Nomination Quotes:

Tofu – Chuunibyou to me felt like the most “WOW” in terms of animation. KyoAni doing extreme fighting scenes!?!? HOLY SHIT, they need to do more of this! It’s so beautiful! But I’m sure it’s just me being bias since I can’t remember half of the shows that aired this year. T___T
Jrow – Fate/Zero was stunning. Episodes like the beginning of the Spring run were just incredible.
lvlln – My picks Hyouka and Nisemonogatari have already been mentioned plenty, but I notice that neither Black Rock Shooter nor Girls und Panzer has been, at least in this category. Perhaps some would consider CG to be separate from animation, but without a separate category, it should fall under the same umbrella. Black Rock Shooter pushed human CG animation and action forward quite a bit when it came out at the beginning of the year, and Girls und Panzer did the same with machines, to an even greater extent. Those works deserve recognition.
Namika – This just HAS to go to K. Because regardless of almost a shapeless plot/character development/whatever, you can not deny that the art and animation was beautiful.
Dana Tsuritama. No it might not beat the technical achievements of other series, but it’s melding of rotoscoping and animation was seamless, the painted backgrounds were beautiful, artistic and original and the characters were adorable and highly expressive.

Nomination Quotes:

Jrow – Mouretsu Pirates, in spite of a title that sounds fanservicey, avoided being as much and was a cute girls doing cute things series that I really liked. Marika was great, and also surprise yuri.
Kara I think the surprise of the year for me was Phi Brain S2. I was expecting nothing and then it made puzzles cool and people that could do them god.
KyokaiFor me, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun turned out to be quite a surprise. I was expecting a normal romance but the comedy element along with two complete anti-social coming together and having an almost volatile relationship was pretty entertaining and adorable.
lvlln – The way K turned out caught me by surprise. It wasn’t spectacular, but the way the sometimes-whimsical-sometimes-serious story played out was very good, and I appreciated how much weight the show put into all the little things. Not to mention the spectacular-at-times animation. I also nominate Hyouka for the surprise of KyoAni finally getting all its ducks in a row in a TV series for the 1st time in the 6 years since Haruhi. And on that note, Tari Tari was PA Works’s first good show from what I’ve seen, and it was phenomenal.

Nomination Quotes:

Kiiro – Jormungand could have won it any other time, but Sakamichi no Apollon takes it, as i did one thing that manga usually cannot do: delivering the musical aspect.
Highway Nazo no Kanojo X, a manga with a really weird hook that turns a lot of people off and has a reputation for a glacial pace of progress was turned into a visually stunning anime that was well paced and had nearly flawless continuity, even though stories and plot points were moved, shifted, and rearranged in whole and in parts. And even though there wasn’t a large amount of progress within the main character’s physical relationship, there was always the feeling of moving forward, and if ‘glacial’ can describe the pace, it can also describe the definite feeling of inexorable progress that was given, always forward, never backward.
Jrow – Persona 4, as I’ve mentioned previously, was well adapted considering the countless hours of content and only 25 episodes to work with. Jormungand and Mysterious Girlfriend X were quite faithful and could also be in the mix.
lvlln – Well, this one has a couple obvious picks. Future Diary was an unforgettable spectacle, an awesome display of insanity that the manga had become famous for. The other one is clearly Joshiraku, the adaptation of Koji Kumeta’s 4-koma series about female comediennes. What do you know, comediennes know how to make people laugh, whodathunkit? A treat for every Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei fan.

Nomination Quotes:

Tofu – I’m probably cheating here since there’s no downloads for it but Movie of the Year for me was Wolf Children. It tells a tale of 2 siblings who have wolf blood in them, allowing them to transform into wolves when they wish and basically it’s a big life story about what path do they want to pursue – whether to live as a human or live as a wolf. It’s a beautiful tale filled with great characters that really bloom by the end of the movie. I was able to watch it on the full screen in the city (special screening). It was definitely a movie I would highly recommend to anyone. Unfortunately since I’m probably the only one who watched it, I can’t go into too much detail and I know this is a wasted vote but even so, it deserved a mention. ^^
Jrow – As much as I’d like to preemptively award either One Piece, Madoka Magica or Evangelion, I’d say the best that I remember releasing this year on video was Hotarubi no Mori E. It’s like a 2-episode arc of Natsume Yuujinchou with different characters, but the same feels…
Foshizzel – Recently I have become quite addicted to the world of Precure and I just had to nominate  Precure All Stars New Stage: Mirai no Tomodachi! because it brings a lot of the past Precure girls together as they team up with the cast of Smile Precure~

Nomination Quotes:

lvlln – Seitokai Yakuindomo never fails to make me laugh. The Girls und Panzer OVA was quite funny as well, though it was rather short and featured no tank action.
Jrow – The Nichibros bonus eps. were pretty funny.
Foshizzel – Nichibros always brightened my day! I am with Jrow, they were so damn funny.
Kyokai – Oh how long have I waited for this to end. I am talking about the amazing, fantabulous and gritty Hellsing Ultimate OVA series, which took six years to finish airing (2006 to 2012). It has been a journey and every episode is a work of art with a unique art style, great story and lots of blood and eeps for supernatural lovers. Alucard is the real thing in case of vampires rather than those who actually glitter in sunlight. With the final 10th episode release, I’ll definitely take my sweet time in re-watching this brilliant series.

