Mouretsu Pirates – 09

Marika-“Wow Gruier is really into this…”             Misa-“Why did you give her the keys?”

Welcome back readers, I hope you had a great week! Last episode was pretty boring and ended on a cliffhanger that left us wanting a whole lot more, but it seems were entering some interesting stuff thanks to the new princess character, hopefully things will continue to get interesting. Plot this week follows Marika discovering more information on the Golden Ghost ship. Prepare for a grand adventure in the future.

Marika-“OH HELL NO! That ship is not touching ours.”                Gruier-“Oh…snap…Captain is angry yo.”

Things start off this week with more laser shows in space, while the ship carrying the precious information about the golden ghost ship gets attacked and Marika decides that Gruier should change into her pirate outfit and shout at the ships. Yes nothing screams terror like a loli girl dressed as a pirate, right? After Gruier shouts at them to stop, they agree and back down while they exchange info and by info I mean suddenly OH SNAP NEW PRINCESS CLOTHES! However along with the new clothes is a small box used by the royal family that contains the actual data on the Golden Ghost ship.

Marika-“So, like the red triangles are the bad guys or someone has been drawing on my monitor again.”

Crew-“OH FKKKK… There is a pirate loli on screen.”                 Gruier-“STOP SHOOTING AT MY SHIP, YA JERKS!”

Gruier-“Wow, yelling at people is fun.”                    Marika-“Yeah…you are really into this, huh?”

Gruier-“Dude what the hell is this?”                                  Marika-“Hmmm, it sure isn’t candy.”

After that amazing space adventure, Marika heads back to school. Yes, I know back to school yet again…? While at school, Marika enters the Space Yacht Club room and finds Chiaki waiting and Marika goes on a glomp attack… After that, they talk about the Golden Ghost ship because Chiaki’s ship is also looking for it and they are prepared to eliminate anyone that gets in their way. Well damn! I guess Marika better crank up the friendship power? Before they can talk more pirate deals, Gruier walks in and introduces herself to Chiaki followed by Jenny and the other club members.

This is the best time of the week!

Chiaki-“I really hate you so much right now.”                            Marika-“Oh yeah, that felt really nice…”

So, why is Gruier in the club room? She obtained information that one of the students is a master of an illegal skill of “faking attendance.” I wonder who that could be…maybe a certain moe hacker on the Odette II? Anyway our princess character needs help and Jenny comes up with a brilliant idea. What could she do? Well, Jenny makes Gruier an official member of the Space Yacht Club and plans to take the girls on a longer trip and this provides Gruier with the perfect cover for missing school. Hooray! The princess made new friends that carried her away to do…stuff…with her I think those girls might have kidnapped her for a few hours.

Chiaki-“Why hello princess Gruier.”                       Gruier-“I like you! You shall become my new friend.”

Gruier-“Today…I…will…take over the universe!”                       Jenny-“Hnnnggg that is so freaking cute.”

Jenny-“Yes take her to the special room!”                          Gruier-“Oh crap! I need an adult right now.”

With the day almost ending Marika heads home and Ririka takes her out for dinner! Bonding time start! Wait not really that kind of time right now. Ririka is just helping her daughter meet up with the Bentenmaru crew to discuss the analyzed data on the Golden Ghost Ship in a secret location as in restaurant under the airport where the main chef has a metal arm…no this wasn’t a cameo by OH MA SHOE, thankfully!

Hell ya! Party time.

So what is this important data? Well the crew learns that ship has quite the history because it was the first colony ship to carry passengers and required them to enter a cold sleep to make long trips. Along with the history the data also contains plots of all the sightings of the golden ghost ship over for the past two hundred years. Having this really helps the Bentenmaru predict where the ghost ship might end up next, however it might be in a dangerous area filled with black holes, dwarf star clusters and proto-planets aka stuff that can kill you quickly. After hearing all this Marika doesn’t seem to be scared at all! In fact she is fully prepared to help Gruier find this ship and she decides to go ahead and take on this quest.

Marika-“So is it made of gold?”                             Gruier-“Yep I want to wear it around my neck.”

Extra space pirate adventures

Moe space pirate with princess Gruier.

Coorie is currently hacking into a bag of chips.

Marika-“So what have you been doing anyway?”                 Chiaki-“Inspecting the parfaits around space.”

Marika-“Whoa my finger is freaking huge!”                  Misa-“…are you high again captain?”

