First Impressions – Minami-ke Tadaima

Time for a tale of sister themed comedy!

It’s time to explore the fourth season of Minami-ke, I know what some of you are thinking: Whoa! This series has four freaking seasons? How the hell does this series maintains such popularity? Honestly, I think it has to do with the cast of characters, who keep this series floating, especially the funny interactions between the Minami sisters or is there a possibly of something else? Well, time to find out why…

Hilarious family time

Angelic Chiaki or demonic Chiaki? Choose wisely…

Whenever there is a scene between the trio of crazy Minami sisters Kana, Haruka and Chiaki you can always expect to find yourself laughing your ass off. However, most of their jokes tend to fall flat or result in the usual slapstick comedy. Oh and there is a second Minami family, consisting of Touma, Haruo, Natsuki and Akira but we hardly get to see any of them outside Touma’s interactions with Kana. So, maybe this is your first time getting into this series and you are wondering how the episodes are set up? If you are familiar with past comedy series like Nichijou, Ika Musume or Joshiraku all of those follow the whole setup of three or four “mini” episodes that are usually centered around one main topic, with that kind of episode flow you can almost say there technically is little to no plot and you would be correct! Now that isn’t really a bad thing at all because it works out quite well for Minami-ke. Also since we are dealing with different age gaps between sisters, which means we get to explore different grade gaps ranging from high school life with Haruka, crazy middle school adventures with Kana and finally elementary levels with Chaiki… So, which Minami sister do you enjoy watching more? Personally I can’t get enough of all three! Well I have to admit Kana is my favorite thanks to the voice work from Marina Inoue, but every time she spoke I kept thinking of Nao from Smile Precure.

Side characters are funny

Kana-“ONLY ONE CHARACTER IS ALLOWED TO HAVE TWIN-TAILS!”

Besides the hilarious back and forth fun with the main Minami-ke sisters, you can find lots of oddball characters like the cross dressing Makoto or the crazy high school dude named Hosaka, who often unbuttons his shirt for the hell of it? Also since I talked about the other Minami family I can’t forget to mention the tomboy Makoto! She has to deal with living with three brothers. Also there really are like no parents in this series, which is nothing new in the world of anime. Besides those three characters that I always enjoy watching, you can find all kinds of other ones to have fun with.

Can you feel the love in this Minami-ke series?

Nothing really amazing happened in this first episode, besides getting reunited with the main Minami-ke sisters. However, blogging this kind of comedy is quite difficult thanks to the whole nothing special happens and zero plot development! Also this time, Minami-ke Tadaima is being produced by studio FEEL, which is usually known for ecchi and fanservice themed anime. They did manage to sneak in a bit of special fan-service like when Haruka fell asleep and her shirt was kind of halfway unbuttoned? Not to mention the fact that they showed Kana sleeping under a warm Kotatsu table wearing just a bra, while Haruka dragged her out? Sure, they did not zoom in and focus on that but still there are small hints at quick service shots. Soooo are you thinking about picking up this series? I think if you are curious you should check out this first episode and see if it entertains you! I think you can probably skip the older series and jump right into this one.

About

Is huge anime fan from Florida! who loves to watch anime and also enjoys drawing and collecting pictures, my favorite genre of anime has to be Mecha, there is just something awesome about giant robots beating the crap out of each other! Other than that type of show, I love a good comedy or action series :D

I watched the first season in the last couple of weeks, because I’d never seen any of the show. And while I find it amusing, towards the end of the first series marathoning it, it was a bit repetitive. And that kind of feeling continued into watching this premiere episode. The art is a bit better, and the show looks better (Feel’s mouths don’t bother me as much as the really leafy first season ones). But the jokes felt really recycled, especially after seeing so much of it in the last week.

If anyone is thinking about picking this up, you’re probably better off just jumping right into this series, rather than watching any of the older series. The jokes will likely feel fresher and more interesting, and if you want to see more of the almost-the-same, then you could go back and watch the early stuff. We’ll see how they reintroduce Mako-chan, etc, but it’s likely you’ll be able to catch up to that quick.

IMO, what the show always needs is less Kana and more Haruka, especially Banchou Haruka.

True now that you mention it I can see the repeat jokes in my head! Like Kana not studying, Chiaki hating certain foods, Haruka acting like a kid…

hahah yeah less Kana might be good for this season, but Kana is crazy~

My first impression of the initial series: I thought Kana’s eyes were going to shoot lazer beams at any moment.

I like this show. It has all the marks of just sitting back and enjoying some lulz. I even enjoy the shame of Mako-chan.

    Good work, Fosh!

Ah I missed Minami-ke, granted the other installments post-Season 1 wasn’t the best but I just can’t say no to the Minami sisters so am really glad to see them back again after 2 years. Hope to see Hosaka soon, I still vividly remember the Curry song. XD

I need to watch this. I like Kana too because she resembles me the most-a “genius who plays dumb?”

An interesting show. Maybe I’ll stick around with this if I still find it entertaining. And this is the fourth season? Man, I’ve missed a lot of animes.

Minami-ke is what I’d classify as a niche comedy. Sort of like a slice-of-life comedy, it’s not outrageously funny, though it has its moments. It’s more like you grow to like the characters and enjoy the interactions (Kana, Makoto-chan, Hosaka).

I enjoyed watching all three seasons, though I’d probably rate them as average overall. The second and third weren’t that bad imo, though the animation was pretty poor. I still remember Kana and the floating hand fail, lol. Or was it fingers? I just remember it being so obvious I had to re-watch the scene again to make sure I wasn’t imagining things.
