Deadman Wonderland – 06

Hello there girly, were you arrested for being so beautiful~?

HOORAY SENSELESS VIOLENCE! Deadman Wonderland certainly has that in spades. So do I though, I suppose. Just this morning my punch collided with my friend’s fist, and now my hand is kind of purple on one side. My prime roundhouse kicking leg is a bit battered too. Gotta love the dojo life, coming home covered in bruises and making people think your parents abuse you or something. Anyways, enough about the violence in my life, let’s talk about a higher level of violence that can be found in Deadman Wonderland~

Thankfully for Yoh, Shiro passes out before destroying him, allowing him to weasel his way into the G Block. He slowly makes his way over to where his precious sister, Minatsuki, is being kept. As for Shiro, Tamaki’s butler/butlerette pair retrieve her and bring her back to wherever the hell she’s kept.

Ganta runs into – surprise surprise – Minatsuki. She’s being attacked by Masu (insert joke about ex-Metanorn writer Masu here), who wants to devour her flowers. Ganta distracts him with his own food ration, and then the two of them hide in her room as fatso trips over his own two feet in search of food. Even when he’s gone, they stay inside her flower-filled room to chat a bit.

Minatsuki explains how depressing it is to be forced to hurt people just for having a special ability they never chose to have, earning Ganta’s sympathy so strongly that he suggests they run away. Well, that and she flashes her boobs at him, which is as convincing as an argument can get.

They “escape” for a good minute before some pipes on the ceiling spontaneously get sliced into stakes and rain down on Ganta and Minatsuki. Naturally, he protects her and gets injured. Their escape comes to a full halt when the guards tell them to save it for tomorrow…that’s when Ganta learns that Minatsuki is Hummingbird, his next opponent. No one seems to notice the guard in the corner that Yoh knocked unconscious.

Um, so, can we watch…?

Without further ado, the match begins. Ganta starts off by assuring Minatsuki he won’t her, and you can see just how well THAT plan goes when she batters him with her blood-hairwhip. All this time she had just been acting sweet in order to find an opportunity to injure him before the fight (eg. the pipes). She’s as sick as they come, and she doesn’t waste any time in trying to kill Ganta. Before Ganta can unleash his fury, Yoh enters the arena and calls out to his sister.

Tamaki lets Yoh enter to add some drama to the fight. Gotta have some drama. The poor guy pours his heart out to her, explaining how he came to this prison and started saving up cast points to get her out. If you thought brotherly love would snap her out of her killing mode, you’re sadly mistaken. Instead, she pretends Ganta is the bad guy with her innocent act and then uses Yoh as a shield. Just as she thinks she has the upper hand, Yoh tells her he knows everything.

Minatsuki had a depressing past, I’ll give her that. Her mom died during the Red Hole, and she left her daughter stuck under a shelf. The worst part is that she stopped to fetch a FLOWERPOT instead of Minatsuki. The surviving father abused her the rest of her life until Yoh caught him in the act. He moved in to stab the father, but it was really Minatsuki who struck first. Of course, he didn’t realize her true nature until he figured out Deadmen exist.

Even knowing about her, he still tries to convince her that he’ll protect her…to which she cackles like the wicked witch of the west and binds him with her blood whip. Ouch. Ganta tries to attack her but she uses her brother as a meat shield. DOUBLE OUCH. Then she tells Ganta that Yoh is a horrible person who stole from him. AGAIN, OUCH. But Ganta provides an epic c-c-c-combo breaker, saying that Yoh is his friend.

Awww, sisterly love

Ganta slices of her hair with blood bullets until she gets so pissed that she handcuffs him with her remaining hair tendrils. Now remember, Ganta is slowly becoming badass…So all he does to win the fight is strut on over to her, lecture her, and then HEADBUTT HER INTO OBLIVION. Ganta wins, flips off the audience, and Crow is happy.

Instead of ending on a high note, I’m ending with an old dude. There is an old man who seems to have built this prison, or at least the Corpse Carnival arena. He mocks Tamaki from his bedridden state, although Tamaki clearly looks unworried. The man seems to have some connection to Shiro and some deeper understanding of Ganta’s family. The episode ends with him talking to Shiro, who is still in her “Red Man” state.

Bonus Screenshots:

Well good morning there, sunshine. Don’t ever stop leaving your shirt unbuttoned, okay?

Flattering.

Look on the bright side, we needed a new rug anyways.

Protip: it doesn’t work if you’re an A cup

End Thoughts: I feel pretty meh about this whole episode. Sure, it had a great fight with a psychobitch, but it was so painfully predictable that I just wanted things to hurry up and get to the point. We already know Minatsuki is a sadistic little murderette otherwise she would have died by now in this rough prison. Or maybe you just watched the OP scene and saw her flashing an insane-as-fuck grin at the camera? The only real surprise here was that Yoh isn’t an asshole, nor an idiot. I was impressed that he managed to balance trying to help her while still not being fooled by her innocent act.