End thoughts

This certainly was a great episode for me this week! Far better than that other episode, but I know these types of things eventually happen with any long anime series. So, the princes finally got her wish to wear Marika’s fantastic pirate outfit and she got to scream and shout at her people? That was hilarious and she even started to get all excited. Anyone else notice all the blushing through the entire episode? Gruier, Chiaki, Jenny and Marika all had a case of blush disease, but those were all great reactions from the girls. Speaking of Jenny! She was back to brighten up the episode. I know there are a lot of Jenny fans out there and I can see why she is quite popular.

So we can all tell who the official master of faking attendance is right? *Cough* Hacker girl *cough* that just sounds like a great title “Master of Faking Attendance.” I wonder how you master such a skill; I guess you just stay home all the time? Anyway those other girls took a liking to princess Gruier didn’t they? And practically “borrowed” her I guess Gruier gets a harem ending after all. It was great to see Chiaki and Marika together again which had more blushing faces all over! Even the other club members were excited to see her again, but we all know she really missed hanging out with everyone.

Finally some interesting stuff with the Golden Ghost Ship right? But why is everyone after such an old ship anyway? I don’t think there is any actual treasure anymore and maybe there is something else on that ship?! Maybe there is like a map to some huge treasure on board?! So many questions this week, however Marika is so ready to take on this challenge and find Gruier’s ship. How about that brand new ending song? That really feels more like they are ending the first arc to the series, but I don’t think it will be back for the next episode.

About

Is huge anime fan from Florida! who loves to watch anime and also enjoys drawing and collecting pictures, my favorite genre of anime has to be Mecha, there is just something awesome about giant robots beating the crap out of each other! Other than that type of show, I love a good comedy or action series :D

Like everyone else, I was expecting this episode to open with a space battle. Yet it makes sense that there was no battle. I can’t see any logical way the Bentenmaru could beat a battleship and 4 escorts. You’d expect the battleship to have the very best aboard which would mean it would probably have someone better at electronic warfare than Coorie. Making them stand down was the only logical solution for the Bentenmaru. Once more the writing of this anime shows its quality.

But next episode holds out the promise of the big blazing space battle we’ve all been wating for. A show about space pirates has got to deliver that sometime.

I’m not sure going aboard the golden ghost ship is a good idea. It’s been wandering around in space for awhile now, never reaching its destination, and is located in a bad section with dangers abounding. I suspect its captain may be Van der Decken!

Any bets that at least one passenger, maybe more, is still in cold sleep aboard the ghost ship?

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah I was a bit sad on that part…like where was the massive battle for the precious Golden Ghost Ship data!? Oh well! Maybe a little later? Right it was a great move to have Gruier act as captain to calm the others down.

True that next week looks to be full of space and all that jazz! I hope things get somewhat dramatic.

LOLOL Yes! Watch out Marika you might find some ghosts or evil aliens O_O!

Right I have a feeling they are looking for someone? A sister? Queen? Or maybe something like an old ancestor xD

  2. skylion says:

Oh, HannoX I will be taking that bet. It has to be something character and narrative driven. This programme likes to shine with it’s tropes; never to bask for to long. So forgotten tech is probably out. I’m guessing it is of extreme importance to the Serenity Royal Line, enough to launch both an attempt, and fractional within that line.

My goodness Fosh, this season is laying it on thick innit? Last week we had Molesting Corporate Loli in LaGrange, and in weeks before we had Vampire Loli showing her kicks. Now…wow Pirate Queen Loli. Not even gonna guess what this season will throw at us, I’m starting to like the Loli-surprise.

Something is being glanced upon this episode, the fates of the individual systems as they tie into this Galactic Empire. We see tension, we see a possible divide between Marika and Chiaki (she does make that uniform look damn good). Yet, we also see that it doesn’t have to be as such. Hmmm, is there something on the Golden Ship that could unite the disparate worlds against the Empire? Give them a fighting chance?

    • Joojoobees says:

Yeah, I tend to think it is the ancestor of the Serenity royal family, who is in suspended animation.

      • Foshizzel says:

Yep! I think you are right Joojoobees! I have a feeling it is someone locked in sleep mode that they need to find.

    • Foshizzel says:

Hmmm yeah you are onto something I can see Mouretsu Pirates more as a character driven series vs a knock down blowing everything up “action” anime! This is starting to show with every other episode. Right! One thing is certain no one wants the ship for the tech…but like most people have hinted maybe there is someone on board asleep? xD

I know! What is going on? The anime producers are probably like hmmm we need the guys to watch what can we do? Blonde Loli! GO!! Ahahaha and it works, even if they are not truly aiming for that they are giving us enough moe girls <3

Yeah I can see Chiaki's ship arriving near the ghost ship and the Bentenmaru in the same location! She did warn her they will attack anyone that goes after the ship...so you could have a conflict right there. Chiaki looked great in her pirate clothes! Soooooo sexy xD

Whatever is inside people want! And I can't wait to find out.