Nomination Quotes:

Tofu – Sakamichi no Apollon in my eyes is one of the best animes of the year. In my eyes, everyone got a well balanced amount of air time which gave each of the characters the right amount of time to develop and bloom before their little character arcs finished. I loved how they used music as a form of communication of feelings and words and something ever more special than that. It was spectacular, it was amazing! I didn’t know Jazz was this awesome! And that ending where they didn’t have to say anything… just playing a churchy Moaning? Oh god… I loved it! I loved it a lot! It was really refreshing compared to the other high school animes out there; taking on a more realistic approach to life intertwined with the music of jazz.
Kiiro Gritty competition, but I go for Fate/Zero. A fantastic premise, with a fantastic group of characters, animation by ufotable, music by Kajiura Yuki, and a script by Urobochi. With an all-star lineup, the result was exactly what was expected. Although the ending might have been predictable, due to the presence of the original show, I believe that it should win the AOTY. Overall, 2012 was a decent year, and apart from trainwrecks (Guilty Crown), it seemed to be quite good. However, too many good shows are carrying over to next year, and many of them would have warranted nominations or even winning some of these categories. Here’s to a great 2013 in anime! Have a prosperous year of the snake!
lvlln – Even just 5/6 finished, Girls und Panzer probably edges out Hyouka for my top pick here. Tsuritama is right there just inches behind them. Future Diary and Nisemonogatari I would consider distant 4th and 5th, but worthy of nomination.
Foshizzel From moe moe ctuhulu girls, crazy comedic adventures with the cast of Yuru Yuri s2 all the way to the over the top goofy fun of Aquarion EVOL! 2012 will always bring a smile to my face and cause me to laugh my ass off…

°A° Jintai is doing great! Atleast right now, I hope it wins something Jintai was great XD

    • skylion says:

Ah, I see you’ve changed your pic to Love Live’s Best Girl. Good taste. A Nico-chan is always fine.

      • Highway says:

        *sigh* poor deluded skylion…

I couldn’t put Nico better than about 5th best. Plus, her singing in the ED this week was really not doing it for me.

        • skylion says:

She is the Kurousagi of Love Live. And he singing is loadedd wither personality. You may suffer the banal chantuesery of the others, but I want quality.

          • Highway says:

So her personality is pitchy and without inflection?

Sure, I’m trying to tweak you a bit here, but really, I did find her singing sub-par in the ED song this week. It was like it wasn’t really in her range (too low) and overly consistent volume.

            • skylion says:

Her personality is free-range. LOL I guess I’m tweaked.

I like it when they do that sort of thing. Sasami did that trick, and Kotouro-san trapped us with her earth-shaking karaoke.

            • Highway says:

Yeah, but when they spend the whole episode talking about how the rest of them aren’t good enough as idols, and then wheel out her sub-par song, it’s not supposed to be a joke, it’s just not impressive.

I still go with Umi as the Best Girl. Maki’s voice is probably second best of the ones we’ve got so far. Kotori’s is worse than everyone else on the show, including random background sounds and the alpacas.

            • skylion says:

Yeah, I still think they did it on purpose. It’s a sly little kick. As for best voices, I don’t judge it based on that. I see them as amateurs of various and indeed dubious talent levels. It’s part of the show for me.

We should launch the Nico Wars when Hawt and Kara give us a slice of Episode Five for review.

            • Restia says:

Team Niko will obviously dominate, ep. 5 was all about her
              WOOP WOOP NIKO

      • Restia says:

Yes highfive for Team Niko!! Skylion we can fan spam for Niko on ep 5 post together

but I had Niko as my avatar before this one too °^°

someone was nice enough to ̶r̶i̶p̶p̶e̶d̶ ̶i̶t̶ ̶o̶u̶t̶ ̶o̶f̶ grab my comment back from Spammy
it was my avatar before, I had it on for bit °^° you didn’t notice it? still Niko just not from the anime, its from Love Live! 5th single PV I believe. also that’s cropped from an edited picture by someone lol, I was too lazy to screenshot it myself

I wonder if I’m caught up to the comments before name swap? huh, I guess Ill check

            • BlackBriar says:

You’ve reverted back to your old self? LOL. This could start an identity crisis. Can Yukarin_YY and Restia ever truly coexist? And that sounds like a dilemma for a superhero.

            • skylion says:

I can see how it is Nico now. Funny how I couldn’t before. Perhaps it is the lack of, or the obscured hair decs?