But talking about plot for Deadman isn’t the best of ideas since this show isn’t exactly going to win an award for best story. So how was the blood and torture this time around, the real charm point for Deadman? It was so-so. I appreciate the battle-per-episode effort, in the spirit of a true shounen show, but the animation often gets in the way of me really enjoying the fight. Having a blood-hair whip sounds badass in theory, but she didn’t look like she was even hurting anyone… All the budget for this episode went into making Minatsuki’s facial expression, which where wonderfully maniacal. This means that anything outside of close-ups is kind of derpy though. Animation aside, the fight lacked the intensity of the Crow fight. There was too much talking and too much of everyone trying to make that stupid girl come to terms with herself.

I really want to like Hummingbird, I do…but naw, can’t do it. I do appreciate those crazy facial expressions though! :3 My favourite part of the episode was probably Yoh. I want to know why he had a knife on him to kill his father and why he’s so strong for just a human. Well, more clever and swift than strong, I suppose, but the guy certainly gets around. I really want to see more from him next episode. Maybe he’ll legitimately befriend Ganta now that he knows his sister is bonkers? If she is magically good by the next episode, I’m going to be quite depressed :/

Preview: Next episode features…a superhero that vaguely resembles the Red Man. If you pay attention to the ED song, kid!Ganta is holding an action figure of the guy. Oh, and there’s half-naked Minatsuki too, so stay tuned.

I think that the scene where Ganta gives a speech about trust and friendship before headbutting a girl into unconsciousness really sums up DW as a series.

I wasn’t entirely happy with all of the things they changed and cut this episode – Hummingbird is even crazier in the manga, they censored some of the things she says and her Branch of Sin probably didn’t draw blood much because of the censorhip when it did in the manga. Still, I was waiting for this episode pretty much since I started watching the show, and seeing this fight and Minatsuki’s facial expressions animated really helped smooth over some of my problems with it. I’m glad that she got to be as crazy as she was, I knew things were going to get cut from this episode but I’m glad the basics were intact. Could have been better but I was pretty happy for the most part.

And also, the scene where Ganta gives a speech about trust and friendship before headbutting Hummingbird MADLY resembles Naruto O.O”

      • BlackBriar says:

Yeah, it reminds of Naruto as well. When they were kids, Naruto gave a speech about trust and friendship right before headbutting Gaara until he was near unconscious. It’s useful if you want to get a moral lesson through someone’s thick skull.

        • Namika says:

Like, literally beating it into their heads xD

          • Overcooled says:

That was a pretty glorious headbutt indeed. Come to think of it, headbutting people into their senses happens a lot in anime..I had forgotten about Naruto’s headbutting legacy XD

I haven’t even read the manga and I’m convinced it’s better. I’ll be sure to read it once the show is done. It’s not a terrible adaptation (like Bakuman. Dear God, Bakuman…) but it’s okay.

  2. Captain says:

Minatsuki is one of my favourite characters, I swear :U I like how she acts all sweet and virgin like, and then.. goes insane.
..I really hate the censorship in the anime D:

    • Namika says:

Yeah, the censorship is annoying. But somehow, makes DW look even more……… sick 😀

      • Overcooled says:

I don’t know if I like her, her innocent act is so easy to see through >_< I wish they released the uncensored version sooner...

  3. Carla says:

    YANDERE POWEEEEEEEEEEEER!!!

    • Overcooled says:

      Thank God I don’t have a yandere sister…

      • BlackBriar says:

Maybe I’d like one. I’d never get bored, always something to keep me occupied and on my toes and with her, it would never be a dull day. Unless I’ve become a total masochist as well as a sadist if I’m asking for that. LOL. I must be going out of my mind.

        • Overcooled says:

Lol, I suppose. It’s all fun and games until she stabs you in the eye while you’re sleeping. XD

          • BlackBriar says:

Ouch!! No thank you, too painful. I’d like to keep my eyes. I need them.

    • amado says:

      oh yeah.
minatsuki can be considered the only yandere in deadman wonderland… if she does love yoh like yoh loves her.
      I hope she does.

  4. BlackBriar says:

Hahaha!!! Nice!! Prison really changes people. Just look at what it did to Ganta. He’s just acquired a foul mouth. Headbutt for the win!! He’s gonna have trouble proving his innocence now that he’s slowly being corrupted by that insane hellhole.

Insane inmates all around, especially the girls (Shiro, Hummingbird). Now we can’t even trust a beautiful face unless you’re expecting to get stabbed in the back. Hummingbird joins Shiro in the murderess category. She’s a fruitcake with extra nuts for good measure. Deadman Wonderland is beyond therapy and that’s a good thing for us, fun to watch.

I noticed the Deadmen have bird-like codenames (Woodpecker, Crow, Hummingbird).

Nooooo!! We’re already halfway into the series and every episode just leaves me wanting more. Only 6 more to go. Too early to say but this is 2011’s number 1 horror anime.