  3. BlackBriar says:

The illegal skill: “Faking Attendance”. That sounds like a forbidden ninja art. If they actually had that in school, I’d probably be abusing it countless times.

There’s a lot of suspicious entities with regards to the power struggle that is starting to unfold. Why is the “Golden Ghost Ship” important enough for multiple parties to search for it? The word “Ghost” alone should be more than enough to exercise caution. There’s no telling what’s happened to it over the past few centuries during its drifting, or if it’s harboring something dangerous (Too many Sci-fi space movies, whew). After all, Gruier took many risks to reach the Bentenmaru so that she can search for it.

Things are going to get chaotic since Marika and the Bentenmaru are treading increasingly dangerous waters, especially now that Chiaki has revealed that other pirate groups are being hired to find the same “Ghost Ship” and do it by whatever means necessary.

The thing I find rather odd about this series is how it mixes in a lot of super-serious plot with a whimiscal high school setting. Do Japanese storywriters have a strange fascination with High School or something? Because the almost silly nature of the school feels like the polar opposite of the serious situations that has begun to unfold out in space, and detracts a lot from the general atmosphere of this series.

    • skylion says:

Why high school? I guess it depends on how serious you want the question to be answered, and in what context.

The easiest of answers, just based on this anime is pretty simple. Advertising demographics and merch monies. It’s the 13-17 demographic that spends money on stuff that is advertised, and will buy merch tie in and DVD/BD’s. It’s small fraction less so for 18-24, but not so small. You put your characters in places where you want your monies to come from. Lots of disposable income. It’s a formula that still pays the bills. It’s my demo they get nothing directly from; I have a child in the first demo, so I guess they get it indirectly from me. I just here for the fun of it. I desire neither the products nor the merch.

If you want to be more complicated, you can be. Just take a look at NGE. Hideki Anno asked the same question you ask, but he ignored my simple explanation (one that has always been available, it’s not really mine, it’s on the books).

He surmised that it must be a really awful society that puts, basically, children, into mighty war marchines…Mecha. Never mind the cool factor, which NGE kinda does to excess. Never mind, the heroic factor, which NGE questions to nausea inducing levels. Kids, in expensive military grade weapons with all the hopes of humankind pined upon them. IOW, the world after Second Impact.

      • Rakuen says:

To take your first explanation slightly further, you have to give your target demographic something they can identify with. It’s a lot easier for a teenager to slip into the shoes of a character in their own age and similar situation. It’s difficult to get them to do the same with a 30-something protagonist. The world could be exactly the same but the perspective is necessarily different.

This is literally why Vaan exists in Final Fantasy 12. The story is not really about him at all. He’s there because it’s easier for the younger crowd to identify with him than the grizzled war veteran Basch.

      • Foshizzel says:

You are both onto some interesting stuff!

@Skylion- Yes 13-17 is a huge market that buys a lot thanks to mom and dad I imagine and the 18-24 not so much I can see that due to working maybe lack of time as well? NGE Yes oh man I discovered that series when I was 16ish…I guess that helped me find the mecha world! I will say I rather watch female pilots versus males in say Gundam when I was younger. But now I don’t really care to much xD

@Ruken- Agreed most teens see themselves in certain characters as in age or how they act, older characters are more appealing to us older fans. I know Ghostlighting likes the older guys that never give up and do not care if they are old! I do enjoy that about some anime out there.

LOLOL Every Final Fantasy has some young boy or girl character it seems…well the ones I have played FF7-FF10-FF10-2 >.>

    • Foshizzel says:

Best skill in the anime world. “Faking Attendance.” Yes! That sounds like something from Kill me baby or original Naruto.

True! Ghost Ships are generally bad places to go currently they are dealing with this theme in the latest One piece arc, but most of them contain lots of treasure. However in Mouretsu Pirates anything could be inside, but most suspect there is someone on board they have to rescue or something along those lines.

Next week looked like the Bentenmaru was in a volcano! All that red…and you have Chiaki’s ship looking for that ghost ship too! I wonder if a conflict is headed our way between Chiaki and Marika?

  4. akagami says:

I usually skip the previews, so I missed the Chiaki cosplaying scene.

I’ve found Mouretsu to be a bit underwhelming. But if I look at it as a slice-of-life in the shoes of a teenage pirate captain, then it’s a lot more enjoyable (lower expectations for the win).

    • akagami says:

Chiaki-”I make this uniform look damn good.”

I so agree! Marika looks odd with that uniform, and Gruier just looks plain ridiculous.