            • Restia says:

              lol I was just checking~
can’t revert back when I went through trouble of chamgimg the names on like all of my accounts scattered through the interwebs XD

Well the PV got released in September, and the anime started airing January. There’s definately differences in art since the first PV bu there still might have been minor changes since that PV too

        • Highway says:

I actually thought Niko as a character wasn’t bad. Not Umi or Maki quality, or even Nozomi (as a character, her singing voice leaves a bit to be desired).

  2. Restia says:

^ realizing using same adjective twice looks awkward
Also, ever so wonderful Hyouka seems to be doing good

    *question again
How come SAO isn’t in that last category? Not that I would bandwagon vote for it, honestly the ending of Aincrad was bullshat to me >_> but its super popular and had quite a large influence so I’m just wondering~ or are these based on something I’m not aware of?

    • Karakuri says:

I guess no one nominated it? Hyouka wasn’t on the list either and that one is popular for pretty much every other category. I’m just wondering who nominated Bread: The Animation xD

      • Highway says:

Hyouka’s nominated in lvlln’s quote in the section, so I don’t know why it’s not on there…

Not trying to pick on Kyokai, tho, honest.

      • Kyokai says:

@ Restia, Like Karakuri said, no one nominated SAO. I would like to see the polls if that train-wreck was on it. >>

@ Highway, it was part of our internal polls. Must have missed it during making the poll. Hyouka is added.

        • BlackBriar says:

Like Karakuri said, no one nominated SAO. I would like to see the polls if that train-wreck was on it.

It would probably generate less numbers in the polls than the epic train wreck that is Guilty Crown. Sword Art Online was eye candy but Guilty Crown had eye candy and awesome music to back it up. Redjuice and Supercell were their secret weapons.

          • Gecko says:

I agree. GC had the music down, especially the OST. SAO didn’t really have a great OST or anything. Kind of average in my opinion.

  3. Highway says:

I guess Girls und Panzer got disqualified from 2012?

    • BlackBriar says:

Girls und Panzer can’t be taken into account because the last two episodes haven’t aired yet. Until then, it’s off the record.

      • Highway says:

I’m just saying because the rules at the time in the post were “Have 12 or more episodes in 2013”.

Unfortunately, I think because of the 2 episodes we’re talking about being so far away from the series, it’s not going to get proper consideration in 2013 polls either, and end up as a show without a year. Never mind that it is one of the best shows of the last 24 months.

        • skylion says:

An anime with-out a year. For any show this is a dreadful outcome; for G&P, it is x10.

          Panzer Vor!

          • BlackBriar says:

This is an anime that’s forever lost in limbo with no destination. It could have worked if Girls und Panzer started this season instead of last season.

  4. Really everyone…. Hyouka for Biggest Surprise?

Did people really think that show would bomb because it’s not cute girls doing cute things? It was a good show don’t get me wrong but people were already expecting it to be good anyway since it was a KyoAni show.

Jintai was for me by far the biggest surprise of the year, I did not expect loving that show as much as I did. Going into the Summer season I remember people’s expectations including me for it in previews were kinda meh but at the end came out on top as one of people’s favorites.

    Down……

    • Restia says:

I had read vol. 1 of Hyouka like a few weeks before it aired, so I had to watch it in the Fall since it was too fresh in my mind to enjoy while airing. Hyouka, Hyouka, Hyouka. hmm. Surprising? Perhaps. Its not even a light novel adapted into an anime, just a novel. And to top it off, a genre you dont see to often these days with all the harem and shounen, Mystery. It’s set in a High School setting yet it doesnt touch on the subject of love often. I quite liked it, it was different, interesting and overall wonderful. But back to the point, surprising. I think I agree with you, Jintai was a lot more surprising for me, Hyouka had to be good, or else how could a novel from 2001 get adapted into an anime with all that Manga LightNovel competition? The content had to be good. A bit like Original Animes in my opinion, most Original Animes are awesome (eg. Madoka, Darker than Black) because only the best can air on tv (atleast thats my theory). Because unlike Manga or Light Novel adaptions, Original Animes don’t have a pre-existing fanbase to ensure profit. Therefore they have to make it awesome.

      • Gecko says:

Original animes also can use the anime structure as a way to keep the viewers in. Like Mawaru Penguindrum did, it kept releasing bits of the truth in every episode and it really succeeded in that way. Madoka did something similar where there was a serious underlying plot that had to be discovered.

        • Restia says:

Indeed, Original Animes have a lot more freedom since they don’t have an original version to keep in check, so fans can’t bash them for doing something

          • BlackBriar says:

I felt the same way with Phi Brain. Since there was no manga material that it was based on, it could go wherever it wanted and remain unpredictable.

          • Highway says:

I think the fans can go hang. I used to be someone who was like “But that’s not how it is in the book!” Now I’m a lot better about that, treating different media adaptations as their own entity. You can compare and contrast, and like one more than the other, but unless it’s egregious*, just watch or don’t watch.

            Haters gonna hate.

