Tofu – Chuunibyou to me felt like the most “WOW” in terms of animation. KyoAni doing extreme fighting scenes!?!? HOLY SHIT, they need to do more of this! It’s so beautiful! But I’m sure it’s just me being bias since I can’t remember half of the shows that aired this year. T___T
Jrow – Fate/Zero was stunning. Episodes like the beginning of the Spring run were just incredible.
lvlln – My picks Hyouka and Nisemonogatari have already been mentioned plenty, but I notice that neither Black Rock Shooter nor Girls und Panzer has been, at least in this category. Perhaps some would consider CG to be separate from animation, but without a separate category, it should fall under the same umbrella. Black Rock Shooter pushed human CG animation and action forward quite a bit when it came out at the beginning of the year, and Girls und Panzer did the same with machines, to an even greater extent. Those works deserve recognition.
Namika – This just HAS to go to K. Because regardless of almost a shapeless plot/character development/whatever, you can not deny that the art and animation was beautiful.
Dana – Tsuritama. No it might not beat the technical achievements of other series, but it’s melding of rotoscoping and animation was seamless, the painted backgrounds were beautiful, artistic and original and the characters were adorable and highly expressive.

Jrow – Mouretsu Pirates, in spite of a title that sounds fanservicey, avoided being as much and was a cute girls doing cute things series that I really liked. Marika was great, and also surprise yuri.
Kara – I think the surprise of the year for me was Phi Brain S2. I was expecting nothing and then it made puzzles cool and people that could do them god.
Kyokai – For me, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun turned out to be quite a surprise. I was expecting a normal romance but the comedy element along with two complete anti-social coming together and having an almost volatile relationship was pretty entertaining and adorable.
lvlln – The way K turned out caught me by surprise. It wasn’t spectacular, but the way the sometimes-whimsical-sometimes-serious story played out was very good, and I appreciated how much weight the show put into all the little things. Not to mention the spectacular-at-times animation. I also nominate Hyouka for the surprise of KyoAni finally getting all its ducks in a row in a TV series for the 1st time in the 6 years since Haruhi. And on that note, Tari Tari was PA Works’s first good show from what I’ve seen, and it was phenomenal.

Kiiro – Jormungand could have won it any other time, but Sakamichi no Apollon takes it, as i did one thing that manga usually cannot do: delivering the musical aspect.
Highway – Nazo no Kanojo X, a manga with a really weird hook that turns a lot of people off and has a reputation for a glacial pace of progress was turned into a visually stunning anime that was well paced and had nearly flawless continuity, even though stories and plot points were moved, shifted, and rearranged in whole and in parts. And even though there wasn’t a large amount of progress within the main character’s physical relationship, there was always the feeling of moving forward, and if ‘glacial’ can describe the pace, it can also describe the definite feeling of inexorable progress that was given, always forward, never backward.
Jrow – Persona 4, as I’ve mentioned previously, was well adapted considering the countless hours of content and only 25 episodes to work with. Jormungand and Mysterious Girlfriend X were quite faithful and could also be in the mix.
lvlln – Well, this one has a couple obvious picks. Future Diary was an unforgettable spectacle, an awesome display of insanity that the manga had become famous for. The other one is clearly Joshiraku, the adaptation of Koji Kumeta’s 4-koma series about female comediennes. What do you know, comediennes know how to make people laugh, whodathunkit? A treat for every Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei fan.