    • Namika says:

And may I tell you, he looks totally cool when speaking like that LOL But anyone would go crazy in a place like that, especially a kid, who’s only started to mentally develop. O_O

    • Overcooled says:

Deadman Wonderland especially. Ganta is going to be a badass by the end of this show! Or maybe just insane like everyone else. They’re beyond saving without a doubt…

I would say it’s the most gory, maybe not the best though. We’ll see if Summer and Winter have any shows that exceed DW~

      • BlackBriar says:

Minatsuki’s insanity is appealing to me. She’s grade A material to be a vicious mass murderer. A blood-whipping diva. Blood, gore and extreme violence, irreparable insanity. Four things Deadman Wonderland is famous for. I wonder how many caged and crazed Deadmen they have locked up in that madhouse. It makes other prisons look like elementary schools.

I’ve noticed Minatsuki’s also really perverted and sadistic. She asked Ganta what he was planning to do to her once they got. I seriously doubt he was even thinking that far ahead. Naughty girl!!! Saying that she gets off on depression and despair. Something other than her parental trauma made her this insanely twisted. What could it be?

Is it weird if blood, gore and insanity makes me excited and I love Minatsuki?

      • MikADo says:

I personally would prefer a bad end where Ganta mentally breaks down, goes berserk, release his power, alert the whole world of a new form of power, and then get killed by shiro or sth like that

  5. Namika says:

W0ot! I agree that the whole episode was predictable, but still, it didn’t keep me from enjoying, fufufu~ Somehow, I found Hummingbird appealing O_O well, actually, I think she will still be as crazy, but will become real friends with Ganta and stop being such a maniac to slaughter all the “liars” before they can betray her. Actually, I enjoy that type of crazy characters, who are nice to their friends, but go on a rampage on the battlefield. Being vicious is fun! >:D

But what I really enjoyed in this episode were the several seconds featuring Crow. I can’t stop LOVING that character, even though we haven’t seen a lot of him. And I also came to like Yoh more, because he isn’t a traitor, like I thought at first, and definitely isn’t an ignorant idiot.

    • Overcooled says:

I love my crazy characters, but I can’t seem to find anything I really like about Minatsuki :/ Bleh. I guess she will show development from now on since she survived the battle and after-battle show (based on the preview).

Those 3 seconds of Crow were heaven sent.

  6. amado says:

I pair up yohXminatsuki along with gantaXshiro. theres also mocking bird with his sister.
(yeah, most of those are wincest)
btw. minatsuki’s father never abused her. it was all just her act.

  7. Alynn says:

Minatsuki is such a bitch omg, and I can’t decide if I like her or not. Her insanity is appealing to me.

I started to like Yoh a lot more as well. Not the selfish guy I thought he was before.

So happy when Crow showed up, even though it was only for a second.

    • Overcooled says:

I don’t think I like her. Insane characters are fun, but I can’t find myself liking her as much as, say, Yoh. He’s probably my favourite character next to Crow

  8. Hime says:

Crow getting a little fanservice spot was so awesome.

  9. Elyon says:

I want a beautiful onii-chan like Yoh who will come bust me out of prison one day after I’m arrested for murder. <3

Ughh headbutt of doom was so retarded, but I can't say I didn't laugh. XD

    • Overcooled says:

…I wouldn’t mind that either to be honest *cough*

His expression during the headbutt made it all the more ridiculous, but it worked! XD

  10. Kyokai says:

Everything was so predictable but Yoh sure got some points in my book. Who can hate him now that you finally found out he has such a sick sister and I don’t think I would ever like her either. >.>

Ganta’s headbutt was SO Shiro that I imagined her doing that rather than Ganta. I missed her perkiness and hopefully she would come out of that phase with pervy oyaji making it all right. What I really want to know is her and Ganta’s childhood connection with this old dude and official job description of the twin bodyguards. xD

    • Overcooled says:

I like Yoh more than Ganta, haha. Yoh and Crow are my boysss.

Ganta is taking after Shiro too much. The last thing I want is her perky side to come back, though, I prefer her murdering side. <_< I'm with you about learning more about their childhoods and relation to the old guy though!

  11. Foshizzel says:

Epic episode! Hahahah mostly thanks to the new girl damn I knew she was probably messed up and boy was I right xD No one is “normal” in this series!

Still kind of slowwwwww but I still enjoy it!

  12. MikADo says:

Sorry Minatsuki, but it was too obvious that you were lying, no surprise there, but still i like those type of characters so you pass :3

  13. Shinmaru says:

“We already know Minatsuki is a sadistic little murderette otherwise she would have died by now in this rough prison.”

lol Exactly. I love how Ganta talks about how Shiro and Yoh made him briefly forget how horrible a place Deadman Wonderland is, and then moe flower girl shows up and he forgets everything he had just been thinking about. No way she could be crazy at all! She’s just a delicate flower!

Also, her backstory killed me. The whole flower pot thing is hilarious. Who does that??

    • Overcooled says:

Ganta is so easily distractable “BAWWW I’M IN PRISON…oh, hey, boobs. I’m okay now.” I guess you could say he’s desperate to find some sort of mental escape from prison life. XD

Must suck to be left behind for a $5 plant you could buy at the corner store. :/ What a bad mother.