*I wish they’d make a Starship Troopers movie. What’s that? You say there is one? Oh, you must be talking about Bug Hunt at Outpost Nine.

          • skylion says:

As the premiere of Fellowship of the Ring got closer, I got very antsy. I had read the books at least once every two or three years since I was twelve. For a total of maybe six or seven times before the films came out. I had just read them about two years before. It was not as fresh in my mind, but the general story was refreshed.

I vowed not to read the books until all the films were done, including The Return of the King DVD. I found that I enjoy both media immensely for the same and for different reasons.

    • Kyokai says:

Honestly, I thought it was a show with moe girls and boys (I’m not a K-On! fan as you can see), but the mystery solving part (however elementary it was) and characters turned out to be thing thing that pulled me in.

      • skylion says:

I should pop over to your place with my K-On collection. We will have fun watching it.

    • d-LaN says:

I thought it was a mystery centric show but the characters caught my interest at the end. Does tht count?

      • BlackBriar says:

The gemstone of the anime was the character developments.

        • skylion says:

Nah, it was Satoshi’s little hand made bags.

          • BlackBriar says:

For me, it was Chitanda manipulating Houtarou with her puppy dog eyes and him breaking character by actually saying he was curious.

  5. Restia says:

Hellsing: “sigh” I can’t believe it’s actually over. Now where am I going to go for some good, over the top, bloody, gory vampire action? Alucard will always be remembered and his hot, busty servant Seras as well.

C³: Cube x Cursed x Curious Special: A good camping episode and I hope this leads to another season because this anime deserves it. Haruaki shows a good balance of what a harem lead should be and that’s saying something considering he’s played by Yuki Kaji. Skylion should definitely check this out for the black haired loli Kuroe. My favorite is Kirika Ueno with her Kurokawa Karen suit.

High School DxD OVA: This was dedicated to hardcore ecchi lovers everywhere. Enough said.

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia: Taima Otome: It was good to see Tasogare again. The only thing to notice is that this wasn’t on par with the rest of the series.

Holy Knight OVA: Passible entertainment and I’m actually glad they didn’t completely follow the manga because there were things that didn’t need to be adapted.

  7. BlackBriar says:

Hyouka, Rinne no Lagrange, AKB0048, Senki Zesshou Symphogear and Haiyore! Nyaruko-san really are surprise series. Each one of them was well done and unpredictable. Hyouka did good for making compelling mysteries out of otherwise meaningless information while Symphogear and AKB0048 are rivals for the title “mecha idol”. Nyaruko gets its recognition for creating the game “can you spot that reference”. There were so many of them that I needed to hear the points of views from others.

    • Highway says:

For me, I thought Hyouka was a surprise because it seemed to get very little preseason hype, it started late in Spring, and it started pretty slow, without a lot of “This is what it’s going to be about.” And then right from ep 1 I thought it was just tremendous storytelling.

    • Restia says:

I felt that Nyaruko was going to be great from start XD well, my favorite genre is comedy so I guess that nerfs my opinion abit cause bias on that genre, anywho though, how can you not like an anime with the Cthulhu Mythos? Not to mention it had 2 seasons of mini-series before, so I was already expecting tons of laughs from an actual anime adaption

  8. skylion says:

    Animation:

Kyoto Animation is in the clear lead with Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shita and Hyou-ka. I’ve said many times how much I enjoy they house style they have developed. Couple that with some of the best of personal movement and attention to detail and you the best all wrapped up.

SHAFT is the clear winner in the department of the abstract; but let us recall some of the finer (non-placecard moments). The furo scene in episode four had one moment of fluid animation…and it wasn’t even a fight…it was a big tease.

Production I.G. is still strong in the animation department. Redjuice turned out some great character design, and the overall feel of the fights and effects animation was super. Now, if they could only write a good story.

A-1 pictures brought Enoshima to life. I loved how the colours popped, and the clean lines brought to the characters. It made the supernatura/sci-fi elements and the human elements mix together well.

  9. skylion says:

    Surprise!:

I billed itself with the word Mystery!, but I never saw it as that. At first I called them Corundums. Brain Teasers. Not full bore Christie or Doyle mysteries; a position they tackle in the show in the show itself. But the surprise that Hyou-ka gave me was how well it encapsulated our thought process. All of our prejudice for, all of skepticism against, our hopes, dreams, our expiriences place limits on our thought and our decisions. And how you should just stop over thinking things and allow yourself to love someone.

    • skylion says:

I think I’ve said quite a bit about how surprised I was in liking AKB0048 in that shows reviews. Never an idol fan, I am enjoying the world building and the exploits of all the character. Go Sonata!

      • skylion says:

I championed it’s even pace from the first three episodes. I loved how it built layer upon layer of setting, character, action, dialog, and humor to make a whole that went against anything the preview material let it on to be.

Miniskirt Pirates, indeed. It earned the term Bodacious.

        MORESTU!