Tofu – I’m probably cheating here since there’s no downloads for it but Movie of the Year for me was Wolf Children. It tells a tale of 2 siblings who have wolf blood in them, allowing them to transform into wolves when they wish and basically it’s a big life story about what path do they want to pursue – whether to live as a human or live as a wolf. It’s a beautiful tale filled with great characters that really bloom by the end of the movie. I was able to watch it on the full screen in the city (special screening). It was definitely a movie I would highly recommend to anyone. Unfortunately since I’m probably the only one who watched it, I can’t go into too much detail and I know this is a wasted vote but even so, it deserved a mention. ^^
Jrow – As much as I’d like to preemptively award either One Piece, Madoka Magica or Evangelion, I’d say the best that I remember releasing this year on video was Hotarubi no Mori E. It’s like a 2-episode arc of Natsume Yuujinchou with different characters, but the same feels…
Foshizzel – Recently I have become quite addicted to the world of Precure and I just had to nominate Precure All Stars New Stage: Mirai no Tomodachi! because it brings a lot of the past Precure girls together as they team up with the cast of Smile Precure~

lvlln – Seitokai Yakuindomo never fails to make me laugh. The Girls und Panzer OVA was quite funny as well, though it was rather short and featured no tank action.
Jrow – The Nichibros bonus eps. were pretty funny.
Foshizzel – Nichibros always brightened my day! I am with Jrow, they were so damn funny.
Kyokai – Oh how long have I waited for this to end. I am talking about the amazing, fantabulous and gritty Hellsing Ultimate OVA series, which took six years to finish airing (2006 to 2012). It has been a journey and every episode is a work of art with a unique art style, great story and lots of blood and eeps for supernatural lovers. Alucard is the real thing in case of vampires rather than those who actually glitter in sunlight. With the final 10th episode release, I’ll definitely take my sweet time in re-watching this brilliant series.

Tofu – Sakamichi no Apollon in my eyes is one of the best animes of the year. In my eyes, everyone got a well balanced amount of air time which gave each of the characters the right amount of time to develop and bloom before their little character arcs finished. I loved how they used music as a form of communication of feelings and words and something ever more special than that. It was spectacular, it was amazing! I didn’t know Jazz was this awesome! And that ending where they didn’t have to say anything… just playing a churchy Moaning? Oh god… I loved it! I loved it a lot! It was really refreshing compared to the other high school animes out there; taking on a more realistic approach to life intertwined with the music of jazz.
Kiiro – Gritty competition, but I go for Fate/Zero. A fantastic premise, with a fantastic group of characters, animation by ufotable, music by Kajiura Yuki, and a script by Urobochi. With an all-star lineup, the result was exactly what was expected. Although the ending might have been predictable, due to the presence of the original show, I believe that it should win the AOTY. Overall, 2012 was a decent year, and apart from trainwrecks (Guilty Crown), it seemed to be quite good. However, too many good shows are carrying over to next year, and many of them would have warranted nominations or even winning some of these categories. Here’s to a great 2013 in anime! Have a prosperous year of the snake!
lvlln – Even just 5/6 finished, Girls und Panzer probably edges out Hyouka for my top pick here. Tsuritama is right there just inches behind them. Future Diary and Nisemonogatari I would consider distant 4th and 5th, but worthy of nomination.
Foshizzel – From moe moe ctuhulu girls, crazy comedic adventures with the cast of Yuru Yuri s2 all the way to the over the top goofy fun of Aquarion EVOL! 2012 will always bring a smile to my face and cause me to laugh my ass off…

Movie nominations were pretty hard as the release date and watchers seeing it is almost four to six months apart so added all the nominated movies even when some were released late in 2011. Yeah, but when they spend the whole episode talking about how the rest of them aren’t good enough as idols, and then wheel out her sub-par song, it’s not supposed to be a joke, it’s just not impressive.
I still go with Umi as the Best Girl. Maki’s voice is probably second best of the ones we’ve got so far. Kotori’s is worse than everyone else on the show, including random background sounds and the alpacas.

Yeah, I still think they did it on purpose. It’s a sly little kick. As for best voices, I don’t judge it based on that. I see them as amateurs of various and indeed dubious talent levels. It’s part of the show for me.

It would probably generate less numbers in the polls than the epic train wreck that is Guilty Crown. Sword Art Online was eye candy but Guilty Crown had eye candy and awesome music to back it up. Redjuice and Supercell were their secret weapons.