      • skylion says:

Ridiculous?! Them’s fightin’ words, them are!

Now, say “All Hail Queen Loli” fifteen thousand million billions times.

            • skylion says:

And then say my corrected version “All Hail Pirate Queen Loli” just the one time. Actually, you can just say that. Well, ok, you don’t have to do any of that.

::hangs head:: I’m just a bad bad man….

            • akagami says:

Unfortunately my heart only has space for one loli at a time. Right now Kobato-chan has set up camp (just finished watching Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai) and Hina is right at the gates (Papa no Iukoto wo Kikinasai!)

            • Foshizzel says:

              KOBATO!!!! <3

        • akagami says:

Well that didn’t work at all. Guess the messaging system doesn’t like spaces.

    • Foshizzel says:

CHIAAKI-CHAAAN dressed up as a pirate was great <3

Right I can see this series focused on the characters versus action and stuff exploding.

Pirate Gruier was so cute! Even if that outfit was a bit huge on her xDD

  5. Rakuen says:

Hey now, faking attendance is seriously hard work. You can’t just stay at home. It’s an entire theatrical production! You can’t stay home for the same reason all the time. Nor can you beg absence for too outlandish or innocuous a reason. It takes finesse, creativity, and the ability to adapt at the drop of a hat!

As for the ghost ship, it seems more likely it’s who they find, and not what they find. I would also posit that whoever it is, someone a long time ago really wanted to get rid of them. You don’t plot a dangerous course just to keep people from finding your ship. You plot it on the chance there’ll be a little… accident.

    • Foshizzel says:

I know right? It takes years of practice to master! So true you must learn a lot of important skills.

Right the current mission for the Bentenmaru is going to be very dangerous and will prove to be the ultimate test of her captain skills. And Chiaki’s comment about her ship looking for the ghost ship as well…I can see a possible fight between them soon xD

  6. Gecko says:

That ending song scared me. I thought maybe the studio had run out of money and was going to end Mouretsu Pirates right there. And then the preview showed up, and I sighed out of relief.
Well, not really relief. This arc is killing me. The princess is just irritating me, Marika hasn’t been doing much, and this show has already turned old for me. I might jump in later to watch some other episodes perhaps, but really, I’m bored. And I can’t really take it as slice-of-life like akagami can. So I’m going to go ahead and stop watching. I’ve got enough in real life right now, and plus Shu’s troubles are really all I want… Bye bye for now, space pirates.

    • Foshizzel says:

Ahahahah yeah that ending was like wait a minute…what are you doing to us Mouretsu Pirates?! Are we in “filler” mode next?! Noooooooooo! xD

Awww sorry to hear that, but you probably are not the only one suffering from this. This series I will admit is super freaking slow. Sure there are lots of cool moments with Marika but are they enough to keep the show going for 26 episodes? I don’t really know…it seems to be like every other episode we get cliffhanger leading into a “thrilling” episode.

My advice is to probably let a few episodes stack up or wait until the series ends and spam watch them, but I can understand.

Ahahah yes Shu’s problems are about to end soon with three episodes to go.

  7. Zyl says:

I’m just really glad that Gruier ordering the pursuing Serenity Defence Force ships to stand down was much more successful than Cagalli’s attempt to get Orb forces to listen to her in GSD.

Chiaki’s information about her ship getting a contract from an unknown party (I know: It’s KUYBEY!!) to also look for the Golden Ship and eliminate any others looking for it is supposed to set up some kind of conflict with Marika and the Bentenmaru but I just can’t see the two groups actually coming to blows seriously… the power of yuri is too strong for that.

    • HannoX says:

Chiaki is too old for Kuybey. The princess is more his type.

    • skylion says:

Ah, but what about the power of yuri scorned….

    • Foshizzel says:

Ahahahah yes! I hope Gruier is a better blonde character than Cagalli…man she failed.

FKING Kyubey!? I guess he had to leave earth to search for new girls to trick, agreed Gruier is the perfect one for him to aim for. Yes! I wonder what Marika will do if she has to take on Chiaki’s team? DUN DUN DUUUN DRAAMA?!

      • skylion says:

As said by Madokami: I will protect all Puella Magi from the Grief Seed in the past, present, and in the future. He’s still QB, just not that QB.

        • Foshizzel says:

I wonder what QB tastes like…bbq or deep fried?! Sounds great! And hooray for the all powerful Madokami <3

          • skylion says:

Well, after seeing Homerun-chan fill him with bullet holes, he looked like a bag of exploded bloody mashimaro. So….S’mores!

            • Foshizzel says:

Yeah I would say S’mores is the best way to go! He does look like a fluffy marshmallow doesn’t he?