        • Highway says:

Another show I haven’t gotten a chance to watch.

          • skylion says:

            Well worth the time.

            • Highway says:

*throws another one on the list*

Maybe that’ll go after Mayo Chiki (I just started this a few days ago and like it a lot).

            • Restia says:

Mayo Chiki!! XD Totally great, I wish they’d do S2…

            • BlackBriar says:

              More Kanade Suzutsuki, please!!

            • Highway says:

So far they’ve worked everyone in well, although I’m only 4 episodes in.

I do have to say I’m not thrilled by the call for a second series of it, since that means there’s no resolution to this one. Oh well.

            • Restia says:

Well I’m pretty sure a half season cant cover all of the volumes in the Light Novels

            • Highway says:

I generally don’t know even what the source of a story is before I watch it, by design. I find that my enjoyment of media is increased if I haven’t read any kind of book or manga from a property before seeing a movie or TV adaptation of it. If I care to after seeing it, then I’ll go read the other material.

This keeps me 1) from worrying too much about how they’re going to do things and 2) always increasing my knowledge about the happenings, rather than seeing things cut out.

            • BlackBriar says:

The anime is well done in my opinion though I definitely wouldn’t want to be the lead male being manipulated as Kanade Suzutsuki’s toy, being a punching bag for his sister Kureha or that BL fangirl Nakuru stalking him at every turn trying to publish BL books about him and Subaru. I’d need some serious therapy at the end.

          • BlackBriar says:

I haven’t watched all the episodes yet but believe me when I say you won’t regret giving it a shot.

        • BlackBriar says:

That reminds me that I have to finish Mouretsu Pirates. I haven’t watched past episode 17 and that epic yuri kiss along with the other girls swooning over it.

    • Highway says:

The ‘mystery’ in Hyouka was something that I think threw a lot of people off. At their most diabolical, they were about as mysterious as a Scooby-doo episode, or an Encyclopedia Brown story (probably references that only skylion and I get). The mysteries were just the container for the real point of the show: the transformation of Oreki Houtarou and the growth and flowering of four young people as individuals and as a group.

      • skylion says:

I totally dug Encyclopedia Brown, and was called that on many occasions due to my bookish nature; as a child and an adult. Jason over @blogsuki also tossed that reference in when he reviewed Hyou-ka. Along with NBA references? Yes.

I’m going to have to remember the term, “container” Good term, that.

        • Highway says:

Yeah, early in the series (before I was on Metanorn, actually), people were talking about the mysteries in Hyouka and the show itself was talking about Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes. And I was trying to think of something different that would describe the show to other people, because if you said “Oh, yeah, Hyouka has mysteries like Sherlock Holmes” and someone who liked Sherlock Holmes tried to watch it with the idea that there was some big mystery plot, and instead it’s “Who borrowed this giant book from the library?” they’re gonna feel a little bit let down, ya know?

But I had thought about it and thought “these are more like those Two-Minute Mysteries books or even Encyclopedia Brown and the Case of the Missing Pencil Case”. So I started describing it like that: A little more cerebral than Scooby Doo (and less action-y chasey), a lot like Encyclopedia Brown. And that actually worked to get a couple other people interested in the show.

          • skylion says:

In the long run, mysteries worked for most people. It’s hard to find that many that are that much into “getting it right” by way of Holmes/Doyle. I’m one, but I’m pretty lenient.

            • Highway says:

I guess so, but my pedantic nature, combined with realizing that the show really wasn’t about the mysteries (they were just something to do while these characters were brought to life for us, just like Haganai isn’t about what the Rinjin-bu *does*, it’s about the people in the Rinjin-bu), made me want to find a better way to classify it.

I also didn’t want to turn off people who don’t get into mysteries (I think we saw a few of them in comment sections, and it would take some convincing for them to try it with people talking about Holmes and Poirot and stuff).

            • skylion says:

I run into the same trouble you do. I have much the same nature, but am learning that it is best used as a tool to fit the situation. Most folks don’t go the “pedantic route” at all.

            • Highway says:

Yeah, that’s one of those lifelong learning things: “Nobody else wants to hear your pedantry.” It’s actually better on the intartubez, cause when you notice you’re writing a 400 word comment, you can edit or delete it. In person, you’re just talking and talking, and you realize “Oh shit, I’ve been talking about totally stupid crap for the last 4 minutes, why didn’t someone shut me the hell up?”

  10. skylion says:

Nothing about the Crawling Chaos could ever go without surprising me in one way or another.

Well, I could have done without so much of the “spot the reference” madness, and have more of the Yog-sothery. But I understand the culture it comes from. As it is, the madness that was the cast was more than enough to keep me coming back. From Nyarlko’s single minded devotion to Mahrio, to the shy yaoi streak of Hasta, and Kuuko. Just Kuuko, man.
So looking forward to Season Two.