I’m just saying because the rules at the time in the post were “Have 12 or more episodes in 2013”.
Unfortunately, I think because of the 2 episodes we’re talking about being so far away from the series, it’s not going to get proper consideration in 2013 polls either, and end up as a show without a year. Never mind that it is one of the best shows of the last 24 months.

Really everyone…. Hyouka for Biggest Surprise?
Did people really think that show would bomb because it’s not cute girls doing cute things? It was a good show don’t get me wrong but people were already expecting it to be good anyway since it was a KyoAni show.
Jintai was for me by far the biggest surprise of the year, I did not expect loving that show as much as I did. Going into the Summer season I remember people’s expectations including me for it in previews were kinda meh but at the end came out on top as one of people’s favorites.

I had read vol. 1 of Hyouka like a few weeks before it aired, so I had to watch it in the Fall since it was too fresh in my mind to enjoy while airing. Hyouka, Hyouka, Hyouka. hmm. Surprising? Perhaps. Its not even a light novel adapted into an anime, just a novel. And to top it off, a genre you dont see to often these days with all the harem and shounen, Mystery. It’s set in a High School setting yet it doesnt touch on the subject of love often. I quite liked it, it was different, interesting and overall wonderful. But back to the point, surprising. I think I agree with you, Jintai was a lot more surprising for me, Hyouka had to be good, or else how could a novel from 2001 get adapted into an anime with all that Manga LightNovel competition? The content had to be good. A bit like Original Animes in my opinion, most Original Animes are awesome (eg. Madoka, Darker than Black) because only the best can air on tv (atleast thats my theory). Because unlike Manga or Light Novel adaptions, Original Animes don’t have a pre-existing fanbase to ensure profit. Therefore they have to make it awesome.

Original animes also can use the anime structure as a way to keep the viewers in. Like Mawaru Penguindrum did, it kept releasing bits of the truth in every episode and it really succeeded in that way. Madoka did something similar where there was a serious underlying plot that had to be discovered.

I think the fans can go hang. I used to be someone who was like “But that’s not how it is in the book!” Now I’m a lot better about that, treating different media adaptations as their own entity. You can compare and contrast, and like one more than the other, but unless it’s egregious*, just watch or don’t watch.

As the premiere of Fellowship of the Ring got closer, I got very antsy. I had read the books at least once every two or three years since I was twelve. For a total of maybe six or seven times before the films came out. I had just read them about two years before. It was not as fresh in my mind, but the general story was refreshed.
I vowed not to read the books until all the films were done, including The Return of the King DVD. I found that I enjoy both media immensely for the same and for different reasons.

Hellsing: “sigh” I can’t believe it’s actually over. Now where am I going to go for some good, over the top, bloody, gory vampire action? Alucard will always be remembered and his hot, busty servant Seras as well.
C³: Cube x Cursed x Curious Special: A good camping episode and I hope this leads to another season because this anime deserves it. Haruaki shows a good balance of what a harem lead should be and that’s saying something considering he’s played by Yuki Kaji. Skylion should definitely check this out for the black haired loli Kuroe. My favorite is Kirika Ueno with her Kurokawa Karen suit.
High School DxD OVA: This was dedicated to hardcore ecchi lovers everywhere. Enough said.
Tasogare Otome x Amnesia: Taima Otome: It was good to see Tasogare again. The only thing to notice is that this wasn’t on par with the rest of the series.
Holy Knight OVA: Passible entertainment and I’m actually glad they didn’t completely follow the manga because there were things that didn’t need to be adapted.

Hyouka, Rinne no Lagrange, AKB0048, Senki Zesshou Symphogear and Haiyore! Nyaruko-san really are surprise series. Each one of them was well done and unpredictable. Hyouka did good for making compelling mysteries out of otherwise meaningless information while Symphogear and AKB0048 are rivals for the title “mecha idol”. Nyaruko gets its recognition for creating the game “can you spot that reference”. There were so many of them that I needed to hear the points of views from others.

