able to work something out with them to keep everyone out of trouble.

Holy Crap. Satoshi and Sayo for the MF Win!
If I was Riko, I would just drop all pretenses and go for that boy. He is HOT with a capital H O and T. Yes, he is easily embarrassed, but…..but….that was so darned CUTE.
And props for the Newspaper Society…Sayo is going to be an amazing character come next episode.

Their relationship definitely seems to be one that could blossom into love. Especially because Satoshi is someone who knows all about Riko, and likes the way she is.

And so the lies out of desperation continue and Sayo pouring salt into the wounds. Riko’s mom looks very tomboyish herself. Doesn’t she feel any shame saying Riko should be more feminine?
I guess the reason Riko doesn’t remember turning down Satoshi is because it was a premature crush and she didn’t take it seriously. That soccer photo of him was almost misleading. The first glance made him look like a boy.
As if things weren’t bad enough, the girls have gone out of the frying pan and into the fire. If what they were coerced into saying gets out, they’ll be huge riot and that might force Riko to admit that she’s a fraud. I would say Sayo does what she does because she doesn’t like it when people are being dishonest, even with themselves and so she tortures them until they breakdown and confess.

Hey, mom’s already GOT a husband, she doesn’t need to be feminine for anyone else. But really, Riko will find a guy who likes her for her, because as guys get older, tastes change, and a girl you didn’t consider before gets more on your mind.
I think Sayo’s motivations aren’t nearly that ‘pure’. I think it’s more that she doesn’t like other people, and takes perverse pleasure in mildly torturing other people. It’s just that with Riko, she’s found a perfect target for it, because Riko is too prideful to appear wrong.

Oh, I also doubt that Satoshi ever actually confessed to her. It was almost certainly one of those “If I hang around her and hint obliquely at things, she’ll pick up how I feel.”

So far, I think there are only mild yuri undertones because of the girls always fawning over Riko when she’s in sight. Other than that, the show’s pretty normal.