    • Highway says:

Playing “Spot the Reference” in Nyarlko-san was probably the worst part, for me. Especially given my limited background in anime, manga, and associated fandom. And that so many of the references were just thrown in to basically ‘take’ funniness from what they referenced, not that they were funny in how it effected the show.

Contrast to a reference I didn’t get in Binbougami-ga, but still worked for the show: when Ranmaru was first introduced in the class, and Ichiko and Momiji and Keita all had that art shift to a style from a different show and looked all serious. That worked without knowing it was a reference to something else.

      • skylion says:

I found I enjoyed Nyarlko more than Binbougami-ga. Just by a hair.

Perhaps it is my need for more Yog-Sotherry in my life?

        • Highway says:

I think for me, Binbougami-ga probably edged out Nyarlko-san, and that’s because Binbougami did what Nyarlko didn’t: toned it down after a couple episodes. Not much, just a skosh. And while Binbougami’s battle was at about a 9.5 to a 10, and Nyarlko’s was about a 8, toning it down to a 7 made a lot of difference.

Although the gang rape part almost tanked Binbougami completely. What a stupid plot line.

          • skylion says:

That’s some good reasoning. I found myself comfortable with the tone of both shows, and resist comparing the two actually, even thou the tones do overlap.

Well, the rape bit was unnecessary, I agree.

      • BlackBriar says:

I enjoyed “Spot the Reference” because I saw a lot of stuff over the years be it anime, mangas, video games or movies. Basically you needed a certain level of media knowledge. Haiyore! Nyaruko-san was simply wacky and unpredictable. It didn’t take itself seriously which pushed the envelope in a good way.

Binbougami ga! was funny but it also had a serious tone by introducing morality and broken trust like whenever Momiji was looking down on Ichiko telling her that she’s absorbing too much fortune and the imbalance is affecting everyone around her or the reason behind why Ichiko chose to isolate herself from everyone else.

I have trouble deciding which I liked more.

        • skylion says:

I enjoyed the idea of spot the reference, while I was watching. It reminded me that I wasn’t as clever as I think I might be; which made me feel super cool when I got nearly every single Yog-Sothic reference. There were some really really out there references (pertaining to adherents of adherents of Lovecraft).
And the staff on B-G did a terrific work balancing pure slapstick with melodrama…lulz and feelz are a good mix.

But being an old Yog-Sothic fan, I favor Nylarlko-san. It has Kuuko.

          • Highway says:

I think the *only* reference I got in Nyarlko-san was the one to TWGOK, during the alternate dimension-y dream thing. The rest were just outside of what I knew. Maybe I’d do better watching it now, but I’m not so sure.

            • skylion says:

When you say reference, do you mean some of the Japanese media ones (obscure or not) or the Lovecraftian ones? And I am trying to figure out what TWGOK means….

            • Highway says:

Either kind with that, and add in gamer culture, etc. I barely got any Lovecraftian ones (not my bag, baby). TWGOK is The World God Only Knows (“I can see the ending!”).

            • skylion says:

“I can see the ending”. Ah, a franchise I have yet to invest in.

I caught the cthulhu-bug back in around 87 with the Call of Cthulhu RPG by Chaosium Books. The adventure game where having a better running than fighting score will save your life.

            • Highway says:

It wasn’t bad. I don’t know if it’s two cours of good, and I think there’s supposed to be another cour also. It’s like a cheap and insincere version of Amagami SS, to me.

          • BlackBriar says:

They’re good with hiding references and there are some they just throw out into the open like what was done the time travel car from Back to the Future along with the PS3 and XBox 360.

            • Highway says:

See, I don’t think having a “PONY PlayCenter3” really counts as a ‘reference’ to anything. It’s just a bland-name product to represent something that a lot of people have. A Back to the Future car is. Nyarlko did push that first one a little bit by throwing in a zillion consoles, but that just seemed like a characterization quirk, not an attempt at being super clever.

            • Restia says:

Agreed, those things don’t really count as references imo, they’re just using popular things in real life and changing the wording to avoid copyright since it’s convienent and it really doesn’t matter if they make up something or not, a small humor bonus but not really a reference (eg. Gaggle, Sutohbucks, WcDonalds)

    • Restia says:

      Yes Kuuko.
and I got so excited for Nyaruko W but then it didnt air.. can’t trust ANN anymore =3=

      • BlackBriar says:

I’d compare info from both ANN and My Anime List to see which is right. There are times that things won’t be anything definitive until the last moment.

        • Restia says:

Yeah MAL didnt have a date, bit ANN said January.. got my hopes up.. guuuuu

          • BlackBriar says:

I felt the same way when I heard Kore wa Zombie season 2 was airing January last year but found out it played in April. My guess is that if Nyaruko does have another season, it’ll be pushed down later this year.

            • Restia says:

Definately is getting a S2, I’ve seen promotionals with “Nyaruko W” on it, just that ANN tricked me with a wrong air date~ =3=

            • BlackBriar says:

I heard another Senki Zesshou Symphogear is supposed to be lurking around this year as well and it’s already confirmed another High School DxD is coming.