Animation:
Kyoto Animation is in the clear lead with Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shita and Hyou-ka. I’ve said many times how much I enjoy they house style they have developed. Couple that with some of the best of personal movement and attention to detail and you the best all wrapped up.
SHAFT is the clear winner in the department of the abstract; but let us recall some of the finer (non-placecard moments). The furo scene in episode four had one moment of fluid animation…and it wasn’t even a fight…it was a big tease.
Production I.G. is still strong in the animation department. Redjuice turned out some great character design, and the overall feel of the fights and effects animation was super. Now, if they could only write a good story.
A-1 pictures brought Enoshima to life. I loved how the colours popped, and the clean lines brought to the characters. It made the supernatura/sci-fi elements and the human elements mix together well.

Surprise!:
I billed itself with the word Mystery!, but I never saw it as that. At first I called them Corundums. Brain Teasers. Not full bore Christie or Doyle mysteries; a position they tackle in the show in the show itself. But the surprise that Hyou-ka gave me was how well it encapsulated our thought process. All of our prejudice for, all of skepticism against, our hopes, dreams, our expiriences place limits on our thought and our decisions. And how you should just stop over thinking things and allow yourself to love someone.

I generally don’t know even what the source of a story is before I watch it, by design. I find that my enjoyment of media is increased if I haven’t read any kind of book or manga from a property before seeing a movie or TV adaptation of it. If I care to after seeing it, then I’ll go read the other material.
This keeps me 1) from worrying too much about how they’re going to do things and 2) always increasing my knowledge about the happenings, rather than seeing things cut out.

The ‘mystery’ in Hyouka was something that I think threw a lot of people off. At their most diabolical, they were about as mysterious as a Scooby-doo episode, or an Encyclopedia Brown story (probably references that only skylion and I get). The mysteries were just the container for the real point of the show: the transformation of Oreki Houtarou and the growth and flowering of four young people as individuals and as a group.

Yeah, early in the series (before I was on Metanorn, actually), people were talking about the mysteries in Hyouka and the show itself was talking about Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes. And I was trying to think of something different that would describe the show to other people, because if you said “Oh, yeah, Hyouka has mysteries like Sherlock Holmes” and someone who liked Sherlock Holmes tried to watch it with the idea that there was some big mystery plot, and instead it’s “Who borrowed this giant book from the library?” they’re gonna feel a little bit let down, ya know?
But I had thought about it and thought “these are more like those Two-Minute Mysteries books or even Encyclopedia Brown and the Case of the Missing Pencil Case”. So I started describing it like that: A little more cerebral than Scooby Doo (and less action-y chasey), a lot like Encyclopedia Brown. And that actually worked to get a couple other people interested in the show.

I guess so, but my pedantic nature, combined with realizing that the show really wasn’t about the mysteries (they were just something to do while these characters were brought to life for us, just like Haganai isn’t about what the Rinjin-bu *does*, it’s about the people in the Rinjin-bu), made me want to find a better way to classify it.
I also didn’t want to turn off people who don’t get into mysteries (I think we saw a few of them in comment sections, and it would take some convincing for them to try it with people talking about Holmes and Poirot and stuff).

Well, I could have done without so much of the “spot the reference” madness, and have more of the Yog-sothery. But I understand the culture it comes from. As it is, the madness that was the cast was more than enough to keep me coming back. From Nyarlko’s single minded devotion to Mahrio, to the shy yaoi streak of Hasta, and Kuuko. Just Kuuko, man.

Playing “Spot the Reference” in Nyarlko-san was probably the worst part, for me. Especially given my limited background in anime, manga, and associated fandom. And that so many of the references were just thrown in to basically ‘take’ funniness from what they referenced, not that they were funny in how it effected the show.
Contrast to a reference I didn’t get in Binbougami-ga, but still worked for the show: when Ranmaru was first introduced in the class, and Ichiko and Momiji and Keita all had that art shift to a style from a different show and looked all serious. That worked without knowing it was a reference to something else.

