Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko – 09

Baseball fun

Welcome back to more fun with Denpa Onna! After that previous episode showing more of Meme, it’s time to catch up with Ryuuko, Erio, Maekawa and Makoto. Nothing else happening for me except for recently reading manga of Ichiban Ushiro no Diamaou, Toaru Kagakua no Railgun and a few chapters of Nichijou. Really nice mangas so far on all three. Anyway solo reviewing episode nine of Denpa now! Enjoy the review.

Plot this week follows our normal cast of characters Makoto, Erio, Maekawa and Ryuuko with a few new side characters getting introduced as everyone plays baseball. We also meet a very strange person dressed up as an astronaut, the mystery person also claims to be an esper from another planet!

Ryuuko- “Awesome! Now I can stalk you forever, Makoto.”

We start off with Makoto exchanging phone numbers with Ryuuko and Maekawa, which makes Ryuuko a bit jealous. That girl is ALWAYS jealous over every little thing and even Erio. Anyway, Maekawa recruits Makoto to play baseball with her father and the various shop owners versus the other town people. After a short chat with Maekawa and her awesome tunafish cosplay, he meets the pitcher named Hanazawa, who just so happens to be voiced by Kana Hanazawa. I guess they wanted to give her some love in this series (like she’s not getting enough already).

I do love Maekawa’s bedroom! Very nice setup.

Erio- “Hey, Makoto, do you want to spy on the neighbors?”                     Makoto- “Uhhh, no thanks….”

Maekawa- “What? They were fresh out of squid girl costumes.”

After that first baseball game, Maekawa asks Makoto to join again the next day, which he agrees to and returns home to find Erio in the backyard looking at her telescope and asking him to join her later to look at the stars with her, which he agrees to. Erio does get curious about baseball and asks if she can join next time, Makoto is surprised she would even want to and my reaction was the same! But I think she just wants to hang around Makoto, who wants to be cooped up in the house all the time anyways? When they arrive on the pitch next day, they spot a strange astronaut cosplayer and think it was one of Maekawa’s fans; however, she has no idea who the mystery player is.

Erio- “Oh noes! A murder!”

Erio- “OH CRAP! IT’S A ZOMBIE!”

Makoto- “Here’s the plan! Erio, distract them with your moe powers!”                        Eri0- “AYE AYE, SIR!”

Now up to bat, alien girl from space!

After Erio manages to hit the ball, it flies right to the spaceman knocking them down. The others rush to carry the strange person off the field and the strange cosplayer slowly begins to talk and sounds strangely familiar to Erio’s mattress speech. The astronaut claims to be a Esper from another planet! The episode ends with Erio and Makoto staring at the mystery space man mostly confused.

Spaceman- “This is so cute! I must touch it…”      Erio- “Uhh, help! It’s trying to eat my brains!!”

End Thoughts:

This episode, I would have to say, not the best of lot with little progress beside introducing some new side characters. There was that new guy that talked to Makoto he does seem to have a thing for Ryuuko. She did blush when she saw him, maybe there is a crush or maybe he is just a random Ryuuko stalker? I did laugh when they had a character named Hanawaza, I didn’t recognize the voice but after listening and looking it up I did find that to be interesting. I guess they wanted to throw Kana some love? Either way nice cameo appearance by Kana Hanazawa, thank you Shaft.

As with any slice of life show we get the usual baseball themed episode! These types are mostly for chances at comedy and seeing the characters in action. With Denpa though, we don’t get much for laughs or anything amazing beside Erio actually hitting the ball so I guess that was cool, and it did allow them to add some extra characters like Maekawa’s father and random blonde dude. I was hoping for something funny to happen. Ryuuko did show up at the second game but did her usual growl at Erio. Seriously that is getting annoying; what is Ryuuko’s issue with Erio? I guess she saw her clinging to Makoto’s arm which made her jealous; I hope we find out why she dislikes Erio’s company.

Now for the mystery spaceman! Not really sure who that person really is, however the opening did show her off so I have an idea around that. I think that is the real Erio and the blue haired Erio might be the fake “Alien” version? Or the other way around! With the spaceman actually being the real alien that happens to look like Erio? Either way that’s what I think will eventually happen. Yes, I know very crazy ideas and I could be completely wrong. It’s usual for Shaft to throw new “crazy” characters and in Denpa’s case it might be for the whole who’s an Alien and who’s just a normal human? Anyway lots of ideas and I guess we will find out soon.

Next week! Will we find out who the mystery astronaut really is?! Yep, another crazy girl with some backstory I hope.