            • Restia says:

Well, as far as I’m concerned, April line up shall be WONDERFUL~

Oreimo 2, Date A Live (read the LN so good), Yahari Ore no Seishun (also read a bit of this, Hentai Ouji (this roo XD), Railgun 2,just truly wonderful

tons of beautiful LN adaptions this year =w=

  11. skylion says:

    Movies:

It happened when the girls were hastily retreating from the final piece they gave on the outdoor stage during the London Japanese Festival. They were going home. They were going home and they were going to dig deep and make Tenshi ni Fureta Yo!. I realized it was far to soon to be over. K-ON is over. I am still very very sad about this. The film was such a wonderful coda to a franchise that never failed to make me smile.

  12. skylion says:

OVA: To-LOVE-Ru. Do you really need anything else. Oh, High School DxD was quite masterful in execution DFC=FTW!

    • Highway says:

I thought in just about every way, TLR Darkness outdid Highschool DxD, as a series and definitely with the OVA. They both need more tho, to continue the story (and I thought I heard that there’s going to be a second series of DxD).

Maybe it’s the way both MC’s act. Rito ends up just being basically a doll that just falls whatever way the other people want him to, usually with his face up some girl’s skirt and his hands on her boobs. He’s not really much else. And while that’s dumb and gets repetitive, it is what it is.

But Issei could be so much more, and because he doesn’t grow it really annoys me. With him it’s truly a case of he just can’t see what he’s got in front of him. Rias, Akeno, Asia so far all want to jump his bones, all day, every day. And he’s worried more about some booby monster plant? So much so that he ticks all of them off? And they’re not that easy to tick off! If he’d pull his head out of his ass *just the littlest bit* he’d be so much better.

      • Highway says:

BTW, I don’t know how many other girls end up wanting to jump Issei’s bones (in the LN’s I mean), but I think it’s quite a few, although I don’t think Koneko ever goes that far. I think Issei is supposed to end up more ‘onii-chan’ to Koneko.

But seriously, harem QUALITY counts more than quantity, Issei. And having Rias, Akeno, and Asia trumps pretty much everyone else.

I just want to smack him around!

        • skylion says:

          I would just take Koneko….

        • BlackBriar says:

Either Rias, Akeno or Asia is fine with me. Why is it always that the inhuman (other species) characters turn out to be the sexiest ones? The human ones simply don’t stand a chance against them.

          • Highway says:

Cause everyone wants to be Captain Kirk?

And I’d be Rias or Akeno’s kawaii kouhai anytime…

            • skylion says:

              …how many pawns are you?

            • Highway says:

Unfortunately, I’m probably about half of a pawn.

            • BlackBriar says:

And I’d be Rias or Akeno’s kawaii kouhai anytime…

I couldn’t agree more. I like strong female characters.

I find sometimes it goes up, and sometimes I’m just not in the mood, or there’s too much back and forth between a couple other people, and I just can’t really fit in.

I don’t know if they mind, tho. And who knows, maybe this will just be a preview of the coming Love Live! post where skylion refuses to take off his Nico-colored glasses to see the obvious superiority of Umi.

My previous laptop is now a media box, and I haven’t bothered to shell out the dough to get a wireless keyboard and mouse for the coffee table. I have access to a Nexus 7 (test driving it…giving it back tomorrow…tears) and it is really good for me to surf and play around with web media, but I find typing out a long post, such as this one, to be awful tedious. I have one other, very old laptop that I use for writing and web research ONLY. I finally dug out my older Acer netbook and put a better OS on it, and now it is working like a champ. So, thus has my output grown. Plus I have some more time. It’s the time part really.

            • Highway says:

I am almost solely a desktop computer user. Work desktop and home desktop. We have an iPad2, but most of the use that gets is as a lookup screen for my wife when she’s playing a game. I just don’t get into mobile computing. I had a work laptop, and before I got it, I thought having a laptop might be cool. But I learned almost instantly that I hate almost everything about laptop ergonomics.

My life is set up around desktop computers. I like them, I like the places they are (my home “office”), I like the large screen and input devices.

              wonderful.
Actual I’ve been saying NiKo all this time, but most subs have it as NiC. I guess hop on the C train since it’s being used more.
              Yes Nico time =w=

            • Highway says:

I don’t know if that’s anything to worry about. Her name’s にこ in the credits, and there isn’t anyone to keep separate who’s either Nico or Niko. Both are fine romaji for it. Generally, I’ll romanize こ with a k, but the subs seem to go with a c for her.

            • skylion says:

If I see an ‘i’ before the letter ‘k’ I would read it as a clipped ‘i’ sound. So her name would sound like Nick-O in my mind as I read it in subs. I hear Nee Co. And I think most would read it as that. Which is no disparagement to Restia at all.

            • Restia says:

XD more japanese phonetics continuing off from the Mondaiji post?