I think for me, Binbougami-ga probably edged out Nyarlko-san, and that’s because Binbougami did what Nyarlko didn’t: toned it down after a couple episodes. Not much, just a skosh. And while Binbougami’s battle was at about a 9.5 to a 10, and Nyarlko’s was about a 8, toning it down to a 7 made a lot of difference.
Although the gang rape part almost tanked Binbougami completely. What a stupid plot line.

I enjoyed “Spot the Reference” because I saw a lot of stuff over the years be it anime, mangas, video games or movies. Basically you needed a certain level of media knowledge. Haiyore! Nyaruko-san was simply wacky and unpredictable. It didn’t take itself seriously which pushed the envelope in a good way.
Binbougami ga! was funny but it also had a serious tone by introducing morality and broken trust like whenever Momiji was looking down on Ichiko telling her that she’s absorbing too much fortune and the imbalance is affecting everyone around her or the reason behind why Ichiko chose to isolate herself from everyone else.
I have trouble deciding which I liked more.

I enjoyed the idea of spot the reference, while I was watching. It reminded me that I wasn’t as clever as I think I might be; which made me feel super cool when I got nearly every single Yog-Sothic reference. There were some really really out there references (pertaining to adherents of adherents of Lovecraft).
And the staff on B-G did a terrific work balancing pure slapstick with melodrama…lulz and feelz are a good mix.
But being an old Yog-Sothic fan, I favor Nylarlko-san. It has Kuuko.

See, I don’t think having a “PONY PlayCenter3” really counts as a ‘reference’ to anything. It’s just a bland-name product to represent something that a lot of people have. A Back to the Future car is. Nyarlko did push that first one a little bit by throwing in a zillion consoles, but that just seemed like a characterization quirk, not an attempt at being super clever.

I thought in just about every way, TLR Darkness outdid Highschool DxD, as a series and definitely with the OVA. They both need more tho, to continue the story (and I thought I heard that there’s going to be a second series of DxD).
Maybe it’s the way both MC’s act. Rito ends up just being basically a doll that just falls whatever way the other people want him to, usually with his face up some girl’s skirt and his hands on her boobs. He’s not really much else. And while that’s dumb and gets repetitive, it is what it is.
But Issei could be so much more, and because he doesn’t grow it really annoys me. With him it’s truly a case of he just can’t see what he’s got in front of him. Rias, Akeno, Asia so far all want to jump his bones, all day, every day. And he’s worried more about some booby monster plant? So much so that he ticks all of them off? And they’re not that easy to tick off! If he’d pull his head out of his ass *just the littlest bit* he’d be so much better.

My previous laptop is now a media box, and I haven’t bothered to shell out the dough to get a wireless keyboard and mouse for the coffee table. I have access to a Nexus 7 (test driving it…giving it back tomorrow…tears) and it is really good for me to surf and play around with web media, but I find typing out a long post, such as this one, to be awful tedious. I have one other, very old laptop that I use for writing and web research ONLY. I finally dug out my older Acer netbook and put a better OS on it, and now it is working like a champ. I am almost solely a desktop computer user. Work desktop and home desktop. We have an iPad2, but most of the use that gets is as a lookup screen for my wife when she’s playing a game. I just don’t get into mobile computing. I had a work laptop, and before I got it, I thought having a laptop might be cool. But I learned almost instantly that I hate almost everything about laptop ergonomics.
My life is set up around desktop computers. I like them, I like the places they are (my home “office”), I like the large screen and input devices.

To me, Jintai was best in its first episode, and everything after that just kind of coasted down. It didn’t help that the more I saw of the show’s heavy-handed humanity scolding the less I liked it.

Yeah I didn’t really like Hyouka either. Yawn. I could barely keep myself watching it. It was pretty though.
In the end Jintai was weird, I can see why it wouldn’t appeal. I wouldn’t worry about being alone. There’s someone else, lurking, reading your comment, feeling better about him/herself.