Ni + Ko, too bad Japanese doesn’t have two variations for a c

            • Restia says:

^ I have no idea why that got cut off :/

So I guess c would be softer version of k in english
but japanese only has k and softening with a tenten mark would result in a g

Well, I know hiragana. but not much katakana, Highway might know right?

So, Highway posted up their the characters for her name, and you could probably realize it just hearing it in the anime. Not an extended ‘i’ for Niiko (neee-ko), not a double ‘k’ Nikko (nik-ko), not sn extended ‘ko’ Nikou (ni-koh) <I'm too lazy to copy the character for accented o. lol sorry, but just a Niko short 'i' and short 'k'

So honestly yes it really doesn't matter which way you spell her name, whether a c or a k, but Nico seems to LOOK more western because Japanese would normally use a k, and western names like Nicole could be nicknamed Nico. idk

            • Restia says:

Anyways though, since it doesn’t really matter, that just makes this entire premise totally worthless XD

              Yeah……

Anime of the Year: Welp, it looks like a repeat of last year. Behind the 8-Ball of popularity. I never got into Fate/Zero; not for lack of trying. So here I will just remind folks that Chuunibyou was indeed the best. Say no more.

    • BlackBriar says:

Did you ever get a look at Hyouka? I think you should compare those two. Both did good in their own way.

    • Highway says:

I think I have to agree with BB here. In terms of the overall and lasting impact, I liked Hyouka quite a bit more (at the time, I was defending my investment in KoiChoco and thought it was better, but in retrospect Hyouka was better).

  14. d-LaN says:

    Surprise Series
    -Jintai (DAT BREAD)
-Hyouka (DAT character development and SHAFT-y moment)

    Adaptation
-P4tA (It more or less introduce me to the SMT series so in my book its a win. Also I love how they insert the game gimmicks into the anime. But I still want Marie OVA)

    Animation
    -Chu2koi
    -Hyouka
    -Fate/Zero
    -K
-GC (I am torn bet BRS, Another and GC for the last one ><)

And I'm lazy to type + vote anymore. Maybe I will update it later.

    • Highway says:

To me, Jintai was best in its first episode, and everything after that just kind of coasted down. It didn’t help that the more I saw of the show’s heavy-handed humanity scolding the less I liked it.

  15. AllenAndArth says:

i~m the only stranger that didin’t like hyouka and jintai….

    • Restia says:

OAO why didnt you like Hyouka? I can sort of understand Jintai cause of backwards time order

    • BlackBriar says:

You didn’t like Hyouka? Strange. I thought it was very interesting and thought provoking. Haven’t seen Jintai so I can say on that one.

    • BlackBriar says:

“Haven’t seen Jintai so I can’t say on that one”. My bad for misspelling.

    • Gecko says:

Yeah I didn’t really like Hyouka either. Yawn. I could barely keep myself watching it. It was pretty though.
In the end Jintai was weird, I can see why it wouldn’t appeal. I wouldn’t worry about being alone. There’s someone else, lurking, reading your comment, feeling better about him/herself.

    • skylion says:

Hey, that’s OK. We all have different cups of tea. And that is what makes Metanorn a great place to discuss stuff. We can bring our likes and experiences together.

      • BlackBriar says:

True that each of us have different tastes in anime and talk about it through our comments. The conversations are the best things to look forword to. But I wonder if the Metanorn bloggers are still going to think of us in the same way after we’ve laid waste to their post with our comments like this. LOL. I’m sure they’re alarmed by the responses.

        • skylion says:

I think we could be guilty of de-railing. Laid to waste might be a bit strong?

          • Highway says:

Yeah, and only minor derailing at that. I mean, we’re not throwing around spoilers or epithets or yelling or flaming or anything like that. No trolling (well, not *much*, and no mean-spirite trolling), and at least I’m having fun. I don’t know about you guys, although I presume that you’d not post if you weren’t enjoying it.

            • BlackBriar says:

I don’t know about you guys, although I presume that you’d not post if you weren’t enjoying it.

Guilty as charged. Lock me up and throw away the key. LOL

          • BlackBriar says:

Hahaha!! You, Highway, Restia and I have completely overtaken everyone else on this post alone. I think “laid to waste” may be appropriate to describe the number of comments we’ve made.

            • skylion says:

              Are we that intimidating? Kyo?

            • Highway says:

That makes it energetic and happening. I could point you to some ‘laid to waste’ anime forums… but you really don’t want to go there.

            • skylion says:

Yeah, some place are just awful. The MetaTeam does a great job in providing just the right atmosphere. Kudos, gang!

            • Restia says:

My frequency is highly inferior to you three XD look at your numbers! They’re in the thousands! XD

Oh wow! K-On the Movie is actually winning in votes!! YESSSS!!! And I’m so happy that Wolf Children is actually getting some votes at least xD Thought the vote count for that movie would be like 5 or something 🙁

Well I’m just gonna mention it right now that when the movie does get subbed, you MUST watch it!
